last ditch defense(effort):

The cobbler should stick to his last.: 자기의 본분을 지켜야 한다.

→ …가 특히 필요하다: there is a special need for~
→ 여러 언어, 특히 영어에 능숙한 사람: people fluent in language, particularly in English
→ 지난 10~20년 동안에: in the last ten to twenty years(last 앞에 정관사가 붙는 점에 유의할 것)
→ 점점 더 작아 보이게 만들다: make~seem smaller and smaller
→ 그 전보다 더 많이 만나고 이야기를 나누다: meet together and talk with each other more than ever before

실현되지 못하고 만 '소망'이나 '의도'는 hoped(intended, wanted)+to have+p.p로도 나타낸다. ex) 그는 당신을 만나기를 바랬었어요(끝내 만나지 못했다는 뜻으로): He had hoped to see you.=He hoped to have seen you.
I had given weekly lectures.
I had my own personal reason.
(ANS) Last April I intended to go to Chunchon, but the trip did not materialize after all. I had wanted to visit the Sacred Heart Women's College in that city, where I had given weekly lectures one fall semester. The weekly trip to Chunchon was tiring, but I had taken the job out of courtesy, because I could not decline the honor when Sisters Choo and Kim had taken the trouble to come to see me. Besides I had my own personal reason.

→ 「아슬아슬한 순간에」는 by a narrow margin/ by the skin of one's teeth/ (only) just in time 등으로 나타낸다.
→ Had a narrow escape

had a narrow escape.
We won, but it was a very close game.
(ANS) We were only just in time for the last train.

거리에서: 거리란 a street로 보고, on (또는 in) a (the) street로.
→ 작년에 ~했을 때: last year, when … 으로도 좋고, when … last year의 형식으로 좋습니다.
→ 고민거리가 있다: be in trouble; be in distress; have some worries 등으로 표현.
If I had been aware of his trouble, I could have helped him somehow.
(ANS) Last year, when I happened to meet him in the street, I did not notice that he had worries and parted from him at once. If I had known his worries then, I could have offered him help in some way or other./ I came across him on the street last year, and I parted from him without noticing that he was in trouble. If I had been aware of his trouble, I could have helped him somehow.

(ANS) Last Sunday an old friend of mine, whom I had not seen for a long time, came to see me, and we had a good talk for some five hours.
※ Some five hours「약 5시간」에서, some은 about와 같다.

I intended to put my room in order last night, but I was too tired to do so.
→ 「그런 날에는」은 on such a day, 「짬이 날 때」는 in my leisure time 또는 when I am free도 좋다.
(ANS) I make it a rule to read newspapers in the morning, but I am too busy to do so. On such a day sometimes I read them after supper when I am free.

[比較] border, margin, verge, edge, rim, brim, brink
the border of a rug/ I had at last reached the border of the forest.
the margin of a printed page/ the margin of a lake verge는 표면이나 퍼진 면(expanse)의 한계나 말단(termination)을 선명히 나타내는 선이나 대단히 좁은 공간을 가리킨다.
The sky was clear from verge to verge.(하늘은 끝에서 끝까지 맑았다.)
the edge of a box/ Put an edge on this knife.(이 칼에 날을 세워라.)
the rim of the moon/ the rim of a bucket
Fill the pot to the brim.(솥에 가득히 채워라.)/ The river had risen to the brim.
the border of good taste(좋은 취미의 한계선)/ the margin of error/ He is on the verge of ruin.(그는 몰락할 지경에 처해 있다.)/ There was an edge in his tone.(그의 어조는 서슬이 시퍼랬다.)/ the rim of consciousness/ a mind filled to the brim(가득히 차 오른 마음)/ the brink of disaster(금방이라도 재난이 닥쳐올 듯한 지경)

[比較] outline, summary, brief, synopsis
ex) He submitted an outline of his speech to his superior for approval.
ex) The last chapter contained an excellent summary of the whole book.
ex) This summary dismissal of his plea was infuriating.(그의 이 소송에 대한 즉결에는 사람을 격노시키는 데가 있었다.)

[比較] steal, purloin, pilfer, filch, thieve, rob, hold up
Thieves stole the silver.
He stole a look./ He stole her heart./ Ill health has stolen the bloom her cheeks.
letters purloined by a blackmailer/ A certain document of the last importance has been purloined from the royal apartments.
He stole money from a friend.

[比較] till, until
A son's a son till he takes a wife처럼 할 수도 있다.
Until he went to college, he never had thought of his speech./ He had never thought of his speech till(or until) he went to college.
Wait till the rain has stopped라고도 할 수 있다. He waited till the rain stopped 또는 He waited till the rain had stopped라고 할 수 있다. till(또는 until)은 He did not learn of it till the next day(다음 날에 가서야 그 일을 알았다)에서처럼 부정적 구문에 쓰이기도 한다. 이 구문에서 계속되는 것은 부정의 상태 즉, he did not learn이다. It was not long till we realized(오래지 않아 우리는 깨달았다) 같은 글은 이렇게 설명할 수 없다. 여기서 주절 it was not long은 계속하는 것으로 생각되는 문장을 만들지 못한다. She can't go till she finishes her work와 Until injustice is ended, peace will never be realized 같은 글에서는 till, until의 용법은 표준적이지만 다음과 같은 구문에서 till, until의 사용은 가끔 나타나는 수는 있어도 격식 차리는 글에서는 before, when을 쓰는 것이 좋다.
It was not long before he noticed the change.(이윽고 그 변화가 그의 눈에 띄었다.)/ She had scarcely arrived when it began to storm.

[比較] trace, vestige, track
follow the traces of deer through the snow/ the clear trace of a sleigh
The child carefully removed the traces of jam from his mouth.
There was barely a trace of sugar in the tea.
A few columns were the last vestiges of a Greek temple.(몇몇 기둥만이 그리스 사원의 마지막 흔적이었다.)
automobile tracks in the sand/ The hounds are on the track of the fox.

[比較] top, summit, peak, climax, acme, apex, pinnacle, zenith
the top of the house/ Please loosen the top of this jar.(이 병마개 좀 늦추어 다오.)
He is at the top of his class.
Two members of the expedition reached the summit of Mt. Everest.
