little reason to back its claim, though.

Archibald Spooner was well known in England for his slips of the tongue.
He was a teacher at Oxford University and a clergyman as well.
Dr. Spooner suffered from nervousness and poor eyesight.
This may have made it difficult for him to see words correctly and to repeat them accurately.
One time he told a student that he had “hissed the mystery lectures” when he meant to say “missed the history lectures.”
He told another student that the young man had “tasted a worm.”
He meant to say that the student had “wasted a term.”
Today, this particular type of pronunciation error is often called a “Spoonerism.”

한번은 그가 어떤 학생에게 ‘missed the history lectures'(역사 강의를 빼 먹었다)를 말하려고 하면서, ‘hissed the mystery lectures'라고 말한 적이 있었다.

Not that the poet was responsible for generating the feeling.
He merely captured it, gave it a name, and made us more aware of its pervasiveness.

Thirty-two years later, the anxiety has not gone away; if anything it has

A great part of our lives is occupied in reverie, and the more imaginative
we are the more varied and vivid this will be. How many of us could face
having our reveries automatically registered and set before us?
We should be overcome with shame. We should cry that we could not really
be as mean, as wicked, as petty, as selfish, as obscene, as snobbish,
as vain, as sentimental, as that. Yet surely our reveries are as much
part of us as our actions, and if there were a being to whom our inmost
thoughts were known we might just as well be held responsible for them
as for our deeds. Men forget the horrible thoughts that wander through
their own minds, and are indignant when they discover them in others.

If you will ask some one who has at some time acted in a manner for which
he would be punished if it became known, you will find that when discovery
seemed imminent, the person in question repented of his crime. I do not
say that this would apply to the professional thief who expects a certain
amount of prison as a trade risk, but it applies to what may be called
the respectable offender, such as the bank manager who has embezzled in
a moment of stress, or the clergyman who has been tempted by passion into
some sexual irregularity. Such men can forget their crime when there seems
little chance of detection, but when they are found out or in grave danger
of being so, they wish they had been more virtuous, and this wish may give
them a lively sense of the enormity of their sin.

During the summer in Nova Sotia, moths known locally as "millers" cluster
around outdoor lights. At my cottage one weekend, my friend Theresa and
I were becoming annoyed at the number of insects the kids were letting inside.
When we heard our husbands' footsteps on the porch, Theresa called out
sharply: "Get in quick and close the door! Those darn millers will come
in, and we won't be able to get rid of them."
As she spoke, our husbands entered, followed by four people she had never
met. There was an awkward silence until one of the visitors exclaimed,
"Too late! We're already in."
Theresa was introduced to Bruce Miller, his brother Lee, Bruce's
stepdaughter, Denice, and her fiance, Wayne Miller.

He was forty when he married my mother, who was more than twenty years

I have been told that they were known in the Paris of that time as
Beauty and the Beast. One of her great friends was Lady Anglesey,
an American woman who died at an advanced age not very long ago, and
she told me that she had once said to my mother: "You're so beautiful
and there are so many people in love with you, why are you faithful
to that ugly little man you've married?"
And my mother answered: "He never hurts my feelings."

Suppose two friends of mine are sitting in my room. One is 165cm tall and
the other is 175cm tall. Which do you think is a man and which is a
woman? In the absence of other information, you probably conclude that
the shorter one is a woman while the taller one is a man. Where does this
conclusion come from? Your experience tells you that men tend to be
taller than women. So, From the particular men and women you have known,
you draw a conclusion about men and women as a whole. In this way, many
of your day-to-day judgments and guesses depend on your experience.

Plants are known to react to environmental pressures such as wind, rain,
and even human touch. Coastal trees, for example, become shorter and
stronger in response to strong winds and heavy rainfall. In a laboratory
study conducted at Stanford University, the same changes in plant growth
patterns were brought about by touching plants twice a day. The
researchers also found that these growth changes resulted from gene
activation. Their findings indicate that this gene actuation did not
occur unless there was direct stimulation.

Tools and hand bones excavated from the Swartkrans cave complex in South
Africa suggest that a close relative of early humans known as
Australopithecus robustus may have made and used primitive tools long
before the species became extinct 1 million years ago. It may even have
made and used primitive tools long before humanity's direct ancestor,
Homo habilis, or "handy man," began doing so. Homo habilis and its
successor, Homo eretus, coexisted with Australopithecus robustus on
plains of South Africa for more than a million years.

Huge glaciers that stretch over the shallow continental shelf give birth
to icebergs throughout the year. Icebergs are not like sea ice, which is
formed when the sea itself freezes ; rather, they are formed entirely on
land, breaking off when glaciers spread over the sea. As they drift away
from the polar region, icebergs sometimes move mysteriously in a
direction opposite to the wind, pulled by subsurface currents. Because
they melt more slowly than smaller pieces of ice, icebergs have been
known to drift as far north as 35 degrees south of the equator in the
Atlantic Ocean.

Passive plant defense comprises physical and chemical barriers that
prevent entry of pathogens, such as bacteria, or render tissues
unpalatable or toxic to the invader. The external surfaces of plants, in
addition to being covered by an epidermis and a waxy cuticle, often
carry spiky hairs known as trichomes, which either prevent feeding by
insects or may even puncture and kill insect larvae. Other trichomes are
sticky and glandular and effectively trap and immobilize insects.

Astronomers have measured the abundance of helium throughout our galaxy
and in other galaxies as well. Helium has been found in old stars, in
relatively young ones, in interstellar gas, and in the distant objects
known as quasars. Helium nuclei have also been found to be constituents
of cosmic rays that fall on the earth (cosmic "rays" are not really a
form of radiation; they consist of rapidly moving particles of numerous
different kinds). It doesn't seem to make very much difference where the
helium is found. Its relative abundance never seems to vary much. In
some places, there may be slightly more of it ; in others, slightly
less, but the ratio of helium to hydrogen nuclei always remains about
the same.

In the 1500's when the Spanish moved into what later was to become the

lived in the area for at least 2,000 years. They were an advanced
agricultural people who used irrigation to help grow their crops.

The Anasazi lived in houses constructed of adobe and wood. Anasazi
houses were originally built in pits and were entered from the roof. But
around the year 700 A.D., the Anasazi began to build their homes above
ground and join them together into rambling multistoried complexes,
which the Spanish called pueblos or villages. Separate subterranean
rooms in these pueblos ― known as kivas or chapels ― were set aside
for religious ceremonials. Each kiva had a fire pit and a hole that was
believed to lead to the underworld. The largest pueblos had five stories
and more than 800 rooms. The Anasazi family was matrilinear, that is,
descent was traced through the female.

Nitrogen, which composes 80 percent of the air we breathe, usually
causes a balmy feeling of well-being at this pressure. At a depth of 5
atmospheres, nitrogen causes symptoms resembling alcohol intoxication,
known as nitrogen narcosis. Nitrogen narcosis apparently results from a
direct effect on the brain of the large amounts of nitrogen dissolved in
the blood. Deep dives are less dangerous if helium is substituted for
nitrogen, because under these pressures helium does not exert a similar
narcotic effect.

AIDS victims suffer knowing that there is not yet a cure for their
disease; it is terminal. To add to this suffering, AIDS victims often
experience discrimina- tion. They might not be hired for a job or they
may lose a job if it is known that they have AIDS; they may not be able
to rent apartments as easily as they could without the disease; the
courts will often convict people who have purposely spread the AIDS
virus, imposing unusually harsh sentences on them; and insurance
companies may refuse to offer health or life insurance coverage to
clients who indicate that they are HIV positive and, therefore, at high
risk of getting AIDS.

There is a cat with almost as many names as its proverbial nine lives.
Depending on who is doing the talking, it is known as puma, cougar,
cata- mount, panther and mountain lion. And the zoologist may refer to
it as Felis concolor its official name in the Animal Kingdom, so to
avoid confusion, we will simply call it the mountain lion. The mountain
lion can grow up to seven feet
in length and can bring down prey as big as deer. It is the largest
member of the Felini branch of the cat family, so despite its size, it
is more closely related to the domestic cat than to the lions, tigers,
jaguars and leopards of the Pantherini branch of cats. Like the domestic
cat, the mountain lion does not have the Pantherini throat anatomy that
enables it to roar. Mountain lion is actually a misnomer because this
cat can live in almost any environment, and its range is from southern
British Columbia to the tip of South America.
British Columbia

Before he came up with this innovations in 1916, clerks fetched items
upon the request of patrons. This is not to say that grocery store
chains were new. The first well-known chain was the Great Atlantic and
Pacific Tea Company founded in 1859. More familiar with as A & P, the
chain had 2,000 stores all over America by the outbreak of World War Ⅰ.
But A & P shoppers still did their buying the old-fashioned way ―with
the help of clerks. But when America entered the war in Europe in 1916,
clerks were in short supply. Almost out of necessity, Saunders thought
up this new way of shopping which he actually patented under the name
Self- Serving Store. He opened his first store in Memphis which he
called Piggly Wiggly. He chose the odd name for his store because it
invariably attracted attention.
Great
Altlantic and Pacific Tea Company였다.

Sociologists and psychologists have argued for centuries how a person's
character is formed. The argument has long been known as "Nature versus
Nurture, " for the two main opposing theories. The first theory says
that character is formed genetically before birth. According to this
theory, nature-through genetics-determines what a person will be like.
The other theory says, on the contrary, that a person's character is
formed after birth. According to this theory , the most important
factors are cultural and environmental.

During the last century, over a million people left Ireland to live in
Canada and the United States. They left not because of religious or
political persecution. They left because of an enemy that had taken
their only food from them. Ireland in the nineteenth century was a
desperately poor country. Many people had almost nothing to eat except
potatoes. In 1845, a disease known as the potato blight attacked and
killed the entire potato crop. Soon after the crop failed, people began
to die- some from starvation, others from diseases that attacked them in
their weakened condition. The British government provide some food for
the starving, but not enough to end the famine.

The human brain responds to sudden fright by signaling the adrenal glands to
release more adrenaline, also known as epinephrine, into the bloodstream. This
substance, often called the "fight or flight hormone," prepares the body for
instant exertion. It makes the heart beat faster, stimulates the circulation,
and relaxes the bronchial passages so they can send more air through the lungs.
It can all happen very quickly because this is the body's life-preserving
response to sudden danger.
