1) ~와 거리가 멀다: know nothing about ~; be a complete stranger
It may [or can] safely be said that ~ ; We can safely say that ~
3) 그저 시간 죽이기: a mere means of killing time; only for an idle hour
They took it for granted that I would attend the reception.
He always assumes that his friends are interested in what he is doing.
There is a man who always thinks that money is to be borrowed (from others).
ANS 1) It may safely be said that those who assume that books are to be read by borrowing know nothing about the true joy of reading. These people think of reading as a mere means of killing time.
ANS 2) It is not too much to say that a man who takes it for granted that reading books is borrowing them of others does not know anything about the true joy from reading. Such a man thinks reading is nothing but a mere means of killing time.

Such a great writer as Shakespeare was not aware of the usage of the word "know-how". It is quite natural since it has been coined by the Americans even if the word is now in vogue all over the world. Therefore the key of making America what it is now can be found in the trend of changing "why to do" into "how to do". Napoleon was that a fool to the question "why do you wage a war?" But he was an imperishable genius able to win so many by making standardization of the grooves of the screws which had been used in jointing and disjointing the cannons.

British novels; English novels
2) 200페이지 정도의: with about 200 pages
3) 출판사: a publisher
Do you know any English-Korean dictionary fit for beginners?
This is a suitable novel for you to read during the vacation.
I want a moderately priced camera.

Everybody would like to make a trip to some distant stars in the space as well as into the future and past.
But we know that we could not make such a trip by means of an ordinary vehicle.
It would take thousands of years to reach the nearest star ever at the speed of millions of immensity of the space by all means.
That is to say, we must dash through the space by means of some mysterious method of transportation.
But, to achieve this exploit we should know much more than we do now about space and time.
Do we really know what space is? Probably the answer is "No". It is fortunate, however, that we can now control the space.

A desk should be a place where we write or read something.
(ANS) A desk should be a place where we write or read something. On my desk, however, all kinds of things are piled up (high) before I know it and there is no space left even for a single glass.

→ 오늘의 지도자: a leader (of) today; a boss of (in) modern times
→ 속속들이 알다; 철저히 알다: have a thorough knowledge; know thoroughly
→ 빈틈없이 감독하다: have vigilant supervisory power; exercise strict supervision
→ 판단하다: make decisions
→ 개입하다: get involved
→ 전체를 지휘하다: direct the work as a whole; command the whole work
(ANS) A leader today must have a thorough knowledge of his own job in every possible field and have vigilant supervisory power. His job is to make decisions and have others fulfill them, not to execute them himself. This is because he may probably become unable to command the whole work if he gets personally involved in any specific aspect of it.

→ ~와 알게되다: come to know~: become acquainted with~: make one's acquaintance
It is~ since…: have passed since…
인 것처럼 생각된다: it seems as if~: I feel as if [though]...
→ 오랜 친구: an old friend[acquaintance]: a friend of long standing
→ 이해심이 있는: considerate: very kind
→ 기분 좋은: jolly: amusing: cheerful
(ANS 1) It is only a few months since I became acquainted with him, but it seems to me as if he were an old friend. He is very kind and a jolly companion.
(ANS 2) Only two or three months have passed since I came to know him, but I feel as though we have been friends of long standing. He is a considerate and cheerful fellow.

If we stopped trying to know what we are ignorant of; if we ceased to try to understand what we don't know.
Today we can hear (or enjoy) lectures on the radio and (also) on TV. 「도대체 어떻게 될까?」 what on earth would becomes of us?; I wonder what would become of us.
(ANS) Today we can hear lectures on the radio and also on TV. But if we stopped trying to know what we are ignorant of, what on earth would become of us?

→ 『물론 중요하지만~』- Of course(or No doubt of Indeed or It is true) it is important to~, 「과연 ~이지만, 그러나…」 Of course; No doubt; Indeed; It is true; Undoubtedly; To be sure; I admit
⇒ It is true he is young, but he is prudent for his age.
Indeed he is a psychologist, but he doesn't seem to know how to control children.
I admit he is a good player, but he cannot compare (or be compared) with his brother.
→ 「건강에 주의한다는 것」은 to take care of one's health 와 같이 부정사를 주어로 할 수도 있지만, it를 내세워 문장의 균형을 잡는 것이 좋다.
→ 「병에 걸리는 것을 지나치게 두려워하다」/be too much afraid of getting ill. 좋지 않다/ not wise; unwise; bad policy등, 「병에 걸리다」/ become ill; fall ill, get ill; be taken ill 등.
(ANS) Of course it is important (or it is of course important) to take care of one's health, but it is not wise to be too much afraid of getting ill.

→ 잘하고(못하고)있다: be good(poor) at; be strong(weak) in; (사물을 주어로 해서) be in(out of) one's line
→ 내 경험에서 말한다면: in my experience; so far as I know from my experience
It is not necessarily so; It is not always the case
I should rather say (that)
→ 관계가 깊다: be closely connected (what); have a close relationship (to)
(ANS) I liked both English and mathematics. Though they say (that) those who are good at foreign languages are poor at mathematics, and that the reverse is also true, it is not necessarily so in my experience. I would rather say (that) these two faculties are closely connected with each other.

→ ~와 거리가 멀다: know nothing about ~; be a complete stranger
It may [or can] safely be said that ~; We can safely say that ~
→ 그저 시간 죽이기: a mere means of killing time; only for an idle hour
(ANS 1) It may safely be said that those who assume that books are to be read by borrowing know nothing about the true joy of reading. These people think of reading as a mere means of killing time.
(ANS 2) It is not too much to say that a man who takes it for granted that reading books is borrowing them of others does not know anything about the true joy from reading. Such a man thinks reading is nothing but a mere means of killing time.

[比較] swing, sway, oscillate, vibrate, fluctuate, undulate, rock
The lantern hanging overhead swung in the wind.
The tavern sign swings from a hook above the door./ He walked down the street swinging his arms.
The branches sway in the breeze.
A pendulum oscillates.
He oscillates regularly between elation and despair.
You know that if your strike a note of music, all the octave notes will vibrate./ A tuning fork vibrates when struck.
stock prices that fluctuate from day to day
undulating land/ The flag undulates in the breeze.
A cradle rocks.
The house rocked in the storm.

(X) He knew her marriage.
(O) He knew of her marriage.

You'll get the hang of it.
는 말은 get the hang(knack) of it.
have(get) something down to a science 이다.
ex) You've got your dishwashing down to a science.

Do you think I was born yesterday?
* '아는 체도 안 하더라'는 말은 영어로는 not give the time of day이라
Good morning이나 Good evening같은 인사말 조차 하지 않는다는
뜻이다. know the time of day란 말도 있는데 '하루의 시간을
Do you think I don't even know the
time of day?
Do you think I was
born yesterday?

ex) " Uh-huh.(그렇죠.) " / " Mm-hmm.(아, 예.) "
" I see.(무슨 말인지 알겠어요.) "
" You're right.(그러게 말야.) "
" That makes sense.(그 말에 일리가 있어요.) "...
ex) " You can say that again. "
" You('ve) said it.(맛는 말씀하셨어요.)"
" And how ! " " That's it.(바로 그거야.)"
니다.
때로는 얘기하는 사람이 " You know what I mean ?
" Yes,I do." / " Of course. " / " OK. " / " I guess so. "

----------------------------------------------------------
Is that so ? / Is that right ? / How interesting ! /
Really ? / That's news to me. / I didn't know that./
What ? / No kidding ! / You must be kidding ! /
You don't say. / Come on ! / Give me a break ! /
----------------------------------------------------------
" Is that so ? "/ " Is that right ? "/ " How interesting! "
때에는, " Oh, are you ? " / " Oh, doesn't he ?
예를 들어, " I am worn out.
Oh,are you ? "
He doesn't know the ABC of English."
라는 말에 " Oh,doesn't he ?"
That's news to me. " / " I didn't know that. "
" What ? " / " No kidding. "
미국인이 많이 쓰는 표현 중에 " Give me a break !
