knock on wood: 귀신은 물러가라
→ 말 뒤에 붙이는 일종의 주문 같은 것.

[比較] hit, beat, knock, punch, slap, strike, stroke
hit는 「단번」의 타격을 뜻하나, beat는 계속(연속)적인 타격을 암시하는 이외에도 「타격을 가하다; 타격을 가해서 상처를 입히다」는 뜻으로 쓰이는 경우, hit와 달리 human noun이 주어, 목적어가 된다.
He hit the ball with a bat./ The men beat him unmercifully.
strike는 「(상당한 힘을 가하여) 치다, 때리다」는 뜻으로, 「타격」과 관련해서 가장 일반적으로 쓰이는 말이고 hit보다 감정적 의미를 강하게 반영한다.
He struck his enemy on the mouth.
strike와 혼동되기 쉬운 낱말에 stroke가 있는데, stroke는 「쓰다듬다」란 뜻이다.
She stroked the cat.
knock에는 「타격을 가하고 동시에 소리를 내게 하다」는 뜻과 「타격을 가하여 상대방을 쓰러뜨리다」는 뜻이 있다.
He knocked on the door./ The car knocked the old man down.
pat은「어깨 등을 가볍게 두드리다」는 뜻으로 쓰이는 낱말이다. punch는 「주먹」으로 친다는 뜻이고 slap은 「손바닥」으로 친다는 뜻을 갖는다.
He patted me on the back./ She slapped the naughty child.
「가볍게 빨리 두드리다」는 뜻으로는 rap이 있고, 특히 「손이나 발로 가볍게 빠른 속 도로 두드린다」는 뜻으로는 tap이 있다.
He rapped the door with his cane.
The teacher tapped her fingers on the desk impatiently.

차를 타고 가던 몇 명의 젊은이들이 갑자기 차를 세우고는 급히 뛰어 내려 차 주위를 한바퀴 돌고 나서 다시 차에 타고 길을 계속 간다. 그런 행동을 하는 데는 상당한 스피드와 신속함이 요구되기 때문에 소방훈련 (fire drill)이란 말을 쓴다. 미국사람들은 중국인을 「갈팡질팡 하다가 제자리로 돌아와 차분히 일을 하는 사람들」이라고 생각한다. 그래서 이 같은 기이한 행동을 「Chinese Fire Drill」이라 한다.

Bing Crosby writes of an experience he had while traveling by train through the
Southwest many years ago.
Our train was stopped, and we were told there'd be a wait, so I walked up and down

up and down, too, swinging his lantern. He came up to me and said,"They tell me that
rascal Bim Crosland's aboard. They say he's quite a singer, but as far as
I'm concerned, Larry Ross could run him in a gopher hole."
I agreed with him and thought no more of it. In the morning, there came a knock
on our door. It was the brakeman. He eyed me with a twinkle and said, "You
hoaxed me, didn't you? You're Bim Crosland yourself! Just for that, you've got to
sign my book."
