1893년 미구그이오클라호마 러쉬(Oklahoma Rush)때 선착순으로 달려가서
말뚝만 박으면 (pound a stake)땅의 임자가 되던 시절이 있었다. 10만명이넘
는 미국인들이 땅을 차지하기위해 몰려갔다. 비교해서 'pull up stakes'라
는 표현이었다. '말뚝을 뽑다'로 되어있는 이 표현은 '떠나기 위해 준비하다
'라는 뜻을 가진다.
A:Our English teacher Michelle Smith is pulling up stakes to go back
to Canada.
B:Really? Why?
A:Maybe she's losing money because of the exchange rates.
B:I'm sorry to hear that. She's been very helpful.
A:I agree. However she said that she would return to our nation as
soon as the economic situation improves.
B:She's such a nice teacher that I'd like to pound stakes around her
house to keep her from leaving us.

했습니다.
B:그분은 너무나도 좋은 선생님이라서 우리를 떠나지 못하게 집주변에 말
뚝이라도 박아놓고 싶군요.
