LG Electronics Inc. has developed the nation's first 16-speed
CD-ROM drive after six months of R&D by 11 researchers.
LG's 16-speed CD-ROM drive has a data transmission speed of
2,400 KB per second. Mass-production of the new drive will start

Mindful of the nation's declining economy, the Korean
Broadcasting System (KBS) will remove from its fall programming,
which starts today, elements which may foster excessive
extravagance or consumption.
최근의 경제위기와 관련, KBS는 14일부터 실시되는 가을 프로그램 개
편에서 과다 물량투입 및 과소비를 조장하는 요소를 억제할 계획이다.

programming for fall. As the state-run broadcasting company, we
felt that we should take the lead,'' said Ahn Kuk-jong, head of
the programming operation section at KBS.
KBS프로그램운영국 안국종국장은 "이번 가을 개편에서의 가장 큰 목
표는 '거품 제거'라고 할 수 있으며, 공영방송으로서 앞장서 해야 할
일으로 생각하고 있다"고 밝혔다.

He explained that conscious efforts will be made to shun
productions which mobilize large numbers of people, either casts
or audience, and involve expensive prizes that are irrelevant to
the quality of programs, luxurious stages or drama settings and
inviting foreign entertainers who demand high appearance fees.
KBS will also practice moderation in the costume and makeup of
stars young people are likely to imitate and put restraints on
the import of foreign films and sports programs, Ahn said.
그는 또 "KBS는 이번 개편을 통해 과다한 출연자 및 방청객, 프로그
램의 완성도와 직결되지 않는 고액의 경품, 호사스런 무대와 드라마
세트 그리고 높은 출연료를 요구하는 외국 연예인 초청등을 억제할 계
획"이라고 밝히고 "청소들이 모방하기 쉬운 인기인들의 의상과 분장에
대한 제재조처를 실시하는 한편 외국에서 제작된 영화와 스포츠 프로
그램의 수입도 억제할 방침"이라고 말했다.

The network, on the constructive side, will actively seek
measures for economic improvement through its news and other
similar programs. ``KBS News 9,'' the popular evening news
program on KBS-1 (bilingual), for example, will begin a new
section titled ``Feature: Reviving the Economy.'' ``Whistle,'' a
new program to be aired on KBS-1 (Fri. at 11:50-12:40 p.m.) will
spotlight success stories of small- and medium-sized businesses.
KBS는 개편과 관련, 뉴스와 관련프로그램을 통해 경제를 살리기 위한
실질적 방안을 모색할 방침이다. KBS보도프로그램의 중심인 KBS-1방
송의 "KBS뉴스9"(음성다중)에 "기획뉴스, 경제를 살립시다" 코너를 신
설하는 한편, 매주 금요일 밤 11시50분부터 12시40분까지 중소기업인
들의 성공 사례를 조명하는 '휘파람을 부세요'가 KBS-1방송에서 방영
된다.

The fall rescheduling has resulted in 19 new programs, six on
KBS-1 and 13 on KBS-2. The programs reflect the broadcasting
company's other objectives: to increase programs with active
audience participation, to contribute to people's adaptation to
globalization and to pay more attention to children and youth.
가을개편으로 KBS-1 방송에 6개와 KBS-2방송에 13개등 모두 19개 프

기관의 잘못된 관행을 살펴보는 민원프로그램.

``Thursday Report,'' to be aired on KBS-1 (Thu. at 10:15-11
p.m.), is feature-style coverage of domestic and foreign issues
of wide interest.
"목요리포트" (1TV, 목 오후 10시15분-11시): 국내외 주요 관심사에
대한 심층시사 프로그램.

``TV Date,'' to be aired on KBS-2 (Tue. at 8:25-9:15 p.m.),
provides opportunities for the audience to meet with celebrities
of their choice.
"TV데이트" (2TV, 화, 오후 8시25분-9시15분):시청자가 유명인사를
직접 만나는 프로그램.

``Idadoshi's Korea Experience,'' to be aired on KBS-2 (Mon.-Fri.
at 8:15-8:25 p.m.), is a critical view of Korea's culture and
customs through the eyes of a foreigner.
"이다도시의 한국체험" (2TV, 월-금, 오후 8시15분-8시25분): 외국인
의 눈에 비친 한국인의 관습과 의식을 그려보는 프로그램.

``World Marriages'' (KBS-2, Mon.-Fri. at 9-9:15 a.m.) introduces
the marriage custom of other countries in comparison to that of
Korea.

해 외국의 결혼 풍습을 소개하는 프로그램.

``Lee So-ra's Propose'' (KBS-2, Sat. at 11:50-12:50 p.m.), a
quality music and talk show in a salon setting led by singer Lee
So-ra. The program, successor to the ``Lee Moon-se Show,''
targets college students and young workers.
"이소라의 프로포즈" (2TV, 토, 밤 11시50분-12시50분): 가수 이소라
가 진행하는 살롱 뮤직토크쇼. '이문세 쇼'의 후속 프로그램으로 대학
생과 젊은 직장인을 주시청 대상으로 한 프로그램.

Kwon, who recently fled to the United States, sent a fax message
Sunday to the Korea Broadcasting System (KBS), alleging that Lee
received 1.3 billion won from Daewoo in December 1995 in return
for promising Daewoo contracts for an Army helicopter project.

인터캐스트(intercast):PC를 TV겸용으로 만드는 신기술. PC로
TV프로그램을 보면서 인터넷 정보도 찾아볼수 있도록 한 것으로
인터넷(Internet)과 방송(Broadcast)의 합성어이다. 그 원리는 TV방송국이
프로그램을 PC로 수신할 수 있도록 디지털신호로 바꿔 일반방송처럼 전파에
실어 보낸다. 현재 미국유수의 방송사인 NBC, CNN 등이 이 기술을 이용,
시험 방송에 나섰고 PC통신서비스회상니 아메리카온라인등도 이 기술
확산에 발벗고 나서고 있다. 국내에서는 KBS, MBC등이 1997년4월부터
시험방송에 나설 계획으로 마무리 작업이 한창이다.

유승창·이남석 KB증권 연구원은 "이번 이번 편입과정에서 우리은행이 보유하게 되는 신주는 연결회계에서 자사주로 처리되며 6개월 내에 매각의무가 발생한다"며 "당분간 우리금융지주의 주가는 자사주관련 오버행 우려 해소 시기 및 방법이 중요할 것"이라고 전망했다.
Yoo Seung-chang and Lee Nam-seok, researchers at KB Securities, said, "In this transfer process, Woori Bank's new shares will be treated as treasury stocks in consolidated accounting and will be required to be sold within six months. For the time being, the timing and method of resolving overhang concerns over treasury stock price will be important."
