[比較] suspect, surmise, suppose, suspicion
suspect는 경멸적인 뜻을 가진 말로, 충분하지 않은 증거를 가지고서 또는 전혀 증거 없이 ‘(죄가 있다고, 거짓이라고, 가짜라고, 바람직하지 않다고, 흠이 있다고, 나쁘다고) 상상하다’를 의미한다.
They suspected him of cheating at cards, but there was nothing to justify an open accusation./ He suspected that there was sabotage in connection with the fire.
surmise에는 suspect같이 추한 함축된 뜻은 없다. 다만 확실한 또는 강력한 증거도 없이 ‘생각하다, 추측하다’의 뜻이다.
I surmised that you were his son from your striking resemblance to him. suspect는 surmise의 뜻을 나타낼 수도 있지만, 나쁜 뜻을 나타내려고 하지 않는 경우에는, 후자가 모호하지 않으므로 그것을 쓰는 것이 좋다.
suppose는 참이든 아니든 관계없이, 논의를 위해서 또는 결론을 찾아내기 위해서 ‘추측하다, 생각으로 기울다, 관념을 가지다’, 또한 가설적으로 ‘가정하다’는 의미이다.
Do you suppose that she wished to remain unmarried?/ The roads were no better than the old had supposed./ All right, suppose we do give him the money? What will happen then?
suspicion은 ‘의심, 미심, 수상함’의 의미하는 명사지만, 무식한 이들이 흔히 동사로 쓰는 수가 있다. 물론 비표준적 용법이며, 표준용법에서는 suspect를 써야 한다.

[比較] warrant, warranty, guarantee, guaranty
warrant와 guarantee는 같은 어원에서 온 이중어(doublet)로, 무엇이 안전한가 진짜인가를 가리키는 경우 흔히 바뀌어 쓰인다. warrant는 ‘어떤 물건이 겉으로 보기에는 똑같다, 주장대로 진짜다라는 보증을 하다’를 의미한다.
warranted silverware/ I warrant he's telling the truth
guarantee는 ‘어떤 물건이 주장하는 바와 같지 않은 경우에는 그것을 새로 바꾸어 준다, 또는 그 값을 물어준다고 서약함으로써 그것을 보증하다’란 뜻이다.
The watch is guaranteed for a year.
그러나 이 말은 광고문에 함부로 사용되어, 극히 조심해서 읽지 않으면 무엇이 보증되어 있는지 알 수 없다. warrant에는 또한 guarantee에는 없는 ‘정당화하다’(justify'의 뜻이 있다.

warrant와 guarantee는 명사로도 쓰이나 ‘구속영장, 체포장’의 뜻으로는 warrant만이 쓰인다. 이 뜻으로 흔히 사용되는 불쾌한 연상에서 ‘보증’ 따위의 다른 뜻으로는 이 말을 피하고, guarantee가 흔히 쓰이는 경향이 있다.
warranty는 명사로만, guaranty는 명사와 동사로 특별한 의미에 사용된다. warranty는 주로 법률 용어로, ‘매매 따위의 계약에 관련해서, 어떤 특별한 사항을 보증하는 약속’ 또는 ‘토지 증서에서 양도받는 사람이 상위의 권리를 가지고 소유권을 주장하는 제 삼자의 방해를 받지 않고 부동산을 자유로 향유할 수 있다는 것을, 양도하는 사람이 보증하는 서면 계약’을 의미한다. a warranty deed는 이런 계약이 명시된 증서, ‘하자 담보 증서’로 a quitclaim deed(권리 양도증서)와 구별된다. 보험용어로, warranty는 보험 계약의 무효로 되는 ‘보험 가입자가 행하는 진술, 계약서’를 말한다. 또한 영장(warrant, writ)같은 ‘사법문서’(judicial document)를 의미하기도 한다.
guaranty는 ‘보증’(warrant), '보증계약‘, ’담보(물)‘를 의미한다. 동사로는 ’보증하다‘(guarantee)의 뜻이다. 영국에서는 미국에서 guarantee를 사용할 문맥에서 guaranty를 많이 사용하고, 미국에서는 이 두 말이 가진 모든 용법에서 guarantee를 주로 쓰고 있다.
