A Lap Pillow Puts You to Sleep
From Japan, the answer to the question, what to give the man who has everything.
A lap to lay his weary head on.
Not a wife or a girlfriend or even a complete body.
Just a pillow in the shape of a woman's lap.
The lap pillow was designed by a Tokyo entrepreneur
who said he based it on a friend not on my wife
because we wanted it to resemble a slim woman.
Well, the lap pillow will come in handy for him
since he'll no doubt be sleeping on the couch from now on.
* put A to sleep A를 잠들게 하다
* what to give 무엇을 줘야할지: what to give는 'what you should give'의 줄임말이다.
* lay A on B A를 B에 놓다, 두다
* come in handy (언젠가) ...

Now you took on pretty risky roles, as I just mentioned. Why?
Mm, I think part of reason is the fate.
* take on ...을 (떠)맡다

S1 : Here comes the teacher. Let's stop talking now.
S2 : It might be a good idea to pretend to study English.
T : Sorry guys. I had something important to do.
Did you keep quiet while I was away?
S2 : Of course we did. We were studying English.
T : Is that true? Ah, look around you! If you keep your surroundings clean, you can study harder.
Let's pick up just one thing each.
Ss : Yes, we will.

Now, let's do some role-playing with this dialogue.
Let's try it once with the book and once without the book.
Suppose you are A and that your partner is B.
Who's your partner? Talk to your partner.
I'd like a different role. I'd like to take role A.
A 역할을 할께요.)
Shall we switch/change/swap roles?
Come on, isn't there a volunteer?
If you don't volunteer, I'll just assign you a role.

T : Everyone, It's time for listening practice. First of all, let's check the tape recorder. Is it clear enough?
S1 : Not bad, Mr. Kim.
T : Can you hear in the back?
S2 : No, Mr. Kim. Is it at the maximum?
T : I wonder.
S2 : If so, I don't think the tape recorder works properly.
T : Oh, I'm sorry. I've got too much bass. Just a second. I'll try it again. Is the volume all right now?
S2 : Yes, Mr. Kim.
T : Good. Now, you will hear the dialogue. Listen carefully.

T : Is there anyone without an answer sheet? All right.
Begin working now and finish within 30 minutes.
S2 : Mr. Kim, I cannot understand the directions of question 9.
T : Let's see. You should choose just one word or phrase that best completes the sentence. Is it clear now?
S2 : Yes, thank you.
S1 : Can I get another answer sheet? I want to change some of my answers.
T : Here you are, but you must hurry up.

S1 : What's that big bandage on your shin for?
S2 : While running down the bleachers at the school playing field, I fell down and scraped my shin badly.
But I didn't take it seriously at that time, so I just cleaned it with rubbing alcohol, and left it that way.
That was a mistake. My scrape turned into a big sore, and now puss is oozing out of it.
It's badly infected. Now the school nurse gave me this big bandage and put me on antibiotics.

Did you catch the announcement just now?
I listened absent-mindedly.

(In the infirmary)
N : Did you catch the announcement just now?
S : Yes, Ms. Kim.
N : Then why aren't the students coming here?
S : They are coming.
N : Okay, you are next. Roll your sleeve up, please.
S : (After getting injected, student cries) Ouch.
N : Don't rub, but press for about 2 minutes.
S : Yes, Ms. Kim.

Whenever I ask for assistance, her invariable answer is "I'd like to, but I'm too busy just now."

Planning is important, but it is action that gets things done.
If you just plan to lose weight, or just plan to start a business, it never happens.
The way to make things happen is to take action.
Find something you can do right now, today, and that will bring you closer to your goal.
Don't put it off until the time is right.
No matter how unimportant your action may seem, it makes you start in the right direction.
Continue taking action every day and you start to gain momentum.

Many colleges are encouraging students to get out into the world and learn something practical.
Not that anyone has found a magical substitute for textbooks, term papers and lecture halls,
but most schools now recognize that real-world experience is a vital part of an education.
Two thirds of Webster's 2,200 fellow students at Barnard will do at least one internship before graduation.
Kathy O'Byrne, professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, says internships can be especially good for students' problem solving and communication skills.
“If you look at what employers want in young hires, it's just these qualities,” she says.

Jennie Ruiz is a computer genius.
When she was only four years old, she began using her brother's computer.
Just using the computer was not enough for Jennie, though.
Soon, she was making up her own computer games.
She would get an idea for a game.
Then she would write a program for it.
News about Jennie's exciting games spread quickly.
Now, Jennie has her own computer business.
She creates games, and sells them in stores all over the area.
“That's just the beginning,” she says, pointing to a keyboard and screen on her desk.
“Soon I'll be selling the JennieⅠ,” she says.
“It's wonderful. And it's just for kids.”
Jennie Ruiz
Jennie

It's frustrating.
You're excited about the work you've just completed on your computer.
You start to print.
And suddenly it happens.
You run out of ink.
To make matters worse, when you take the empty color cartridge out of the printer and shake it, you can still hear ink inside.
Although only one color has run dry, the whole cartridge is now useless.
Obviously, throwing away unused ink translates into wasted money.
Well, the good news is that we recently introduced a system whereby each color is separated into individual ink tanks.
They're called “Eco Tanks” and they dramatically reduce a printer's running costs.

Imagine you were asked to work overtime and you didn't want to do it.
Then you were told you would get paid twice as much money.
You would probably become more cooperative.
This idea also works with children.
A few years ago, a child of mine wouldn't brush her teeth before going to bed.
Nothing we did could make her change her mind.
Then, my parenting class teacher recommended that I should give her rewards.
So I used this simple phrase, which worked wonders:
“If you go and brush your teeth now, we will have time to read three stories instead of just one.”
Whenever she heard it, she would jump up and brush her teeth right away.

It is difficult to say just how urbanized the world has become.
With urban growth taking place rapidly, it is impossible even for experts to do more than provide estimates.
According to the UN data, almost half of the world’s population is now urban.
These data make the very different definitions of urban used by different countries.
Some countries count any settlement of 1,000 people or more as urban,
while others use 10,000 as the minimum for an urban settlement; and Japan uses 50,000 as the cut-off.
This, by the way, tells us that urbanization is a relative phenomenon.
In countries like Peru, a settlement of 2,000 represents a significant center.
However, a much larger concentration of people is required to count as “urban.”

When Angela moved to our small town, everything started to change.
At the time, some members of the town's swimming club, including myself, were preparing for the National Championships,
which were just six months away.
I had always been the best, and everyone thought that I would be chosen for the relay race.
But now I had the new competition.
There was only one place for the butterfly on the relay team, and we both wanted it.
For two weeks it was awful.
Angela was always the star.
She was faster than I, and her form was better, too.
My chances of being selected were disappearing fast.
My fear caused me to be unfriendly to Angela.
I refused to speak to her and never said anything good about her.
Angela

Dear Sally,
I'm so excited to hear that you're finally going to visit me here in Seoul.
I've really missed you since I moved away from Australia and I've been waiting for you to come for so long.
I've made an arrangement to take off a couple of weeks from work, so I'll be able to spend a lot of time with you.
Please let me know what you want to do here and I'll prepare everything for it.
You should check out the highlights of Korea online.
If you want to go somewhere outside of Seoul, just let me know and I'll be happy to rent a car.
I hope that I'll be able to do many things with you.
I can't wait to see you.
Bye for now,
Suzanne
Sally
Suzanne

If you think clowning is just putting up makeup and acting like an idiot, you are wrong.
Anybody can be an idiot, but it takes many hours of practice to make your idiocy funny.
Aha! There's the trick.
I have had thirteen years of being a funny idiot, so it came to me naturally.
But making jokes is really hard.
I have to write down ideas when they pop into my head, or else I don't remember them.
Another trick of being a clown is not to scare kids.
It is tough.
Now whenever I go to see kids, I take off the dark stuff and just wear my bright undershirt,
making kids relaxed and willing to enjoy my show.

The man told his doctor that he wasn't able to do all the things around the
house that he used to do. When the examination was complete, he said, "Now,
Doc, I can take it. Tell me in plain English what is wrong with me."
"Well, in plain English," the doctor replied, "you're just lazy."
"Okay," said the man. "Now give me the medical term so I can tell my wife."

The pet-shop customer couldn't believe his good fortune. The parrot he had
just bought could recite Shakespeare's sonnets, imitate opera stars and
intone Homer's epic poems in Greek. And he cost only $600.
Once the man got the bird home, however, not another word passed his beak.
After three weeks the disconsolate customer returned to the shop and asked
for his money back. "When we had this bird," said the proprietor, "he
could recite poetry and sing like an angel. Now you want me to take him
back when he's no longer himself? Well, all right. Out of the goodness
of my heart I'll give you $100." Reluctantly the man accepted his loss.
Just as the door shut behind him he heard the parrot say to the shop
owner, "Don't forget―my share is $250."

A girl doing her homework asked her father to explain the difference
between anger and exasperation. Going to the telephone, he dialed a
number and had his daughter listen. "Hello," he said to the man who
answered, "is Melvin there?"
"There's no one here named Melvin," was the reply. "Why don't you look
up numbers before you dial them?"
The father dialed the number again. "Hello, is Melvin there?" he asked.
"Now look!" the man yelled. "I just told you that there's no Melvin
here!" Then he slammed down the receiver.
"You see," the father explained, "that was anger. Now I'll show you
exasperation."
Again he dialed the number, and when a voice roared "Hello," he calmly
said. "This is Melvin. Has there been any calls for me?"

Concerned because he thought he was paying too little attention to his
two small daughters, a friend of mine decided to put aside his work
one day and take part in their games.
Just when he was beginning to feel a certain satisfaction at having
fulfilled his duty, the youngest asked, "Daddy, can we go and play now?"

A young lady dismissed the young man to whom she was engaged because he drank.
A few days after she had told him she would never speak to him again, a little
boy brought a note from the wretched young man.
The note read this: "Faithless, yet still beloved Fanny! My sufferings are
more than I can bear. I cannot live without your love. I have therefore just
taken poison, the effect of which I am now beginning to feel. When you read
these lines, I shall have joined the great majority. See that I am decently
buried, and shed a silent tear over my tomb in remembrance of the days gone
by―Your dead George."
When the young lady had finished reading the note, she asked the boy who had
brought it what he was waiting for.
"The gentleman who sent it told me to wait for an answer," was the reply.

B:Really! When did that happen?
A:A week ago. They met last summer... and now, just think... they'll
be married soon.

Guess what!(알아맞춰 봐!)는 I have something important to tell you.
[Guess how old I
am!]

A:There's a bus now. We'll have to run to catch it.
B:O.K--. Oh no! We just missed it.
A:Never mind. There'll be another one in ten minutes.
**
Oh, no!
Get
on the bus. [택시를 타라]는 Get in the taxi.
Never mind=Don't worry 걱정마. another는 부정대명사로서 막연히, 또

A:You beat me at poker again.
B:It's just beginner's luck.
A:Today is my first day on the job.
Wish me luck.
B:Good luck.
= [I'll keep my fingers crossed.]
= [I wish you the best of luck]
A:I broke my leg in the car accident.
B:You're lucky it wasn't wrose.
A:Keep winning at gambling. Lady luck is
smiling on me. My luck is holding.
B:Now,I've lost! I think my luck has
run out.
**
I hit a streak of good luck.

A:I brought you flowers for our anniversary.
B:You've stolen my heart.
[=You've won my heart.]
A:And now I want a divorce.
B:You've broken my heart.
A:My mother was in a car accident just now.
B:Take heart! Be brave! There's a good chance that no one died in the
crash.

- Wonderful Tonight sung by Eric Clapton
It's late in the evening
She is wondering what clothes to wear
She puts on her makeup
And brushes her long blonde hair
And then she asks me
"Do I look all right?"
And I say "Yes, you look wonderful tonight"
We go to a party
And everyone turns to see this beautiful lady
is walking around with me
And then she asks me "Do you feel all right?"
And I say "Yes,I feel wonderful tonight"
I feel wonderful
because I see the love light in your eyes
And the wonder of it all is
that you just don't realize how much I love you
It's time to go home now
And I've got an aching head
So I give her the car keys
And she helps me to bed
And then I tell her as I turn out the light
I say "My darling you're wonderful tonight
Oh, my darling you're wonderful tonight"

- OLD FRIENDS sung by EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL
Not for the first time I look back on all those years
Not for the last time names will ring in my ears
When there was just a gang of us
storming the town by train and bus
A moment of thought this heart sends to old friends
Not for the first time I look back on my first love
Unable to speak or think or move, hand in glove
But what of it now where is she,
she who once meant so much to me
Because we are not, I can't pretend now old friends
I was told love should hold old friends
I was told love should hold old friends
But when you leave
You will close the door behind you
And time won't make amends to old friends
Standing here with my arm around you
Life's moved on

When there was just a gang of us storming the town by train
and bus.
A moment of thought this heart sends to old friends.
Not for the first time I look back on my first love.
Unable to speak or think or move hand in glove.
But what of bit now really she who once meant so much to me.
Because we are not,I can't pretend now old friends.
I was told love should hold all the friends.
But when you leave, you will close the door behind you.
And time won't make amends to old friends.
Standing here with my arm around you,
Life's moved on.

< The First Time > Sung By Surface
-
You know I won't forget the times to share together holding
hands and walking in the park
Sometime we'll have to do it all again
We were so happy then
I have no regrets
Can't you tell from the look on my face that I love you
more today
The first time I looked into your eyes I cried
Do you remember the first time we fell in love
You looked into my eyes wiped the tears away the first
time when we fell in love
Although some time has passed I still remember just like
it was yesterday
But time is moving fast
The love I have for you time won't every change
I will always feel the same now until the end
Memories we shared will live forever
Deep inside my heart I know I'll never forget

< Radio Romance > Sung By 티파니
From who? Just from the one who loves you baby
I see you baby every single day holding onto my best
friend
But you don't see me
So I make the same request now every single night
Going out from me to you on the dedication line(?)
My secret admiration I won't reveal
I wouldn't want to hurt no one by telling how I feel(?)
The DJ knows my voice now
He even knows my choice now
He never says my name
He just says from the one who loves you baby
One night you'll hear a song
And then you'll know just who is from
I see you baby every single day holding onto my best
friend
But you don't see me

True - Spandau Ballet
So true
Funny how it seems always in time but never in line for dreams
Head over heels when toe to toe
* toe to toe : 마주보고 서서
This is the sound of my soul
This is the sound
I bought ticket to the world
But now I've come back again
Why do I find it hard to write the next line
Oh I want the truth to be said
I know this much is true
With a thrill in my head and a pill on my tongue
Desolve the nerves that have just begun
Listening to the Marvin all night long
This is the sound of my soul
This is the sound
Always sliping from my hands sands a time of its own
Take your seaside arms and write the next line
