cock-and-bull story: 앞뒤가 맞지 않는 이야기(an untrue story)

English literature of Korea must be regarded as of Korean Sciences because it has been taught to Korean Language at least for forty years. As it is a completely koreanized science like electro engineering politics and library science, I believe it is quite natural for korean scholars to write about it in korean language for the easy understanding of Korean people. Translation without interpretation of footnotes on it is likely to be hard to understand. So it is sometimes rather convenient to read the source language text in itself. As a result translation seems less useful. We cannot make the foreign words ours just by changing them into Korean.

1) 진실로: really; from the bottom of one's heart
2) 희망하다: hope [or wish] for; aspire after
We should make up some counterplan for it.
It is necessary for us to work out a new countermeasure.
It is necessary for us to take measures to deal with [or meet] a new situation.
He lost no time in taking measures for its reduction.
I will take steps to see that your application is processed.
We should consider the counterplan for our collective security.
ANS 1) If you really want peace, it is no use merely hoping for it. You must study about war and take necessary steps to prevent war.
ANS 2) If you aspire after peace from the bottom of your heart, it is of no use just to wish for it. You must have more informations about war and take all the necessary precautions against it.

Had they known ~ 으로 한다.
2) If they knew … they would change …
3) If they had realized what was shortly going to happen, they would have changed their plans.
→ 「이제 막 ~하려고 한다」 be about to -부정사 (=be just going to -부정사/ be shortly going to -부정사)
If it had not been for ~ =Had it not been for
If it were not for ~ =were it not for
ANS) Had they known what was about to happen, they would have changed their plans.

→ 한국에 온지 얼마 안 되는 외국인: foreigners who have come to Korea recently; foreigners who have just come to Korea
→ 일반적으로: in general; generally (speaking)
→ 말씨가 빠르다: speak fast
→ 상당히 주의하지 않으면: unless we pay considerable attention; if we do not pay attention.
→ 무슨 말을 하고 있는지: what they are talking about
→ 알 수가 없다: can hardly follow (them); cannot understand (them)
(ANS 1) Foreigners, who have come to Korea recently, generally speak at such a fast pace that it is difficult for us to understand them if we do not pay attention.
(ANS 2) Foreigners, who have just come to Korea, speak a little too fast in general. Unless we pay considerable attention, we cannot understand what they are talking about.

I get a headache just thinking about that.

Never mind about the broken vase. Just giving me money will be O.K.

Just about.

How do you like do your coffee?
-Just a little bit of sugar, please.
Black, please. / Plain, please.
cf) How about a nightcap?

What's the average life span of a refrigerator?
사람의 '수명'은 life expectancy라고도 하고 life span이라고도 한다.
What's the average life span of a refrigerator?
This car has just about had it이라고 하면
'이 차는 거의 수명이 다 됐다'는 말이 된다. has(have) had it은

It's in the ballpark.
about란 말을 써서 about how many? 또는 about how much?
Approximately how many? 또는 Roughly, how much?,
Give me a rough figure, Give me a ballpark figure
'대충맞다'는 말도 just about right라고도
하고 It's in the ball park 라고도 한다.

"Do you believe in resurrection?" the boss asked one of
his younger employees.
"Yes, sir."
"Well, then, that makes everything just fine," the boss went on.
" About an hour after you left yesterday to go to your grandfather's
funeral, he stopped in to see you."

Lee has denied the allegations. He said Kwon swindled the money
from Daewoo, and that he had been just as surprised as everyone
else to learn about it.

Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.
The first story is about connecting the dots.

There is a big gap, a chasm, between the two parties on just about every issue,
from the recognition of restructuring measures, economic performance,
regionalism, and accepted forms of political struggle.

Just let your hair down and have a good time.

Bai Ling, thank you so much for coming in, so good to see you.
Now you took on pretty risky roles, as I just mentioned. Why?
Mm, I think part of reason is the fate.

Wow. I wanted to talk to you about Red Corner the movie.
When you saw the script, you obviously knew it would be controversial and China would not like it.
Actually not, I was more in love with the role,
so when I read the script I feel like I don't know my heart just connected,
I said I want to play this role, I want to meet with the director so I...

It's a good idea to bring a small gift when you go to a dinner party.
Flowers are always nice, or you might bring a bottle of wine if you know that the family drinks it.
You should arrive on time or five to ten minutes late.
Don't get there early.
If you're going to be more than fifteen minutes late, you should call and tell them.
Try to relax at the dinner table.
If you are confused about choosing the correct fork, knife, or spoon, just watch the other guests, and follow them.

Diamonds are older than nearly everything else on earth.
They have been used to cut glass, cure snakebites, and charm kings and queens.
Famed for their flashing beauty, diamonds are the hardest substance on earth and among the most useful.
However, digging for diamonds is an expensive and exhausting operation.
Miners may dig through about 250 tons of rock to find just one stone.

When I first opened “Body Shop” in 1976
my only object was to earn enough to feed my children.
Today “Body Shop” is a company rapidly growing all around the world.
In the years since I began I have learned a lot.
Much of what I have learned will be found in this book.
It says about how to run a successful business.
It's not a normal business book, nor is it just about my life.
The message is that to succeed in business you have to be different.
In business, as in life, you need to enjoy yourself,
to have a feeling of family and to feel excited by the unexpected things.

You can raise your children to be money-savvy.
The earlier you start their first lessons, the better.
When it comes to teaching kids about money, we has a problem.
It's not just that 85% of high school students aren't getting any personal-finance education in a school.
It's also that the education seems to be having little impact.
Learning about money in high school is too late because at this age, money habits are already set.

I wonder how many people give up just when success is almost within reach.
They endure day after day, and just when they're about to make it, decide they can't take any more.
The difference between success and failure is not that great.
Successful people have simply learned the value of staying in the game until it is won.
Those who never make it are the ones who quit too soon.
When things are darkest, successful people refuse to give up because they know they're almost there.
Things often seem at their worst just before they get better.
The mountain is steepest at the summit, but that's no reason to turn back.

The general was determined not to allow the enemy's forces a return voyage, but to send them to the bottom of the sea.
Standing high on his flagship, he engaged his entire fleet in a battle with several hundred enemy ships.
Just as the battle was about to be won, the general was wounded by a stray enemy bullet.
He ordered his aides, “Do not announce my death until the battle is over! Do not weep! Go and beat the drum.
Finish the enemy to the last one!”

A true apology is more than just acknowledgement of a mistake.
It's recognition that something you have said or done has damaged a relationship
― and that you care enough about the relationship to want it repaired and restored.
It's never easy.
Admitting to being in the wrong hurts.
But once you make yourself face up to it, swallow your pride.
It can be a wonderfully cleansing and healing thing.
Being human, we all need the art of this.

Advised about the miserable situation of pandas who have been driven out of their homes, thousands of people will contribute money to save the pandas' natural habitat.
Similarly, “Save the whale” campaigns have been in progress for years, and millions of dollars have been spent to help hunted whales.
Currently, in many areas, bats are endangered, but don't expect a campaign to save them from extinction.
Bats just don't have the appeal of whales and pandas.
Most people are so repulsed by bats that wildlife organizations have been reluctant to encourage a campaign to help them; they are convinced that no one would be interested.

Jennie Ruiz is a computer genius.
When she was only four years old, she began using her brother's computer.
Just using the computer was not enough for Jennie, though.
Soon, she was making up her own computer games.
She would get an idea for a game.
Then she would write a program for it.
News about Jennie's exciting games spread quickly.
Now, Jennie has her own computer business.
She creates games, and sells them in stores all over the area.
“That's just the beginning,” she says, pointing to a keyboard and screen on her desk.
“Soon I'll be selling the JennieⅠ,” she says.
“It's wonderful. And it's just for kids.”
Jennie Ruiz
Jennie

It's frustrating.
You're excited about the work you've just completed on your computer.
You start to print.
And suddenly it happens.
You run out of ink.
To make matters worse, when you take the empty color cartridge out of the printer and shake it, you can still hear ink inside.
Although only one color has run dry, the whole cartridge is now useless.
Obviously, throwing away unused ink translates into wasted money.
Well, the good news is that we recently introduced a system whereby each color is separated into individual ink tanks.
They're called “Eco Tanks” and they dramatically reduce a printer's running costs.

When we hear about wetlands such as swamps and bogs, we are often reminded of unpleasant experiences:
we get swamped with homework and bogged down in math problems.
This makes it hard to realize the importance of wetlands.
Wetlands are important to many kinds of animals and plants that live there.
Some birds nest in wetlands and others use them for rest stops during flights.
Wetlands are important to people, too.
People visit wetlands to fish, take pictures and just listen to the sounds and enjoy being outdoors.
Wetlands also help us in other ways.
They control flooding by soaking up water like a sponge and then letting it out later on.

Tired of talking to my son about emptying his pockets before washday,
I told him that all the money I found would not be returned.
Instead, I'd put a jar in the laundry room, and when enough money had accumulated, he would have to take me out for dinner.
The next washday, I handed him a laundry basket and asked him to gather up his clothes.
I peeked in and was pleased to see him empty his pockets.
But just as he was about to toss his dirty jeans in the basket, he paused, pulled out his wallet,
and put a handful of change and a dollar bill into the pocket of the jeans.

But what I really worry about is that the new language used by the youth on the Internet is becoming even more common than proper Korean.
The strange language has already made its way into the children’s diaries and homework.
When they become grown-ups, two different languages might be used in Korea.
They might think Korean used by older generations is an alien language.
It’s really scary just imagining it.

You have probably heard of fingerprints, but do you know about noseprints?
These are not for people.
These are for cows.
Farmers use these to aid them in knowing if a cow belongs to them.
Farmers also use these to stop people who steal cattle.
A cow’s nose has lines and circles on it just as a person’s fingers do.
No two cows have these wholly alike.
These vary from cow to cow.
That is why these can help farmers know if a cow belongs to their herd.

You probably can recognize this situation
because it is just one of many examples where men and women quarrel.
This problem is not just Tom and Mary’s but is present in almost every relationship.
Solving this problem for Tom and Mary depends not on how much they loved each other
but on how much they understood the opposite sex.
Without knowing that women really do need to talk about problems to feel better,
Tom would continue to think Mary talked too much and resist listening to her.
Without knowing that Tom was reading the news to feel better, Mary would feel ignored and neglected.
She would persist in trying to get him to talk when he didn’t want to.
These two differences can be resolved by first understanding in greater detail how men and women cope with stress.

When Angela moved to our small town, everything started to change.
At the time, some members of the town's swimming club, including myself, were preparing for the National Championships,
which were just six months away.
I had always been the best, and everyone thought that I would be chosen for the relay race.
But now I had the new competition.
There was only one place for the butterfly on the relay team, and we both wanted it.
For two weeks it was awful.
Angela was always the star.
She was faster than I, and her form was better, too.
My chances of being selected were disappearing fast.
My fear caused me to be unfriendly to Angela.
I refused to speak to her and never said anything good about her.
Angela

Children who appear intelligent and have normal sight and hearing may nevertheless have learning disabilities
such as difficulty in reading; difficulty in writing; difficulty with numbers;
and auditory-memory problems that prevent the child from remembering what has just been said.
Considered an “invisible” handicap, such learning disabilities can be detected by alert parents before the child goes to school.
If the child at about thirty months is not developing normal language skills, something is wrong.
Kindergartners should recognize the ABCs.
First-graders may commonly reverse their letters, writing a d for a b, but if they are still doing this at the start of second grade,
they should be tested for learning disabilities.
Proper and early treatment is essential.

Today my teen-age son, my mother-in-law and I were seated in a restaurant enjoying our noon meal.
We heard a beautiful resonant voice reading aloud in the booth next to ours.
We smiled and decided that some young student was practicing for a college play.
When the reader got up to leave, he had to pass our table.
With much patience and kindness, he led an elderly lady who was blind ― and obviously delighted with his oratory.
She was using a walker which he held as he struggled to help her into her coat.
We watched as he escorted the smiling woman out like a knight with his lady.
My mother-in-law broke our reverie by saying, "We have just seen a son who loves his mother."

What a lesson for all of us about how to treat others, especially those who require extra patience and care.

Indeed, the latest research shows that laughter may have numerous benefits.
Laughter provides excellent exercise, may strengthen the immune system, muffle pain, lighten stress and improve circulation and breathing.
In theory, laughter could even prevent heart attacks and combat cancer.
You would never think that, in laughing, you are actually perpetuating an act of health.
Just think about the last time you laughed really hard ― a real fall-on-floor special. Remember?
Oh, you were some spectacle.
Your mouth twisted open.
With so much blood engorging the veins of your head and neck, your face turned red.

You doubled over, gasping, wheezing like some haywire accordion symphony.
Your stomach, chest and ribs ached.
Rendered speechless, you dribbled your vodka-and-tonic without shame.
Sounds like fun, yes?
A real life-extender, no?
Well, believe it or not, this mirth experience ― this volcanic physical event, this seizure, really ― was quite good for you.

I'm taking this opportunity to say something about tests and X-rays taken at clinics and hospitals.

The global information market will be huge and will combine all the various ways human goods, services, and ideas are exchanged.
On a practical level, this will give you broader choices about most things, including how you earn and invest, what you buy and how much you pay for it, who your friends are and how you spend your time with them, and where and how securely you and your family live.
Your workplace and your idea of what it means to be "educated" will be transformed, perhaps almost beyond recognition.
Your sense of identity, of who you are and where you belong, may open up considerably.
In short, just about everything will be done differently.

She had just begun an intense, love-at-first-sight relationship, only to have her lover go off to Europe three weeks later.
For seven tortured weeks she was plagued with doubts.
What if he decided he didn't love her after all?
What if he met someone else during his trip?
What if he didn't call her as soon as he returned?
Full of all these what-ifs, my friend's brain was about to short-circuit, until a wise friend of hers put things in perspective.
"Why worry? Whatever he does, he does.
Remember: You don't know until you know."
My friend stood there, awestruck by the brilliant simplicity of this observation.
There was really nothing she could do about the situation, after all.
And worrying about something before it actually happened suddenly came into focus as the waste of time and energy that it is.
In an instant, it seemed, she was free of the problem, able to settle back and take each day at a time until her lover returned, at which point things progressed just as beautifully as she could have hoped and her fears turned out to be groundless after all.

Eva felt very sorry for her next-door neighbor, Elaine.

Now Elaine was quite ill, so Eva made a point of spending the days with her friend, tending to her needs and helping to nurse her back to health.

"We say that the universe is expanding."
"What makes it do that?"
"Most astronomers agree that the expanding universe can only have one explanation: Once upon a time, about 15 billion years ago, all substance in the universe was assembled in a relatively small area.
The substance was so dense that gravity made it terrifically hot.
Finally it got so hot and so tightly packed that it exploded.
We call this explosion the Big Bang."
"Just the thought of it makes me shudder."
"The Big Bang caused all the substance in the universe to be expelled in all directions, and as it gradually cooled, it formed stars and galaxies and moons and planets..."
"But I thought you said the universe was still expanding?"
"Yes I did, and it's expanding precisely because of this explosion billions of years ago.
The universe has no timeless geography.
The universe is a happening.
The universe is an explosion.
Galaxies continue to fly through the universe away from each other at colossal speeds."
"Will they go on doing that for ever?"
"That's one possibility.
But there is another.
You may recall that Alberto told Sophie about the two forces that cause the planets to remain in constant orbit round the sun?"
"Weren't they gravity and inertia?
"Right, and the same thing applies to the galaxies.
Because even though the universe continues to expand, the force of gravity is working the other way.
And one day, in a couple of billion years, gravity will perhaps cause the heavenly bodies to be packed together again as the force of the huge explosion begins to weaken.
Then we would get a reverse explosion, a so-called implosion.
But the distances are so great that it will happen like a movie that is run in slow motion.
You might compare it with what happens when you release the air from a balloon."
"Will all the galaxies be drawn together in a tight nucleus again?"
"Yes, you've got it.
But what will happen then?"
"There would be another Big Bang and the universe would start expanding again.
Because the same natural laws are in operation.
And so new stars and galaxies will form."

he truck driver stopped at a roadside diner. His waitress brought him a

the other one took his pie. The truck driver didn't say a word. He got up,
put on his jacket, paid the cashier and left.
One of the bikers said to the cashier, "Not much of a man, is he?"
"He's not much of a driver either," she replied. "He just ran his truck
over three motorcycles."
