The company had a prize for the child whose behavior was the worst in the world.

One day, a poor man named Scott, came to visit Taylor.
He said, “Taylor, I need your help. I am a poor man, a man with no money.”
Taylor looked at him kindly and answered, “I'll help you. Tell me what's wrong.”
Scott said, “Yesterday I stopped in front of the door of a restaurant.
The restaurant belonged to a rich man.
I only smelled the food.
However, he wanted me to pay him for the food.
And he called the judge.
The judge said I must go to the court today.
Please Taylor, can you help me?”
In the court the rich man began shouting angrily at Scott.
And the judge asked Scott to pay him right now.
Taylor stepped forward and then said, “This poor man is my elder brother. I will pay you instead.”
After he heard this, the rich man smiled, thinking about his payment.
Then Taylor took a bag of money from his belt, a bag of copper coins.
He bent down next to the rich man and shook the bag.
“Listen. Do you hear this sound?” said he.
“Of course I hear it,” shouted the rich man impatiently.
“Well, then,” answered Taylor, “the problem is solved. The debt is paid.
My brother has smelled your food, and you have heard his money.”
The poor man was saved.
Taylor

During his years as mayor of New York City, Guardia sometimes presided as judge in a night court.
In one case, a man was found guilty of stealing a loaf of bread.
He claimed that he had committed that theft to feed his starving family.
“The law is the law,” La Guardia declared.
“I must therefore fine you $10.”
When the man sadly confessed that he had no money, the judge took $10 out of his wallet and paid the fine.
He also asked each person in the courtroom to contribute 50 cents to help the man.
There and then, they accepted his request.
Finally, the law-breaker was set free and even blessed with an undeserved gift.

The room was so silent that one could have heard a pin drop.
Kerry watched as the verdict was passed over to the judge.
He opened the envelope.
At the sound of paper tearing, her heart was thumping.
The judge cleared his throat, and drew in a breath of air.
“After hearing from both sides in this court, and listening to all the events throughout the past five years,
the court has decided to rule in favor of Mr. Paul Martin,” the judge announced.
Kerry felt the ground fall from beneath her.
She was speechless.
Now all was lost.

Paul Martin
Kerry

Learning a language is not a matter of acquiring a set of rules and building up a large vocabulary.
The teacher’s roles should not be directed at informing his students about a language, but at enabling them to use it.
The drills and exercises a student does have one end in sight: to enable him to become a skilled performer.
The student’s command of a language will therefore be judged not by how much he knows but by how well he can perform in public.

At a trial in Detroit's Recorder's Count, a young woman who had accused the
defendant of making an improper proposal was asked to state the question that
allegedly had been asked. It embarrassed her to repeat it, so she was permitted to
write it on a piece of paper. After the judge, prosecutor and defense counsel had
read it, it was passed to the jury. Each juror read it, and gave it to the next juror.
After an attractive female juror had read it, she attempted to pass it to the man on
her right, but found him dozing. Without comment, she nudged him and gave him
the slip of paper. The awakened juror read the note, smiled at her, nodded and put
the note in his pocket!
* recorder: a judge who has the same criminal jurisdiction as a police judge

To a certain extent, doubt is good for the mind. People who doubt are not in danger
of being ruled by emotion. But a man who completely lacks any positive beliefs is often
a useless man, and a life without a belief in something positive is unbearable. Instead
of doubting everything, we should be ready to believe when there is sufficient evidence,
and we should try not judge a case while evidence is lacking. In other words, our mental
attitudes should be "critical" but not "negative".

A reader must be careful, however, in judging a man from his writings:
the attitudes and values of the hero of a novel do not necessarily
reflect those of the author.

I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience.
I know of no way of judging the future but by the past.

We have no way to judge the future except by the past. Our vision into the future
is dim but we have some light from the lamp of experience.

A research study revealed that the white-collar worker was extremely concerned
about the impression his clothing made on his superiors. Although blue-collar
workers were less aware that they might be judged by their clothing, they recognized
that any deviation from the accepted pattern of dress would draw ridicule from their
fellow workers.

Employers will use this agreement as a test in dealing with future wage claims.

The judge conducted four trials in one day.

The word justice is usually associated with courts of law. We might say
that justice has been done when a man's innocence or guilt has been
proved beyond doubt. Justice is part of the complex machinery of the law.
Those who seek it, undertake an arduous journey and can never be sure
that they will find it. Judges, however wise or eminent, are human and
can sometimes make mistakes.

*rebuke 꾸짖다 speak to (someone) severely:
The judge rebuked the police for their treatment of the prisoner.

If he himself rose out of poverty, and filled a great position before he
died at the age of forty-three, this was not, I fancy, due to that
ambition to which most poor boys who afterwards achieve eminence owe
their success. He was, so far as I could judge, as free from ambition
in the ordinary sense of the word as any man who ever lived. If he rose
from position to position, it was not because he thrust himself on the
attention of his employers, but because his employers insisted on promoting
him. He was naturally a man of creative energy, a man who lived by his
imagination, and could no more help being conspicuous among ordinary human
beings than a gold coin in a plate of silver.

You should not judge people only by their outlooks.

To keep a pleasant environment, employers cannot allow certain kinds of
behaviors such as arriving late or bothering others. These behaviors may
weaken the group work environment and decrease productivity. So employers
always consider teamwork when they judge a worker's performance. They
look for employees who support each other, take pride in their work, and
encourage a pleasant working environment. Respect, good manners, and
thoughtful behaviors are keys to successful teamwork. In fact, working
well with others is one of the most important job skills.

What makes an act excellent (virtuous)?
Aristotle admitted that this is a difficult question, which cannot be answered by any exact rule.
Excellence is more than a matter of knowledge or science; it is an art that each individual must develop through practice.
He advised that, in general, excellence in a particular faculty lies somewhere between extremes.
In battle, a warrior should exhibit neither a deficiency of nerve (cowardice) nor an excess (foolhardiness).
Rather, he should strike a happy medium (courage).
A work of sculpture or architecture should be judged by asking whether it might be improved, either by taking something away or by adding something to it.
If it cannot, the work is "just right"―excellent.

Firstly, they had to, or wanted to, imitate the colonizer by adopting the latter's habits and ways of thinking.
Their imitation resulted, not just in the simple reproduction of those traits, but in a sense of inferiority.
Secondly, colonized people have double standards for judging people: one for their fellows, and another for their colonizers.
This self-division is a direct result of imposed colonialism.
These contradictory factors constituted the structure of feelings and attitudes of the colonized people for the following generations, even after independence has been achieved.

The statements of the prosecutor's witnesses were so vague that the
judge felt compelled to acquit the accused.

Police stopped a driver who had not reported an accident. The man said
he had no knowledge about backing his car into another car, which was
not moving, and setting off the burglar alarm. ‘I am a music lover. I
was listening to a Mozart concerto on the car radio. I thought the alarm
was simply a badly played note.’ Fortunately, the judge was a music
lover too. He let the driver go.

couldn't put Humpty Dumpty back together again.
Have we hit a wall yet?
No. This was male, judging by the pelvic bone.

Guy named McCall shot and killed his neighbor over a motorcycle,
and the D.A. can't make heads or tails of the evidence for the prelimary hearing.
Where is this McCall now, is he being held?
He ran from the arresting officer. So the Judge refused him bail.
And why isn't the case CSI dealing with this?
Franovich, from Days?
He quit yesterday.
Burn out.

I know the law.
He doesn't have to do anything unless the judge says to.
That's why we're asking Tony to volunteer.
With your permission
Chill, Mom.
I got nothing to hide.
It's no big thing.

Wait a minute... Hastings was facing McCall,
and McCall shot him in the back?
You can't have it both ways, guys. The judge'll laugh me out of court.

My babysitter joined the witness relocation program.
I haven't slept through the night in six years,
and for you to stand there and judge me...

I mean, they've always been wound a little tight, but I've never seen them like that.
Then again, who am I to judge?
You mean people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw soda cans?
Okay, you have got to know that I only get that angry around Karl.
He just treated me so badly at the end.
I haven't been able to get past it.

We both know that your career was going so much better than mine before we had kids.
You never let me forget that.
That is not fair.
You're always competing with me,
and judging by tonight, you know what? You still are.
Tom, I am sorry about tonight, truly,
but these days, if I'm competing with anyone, it's the Bree Van De Kamps of the world,
with their spotless kitchens and their perfect kids who throw fabulous parties where nothing ever goes wrong.
I try so hard to keep up, but I can't.

Okay, you're the only person that I've been with in a long time.
I mean, not unusually long or anything, you know?
Just a normal amount of long time.
But it wouldn't matter to me if you've been with someone else.
Maybe you have?
I'm not accusing you of anything or, you know, judging you
or handing out scarlet letters or anything, you know?

Before you judge me, I know there was a train accident.
People are very badly hurt.

Mrs. Russell, I'm sorry if i've done something to offend you.
The only thing that will offend me
is if you pretend that you haven't been judging me
since the minute we met.
We're gonna be spending a lot of time together,
so we may as well be honest, right?
