→ 민주주의 국가에서는: in a democracy

→ 많은 공통점을 갖다: have a great deal in common

ANS) Human beings all have a great deal in common. Even the greats of history differ from us not in essence but in degree. The human problems that repeat themselves in life repeat themselves in literature, but with different solutions according to different authors who wrote at different times. The writer's task is to give us a faithful picture of life.

(ANS) A computer can do all its tasks accurately and at speeds that are thousands times faster than the human eye, hand and mind. Nowadays banks can process as many as ten billion checks a year by using an electric data processing system. A computer can confirm airline reservations in seconds. It can correct the course of a spacecraft in flight. Even small computers can add a column of 20,000 five-digit numbers in less than a second. With the help of such computers, scientists now so perform tasks that once took so long that they were practically impossible.

→ 1% 상승한 데 불과하다: rose by only one percent a year
(ANS) Despite an overall slowdown in world population growth, the populations of many developing countries are continuing to grow at high rate. Between 1980 and 1982 the economies of the developing countries grew at only 1.9 percent a year, largely because of the economic recession and the cutback in international aid. At the same time their populations grew at 2.02 percent. But per capita income in the poorest nations rose by only about one percent a year between 1960 and 1981. At present per capita income of the richest country is 220 times the per capita income of the poorest country. The gap between the developing and developed countries will widen still further.

→ 빈틈없이 감독하다: have vigilant supervisory power; exercise strict supervision
→ 판단하다: make decisions
→ 개입하다: get involved
→ 전체를 지휘하다: direct the work as a whole; command the whole work
(ANS) A leader today must have a thorough knowledge of his own job in every possible field and have vigilant supervisory power. His job is to make decisions and have others fulfill them, not to execute them himself. This is because he may probably become unable to command the whole work if he gets personally involved in any specific aspect of it.

Even within the ruling New Korea Party, voices have been raised in
opposition to the revision, with some senior party staffers having
determined it to ``unreasonably favor the rich.'' A 1 billion won tax

inheritance of up to 3 billion won worth of property.

In ancient times, people sacrificed animals, and even human beings, to appease the gods.

In times of prosperity money circulates quickly, but during a depression it circulates slowly.

Psychologists tell us that people who seem to be unusually impassive are often the ones most likely to lose emotional control of themselves in times of stress.

The tough leadership we need in these troubled times will not come from uncertain and innocuous personalities.

There are times in life when you should be guided more by your feelings, without trying to be strictly logical about everything.

Most people act superstitiously from time to time.
Many persons may joke about keeping away from bad luck by not walking under a ladder or avoiding the number 13.
But they have such beliefs anyway.
Scholars once believed that all superstitions dated back to man's early history.
But many superstitions have appeared in relatively recent times.

Many superstitions concern black cats.
In ancient times, people believed that witches turned themselves into black cats.
So the animals are considered to be evil.
However, some cats were thought to bring good luck, especially to men who worked at sea.
That is why cats were often kept on ships to bring the voyage good luck.

On the average, babies born in the spring are taller and heavier than those born at other times of the year.
In spring, growing children gain most rapidly in height.
The increase is almost twice that of a similar period in fall.
The very chemical composition of our blood changes slightly in the spring;
we sense the coming of the season in our life stream.

Nothing in the history of science can compare with a black hole.
Thought to exist far, far out if space, black holes are said to be small sphere-shaped areas where gravity is so strong that not even light can escape.
This, of course, makes them invisible and is the reason they are referred to as “black.”
They're called “holes” because, as far as we know, they seem to be bottomless pits which can suck in everything from tiny dust particles to stars many times larger than our sun, all of which disappear without a trace.

In ancient times, women in Greece were not allowed to take part in the Olympic Games.
Women were first invited to participate in the modern Olympics in 1912.
Since then, women's events have become very important and popular.
People look forward to watching women's gymnastics in particular.
Girls and boys all around the world today admire women athletes in the Olympics.

You'll find the unknown word comes again, perhaps several times, and by the end of the chapter you'll have guessed its meaning.
That's how we learn the meaning of words in our own language, isn't it?
When I'm telling a story to children, they seldom stop to ask what a word means.
Even when they read, they don't run for the dictionary every time they see an unknown word.
When I read my New York Times these days I often find articles about space programs.
There are sometimes words I don't know ―and some of them are so new that they're not yet in the dictionaries.
But I'm slowly beginning to understand what some of the words mean ― simply by meeting them so often.

Writing is one of the greatest inventions in human history.
It helps us to store large amounts of knowledge and to hand them down to future generations in a clear and organized form.
Without it we would know very little about how our ancestors lived.
We would be completely shut off from the great people of the past.
In modern times some means of recording sounds and carrying speech a long way have been invented.
Take, for example, the tape recorder and the telephone.
As a result, it may now be regarded as much less important than before.

Our personal distance allows us to stay protected and untouched by others.
In personal distance, we can touch each other by extending our arms.
At this distance we can see many of the fine details of an individual―the gray hairs, tooth stain, the shape of eyebrows, and so on.
However, it is hard to detect body heat.
At times we may detect the smell of one's breath,
but generally at this distance etiquette demands that we direct our breath to some neutral corner so as not to offend.

Author Joseph Conrad wrote, “In work is the chance to find yourself.”
If you think of work as punishment you'll never achieve your goal.
Working hard does have its weaknesses, its difficult and painful moments.
There'll be times when you'll want to give up the whole thing.
But for every weakness, there's benefit.
Hard work is the way to the end of the rainbow.

How can young people without power and resources help to solve social problems?
Youngsters learn by digging in and finding out what the issues are all about.
And by being informed, they can influence adults through direct action.
In fact, given an opportunity, young people many times have brought their thinking about significant issues to the attention of public officials.
Thanks to the actions of young people, historical sites have been saved, and several kinds of endangered plants and animals have been preserved.

Traditional fairy tales show heroines who are usually beautiful and passive and spend a lot of their time indoors cooking and cleaning.
Many authors today, however, are creating fairy stories in which the heroines are more active.
For example, in Cinder Edna, a modern version of Cinderella by Ellen B. Jackson, the heroine wears comfortable shoes and takes the bus to the party.
In Sleepless Beauty by Frances Minters, Beauty, instead of falling asleep, fools the wicked witch by setting an alarm clock.
In other stories set in modern times, more and more strong, clever female characters are appearing.

We are all very glad that the new train line has opened to take people to Euro-Disney.
However, I must report that the trains are very crowded and uncomfortable.
This is especially true at the busiest times when many people are trying to get to work.
In order to attract more visitors to the park, we must put more trains in service during peak hours.
There are also many tourists who do not speak French; therefore, we need train employees who speak English and other languages.
If we do this, I'm sure more visitors will come to Euro-Disney in comfort and safety.

Yesterday Gary Roberts, age 60, entered a bank at 4:59 p.m., just one minute before the closing time.
Roberts told a bank employee, “I want to deposit five thousand dollars―all in pennies.”
He pointed to several heavy bags next to him.
The employee said it was too late to help him.
But Gary Roberts refused to leave the bank and the police were called.
This was not the first time he made trouble with the bank.
One day last year, he came into the bank ten times.
Each time he took out one dollar from his account.
Nobody knows why he does these things.

The people of Kiribati are afraid that one day in the not-too-distant future, their country will disappear from the face of the earth.
Several times this year, the Pacific island nation has been flooded by a sudden high tide.
These tides, which swept across the island and destroyed houses, came when there was neither wind nor rain.
What is causing these mysterious high tides?
The answer may well be global warming.
When fuels like oil and coal are being burned, pollutants are released;
these pollutants trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere.
Warmer temperatures cause water to expand and also create more water by melting glaciers and polar ice caps.

What would my life be like if my children didn't play sports? Well, it may be more relaxed on one hand.
However, like other parents, I can see the immense benefits sports provide our children!
Organized sports offer children of all ages the chance to exercise, to be part of a team, and to form relationships they may not otherwise have.
Working out not only helps to lessen depression, it also helps teenagers overcome the uneasiness they may feel at times as they develop and change.
And being on a sports team can be helpful and stabilizing at a time when so many things in their lives seem devastating.
And sharing in both its accomplishments and failures is a wonderful experience.

Honey has been used since very ancient times because it was the only way early man could get sugar.
It was used by the ancients to make a medical beverage called “mead,” a mixture of honey with wine and other alcoholic drinks.

The history of fan dates back to the ancient times in Korea.
Murals from ancient tombs show that the ones made of feathers were in use even before the 4th century.
At first, it was just a device to cool with.
But other uses were added as bamboo and paper came into use.
For example, people covered their faces with it to avoid strong sunlight or to hide from their creditors,
and sometimes they even flapped off flies with it.
This device was also used in an artistic way by ancient scholars.
They wrote a poem or painted a picture on it.
In itself, it is just an appliance.
However, a brush stroke on its white canvas creates a transformation and makes it a work of art.

I was working as a short-order cook at two restaurants in the same neighborhood.
On a Saturday night, I was finishing up the dinner shift at one restaurant and hurrying to report to work at the second place.
But I was delayed because one table kept sending back an order of hash browns, insisting they were too cold.
I replaced them several times, but still the customers were dissatisfied.
When I was able to leave, I raced out the door and arrived at my second job.
A server immediately handed me my first order.
“Make sure these hash browns are hot,” she said,
“because these people just left a restaurant down the street that kept serving them cold ones."

A movie set is the area where a motion picture is filmed.
Most sets are built inside movie studios.
These sets are built in large, windowless buildings, called “sound stages.”
Here, both the picture and the dialogue are recorded.
Indoor sets on sound stages are convenient because all the necessary cameras, sound equipment, and wiring can be permanently installed.
At other times, however, a movie set is built “on location,” which means o

It was a very hot day in the middle of summer, and there were no trees along the street.
Mr. Read closed his shop at half past five, and went out into the street and began walking to the bus stop.
He was very fat.
The sun shone straight down the street, and in a few minutes Mr. Read felt very hot.
A little girl came out of another shop.
The girl stayed very near him all the time, and she kicked Mr. Read's shoes several times.
Mr. Read looked at her angrily each time.
After the fourth time, Mr. Read stopped, turned round and said to the little girl,
“What are you doing? Stop following me like that!”
“I'm sorry, but don't stop me, please!” the little girl said.
“It's very hot today, and there isn't any shade anywhere else in the street!”

They are sure to have a son because they bore only daughters five times.

If you throw a dice once more, the probability of getting number 2 will be lower than one sixth.
Do you believe this?

Prayer For Bad Times
Dear God: Help me be a good sport in this game of life.
I don't ask for an easy place in the lineup.
Put me anywhere you need me.
I only ask that I can give you 100 percent of everything I have.
If all the hard drives seem to come my way, I thank you for the compliment.
Help me remember that you never send a player more trouble than he can handle.
-
And, help me, Lord, to accept the bad breaks as part of the game.
May I always play on the square, no matter what the others do.
Help me study the Book so I'll know the rules.
-
Finally, God, if the natural turn of events goes against me and I'm benched for sickness or old age, help me to accept that as part of the game, too.
Keep me from whimpering that I was framed or that I got a raw deal.
And when I finish the final inning, I ask for no laurels.
All I want is to believe in my heart that I played as well as I could and that didn't let you down.

Those who are at the mercy of impulse―who lack self-control―suffer a moral deficiency:
The ability to control impulse is the base of will and character.
By the same token, the root of altruism lies in empathy, the ability to read emotions in others; lacking a sense of another's need or despair, there is no caring.
And if there are any two moral stances that our times call for, they are precisely these, self-restraint and compassion.

The amount of work involved, however, does not necessarily determine the level of stress.
Air traffic controllers, for instance, report that the long stretches of doing relatively little are at least as stressful as the times when they are handling many aircraft in the sky.

The number of residents whose native language is not English has risen 34% in the last ten years to approximately 32 million, according to a recent Census Bureau report.

According to the Census Bureau report, there are 329 different languages spoken in U.S. homes.
The most common language other than English is Spanish.
More than half of all the residents who speak a language other than English, speak Spanish.
That is ten times as many as speak French, the second most common language, used by 5.3% of those who don't use English at home.

"There are the expected, maturational crises we experience at times of life development and change.

Society is commonly too cheap.
We meet at very short intervals, not having had time to acquire any new value for each other.
We meet at meals three times a day, and give each other a new taste of that old musty cheese that we are.
We have had to agree on a certain set of rules, called etiquette and politeness, to make this frequent meeting tolerable and that we need not come to open war.
We meet at the post office, and at the sociable, and about the fireside every night; we live thick and are in each other's way, and stumble over one another, and I think that we thus lose some respect for one another.
Certainly less frequency would suffice for all important and hearty communications.

How many times have you made a mad dash across your yard, your house, or your workplace to catch the telephone?
Who owns that telephone?
Maybe in the workplace that mad dash is necessary, but at home the telephone belongs to you.
If you don't want to answer it, let it ring.
The world won't come to an end.
If the call is really that urgent, the other person will call back.
You own your telephone.
It does not own you.

The social experiences and values of the old and the young have always been in conflict; if younger people did not question the advice and beliefs of their parents, little change or 'progress' would ever occur.
But with the accelerating speed of change in modern times, the conflicts between members of different generations, or between those people anxious to adjust to change and those less inclined to do so, were in danger of becoming more harmful than helpful.
Furthermore, the very phrase by which these conflicts are described, the 'generation gap', was becoming out of date.

In ancient times, people believed that evil spirits could do harm to infants.
They also believed that these evil spirits were allergic to certain colors, especially blue.
Since blue was the color of the Heaven sky, it was the color that was supposed to make evil spirits powerless and drive them away.

Koreans have arrived in the "capital of the world," hoping to alter life's fate.
According to a New York Times article recently, the Koreans are the city's most "visible immigrants" because of their remarkable emergence in small businesses.
최근 N.Y.
But in the process of adjusting themselves to the complexities and rude aspects of New York life of opposing cultures they cannot escape tasting the bitter with the sweet.

Alcoholism is a disease characterized by repeated excessive drinking that interferes with an individual's health and work behavior.
Probably no one factor can cause alcoholism, which is a complex entity.
In terms of costs to society and lost productivity, alcoholism is an expensive disease.
The suicide rate among alcoholics is 58 times that of the general public.
The cost in terms of workdays lost and talent wasted is estimated at over $10 billion annually.

We have found that when an individual walks up to another person and engages in a conversation, which happens billions of times each day in the world, one of two things can happen.

In yesterday's edition of The New York Times, there was a tragicomical piece of news that a very fat woman, whose sole wish was to lose weight, dieted herself to death.

Even if you are home, your doors should be locked at all times, including
those in your garage.

I did know Nehru at all intimately; in fact, I did not even meet him many times. But
his personality made an immediate impression at one's first meeting with him, and this
impression did not change over the years. Nor was the effect he made just an impression
;the word is weak and too cold. "Captivation" comes nearer to the truth. Here was a human
being who could win one's heart and keep it.

In times of trouble, it has been Harlow's observation, there are no absolutely
correct answers to problems, only approximate ones.

"The minor evidence as to whether he was an alcoholic is, by comparison, petty."
Biographer Mary Renault, who has written several books about Alexander, weighed
in with a stout letter defending the hero's image that was printed in The Times
of London -and prominently featured in Athen's mass-circulation press.

Many states had record damage-the 2.5 million acres defoliated in New York
was five times the previous high-and this year seems to be even worse.

Entomologists in Massachusetts have counted enough egg masses

While recuperating from surgery, my neighbor became cantankerous and refused
to follow the doctor's orders to take a ten minute walk three a day. His wife
coaxed and cajoled, then nagged. Nothing moved him.
In desperation, she lit upon a solution. Three times a day she turned on every
light in the house. Her husband cringed at the waste, and it took him ten minutes
three times a day to walk around and turn the lights off.

Jackson went to a psychiatrist. "Doc," he said, "I've got trouble. Every
time I get into bed I think there's somebody under it. I get under the
bed, I think there's somebody on top of it. Top, under, top, under.
I'm going crazy!"
"Just put yourself in my hands for two years," said the shrink. "Come to
me three times a week, and I'll cure you."
"How much do you charge?"
"A hundred dollars per visit."
"I'll think about it."
Jackson never went back. Six months later he met the doctor on the street.
"Why didn't you ever come to see me again?" asked the psychiatrist.
"For a hundred bucks a visit? A bartender cured me for ten dollars."
"Is that so! How?"
"He told me to cut the legs off the bed."

When you hear that so-and-so has said something horrid about you, you
remember the ninety-nine times when you have refrained from uttering the
most just and well-deserved criticism of him, and forget the hundredth
time when in an unguarded moment you have declared what you believe to
be the truth about him. Is this the reward, you feel, for all your long
forbearance? Yet from his point of view your conduct appears exactly
what his appears to you; he never knows of the times when you have not
spoken, he knows only of the hundredth time when you did speak.

There are rare instances when justice almost ceases to be an abstract
conception. Reward or punishment are meted out quite independent of
human interference. At such times, justice acts like a living force.
When we use a phrase like 'it serves him right', we are, in part,
admitting that a certain set of circumstances has enabled justice to
act of its own accord.

That all men are equal is an assertion to which, at ordinary times, no
sane human being has ever given his assent. A man who has to undergo a
dangerous operation does not act on the supposition that one doctor is
just as good as another.
And when they require Civil Servants, even the most democratic governments
make a careful selection among their theoretically equal subjects.
At ordinary times, we are perfectly certain that men are not equal.
But when, in a democratic country, we think or act politically we are
no less certain that men are equal. Or at any rate―which comes to the
same thing in practice―we behave as though we were certain of men's
equality.

The uncertain economic conditions of recent years have caused union and
management representatives to explore many ways of handling labor problems.
Workers have always wanted to share in the profits when the company has
good times.
Now management representatives are saying, "Fine. We'll share the profits
with you―if you'll share the losses with us."
Workers are having to decide whether they are willing to take the chance
of salary and benefit cuts in bad times. They are having to decide whether
job security is more important than other benefits.
In effect, they are having to decide whether they are willing and able to
pay the cost of sharing.

As a product demonstrator, my mother had to promote a diet beverage in
a supermarket. During the first two days she was indisposed, so she asked
her sister to substitute for her. Back on the job the third day, she
noticed two salesgirls walking past several times.
They looked at her, then shook their heads skeptically. Finally my mother
asked them what they found so odd. "This must be a real miracle drink
you're offering," they replied. "Amazing, how much weight you've lost
in only two days!"
My mother and her sister look very much alike, but my aunt is about
30 pounds heavier.

It is common in our day, as it has been in many other periods of the
world's history, to suppose that those among us who are wise have seen
through all the enthusiasms of earlier times and have become aware
that there is nothing left to live for.
The men who hold this view are genuinely unhappy, but they are proud of
their unhappiness, which they attribute to the nature of the universe
and consider to be the only rational attitude for an enlightened man.

The technique of writing is no less difficult than that of the other arts
and yet, because he can read and write a letter, there is a notion that
anyone can write well enough to write a book.
Writing seems now the favorite relaxation of the human race.
Whole families will take to it as in happier times they entered religious
houses.
Women will write novels to while away their pregnancies; bored noblemen,
axed officers, retired civil servants, fly to the pen as one might fly
to the bottle.
There is an impression abroad that everyone has it in him to write one
book; but if by this is implied a good book the impression is false.

We took a guided tour of Houston's Astrodome on a rainy day. When our group
arrived at the upper balcony, several seats were wet from rain dripping
from the ceiling. Our guide asked if we had any question, and one man said,
"Yes, do you know the roof leaks?"
Without blinking an eye, the girl replied, "The Astrodome does not leak.
At times, certain atmospheric conditions cause the 'glass' in the roof to
shrink, thereby leaving spaces through which water may enter the building.
But the Astrodome does not leak."

Remember that man whom you are talking to is a hundred times as much as
interested in himself and his wants and his problems as he is interested
in you and your problems. His toothache means more to him than a famine
in China. Think of that the next time you start a conversation.

Many observers have commented on what seems to be the fact that fear plays
a much smaller part than we should think it must in the life of an animal
which lives dangerously.
Terror he can know, and perhaps he knows it frequently.
But it seems to last only a little longer than the immediate danger it
helps him to avoid, instead of lingering, as in the human being it does,
until it becomes a burden and a threat.
The frightened bird resumes his song as soon as danger has passed, and
so does the frightened rabbit his games.
It is almost as if he knew that "cowards die many times before their
deaths: the valiant never taste of death but once."

The habit of thinking by means of comparison is a fatal one.
When anything pleasant occurs, it should be enjoyed to the full, without
stopping to think that it is not so pleasant as something else that may
possibly be happening to someone else.
"Yes," says the envious man, "this is a sunny day, and it is springtime,
and the birds are singing, but I understand that the springtime in
Sicily is a thousand times more beautiful."

Women who say they are indifferent to clothes, like men who say they do
not mind what they eat, should be distrusted; there is something wrong.
And men who sneer at women's passionate concern about dress should be
banished to the woods. For my part I delight in women when they go into
a conference-huddle over new clothes.
They seem to me then most themselves and the furthest removed from my sex.
They are at such times completely in their own world.
