→ 제비가 날아오고 진달래와 벚꽃이 피면서 시작된다: …come/begin with the arrival of the swallow and with the blooming of…
→ 진달래: azaleas(s) cf. 개나리: forsythia

ANS) In Korea spring comes with the arrival of the swallows from the south and with the blooming of azaleas and cherry blossoms in late March of early April. Summer in Korea is hot and rainy. The summer usually begins in June. The temperature rises above 20℃(68℉) in most areas of Korea, and especially in July there are many rainy days. Fall is rather short, about two months from the middle of September to November. It is the most pleasant season of the year, because the days are clear and sunny. Winter in Korea can be characterized as cold and dry, though it snows frequently in most parts of the country.

Summer vacations in the mountains or at the beach, or indeed
anywhere outdoors, are to be encouraged because they allow people
ground down by routine life and punishing work schedules to recharge
their batteries and recover from fatigue. Young people in particular,
benefit greatly because getting out and about they experience many new
things and they have the opportunity to enjoy a healthy romanticism in
the bosom of Mother Nature.

Living in cave homes is more comfortable than you might think.
They are naturally cool in summer and warm in winter.
The floors are often covered with tiles or rugs, and the walls are painted.
There are windows and doors.
Many cave homes have telephones, and some even have fax and internet connections.
In Guadix, Spain, you can look out over a hillside that is covered with television antennas from the cave houses that lie beneath the surface.

Because of my job, I was only able to sail during summer vacations,
so the trip around the world had to be broken up into small pieces.
The first section was from New York to Bermuda.
From there, I went to Venezuela, then to the Galapagos Islands and Tahiti.
I wandered all through the South Pacific, stopping for long visits in Fiji.
Occasionally, I would be joined by friends.
But most of the time, my only companions were dolphins and flying fish.
Sometimes a bird would stop by to hitchhike or for a little rest.

In the United States, the arrival of spring is marked for most urban dwellers not by a sudden greenness
―there is little green in Manhattan―but by the opening of the baseball season.
The first ball is thrown by the President and thereafter millions of citizens enjoy the baseball season.
Similarly, the end of summer is distinguished as much by the World Series as by any natural symbol.
Even those who ignore sports cannot help being aware of these large and pleasantly predictable events.
Radio and television carry baseball into every home.
Newspapers are filled with sports news.

In the Middle East, Israeli politicians never have to wear a tie in parliament but in Egypt where it's even hotter in the summer,
a politician wouldn't think of being in parliament without a tie.
No wonder a tie rebellion gets attention.
It happened during an African fashion show in the Netherlands this week.
The Dutch Queen's husband, Prince Claus, who was the host for the event,
suddenly decided and said out loud that his tie was like a snake around his neck.
That night on Dutch television the anchorman and the sportscaster took off their ties in support.

Question : What do you do to keep yourself physically fit?
Tom : When I was in college I used to play sports like baseball and basketball.
But I can't do that now, so I try to play golf every weekend.
I work mostly sitting at my desk in my office, so I like to get outside and get some fresh air.
Sue :When the weather is OK, I go jogging in the early morning almost every day.
It's fun and it makes me feel fresh all day.
In the winter I don't feel safe running in the dark, so I usually jump rope and lift weights before breakfast.
Liz :I have no weight problem, but I'm not as strong as I used to be.
I'm worried about my health, to tell the truth.
Last summer I quit smoking and next month I'm going to buy an exercise machine.
I'm looking forward to that.

Just that morning when she woke up in her own bed she thought, “Another hot, humid, dull day, just like every other day this summer.”
But then she remembered! Today was different.
Her favorite aunt and uncle, Melissa and Sean, had invited her to join them on a backpacking trip.
They picked her up at 8:00 A.M. and drove most of the day to get to the national park.
They just had time to pitch their tents, build the fire, and cook dinner before it got dark.
Emily went into the forest to gather firewood.
Then she helped Melissa make hamburger patties.
She didn't realize how hungry she was until she smelled them cooking.
Everything tasted better.
Emily

If anyone, including the police, decides to drive down High Point Street on any summer night, he will find it too dangerous to pass.
The potholes have been fixed, but the speeding motorbikers are turning the narrow street into a race track as they try to outrun each other.
The bikers are roaring along the High Point Street without any police enforcement.
The police don't seem to have seen any reason to slow down the speeding motorcycles racing through the street.
It seems like a waiting game: either this summer will end without anyone getting injured, or the speeding bikes will cause a fatal accident.
There is a lot of time left in the summer season.
The city police must take immediate action for our safety.

It was a very hot day in the middle of summer, and there were no trees along the street.
Mr. Read closed his shop at half past five, and went out into the street and began walking to the bus stop.
He was very fat.
The sun shone straight down the street, and in a few minutes Mr. Read felt very hot.
A little girl came out of another shop.
The girl stayed very near him all the time, and she kicked Mr. Read's shoes several times.
Mr. Read looked at her angrily each time.
After the fourth time, Mr. Read stopped, turned round and said to the little girl,
“What are you doing? Stop following me like that!”
“I'm sorry, but don't stop me, please!” the little girl said.
“It's very hot today, and there isn't any shade anywhere else in the street!”

Landscaping is a natural and beautiful way to keep your home more comfortable and reduce your energy bills.
Well-placed trees can deliver effective shade and reduce overall energy bills.
It is said that just three trees, properly placed around the house, can save an average household between $100 and $250 in cooling energy costs annually.
During the summer months, the most effective way to keep your home cool is to prevent the heat from building up in the first place.
A primary source of heat buildup is sunlight absorbed by your home's roof, walls, and windows.
Landscaping can also help block and absorb the sun's energy by providing shade.

The pattern of crime has varied very little over a long period of years.
Murder reaches its high during July and August, as do rape and other violent attacks.
Murder, moreover, is more than seasonal: it is a weekend crime.
It is also a nighttime crime: 62 percent of murders are committed between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Unlike the summer high in crimes of bodily harm, burglary has a different cycle.
You are most likely to be robbed between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. on a Saturday night in December, January, or February.
The most uncriminal month of all? May―except for one strange statistic.
More dog bites are reported in this month than in any other month of the year.

He who marvels at the beauty of the world in summer will find equal cause for wonder and admiration in winter.

Wool is one of the oldest kinds of material used for clothing.
We do not know exactly when people started to use wool to make clothing.
However, we do know that people were wearing wool clothes very early in man's history.
People used the wool not only from sheep, but also from other animals.
For example, in the desert they used the wool from camels.
In the mountains of India they used the wool from cashmere goats.
And in mountains of South America, they used the wool from the llama.
All these kinds of wool have one thing in common.
They protect the body from outside changes in temperature.
This way, wool keeps the body cool in summer and warm in winter.

One summer, in almost all store and restaurant windows on the Massachusetts
island of Nantucket, large signs were posted prohibiting the entry of people with bare
feet. There was, however, a noticeable exception. A small shop off the main street
boldly displayed the message "Bare Feet Welcome." The shop : the local sandal maker.

Reading is not only a supplement to experience. Good reading is experience itself.
The author who can write with power and insight and truth can make his perceptions
a part of your awareness of the world around you. Thus the person who deprives himself
of the wisdom and understanding of great writers deprives himself of an invaluable
experience that can be gained in no other way.

Birds are particularly sensitive to weather changes, and rooks especially so. When
they build their nests higher than usual in the trees, it has often been noticed that a
warm, fairly dry summer follows. The same applies when they fly high, and the opposite
is the case if they are seen flying low.

The weather is like the government, always in the wrong.
In summer time we say it is stifling; in winter that it is killing;
in spring and autumn we find fault with it for being neither one thing
nor the other, and wish it would make up its mind.
If it is fine, we say the country is being ruined for want of rain;
if it does rain, we pray for fine weather.
If December passes without snow, we indignantly demand to know what
has become of our good old-fashioned winters, and talk as if we had
been cheated out of something we had bought and paid for; and when
it does snow, our language is a disgrace to a Christian nation.
We shall never be content until each man makes his own weather,
and keeps it to himself.

During the summer in Nova Sotia, moths known locally as "millers" cluster
around outdoor lights. At my cottage one weekend, my friend Theresa and
I were becoming annoyed at the number of insects the kids were letting inside.
When we heard our husbands' footsteps on the porch, Theresa called out
sharply: "Get in quick and close the door! Those darn millers will come
in, and we won't be able to get rid of them."
As she spoke, our husbands entered, followed by four people she had never
met. There was an awkward silence until one of the visitors exclaimed,
"Too late! We're already in."
Theresa was introduced to Bruce Miller, his brother Lee, Bruce's
stepdaughter, Denice, and her fiance, Wayne Miller.

David was a young man who worked in an office in a big city. His hobby
was trout fishing, but he did not often get a chance to practice it.
Then one summer he decided to have a holiday in a beautiful place in
the mountains where there were a lot of streams.
"I ought to be able to have some good fishing there," he said to himself.
The first morning after he arrived, he walked to the nearest stream
with his fishing-rod.
He saw an old man with his rod standing beside the water.
David said to him, "Good morning, sir. Is this a private stream?"
The old man answered that it was not.
David said, "Why don't you fish here with me, sir?"
The old man answered with a smile, "I should like to, but I'm sorry I can't."
David then said, "Well, it won't be a crime if I catch some fish here,
will it?"
"Oh, no," answered the old man, "it won't be a crime, but it will
certainly be a miracle."

Every summer people like to enjoy the sun. Many make a point of getting
to the beach to get a tan. And every summer many return home suffering
from a sunburn. Not too long ago tanning was fashionable and even
promoted by doctors as a healthful activity. But today there is evidence
that regular exposure to the ultraviolet rays of sunlight, especially if
it results in burns, can be harmful to health.

The smiling landscape of last summer is gone. There is neither the smell
of the warm grass nor the scent of flowers and pines. The sun is setting.
The flat land now rolls away to the horizon with the sky pressing down
like a dark blanket. I scan the village, and there is no sign of
movement. The whole village looks deserted. I find myself alone in the
midst of isolation, Only occasional gusts of wind stir broken boughs and
dust, threatening to blow away everything.

I know your eyes in the morning sun

When they all should let us be

Once my mother and grandmother, horrified by a particularly sensational picture on the cover of one of my books, told me to tear it up.
I could not bear to do this, so I hid it under a loose board in my grandmother's summer-house, where it stayed for two or three years, and received many secret and guilty readings it would never have had otherwise: for my father was right on the other point too.

Northern North America is part of a larger circumpolar ecological domain
that continues across the narrow Bering Strait into Siberia and northern
Europe. The overall circumpolar environment in the 1500's was not very
different from the environment of the present. This vast landmass had a
continental climate and was dominated by cold arctic air throughout a
long winter and spring season. Summer temperature ranged from near
freezing to the mid-20's Celsius, while winter temperature were often as
low as 40 degrees below zero Celsius.

Temperatures in the northern lands were below freezing for eight or nine
months of the year. Subsurface soil in the Arctic's tundra remained
permanently frozen. Even when summer temperatures were above freezing
and the top inches of earth became saturated with water, the soil below
remained frozen into a permafrost, as hard as rock. When water flowed
upon the surface of permanently frozen tundra, it made overland travel
extremely difficult.

Summer travel in the boggy lands, or muskeg country, of the Subarctic's
taiga was also slow and arduous. Tracking animals was more difficult
than it was during the winter when the swampy ground was frozen solid
and covered with snow.

The women had primary responsibility for the fields. They had to
excercise considerable skill to produce the desired results, for their
northern location meant fleeting growing seasons. Winter often lingered
; autumn could be ushered in by severe frost. For good measure, during
the spring and summer, drought, heat, hail, grasshoppers, and other
frustrations might await the wary grower.

If you ask most children what their favorite treat is, they will answer
- " Ice cream !". There is nothing like a delicious ice-cream cone on a
hot, summer day. Every year Americans eat more than four billion
ice-cream cones. Did you know that the ice-cream cone was invented by
accident ? St. Louis was having a world's fair in 1904. Ice cream was a
big seller. One person selling ice-cream ran out of dishes and didn't
know what to do. Luckily, a person nearby, who was selling waffles,
suggested rolling a waffle and putting the ice cream inside. It was an
instant success.
St. Louis

but she does have an excellent territory, rich in food and water.

Not all deserts are hot.
Fifty-mile-an-hour winds blowing in from Siberia

From a summer high of 50 degrees centigrade
the temperature in midwinter can drop to minus 40,
making this one of the harshest deserts of all.
Few animals can survive these extreme changes.

Winter is the time for breeding.

In summer the camels can't stray far from waterholes.
But now, with mouthfuls of snow lying everywhere
they can travel widely in search of mates.

And it's coming.
When the summer monsoon blows in
the giant saguaros, one of the biggest of all cacti,
are ready to take full advantage of it.
After a rainstorm the saguaro's long shallow root system sucks up the water
and the pleats on its trunk enable it to expand rapidly.
When full, a saguaro stem can store up to five tonnes of water
and that's enough to see it through many months of drought.

The trunks of these huge plants provide homes for the gila woodpecker.
But birds are not the only animals to benefit from the presence of the cacti.
During four weeks of the summer the saguaros bloom at night to attract visitors.
The pollen and nectar with which these flowers are loaded attract long-nosed and long-tongued bats.
The bats left Mexico a few days earlier to escape the heat of summer
and are on their way north to the southern United States.
To get there, they have to cross the Sonoran desert.
But the desert is so big
that for most of the year they would be unable to cross it.
Now, with the saguaro in bloom, they can refuel on the way.
So the saguaro's success in developing a way to store water
is now crucial to most of the animals that live or even travel through this land.

It must get to grips with it's new ice world

The seek bare rock on which to lay their eggs and they look rather like penguins too.
Unlike Antarctica, the Arctic can be reached by land based predators
which is why little auks have kept the ability to fly.
They use scree slopes to protect their eggs, burrowing up to a meter beneath the rocks.
