A stream in one of our state parks has always been my sitting spot.
I am fascinated when I see the water bubbling over and down the rocks.
The water has shaped the rocks, causing deep indentations in certain places, but other parts are perfectly flat.
The sound of the water running under the bridge always grabs my attention.
On the other side of the bridge is a pond full of fish.
Nearby there is a place where people can go swimming or just sit on the bank and relax in the sand.

Language never stands still.
Every language, until it ceases to be spoken at all, is in a state of continual change.
The English which we speak and write is not the same English that was spoken and written by our grandfathers.
Nor was their English precisely like that of Queen Elizabeth‘s time.
The farther back we go, the less familiar we find ourselves with the speech of our ancestors.
So finally we reach a kind of English that is quite strange to us, as if it were a foreign tongue.

Bad weather, poor road condition, and defects in cars do cause some accidents, but, generally, such circumstances appear to be of minor significance compared with the mental and physical condition of the driver.

Dean Rusk, former secretary of state and now professor of international
law at the University of Georgia in Athens, is constantly called upon to give
interviews, and is accordingly well prepared. One day last spring, arriving
early at the university's studio, where a television show was to be taped, he
took his place on the set and reviewed his notes while the crew completed
preparations. The floor manager announced that they would begin in five minutes.
Rusk produced a compact from his pocket, took out a powder puff and applied it
to his bald head, which would otherwise reflect the TV lights. He then put the
compact away and announced he was ready to begin.

At a trial in Detroit's Recorder's Count, a young woman who had accused the
defendant of making an improper proposal was asked to state the question that
allegedly had been asked. It embarrassed her to repeat it, so she was permitted to
write it on a piece of paper. After the judge, prosecutor and defense counsel had
read it, it was passed to the jury. Each juror read it, and gave it to the next juror.
After an attractive female juror had read it, she attempted to pass it to the man on
her right, but found him dozing. Without comment, she nudged him and gave him
the slip of paper. The awakened juror read the note, smiled at her, nodded and put
the note in his pocket!

My belief is that all music has an expressive power, some more and some
less, but that all music has a certain meaning behind the notes. That
meaning constitutes what the piece is saying, This whole problem can be
stated quite simply by asking, "Is there a meaning to music ? " My
answer to that would be, "Yes." And "Can you state in so many words what
the meaning is? " My answer to that would be, "No." Therein lies the
difficulty.

A person afflicted with loneliness will realize, in the long run, that
only he can find his own cure. No lasting results can be achieved unless
the individual convinces himself that loneliness is just a state of mind.
He should start by telling himself that he is equal to the next man. This
has a tendency to lower the barriers separating him from others.
Loneliness can be uprooted and expelled only when these barriers are
lowered.

Last December a man named Robert Lee Willie, who had been convicted of raping and murdering an eighteen-year-old woman, was executed in the Louisiana state prison.
In a statement issued several minutes before his death, Mr. Willie said: "Killing people is wrong.... It makes no difference whether it's citizens, countries, or governments. Killing is wrong."
Two weeks later in South Carolina, an admitted killer named Joseph Carl Shaw was put to death for murdering two teenagers.
In an appeal to the governor for clemency, Mr. Shaw wrote: "Killing is wrong when I did it. Killing is wrong when you do it. I hope you have the courage and moral strength to stop the killing."

As advocates of traditional Asian medicine see it, the West's narrow scientific approach misses the point of such ancient practices, which attempt to treat the body as a complex whole instead of trying to heal a specific illness.
Traditional medicine doesn't analyze or attack the disease directly but instead it tries to return the body to balance, to its normal state.
The West's quest for precision leads scientists to disassemble complex formulas in the hope of isolating a single compound that could cure one specific disease.
Not only does this go against the grain of Eastern medical philosophy, it can also be dangerous.

When I find myself depressed over present conditions, I can turn myself into a shouting optimist within one hour.
Here is I do it.
I enter my library, close my eyes, and walk to certain shelves containing only books on history.
With my eyes still shut, I reach for a book, not knowing whether I am picking up Prescotto's Conquest of Mexico or Suetonius' Lives of the Twelve Casears.
With my eyes still closed, I open the book at random, I then open my eyes and read for an hour and the more I read, the more sharply I realize that the world has always been in an extreme state of agony, that civilization has always been tottering on the brink.

One doctor in the USA, Dr. Jack Kavorkian, has become well-known for his assisted suicides.
Since euthanasia is against the law in the USA, the doctor has been arrested and tried in court several times.
But every time his home state of Michigan has brought him to court, the jury has acquitted him.
The jury always sided with the doctor, seeing him as providing a service of kindness rather than as committing a crime.
Most people sympathize with a person who wants to end his or her own life.

For some reasons, governments hesitate to make euthanasia legal.
The Netherlands tolerates it, but the only place in the world where active euthanasia is totally legal is one state in Australia.

Over the last 400,000 years the Earth's climate has been unstable, with very significant temperature changes, going from a warm climate to an ice age in as rapidly as a few decades.
These rapid changes suggest that climate may be quite sensitive to internal or external climate forcings and feedbacks.
As can be seen from the blue curve(lower), temperatures have been less variable during the last 10,000 years.
Based on the incomplete evidence available, it is unlikely that global mean temperatures have varied by more than 1°C in a century during this period.
The information presented on this graph indicates a strong correlation between carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere and temperature.
A possible scenario: anthropogenic emissions of GHGs could bring the climate to a state where it reverts to the highly unstable climate of the pre-ice age period.
Rather than a linear evolution, the climate follows a non-linear path with sudden and dramatic surprises when GHG levels reach an as-yet unknown trigger point.

In 1988, UNEP and WMO jointly established the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as concern over climate change became a political issue.
The purpose of the IPCC was to assess the state of knowledge on the various aspects of climate change including science, environmental and socio-economic impacts and response strategies.

As a tool of destruction, the smallpox virus is ideal.
Simply exposing people to the bug in its natural state, without significantly manipulating or processing it, is sufficient to seed an epidemic.
Unlike anthrax, smallpox is highly contagious (just one infected person could cause the virus to radiate from a family to a neighborhood to a city in a matter of months), and smallpox cannot be treated effectively once symptoms begin (30% of those infected will die).
The vaccine is 100% effective, but only in protecting against the disease before exposure.
Although studies show that inoculation can prevent infection if given up to four days after exposure, by the time the first symptoms appear - fever, headache and rash, which begin at least two weeks after exposure - it is too late.

One day a police officer came home with good news: the state DNA lab had caught Debbie Smith's rapist.
Norman Jimmerson, in fact, was already in jail, convicted of kidnapping and robbing two other women around the same time that Smith was attacked.
When his DNA was entered into the state's data bank - something Virginia law now requires of all felons - it matched a semen sample recovered from Smith and entered in the bank six years earlier.
On the basis of the DNA match, Jimmerson was convicted of raping Smith and given two life sentences plus 25 years.

TCA is used as a solvent in many common products such as glue, paint, industrial degreasers, and aerosol sprays.
It can also be created in landfills and hazardous waste sites when substances decompose and their chemical components interact.
The newly discovered bacteria remove chlorines from TCA to make chloroethane, a less toxic substance that can be more easily degraded by aerobic microbes in the soil, according to the researchers, who are based at Michigan State University's Center for Microbial Ecology.

Charles Arntzen is convinced that the reddish, powdery substance he holds in his hand will make the world a safer place.
Charles Arntzen
Arntzen, an Arizona State University biologist, has been working for nearly five years to create what is basically freeze-dried tomato juice ? but not from any ordinary tomatoes.
This fruit (yes, tomatoes are fruits, not vegetables) carries a gene from a strain of the E. coli bacterium.
Some strains of E. coli can cause violent diarrhea and death.
Swigged down in reconstituted juice, however, a protein made by the E. coli gene should act as a vaccine, priming the immune system to recognize and fight off the real thing.

In the United States in the early 1800's, individual state governments
had more effect on the economy than did the federal government. States
chartered manufacturing, banking, mining, and transportation firms and
participated in the construction of various internal improvements such
as canals, turnpikes, and railroads. The states encouraged internal
improvements in two distinct ways ; first, by actually establishing
state companies to build such improvement ; second, by providing part of
the capital for mixed public-private companies setting out to make a
profit.

In the early nineteenth century, state governments also engaged in a
surprisingly large amount of direct regulatory activity, including
extensive licensing and inspection programs. Licensing targets reflected
both similarities in and differences between the economy of the
nineteenth century and that of today : in the nineteenth century, state
regulation through licensing fell especially on peddlers, innkeepers,
and retail merchants of various kinds. The perishable commodities of
trade generally came under state inspection, and such important frontier
staples as lumber and gunpowder were also subject to state control.
Finally, state governments experimented with direct labor and business
regulation designed to help the individual laborer or consumer,
including setting maximum limits on hours of work and restrictions on
price-fixing by businesses.

Surrounding Alaska on all but one side are two oceans and a vast sea,
giving this state the longest coastline in the United States. In fact,
if the coastlines of all of its peninsulas and islands are considered,
Alaska has a longer coastline, 33,904 miles (54,563 kilometers), than
all the other 49 states together.

Another of Alaska's large peninsulas is Seward, in which a number of
smaller eastern states could be swallowed up. The Kenai Peninsula, less
extensive than Seward, is about the size of the state of Maryland.
Kenai

Part of Alaska's ocean heritage, many islands lie along the fringes of
the state. Much of southeastern Alaska is made up of the Alexander
Archipelago of 1100 islands, including Baranof, Kuiu, and Admiralty.
Continuing up the coast are the islands of Prince William Sound. The
Aleutian Islands pursue their bleak and windswept course in a long arc
that encloses the Bering Sea. Included in the Aleutian chain are whole
