→ …가 도래함으로써: with the advent of~; with the emergence of~
→ 식사유형: the dietary pattern
→ 식료품점에 가면 쉽게 살 수 있는 인스탄트 식품: instant food items that are readily available in groceries

→ …의 대량소비를 기화로: taking advantage of the mass consumption of~
→ 차제에: at this juncture; under/ in these circumstances
→ 전면적인 행정감사: an all-out administrative inspection; a nationwide investigation
→ 뿌리뽑다: root out
(ANS) The dietary pattern in our country has largely changed nowadays with the advent of an era of instant food. Many of traditional dishes have been replaced by instant food items that are readily available in groceries. In industrial societies, such a phenomenon is inevitable, since fast food makes it possible for busy hardworking people to save time and energy.
But in the wake of such a drastic change, some immoral food producers have been producing unwholesome food items potentially harmful to the health of consumers, taking advantage of the mass consumption of instant food. Under these circumstances it is more than appropriate that the public health authorities should have conducted an all-out inspection to root out substandard food.

→ 이와 같은 추세: this trend; this change of wind ex) 한국 여론의 추세는 그 정책에 대해서 반대적이다.(Korean public opinion is running against the policy.)
→ 학계: the academic circle
→ …을 고수하다: stick to~
(ANS) This change of wind has all taken place within the academic circle, affecting little those who constitute the bulk of English teachers. The bulk of English teachers still stick to the grammar-translation method, teaching English in the way English was taught twenty or thirty years ago.

(ANS 3) As you will readied if you speak in front of others, to express your opinions in the right way, even in your native language. is very difficult.

It is said that~.
→ 사람들 앞에서: in public
(ANS 1) It is said that the Koreans don't express their feelings of joy and anger. It seems that the Europeans and Americans not only do laugh but also express many other emotions directly on their faces.
(ANS 2) Koreans are said to avoid revealing their emotions. On the other hand, we can say that Westerners not only show no hesitation about laughing in public but allow many other emotions to show.

→ 한 사람이라도 더 많은 승객: as many passengers as possible
→ 발차하다: start; leave
(ANS 1) Which serves the public better ― Korean buses, which will take on as many passengers as possible, or buses in Europe and in America, which always start before they are overcrowded?
(ANS 2) Which is of greater service to the public ― Korean buses taking on as many passengers as possible, or buses in Western countries, always leaving before being jammed with passengers?

[比較] pupil, student, scholar, disciple
The teacher found her pupils exceedingly restless that day./ She has ten pupils to whom she gives instruction in music.

ex) Now, when everything is public and so much pride is on the line on both sides, it's harder.

There is no reason for the municipal council to commit this folly and

Even now, there is little change in the attitude of Seoulites toward

What is important is that politicians as well as the general public join

We cherish the traditional Korean virtue of helping neighbors in

Another suggestion is that families can also profitably spend the

Yongsan Base Park Plan :
We welcome the Seoul city government's plan to turn the Yongsan

which the people of Seoul are able to relax and slough off the troubles

What needs to be underscored is the fact that Seoul's per capita
park acreage is only 4.4 square meters, only a third of New York's 14.4
sq. meters and Paris's 12.7 sq. meters. In fact all Korean cities, both old
and new, suffer from a lack of parks and public recreational facilities.

Because there is solid popular support for a quick crackdown on the

law violators in the past.

In a pluralistic democracy, such as the United States, there is a little chance that a monolithic public opinion will develop on any controversial issue.

Many leaders in the automobile industry believe that gasoline shortages and higher prices will lead the public to buy more compacts.

Another solution to the dangerous energy situation is to improve our conservation efforts.
For example, we have to turn off the lights in rooms that we are not using.
It would also help if we walked or used public transportation more.
Unfortunately, improvements in both conservation and efficiency are only temporary solutions.
Because they do not explain what we will do when fuels run out.

The combination of a falling birth rate and an increase in life expectancy is likely to cause problems for governments.
It is the young and the middle-aged who do most work and pay most taxes.
In other words, it is they who keep the country going,
for it is the revenue from taxes that pays for public services and state benefits.
Therefore, the lack of balance between the number of young and old is very worrying in financial terms.

Some visitors to the United States are surprised to find that many public places are "non-smoking" areas
and that some Americans are almost hostile to smokers.
In many American restaurants, you will be asked, "Smoking or non-smoking?"
indicating which section of the restaurant you wish to sit in.
Recently, the U.S. government has published studies of the dangers of secondhand smoke,
especially for children whose parents smoke at home.

Actress Julia Roberts said, “What's nice about my dating life is that I don't have to leave my house.
All I have to do is reading the paper: I'm marrying Richard Gere and dating Daniel Day-Lewis.”
What makes Roberts such a popular person in both regular and gossip papers is the type of movie character that she plays.
The public loves her characters and her acting.
One of the most widely acclaimed movies where she has starred is Pretty Woman.

More and more women are working, and they are demanding equal salaries and equally responsible positions.
It is not uncommon for a woman to be the president of a corporation these days.
Many businesses encourage women to advance to high management positions, and every year, schools produce more women doctors, lawyers, and accountants.
Politics and governments are still other areas that are feeling the effects of the women's movement.
Women are being elected to public office in increasing numbers.
The United States currently has several women governors.

We are trained to control bad feelings such as anger or sorrow in public and to think before we act on them.
That doesn't necessarily mean we should make this kind of control a habit in our personal lives.
My advice? Unexpressed feelings are harmful.
If you're not alone, simply postpone them for a few moments.
Then go somewhere private and do whatever the feeling seems to want you to do.
Cry, tremble, or shake your fists.
In short, expressing feelings is good for your mental health.

How can young people without power and resources help to solve social problems?
Youngsters learn by digging in and finding out what the issues are all about.
And by being informed, they can influence adults through direct action.
In fact, given an opportunity, young people many times have brought their thinking about significant issues to the attention of public officials.
Thanks to the actions of young people, historical sites have been saved, and several kinds of endangered plants and animals have been preserved.

In July 2001, the European Union passed a law requiring all food products from GM crops to be clearly marked.
Many countries have stopped further planting until there are more health checks.
Moreover, public concern is so great in some countries that food companies are ending the use of GM crops altogether.
So, people around the world are starting to ask the question: Just how safe are these new “designer” foods?

People can now watch a great variety of video tapes at home on the VCR.
Materials available include everything stocked at the local video store and movies or any other programs from the 24-hour selections on television, as well as tapes made at home or borrowed from friends.
Such entertainment in the home is also more affordable than it is in public places.
The greater convenience of watching tapes at any hour and pausing a tape or finishing it at a later time makes entertainment possible for people who have very limited opportunities to go to the movies or watch television.
The VCR also enables family and friends to be together in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoying one another’s company and also communicating in a way that is not possible in a movie theater.

Learning a language is not a matter of acquiring a set of rules and building up a large vocabulary.
The teacher’s roles should not be directed at informing his students about a language, but at enabling them to use it.
The drills and exercises a student does have one end in sight: to enable him to become a skilled performer.
The student’s command of a language will therefore be judged not by how much he knows but by how well he can perform in public.

In an Arabic country, women cannot appear in public unless they are covered from head to toe in loose black scarves and robes.
They interpret Islam, their religion, to mean that all women should be shielded from view.
Women are also not allowed to drive.
When they ride in a car, they must sit in the back seat.
They cannot travel without male consent, either.
A wife has to obtain a permission slip from her husband before she can check into a hotel or leave the country.
Women are not allowed to work or study alongside men.
Their Islamic religion also forbids them from entering cemeteries because their mourning might distract men.

Falls are a serious public health problem among older adults.
More than a third of adults aged 65 years and older fall each year.
For seniors, the risk of falling may be heightened by medications that cause dizziness or that can impair balance.
Falls can also result from diminished vision, hearing, and muscle strength.
Fortunately, preventing falls is a matter of common sense.
You can start by targeting the bathroom.
Securely attach non-slip grab bars and rubber mats in tubs and showers.
Install a raised toilet seat if needed.

Being able to put aside one's self-centered focus and impulses has social benefits:
it opens the way to empathy, to real listening, to taking another person's perspective.
Empathy, as we have seen, leads to caring, altruism, and compassion.
Seeing things from another's perspective breaks down biased stereotypes, and so breeds tolerance and acceptance of differences.
These capacities are ever more called on in our increasingly pluralistic society, allowing people to live together in mutual respect and creating the possibility of productive public discourse.
These are basic arts of democracy.

A few years ago, when I was back in Kansas, I gave a talk at my old college.
It was open to the public, and afterward a very old man came up to me and asked me if my maiden name had been Wemyss.
I said yes, thinking he might have known my father or my grandfather. But no.
"When I was young," he said, "I once worked for your great-grandfather, Robert Wemyss, when he had the sheep ranch here."
I think that was a moment when I realized all over again something of great importance to me.

I want to thank the smokers of the world for their consideration.
Since smoking has been banned in many public areas there has been a remarkable change in attitude.
Rather than anger at being pushed outside on cold, rainy days, I have witnessed polite cooperation.
Even in areas where smoking is not specifically prohibited I have seen smokers excuse themselves from groups to go outside.
Most important, I have seen smokers excuse themselves when small children are present.
As a former smoker, I think these considerate folks deserve special thanks for their remarkable change in behavior.

In democratic countries, any efforts to restrict the freedom of the press are rightly condemned.
However, this freedom can easily be abused.
Stories about people often attract far more public attention than political events.
Though we may enjoy reading about the lives of others, it is extremely doubtful whether we would equally enjoy reading about ourselves.
Acting on the belief that facts are sacred, reporters can cause terrible suffering to the individuals by publishing details about their private lives.
Therefore, such abuse of this freedom should be avoided.

My interests have always been the country, but his are books, music and above all, opera, which I hate.
If he does come to see me, he's in completely the wrong clothes for the country ― fur coats, nice little leather shoes, not exactly ideal for long walks across the fields.

The consensus in my field is that this whole matter is now emerging into public consciousness.
We humans are realizing how much we manipulate each other and consequently we're reevaluating our motivations.
We're looking for another way to interact.
I think this reevaluation will be part of the new world view.

As a young man he was a deeply committed communist, and in World War
II he commanded combat units. But in the 1950's, as a senior faculty member
at Moscow's military academy, he gradually grew disillusioned with the
Soviet system, and in the early 1960's he went public with a personal
campaign for democratization and against abuses of power.

Vice President Hubert Humphrey, addressing a group of educators in Washington not
long age, outlined in some detail his own teaching experience, which includes a
short stint as associate professor of political science at a Minnesota college.
"I mention my teaching background," Humphrey said,"because, considering the
precarious future of public office, I thought you might like to look me over."

Legend has it that John F. Kennedy decided to enter politics one evening after a
long conversation with his father. Joe, Sr. was supposed to have told Jack that since
Joe, Jr. had given his life for his country during the war, it was now up to
Jack to uphold the family's tradition of political public service. The entire family would support Jack, his
father said. And as the story goes, Jack heeded his father's urging, and decided to enter politics on
the spot.
But the truth is somewhat different. Certainly there was a political tradition in
the Kennedy
family. To be sure, Joe, Sr. wanted to see this tradition carried on, and certainly
he felt it
should be carried by Jack since Joe had died. But this is all too simple

This would be something remarkable in anyone in any walk of life; but in someone
whose position was humble and obscure it might not be so surprising as it was in a
world-famous statesman who has left a deep mark, and this on the whole world and
not just on his own country. In this great statesman, the lovable human being was not
smothered by the eminent public figure; I should say that, in Nehru, there was not even
the faintest touch of pomposity or self-importance or self-consciousness. He retained the
spontaneity and the buoyancy of youth after he had been carrying for years an unusually
heavy burden of office. It was not till his last years that the unforeseen breach between
India and China began to bow him down under its weight.

(followed by) a fall in government again. Then they'll start all over."

A friend of mine took a job in the bakery section of a new supermarket.
She went to the public-address system to announce the evening's special.
"Good evening, Albertsons shoppers," she began and then realized she
had just given the name of the rival supermarket. Thinking fast, she
continued, "We're happy you're shopping at Smith's tonight."

In a good many cases unnecessary timidity makes the trouble worse than
it need be. Public opinion is always more tyrannical towards those who
obviously fear it than towards those who feel indifferent to it.
A dog will bark more loudly and bite more readily when people are afraid
of him than when they treat him with contempt, and the human herd has
something of this same characteristic. If you show that you are afraid
of them, you give promise of good hunting, whereas if you show
indifference, they begin to doubt their own power and therefore tend to
let you alone.

Because man is a social being he cares for the judgment of his fellows.
He is gratified by praise and hurt by blame. To possess a good reputation
with family, neighbors, friends, to avoid social condemnation is
undoubtedly a motive for good conduct.
Pliny stated the case with substantial truth, though perhaps with some
exaggeration, when he said, "How few there are who preserve the same
delicacy of conduct in secret as when exposed to the view of the world!"
The truth is, the generality of mankind stand in awe of public opinion,
while conscience is feared only by the few. A saying of the Arabs puts
the point with cynical brevity: "In a town where you know no one do
whatever you like."

In no other town than London is it so important, nay, essential, to have
good friends because practically everything that constitutes the charm
of London life takes place behind closed doors, either of clubs or private
houses; nowhere does social life count for so little. The Englishman is
unwilling to exhibit himself in public and still more so to mix with a
crowd of strangers.
The function of the London street is simply to contain the traffic,
which is dense that its stream sweeps the individual along with it.

In any matter of which the public has imperfect knowledge, public opinion
is as likely to be erroneous as is the opinion of an individual equally
uninformed.
To hold otherwise is to hold that wisdom can be got by combining many
ignorances.
A man who knows nothing of algebra cannot be assisted in the solution of
an algebraic problem by calling in a neighbor who knows no more than
himself, and the solution approved by the unanimous vote of a million
such men would count for nothing against that of a competent mathematician.

Many people think of crisis as being connected only with unhappy events.
'This is not the case," argued John. "There are experiences, maturational
crises we experience at times of life development and change. Some
examples are a child's first enrollment in school or his transfer at a
later age to a new school, marriage, or election to public office. These
events may hasten the occurrence of a crisis, both for the youngster and
his parents." "But there is also an unexpected kind of crisis,"
added Mary. This can stem from many sources such as having an automobile
crash, being fired from a job, falling suddenly ill, becoming involved in
a legal suit, or losing a large sum of money. Severe illness will create
a crisis not only for the individual concerned but also for his family.
And an illness may itself be caused by an emotional crisis like the death
of parents."

A few years ago, when I was back in Kansas, I gave a talk at my old
college. It was open to the public, and afterward a very old man came up
to me and asked me if my maiden name had been Wemyss. I said yes,
thinking he might have known my father or my grandfather. But no. "When I
was young," he said "I once worked for your great-grandfather, Robert
Wemyss, when he had the sheep ranch here." I think that was a moment when
I realized all over again something of great importance to me. My
long-ago families came from Scotland. My true roots were there.

For every plus, however, there is a minus. For one thing, you might
have a job, but unless it is very well-paid, you will not be able to
afford many things because living in a city is often very expensive. What
is more, public transportation is sometimes crowded and dirty,
particularly in the rush hour. Last of all, despite all the crowds, it is
still possible to feel very lonely in a city.
