^^The fact is that the leaders of Hanchongnyon and the inter-Korean
Pomchonghangnyon youth-student confederation are regarded here as a
pro-Pyongyang group with their support for the North Korean proposal

delegates from Hanchongnyon illegally sent to the North via Europe
reportedly bowed in tribute at the tomb of Kim Il-sung, laying a
bouquet there. Ironically, pro-North Korean radical student leaders
here have rarely expressed respect for any of South Korea's presidents.

The fact that so many people are still living in poverty is indeed a sad commentary on our civilization.

The jury was impressed by the fact that the testimony of two witnesses who were complete strangers coincided in every detail.

We knew that we were in for a stormy session when her prefatory remarks referred to "some surprising fact that have come to my attention."

The fact that someone is interested enough to give help to poor villagers often works wonders.
The villagers become interested in helping themselves.
They become less discouraged when they realize that they themselves can help make a better future.

Russians are big soap opera fans :
one of the most popular TV shows that ever aired in Russia was a Mexican soap opera called 'The Rich Also Cry.'
It was the story of a rich and powerful man who married his beautiful maid.
Russian viewers also love Russian game shows, music videos, and broadcasts from the parliament.
In fact, when the Russian government first aired a daily broadcast of its parliament in 1989,
people were so interested that they stayed home from work to watch it.

Some young children were talking about what they wanted to be when they grew up.
Jimmy said he wanted to be a *philanthropist.
When the other kids asked him to explain, he replied, “I heard they're the guys who have all the money.”
Jimmy was only partially right.
According to the dictionary, a philanthropist is “one who loves and seeks to benefit mankind.”
Simply having a lot of money, then, doesn't make one a philanthropist.
In fact, a poor person who “loves and seeks to benefit mankind” out of his limited resources
is more of a philanthropist than a person of great wealth who is a miser.

Evidence that eating chocolate does not cause *acne comes from two studies:
one at the Pennsylvania School of Medicine, the other by the U.S. Naval Academy.
Their research showed some interesting results.
They found that there was no difference in the skin condition between the people who ate chocolate and those who did not eat chocolate.
There is also no proof that chocolate is the cause of tooth decay.
In fact, it is believed that the cocoa butter in chocolate forms a coating over teeth that may help to protect them.

Since the 1990s, the number of the unemployed has been increasing in America.
Besides, most Americans stop working around the age 65.
Whether someone is unemployed or retired, he or she can be in emotional crisis.
Because work is so important a part of life in American society, the jobless think that they are useless and unproductive.
In fact, many people feel like working in spite of old age.

Almost everyone has heard of Halley's comet, but most people did not know what comets are.
They think they are bright objects that move quickly across the sky and then disappear,
or that they would be dangerous if they crashed into the Earth.
In fact, you cannot see most of them moving, and although they belong to the solar system,
they are different from planets because they are not solid.
One of them is Halley's Comet, which is unique.
It appears every 76 years.

Have you ever heard of a cinchona tree?
In fact, it is of great use in many respects.
The cinchona tree belongs to the evergreen family and, unlike most evergreens, has very fragrant flowers,
which may help the depressed to be cheerful.
Besides, quinine, the drug that can be extracted from cinchona bark, has proved valuable to modern medicine.
Quinine is widely used to help cure a lot of diseases.

Sociologists have noticed several things about young people today.
First, they like to hang out in malls, at coffeehouses, and in parks.
They seem to enjoy being with their friends in large open places.
Second, these young people seem to expect special treatment like not having to follow the rules.
They can also work quickly with their hands on things like computers and other electronic tools.
Fifty or sixty years ago, teenagers all wore white sailor hats.
Now something else is trendy: sports clothing.
There is, in fact, a boom in sales of sports clothes.

It is obvious that TV is addictive:
Even babies will sit for hours fascinated by the movement and changing colors.
From childhood onwards, when the sounds and pictures have meaning, it is a great temptation to just sit in front of the television.
A ‘good' program holds us because it is interesting; a 'bad' one often keeps us watching because we hope that it will improve or that a ‘better' one will follow.
Two great dangers of this unselective viewing are the way in which our senses of good and bad, right and wrong are gradually dulled and the difficulty of telling fact from fiction.

Some of the consumers think that name brands are better than store brands because the ingredients in the name brands are different.
In many cases, however, store brands are equal to name brands.
Yet, people feel the brands are somehow unequal, so they choose name brands.
In fact, many store brand products are made by the same companies that produce name brands.
Only the labels are different.
The contents inside the packages are exactly the same.
The next time you shop, compare labels and prices.
Consider if there is a real distinction between the name brand and the store brand.
If so, decide if the difference is really worth the extra money.

Ecopsychology is a new area of psychology.
Ecopsychologists study humans and their relationships to the environment.
They feel that the environment is very important to our sense of well-being.
In fact, they believe it is central to our happiness.
If we are going to be happy, we need to connect more with nature.
Children are born with this feeling of connection to nature.
They often spend long periods of time with plants, trees, and insects.

Question : Are police fair to minorities?
James : Most police do treat minorities fairly.
If one officer makes a mistake, you can read about it everywhere.
Yet, thousands of police ―black, white, men, women―have been killed over the past years.
Betty : Blacks are not treated fairly.
Blacks have been in this country more than 400 years.
Yet, we are still treated as undesirables who should pack their bags and go back to Africa.
That is why we get no respect from the police.
Joe : Most of the time we forget that police are, in fact, people.
And they react in the same way we react.
On the whole they are doing a fine job.
Betty :

Glittering gems called diamonds are among the most precious of human possessions.
Through the ages, they have been a lasting evidence of wealth.
Lands may lose their soil, buildings may be destroyed, stocks and bonds may become worthless, but the value of diamonds remain relatively unchanged.
In addition, the diamond is the hardest substance ever known.
Because of this, it is of great value for practical use.
In fact, about three-fourths of the total annual supply of diamonds is used in factories and machine shops.

How can young people without power and resources help to solve social problems?
Youngsters learn by digging in and finding out what the issues are all about.
And by being informed, they can influence adults through direct action.
In fact, given an opportunity, young people many times have brought their thinking about significant issues to the attention of public officials.
Thanks to the actions of young people, historical sites have been saved, and several kinds of endangered plants and animals have been preserved.

In recent years, we've been dreaming very different dreams.
The stuff of these dreams is fantasy―swords and wizards, knights and ladies.
The business of fantasy has become a multibillion-dollar reality, and science fiction is starting to feel old-fashioned.
Our fascination with science fiction reflected a deep faith that technology would lead us to a cyber utopia, with robot servants serving food.
But in fact, a dark, pessimistic attitude toward technology and the future is attracting more and more people.
And the evidence is the world's new concern with a nostalgic, magical vision of the past: swords, not lasers; magic, not electricity; villages, not cities; the past, not the future.

Bill : School education should include the skills needed in adult life as well as the study of knowledge and information.
Sports develop such skills by showing students how to keep fit, how to work in a team, and how to practice self-discipline.
Children who haven't been given the chance to take part in physical activities can lose out on social skills when they get older.
On the other hand, if forced to take part in sports in school, they may well discover hidden talents.
Many famous sports people started their careers in this way.
Given this fact, everybody should take a sports class in school.

Success is the act of trying to improve upon the things you're already doing.
It's growing and developing.
It's accepting bigger and greater challenges.
It's not being afraid of making a mistake, suffering a setback, or failing.
It's trying to do your very best.
And if, in the end, your very best wasn't quite good enough, you just have to go back to work and prepare a bit harder for the next time.
Nobody succeeds 100 percent in anything they do.
When you're able to recognize and accept this fact of life, you realize that failure and losing are as much a part of the game of life as are success and winning.

When honeybees fly in a garden, they may seem to skip from flower to flower at random.
Most people don’t know why bees choose one flower over another.
But the bees know why.
In fact, when searching for flowers’ nectar, they follow an exact timetable.
Bees get nectar from dandelions only in the morning.
Around noon, it’s the time for the cornflowers.
In the afternoon, bees take off for the red clover.
Honeybees go to each kind of flower at the time of day when it gives off the most nectar.

Steve Blass was a great pitcher in 1972.
In fact, he was one of the very best.
One year later, he was on his way out of baseball.
Did he get hurt? No.
Only one thing changed: he lost his confidence.
He said, “When it was gone, it was gone for good.”
He started thinking about all the things that could go wrong, and suddenly they did.
Steve Blass no longer believed he could be a major league pitcher,
and before he knew it, he no longer was a major league pitcher.
The ability to do anything must be accompanied by the belief that we can do it.
If you don’t believe in yourself, you won't be able to perform.
Steve Blass
Steve Blass

An old man got on a train with a gorgeous hat his son bought for him.
A young man beside him saw the hat on his lap and said, “Look, how elegant it is! Where did you get it?”
The old man said, “My son bought it at H. S. department store for me.”
The young man stealthily slipped his calling card into the hat and yelled,
“A few weeks ago, I bought the same hat at H. S. department store
and stuck my calling card inside the hat, but the hat was stolen the other day.
Now I see the calling card in your hat, so it must be mine.
Now give it back to me.”
The old man thought for a while what he should do.
At last the old man handed the hat to the young man and said,
In fact, I’m a farmer and a few days ago, in a moonless night, a thief stole my favorite cow and dropped this hat unconsciously.
You are insisting that this hat is yours.
Thank God, you can take your lost hat and I can take my stolen cow back.”
At this the young man hesitantly said, “May I be excused a moment? Nature calls me.”
The young man stood up and went away in a hurry, leaving the hat behind. He never returned!

Some years ago, Fortune magazine conducted a survey of many of the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies.
The goal was to try to find traits that these successful people had in common.
Surprising to say, there weren't many! Some of these top executives had gone to excellent universities, others not.
Some brought years of experience to their jobs, while others had enjoyed a quicker rise to success.
One of the few things they shared was that, along the way, they had each experienced a major career setback.
Most of them, in fact, had been fired from at least one job.
Understandably, none of them at the time felt they had been treated fairly.
Dwelling on life's unfairness and cruelties will not make your life better.
Those CEOs learned to move beyond setbacks.
We might even conclude that, without confrontation with negative events, they would not be where they are today.

In primitive societies, people had to fight wild beasts, not only for self-defense, but also for food.
In addition, they couldn't avoid coming into conflict with other groups.
As the result, people ended up practicing different forms of fighting to protect themselves.
During this period, when grappling was a predominant method of combat, various techniques were invented.
And, naturally, this developed into a martial art.
A wall painting in an ancient tomb shows this fact and there are many historical records of it as well.
Nowadays, ssireum(Korean wrestling) is a type of folk competition in which two players, holding on to a long piece of cloth tied around the waist,
try to use their strength and various techniques to wrestle each other down to the ground.

What a computer is designed to do is, essentially, arithmetic.
Any problem, however complex, can somehow be broken down into a well-defined series of arithmetical operations that can be solved by a computer.
The computer is amazing not because of its capability to handle arithmetical operations,
but because of the fact that it can perform these operations in one billionth of a second without error.
The human brain, on the other hand, is incredibly poor at arithmetic.
Unlike computers, it needs and has always needed outside help to solve the simplest problems.
We began by counting on our fingers, and have moved on to better things only with the help of pen and paper, Arabic numerals, mechanical calculators and eventually computers.

“Boys and girls, playtime is over, get back to work.”
Most of us learned early in life that work and play are separate, and that if you are playing you could not possibly be working.
But to have a livable work environment, a certain amount of playfulness or lightheartedness is required.
An innovative environment demands even more playfulness.
Assuming the matter-of-fact attitude may seem more efficient, but it constricts one's capacity to generate new solutions when needed.
The freedom to be playful expands creative opportunities.
The spirit that allows people to wear a peculiar tie or to laugh out loud without fearing what others think is the same spirit that encourages them to consider new ideas.

It also needs to be mentioned that the author teaches an important moral lesson.
In her fictional world, good almost always triumphs over evil.
In fact, it is the characters who lie, cheat, or hurt others that are routinely punished by the end of the story.
Those who want to ban Rowling's books seem to have missed the point.
They need to read them more carefully.

Elephants living in the jungle or on the plains sometimes sense danger.
At the first hint of danger, elephants will raise their trunks to smell any threat.
When an enemy is about to attack, the trunk may be used to warn the rest of the herd.
This is done by sending a loud trumpet-like sound, which makes the earth shake.
This warns the other elephants in the herd of possible danger.
The trunk plays a vital part in its life.
In fact, it is almost impossible for an elephant to survive if its trunk becomes damaged.

Most writers and poets suffer under the genius syndrome.
It is assumed that writing is a divine gift and that if you have that gift,
you should lock yourself away for three years and then come out with a masterpiece.
If you have to study writing, then you're not a genius and you shouldn't be a writer.
In fact, the intellectual privately agree with it.
However, Nicholas Delbanco doesn't believe the idea.
He says that if you want to improve your tennis skills, tennis lessons are a good idea.
He doesn't emphasize work that's entirely subjective and urges his students to imitate rather than create.

One 10-year-old boy decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a terrible car accident.
The boy began lessons with an old judo master.
The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.
Feeling a little bored, the boy said to his teacher, “Shouldn't I be learning more moves?”
The teacher replied, “This is the only move you'll ever have to know.” Not quite understanding, the boy kept training.

Although chemically grown foods might seem much cheaper than organic foods, food prices do not reflect hidden costs.
These included more than $100 billion in federal subsidies in 2004 alone.
Pesticide regulation and testing leads to higher costs.
The environmental damage is another big hidden cost.
Food prices don't count waste disposal and cleanup.
The prices don't include the wells poisoned by farm chemicals.
They don't count the fact that we're losing marine life because of nitrogen runoff from overusing fertilizers.
Eating an unhealthy diet adds a host of additional costs including many deaths.

But there is a controversial side to globalization - a dark side, the side that has so many people demonstrating when the World Bank and IMF meet.
They are concerned that the poor and weak are being left behind in this new global world, that the Third World may never even feel any of the benefits.
In fact, some of the power we once had to control our environment, our economy, our lives, has slipped away.
Increasingly, foreign banks, corporations, and institutions are affecting our communities.

We know and accept this fact or principle of process in the area of physical things, but to understand it in emotional areas, in human relations, and even in the area of personal character is less common and more difficult.

After the fall of the medieval world view, we in the west suddenly became aware that we lived in a totally unknown universe.
In attempting to understand the nature of this universe we knew we had to somehow separate fact from superstition.
In this regard we scientists assumed a particular attitude known as scientific skepticism, which in effect demands solid evidence for any new assertion about how the world works.
Before we would believe anything, we wanted evidence that could be seen and grabbed with the hands.
Any idea that couldn't be proved in some physical way was systematically rejected.

Fashions are the currently accepted styles of appearance and behavior.
The fact that some style is called a "fashion" implies a social recognition that it is temporary and will eventually be replaced by a new style.
In small-scale, traditional communities, fashions are virtually unknown.
In these communities everyone of similar age and sex wears much the same clothing and behaves in much the same way, and there is little change in styles from year to year or even from generation to generation.
In modern societies, however, fashions may change very rapidly indeed: automobile bodies assume new contours every year, and women's hemlines rise and fall with the passage of the seasons.

Teacher: I see your point.
But, well, I'm afraid that may be too extreme an approach.
Don't you think so, Tom?
Tom,
Tom: Well...
Tom:
I think it's possible.
As a matter of fact, I bike to school everyday.
That's why I think I stay in shape.

Elephants are the largest land animals in the world.
Whales are the largest sea animals.
These two huge animals may, in fact, be related.
Biologists now believe that the ancestors of elephants once lived in the sea.

No matter how wonderful his other qualities may be, do not marry a man who has hit you, threatened you or humiliated you.
In fact, don't go out with him a second time.
Recognize the fact that he is hazardous to your emotional and physical health and avoid him like the plague.

Scientists also know that the cold virus is very small (an electron microscope is needed to see it), very durable, and very difficult to identify.
In fact, there are probably over one hundred different types of cold viruses.
Scientists cannot identify one virus as more responsible for causing colds than other viruses.
Therefore, it is difficult for them to develop a vaccine to prevent colds.
If you are vaccinated against virus A, you are protected from virus A, but not from viruses X, Y, and Z.

Canada is an exciting, innovative country where creative business thinking is applauded.
Second largest country in the world, it stretches for almost 10 million square kilometers.
Most of Canada's 23 million people live and work near the southern border.
Small enterprise plays a significant role in the life of our communities.
In fact, there are about a million small businesses in the country.
These small businesses employ about 42 percent of Canadian workers, especially in the construction, service and trade sectors, and account for 30 percent of the business contribution to our Gross National Product.
Canada is a trading nation.
Over a quarter of all goods produced in Canada are exported.

The fact is that the less developed countries(LDCs) should not have to be producing primarily for developed country markets.
In the first place, they could trade more with each other, and be less dependent on developed countries for trade.
The LDCs have within themselves all that is required for growth.
They have surpluses of fuel and of the principal minerals.
They have enough land to feed themselves, if they cultivate it properly.
They are capable of learning the skills of manufacturing, and of saving the capital required for modernization.
Their development does not in the long run depend on the existence of the developed countries, and their potential for growth would be unaffected even if all the developed countries were to sink under the sea.

Every year more than 6,000 people die and 130,000 are injured in home fires.
Many of these casualties are among the nation's most precious resources, our children.
Even more troubling is the fact that many of these deaths could have been prevented had the smoke detectors been operating.

Some people think that the best time to begin studying a foreign language is in childhood, and that the younger you are, the easier it is to learn another language.
There is little evidence, however, that children in language classrooms learn foreign languages any better than adults (people over age 15) in similar classroom situations.
In fact, adults have many advantages over children: better memories, more efficient ways of organizing information, better study habits, and greater ability to handle complex mental tasks.
In addition, adults are often better motivated than children: they see learning a foreign language as necessary for education or career.

The moment he saw me, he hugged me and tried to calm my ragged nerves.
I kept repeating, "I'll never drive again."
He said, "Oh, yes, you will.
In fact, you are going to drive me home."
Then, he told me about Thomas Alva Edison and how he made the first electric light bulb after seven years of hard work and experimentation.
Edison handed the precious bulb to his laboratory assistant to put away.
The assistant accidentally dropped it.
Of course, the bulb broke into a thousand pieces.
Edison went to work on a second bulb.
After he had completed it, he handed it to his assistant again, to prove that he had confidence in him.
I knew how the assistant must have felt when I was behind the wheel of that car, driving my dad home.
This was only one of the lessons I learned from this remarkable man.
I am thankful to have had him for 18 years.

Once upon a time, the animals organized a school.
They adopted a curriculum consisting of running, climbing, swimming and flying.
All animals took all the subjects.
The duck was excellent in swimming, better in fact than his instructor, and made excellent grades in flying, but he was very poor in running.
Since he was low in running he had to stay after school and also drop swimming to practice running.
This was kept up until his feet were badly worn and he was only average in swimming.
But average was acceptable in school, so nobody worried about that except the duck.
The squirrel was excellent in climbing until he developed frustrations in the flying class where his teacher made him start from the ground up instead of from the tree-top down.
He also developed charley horses from over-exertion and he got poor grades in climbing and running.
The eagle was a problem child.
In climbing class he beat all the others to the top of the tree, but insisted on using his own way of getting there.
He had to be disciplined severely.
