give up; (=abandon, surrender)
He gave up the attempt in despair.
When they were surrounder by the enemy, they gave up.

[比較] swing, sway, oscillate, vibrate, fluctuate, undulate, rock
The lantern hanging overhead swung in the wind.
The tavern sign swings from a hook above the door./ He walked down the street swinging his arms.
The branches sway in the breeze.
A pendulum oscillates.
He oscillates regularly between elation and despair.
You know that if your strike a note of music, all the octave notes will vibrate./ A tuning fork vibrates when struck.
stock prices that fluctuate from day to day
undulating land/ The flag undulates in the breeze.
A cradle rocks.

throws him out, the boy is in despair.

In despair, he ran out of the casino where they had been dancing,
rushed to the lake, and shot himself.

When Roxana arrived, she found her son in such despair and misery that her heart was touched and her motherhood rose up strong in her.
He was ruined past hope now; his destruction would be immediate and sure, and he would be an outcast and friendless.
It was because he was a nigger, despised race.
His position in society is one of enslavement, oppression and discrimination.
On the whole it is only the most back-breaking and most despised jobs that are open to him.
In many states niggers cannot go to the same school or eat at the same table with the white people.
When Roxana tried to comfort his son, it was useless.

Those who are at the mercy of impulse―who lack self-control―suffer a moral deficiency:
The ability to control impulse is the base of will and character.
By the same token, the root of altruism lies in empathy, the ability to read emotions in others; lacking a sense of another's need or despair, there is no caring.
And if there are any two moral stances that our times call for, they are precisely these, self-restraint and compassion.

Think about it.
If I don't have wisdom I can only teach you my ignorance.
If I don't have joy I can only teach you despair.
If I don't have freedom I can only put you in cages.
But everything that I have I can give away.
That's the only reason for having it.
But I've got to have it first.
And so I dedicate myself to becoming the best me the world has ever known.

I saw how men died. I saw how they bore pain. I saw what hope looked like,
fear, and relief; I saw the dark lines that despair drew on a face; I saw
courage and steadfastness. I saw faith shine in the eyes of those who
trusted in what I could only think was an illusion, and I saw the gallantry
that made a man greet the prognosis of death with an ironic joke because
he was too proud to let those about him see the terror of his soul.

*desperate 필사적인 filled with despair and ready to do anything, regardless of danger:

But don't despair.
For many, this change is slight, perhaps unnoticeable.
Others adapt to fading hearing by becoming, even unconsciously, better listeners, watching the speaker's face or sitting closer to a sound source.
But the most effective way is to protect any hearing that remains in the ear and in the brain.
Here's how.

discouragement. Depression ranges from normal feelings of 'the blues' through
dysthymia to major depression. It in many ways resembles the grief and mourning that
follow bereavement; there are often feelings of low self-esteem; guilt, and self-reproach,
withdrawal from interpersonal contact, and somatic symptoms such as eating and sleep
disturbances.
