While world population growth has, in general, slowed down…
→ 년간 1.9%의 성장을 이룩하다: grow at 1.9 percent a year
으로: largely because of~
→ 국제원조의 삭감: the cutback in international aid
→ 「인구증가율은 2.02% 였다」: The population grew at…
→ 1% 상승한 데 불과하다: rose by only one percent a year
(ANS) Despite an overall slowdown in world population growth, the populations of many developing countries are continuing to grow at high rate. Between 1980 and 1982 the economies of the developing countries grew at only 1.9 percent a year, largely because of the economic recession and the cutback in international aid. At the same time their populations grew at 2.02 percent. But per capita income in the poorest nations rose by only about one percent a year between 1960 and 1981. At present per capita income of the richest country is 220 times the per capita income of the poorest country. The gap between the developing and developed countries will widen still further.

It was at dusk the following day.
→ 비좁은 (탁자사이로) 들어오다: shove through~; push one's way through~
(He insisted on going back.)
→ 눈살을 찌푸리다: frown; knit one's brow
(ANS) It was at dusk the following day-it happened to be a particularly cold day, and Mr. Koh had remained in the tea-room until late, when Kwanshik showed up again. He was carrying a bundle wrapped in an old brown blanket. He approached Mr. Koh, shoving through the narrow space between the coffee tables dragging the bundle, while everyone in the tea-room watched him with wide-open eyes. A waitress tried to stop him, but he pretended not to notice her. Mr. Koh rose from his seat, frowning.

→ 「버스를 타고 출근하다」는 go to work by bus「저녁 늦게 까지」는 till late in the evening ( till late at night이 아님을 유의.)
→ 「퇴근하다」- leave one's office, come back from one's office, come (back)home from work
→ 「~한 후 바로」- as soon as, no sooner ~than, the moment, instantly
→ 「이따금」- occasionally, now and then, at times, once in a while
→ 「연휴」- consecutive holidays
(ANS 1) Occasional consecutive holidays are the most pleasant thing to those who go to work in a crowded bus in the morning. Work till late in the evening, leave their office, and go to bed immediately after supper.
(ANS 2) Perhaps nothing is more pleasant than occasional consecutive holidays for those who go through the routine of going to work in a crowded bus in the morning. Continuing to work till late in the evening, coming back home and immediately after supper, going to bed.

[比較] look, see, watch
ex) look for violets in the spring(봄에 오랑캐꽃을 찾다)/ He refused to look in the mirror the nurse gave him.
ex) I am looking, Mother, I can't see it anywhere.
ex) animals able to see in the dark/ Once over the pass you will see the town below you.(저 고개만 넘어서면 아래에 그 마을이 보인다.)
ex) watch while a procession passes/ watch something as closely as a cat watches a mouse.

[比較] refuse, waste, rubbish, trash, garbage
a stream polluted by refuse from a manufacturing plant/ heaps of refuse left by the former tenant
wiped his hands on a wad of cotton waste
Throw it in the rubbish barrel
In its center stood the abandoned capitol building. Its steps were littered with trash.
Some municipalities have a separate collection for ashes, garbage and other rubbish, while others have all put together and taken up at one collection.

The F.B.I. now contracts out some security checks on its own
employees, but the number is small, the bureau uses its own retired
agents and it maintains tight control over the outside work. The
economies promised under the Gore plan, presented as one of its main
selling points, are not certain. The government predicts a five-year
saving of $20 million. While the plan does shrink the Federal payroll
by 700 people and their benefit packages, the government will still
handle some of the work, creating the potential for duplication. The
initial contract is a three-year, sole-source, non-competitive agreement
with a work force that is experienced but untested in the private sector.

The immediate cause of the tragic incidents is, of course, a natural
disaster. In Chorwon near the Demilitarized Zone, 20 soldiers lost their

leaving at least eight Army and Air Force personnel dead or missing.

In a letter to a friend in 1821, Ludwig van Beethoven described how a beautiful piece of music came to him while sleeping in a carriage.

It is often believed that the function of school is to produce knowledgeable people.
If schools only provide knowledge, however, they may destroy creativity, producing ordinary people.
We often hear stories of ordinary people who, if education had focused on creativity, could have become great artists or scientists.
Those victims of education should have received training to develop creative talents while in school.
It really is a pity that they did not.

One day, while Thomas Edison was deeply absorbed in trying to solve a scientific problem, he went to the court house to pay his taxes.
He had to stand in line for some time; and when his turn came, he forgot his own name.
One of his neighbors, seeing his embarrassment, reminded him that his name is Thomas Edison.

Storms affect birds in a variety of ways.
When a storm is approaching, birds may stop flying and rest nearby trees.
If the coming storm is a severe one, the birds may fly off to an area where the weather is clear.
Birds may appear uneasy and nervous when a storm is on its way.
They might become noisier.
When a snowstorm is coming, birds may eat more, too.
They seem to realize that food might be difficult to get for a while.

In 1926, there was a double tragedy in her life because her much-loved mother died.
Agatha Christie suffered a nervous breakdown, and one night she abandoned her car and mysteriously disappeared.
She went missing for 11 days and was found in a hotel in the north of England.
It is interesting to note that it was while she was suffering so much that she wrote one of her masterpieces, The Murder of Roger Ackroyal.

The Murder of Roger Ackroyal을 썼다는 것은 흥미로운 일이다.

A developing trend threatens the supply of manpower in the areas of science and engineering,
as students are increasingly avoiding those fields.
College graduates who majored in them are reluctant to take related jobs.
The nation is on the edge of importing research workers,
while many college graduates from these fields are preparing to enter medical or medicine colleges.
Experts are afraid that it will be serious blow to South Korea in the long term if the trend continues.

Chopsticks are handy eating tools that have been around for a very long time.
The Chinese invented them over 2500 years ago.
Chopsticks are still used widely today, even though many people in Japan and China are using knives and forks
because they want to learn more about Western ways of eating.
While interest in using knives and forks is growing throughout Asia,
more and more Americans are learning to use chopsticks.
They use them mainly when they eat in Asian restaurants.
Waiters in most Japanese, Korean and Chinese restaurants in America will give you chopsticks if you ask for them.

Americans make no distinction between gesturings for silence to an adult or to a child.
An American will put one finger to the lips for both,
while an Ethiopian will use only one finger to a child and four fingers for an adult.
To use only one finger for an adult is disrespectful.
On the other hand, Ethiopians make no distinction in gesturing to indicate emphatic negation.
They shake their index finger from side to side to an adult as well as to a child,
while this gesture is used only for children by Americans.
Thus, if visitors are not conscious of the meaning of such behavior,
they not only will offend their hosts but they will be offended by them.

A marching band plays only instruments which musicians can carry as they walk and so the instruments used are usually limited.
In many cases, a marching band is usually led by a drum major.
On the other hand, a concert band is led by a conductor as is a symphony orchestra.
Because concert bands play while seated or in stationary formation, they can use a larger variety of instruments.
In addition to those instruments played by marching bands, concert bands also use such instruments as the cello, double bass, timpani, harp, chimes and so on.

Although it is based on a real event, this dramatic film is really a mixture of a Hollywood love story and a disaster movie.
At the time of its production it was the most expensive film ever made, in spite of not having well-known stars.
This was partly because of the amazing special effects,
but also because of numerous problems while it was being filmed, which resulted in several months delay.
Although the end of this film is no surprise, it is still incredibly moving.
It was nominated for 14 Oscars, including best film, best director and best actress.

Jeff Lim, 66, a retailer from La Union province, northwest of Manila, has had trouble falling asleep for more than ten years.
Every night he lies awake in bed for a while, then gets up quietly so as not to disturb his wife and turns on the television.

Frodo woke and found himself lying in bed.
At first he thought that he had slept late, after a long unpleasant dream that still hovered on the edge of memory.
Or perhaps he had been ill?
But the ceiling looked strange; it was flat, and it had dark beams richly carved.
He lay a little while longer looking at patches of sunlight on the wall, and listening to the sound of the waterfall.
“Where am I, and what is the time?” He said aloud to the ceiling.
In the House of Elrond, and it is ten o'clock in the morning,” said a voice.
There was the old wizard, sitting in a chair by the open window.

“Super Size Me” is a documentary film on a guy who ate only hamburgers for a while.
It was intended to show how harmful fast foods are to our health.
I believe the experiment is highly educational.
The results of the experiment are truly shocking and I hope this documentary will cause people to be aware of the problem of obesity.
I suggest schools should show this movie in classes.
Although it may be hard for kids to believe such results,
they need to learn that they have to be responsible for what they eat.

A doctor, while driving home from a country club, picks up a young girl in a white dress.
She climbs into the back seat of his car because the front seat is crowded with golf clubs, and tells him an address to take her to.
As he arrives at the address, he turns to speak to her but she is gone.
The curious doctor rings the doorbell of the address given to him by the mysterious girl.
A gray-haired man answers the door and reveals that the girl was his daughter.
She has died in a car accident exactly two years earlier.

Reporter : What is the main role of your organization?
Mr. Kim : We gather opinions and requests from people and deliver them to the politicians.
And when we find some politicians not doing their jobs properly, we push them to do their best to fulfill their duties.
Reporter : Why did you choose to work here in Seoul?
Mr. Kim : Well, we talked over this issue for a long time.
And most of the members agreed that it would be better to have our office in the center of political power.
The decision was right and we'll stay here for a while.

There are many ways to communicate.
Gestures using motions are very common in communication all over the world.
Every gesture expresses different meanings and every country has its own language of gestures.
Let's look at one of the American gestures, for example.
Tapping your temple with your forefinger or making a circular motion around your ear, usually while rolling your eyes towards someone and then pointing at them, means that you disapprove of that person's behavior or opinion as being abnormal.

When I was studying for my doctorate at the University of Southern California,
I spent every weekend in my study that I had established in our garage.
One Sunday a friend took my family to Disneyland.
They phoned me from there: “Hey, John! I bet you wish you were here with us!”
First, I grumbled at them.
Then I felt sorry for myself, sitting alone in a hot garage while others were having fun.
And then I reminded myself why I was there.
I wanted to be Dr. Anderson.
I enjoyed the thought of myself as Dr. Anderson.
Ignoring the temperature and the phone call, I went back to work.

The experience is a familiar one to many in an emergency-room.
A patient who has been pronounced dead and unexpectedly recovers later describes what happened to him during those moments―sometimes hours―when his body showed no signs of life.
According to one repeated story, the patient feels himself rushing through a long, dark tunnel while noise rings in his ears.
Suddenly, he finds himself outside his own body, looking down with curious detachment at a medical team's efforts to revive him.
He hears what is said, notes what is happening but cannot communicate with anyone.
Soon, his attention is drawn to other presences in the room―spirits of dead relatives or friends―who communicate with him nonverbally.
Gradually, he is drawn to a vague ‘being of light.'
This being invites him to evaluate his life and shows him highlights of his past in panoramic vision.
The patient longs to stay with the being of light but is drawn back into his physical body and recovers.

The laws of order are the rules that control changes in meaning when order changes.
“The cat caught the mouse” means something obviously different from “The mouse caught the cat.”
Order is used differently in different languages and cultures.
While order is of major importance on the sentence level in English, this is not the case in some languages.
Order also has great importance in other parts of cultural systems besides language: order of birth, order of arrival, order in line to get a ticket.
Order applies to the courses of a meal.
Consider what it would like to start dinner with dessert.

My hometown is famous for its scenic beauty and its flowers.
The lilac fair is especially well known.
In the spring, when the lilacs are at their most beautiful, many people come from all over the country to visit the town and see the fair.
It is wonderful to see families walking together among the lilacs, parents carrying small children on their shoulders, while others run and play around them.
Meanwhile, teenagers dance to the rhythm of the music on their cassette players, and old people sit on park benches, eating their packed meals.
They all feel lucky to be alive and healthy at this time.
It is difficult for them to imagine a better day out.

When other painful changes came along in later life, I always recalled my mother's words.
And recently, when a friend of mine was having a hard time dealing with the loss of his job, I gave him the same advice.
At first he couldn't accept it, but after a while, he came to see that this was one of the changes that happen to everyone.
In the end, losing a job motivated him to start his own business.

An old man got on a train with a gorgeous hat his son bought for him.
A young man beside him saw the hat on his lap and said, “Look, how elegant it is! Where did you get it?”
The old man said, “My son bought it at H. S. department store for me.”
The young man stealthily slipped his calling card into the hat and yelled,
A few weeks ago, I bought the same hat at H. S. department store
and stuck my calling card inside the hat, but the hat was stolen the other day.
Now I see the calling card in your hat, so it must be mine.
Now give it back to me.”
The old man thought for a while what he should do.
At last the old man handed the hat to the young man and said,
In fact, I’m a farmer and a few days ago, in a moonless night, a thief stole my favorite cow and dropped this hat unconsciously.
You are insisting that this hat is yours.
Thank God, you can take your lost hat and I can take my stolen cow back.”
At this the young man hesitantly said, “May I be excused a moment? Nature calls me.”
The young man stood up and went away in a hurry, leaving the hat behind. He never returned!

Most weeds are harmful, unwanted plants.
But a Danish biotech company has adapted one plant to help save lives.
Scientists in Copenhagen have genetically modified the plant
so that it changes from its normal green color to red when its roots touch nitrogen dioxide, a gas that leaks out of buried land mines and unexploded weapons.
Many of these explosives can remain active for over 50 years, emitting nitrogen dioxide all the while.
Getting rid of the mines from the ground is tedious, painstaking work.
But the color-changing plant, expected to be used regularly within two years, does present a cost-effective alternative to the most common detection methods currently available ― humans with metal detectors and mine-sniffing dogs.

It is difficult to say just how urbanized the world has become.
With urban growth taking place rapidly, it is impossible even for experts to do more than provide estimates.
According to the UN data, almost half of the world’s population is now urban.
These data make the very different definitions of urban used by different countries.
Some countries count any settlement of 1,000 people or more as urban,
while others use 10,000 as the minimum for an urban settlement; and Japan uses 50,000 as the cut-off.
This, by the way, tells us that urbanization is a relative phenomenon.
In countries like Peru, a settlement of 2,000 represents a significant center.
However, a much larger concentration of people is required to count as “urban.”

Teenagers who feel insecure about their own status and popularity often try to reassure themselves by pointing a finger at someone who is obviously out.
An insecure group leader may try to assert power by getting everyone in his/her crowd to mock an outsider.
When dealing with a scapegoat, it’s important not to play both sides of the fence, being compassionate to those who are being isolated while giving support and approval to the bullies who are tormenting them.
Let the bullies know how angry you are about what they are doing.

There are a few things to keep in mind if you want to get perfect shots while camping.
Take pictures of your family.
Nature shots can be really nice, but you'll be looking at those old family camp photos in ten years.
Bring extra batteries.
Most cameras use really special batteries and you may not be able to find them at a camp store.
Temperature can affect your batteries and film.
If you are taking pictures in chilly weather, your batteries may die.
Don't throw them away.
Just warm them up and you'll be ready to shoot again.
Film does not like heat so try to keep your film in a cool spot.
You can’t take too many pictures, so bring lots of film.

While we're traveling, we normally spend only a second looking at everyday objects.
The day races past us without our really being aware of it.
The average time we spend looking at things has been steadily decreasing during the last fifty years.
We say that the world is going faster, but that might be because we are perceiving it faster.
Just try looking at objects for at least five seconds.
You can do this when you're walking or looking out of the car.
You'll find that five seconds is a long time.
This slight increase in the time we take to observe things can increase our passion for life and the quality of life.

Some years ago, Fortune magazine conducted a survey of many of the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies.
The goal was to try to find traits that these successful people had in common.
Surprising to say, there weren't many! Some of these top executives had gone to excellent universities, others not.
Some brought years of experience to their jobs, while others had enjoyed a quicker rise to success.
One of the few things they shared was that, along the way, they had each experienced a major career setback.
Most of them, in fact, had been fired from at least one job.
Understandably, none of them at the time felt they had been treated fairly.
Dwelling on life's unfairness and cruelties will not make your life better.
Those CEOs learned to move beyond setbacks.
We might even conclude that, without confrontation with negative events, they would not be where they are today.

Can background music affect our impressions toward a product?
To answer that question, a group of researchers conducted a study.
Subjects in the study were shown slides of light blue or beige pens.
At the same time they looked at the pens, they heard either pleasant or unpleasant music.
Later they were told to choose one of the pens as a gift.
The majority of them chose the pen they had looked at while they were listening to pleasant background music.

I entered the old, red brick house.
As I walked through the creaky oak door, the light barely crept through the dirty old windowpanes.
Slowly, I moved into the once-lively living room.
While I reached for the light switch, the soft wisp of a spider’s web brushed against my hand.
The smell and taste of dust were thick in the air.
The gray, crushed velvet furniture was covered with thick, clear, plastic sheets.
The white walls and ceiling were now a dull, dingy gray, and there were little balls of dust about the floor.
Hearing nothing except my own heartbeat, I felt the emptiness crash out loud and hard.

While their attempt to protect young minds from being harmed is praiseworthy, it does seem a bit misguided in this case.
Yes, Rowling's books do contain supernatural creatures.
And, yes, there are such things as witchcraft and magic.
But such fantasy elements are part of long tradition of children's literature.
Rowling rightly belongs in the superb company of writers,
all of whom used supernatural elements to attract their youthful readers.

The world religions of Christianity and Islam definitely share some similarities, but they also differ in significant ways.
Both worship one god.
Both believe Jerusalem to be a holy city, and both teach that one's fate after death is decided on a day of judgement.
The two religions, however, differ when it comes to their central teacher of prophecy.
For Christians, that figure is Jesus.
For Muslims, that figure is Muhammad.
Christianity and Islam also worship different sacred works.
The sacred text at the center of Christianity is the Bible, while the Koran is the holy book of Islam.

Frequent repetition of positive experiences can change your self-concept in a dramatic and positive manner.
One major difference between people with a low level of self-respect and those with a high level is the type of memories they choose to recall.
People with a low level usually think over negative experiences
while people with a high level spend their time recalling and enjoying positive memories.
Set aside five to ten minutes a day to recall positive things and success you have achieved.
As you recall each positive experience, compliment yourself on your success.
Continue with this exercise until it is easy to recall success and you feel good about your self-compliments.

When I was working in the yard, my four-year-old son, Tommy, came running over to me.
He asked me to get his ball out of a hole.
He said that the ball had rolled into the hole while playing soccer in the driveway.
I tried to reach my hand for it but the hole was too deep.
I brought a long stick, but it was not helpful.
I said to my son, “I'm sorry, but there seems to be no way to get it out.”
Then my son said, “Why don't we float it out?”
We filled the hole with water and, to our great relief and delight, the ball floated to the top!

Hermit crabs occupy the empty shells of dead sea snails for protection while still retaining their mobility.
They are capable of discriminating among a selection of shells of various sizes and species,
and they choose the one that fits the body most closely.
Hermit crabs change shells as they grow, although in some marine environments a large enough variety of shells may not be available
and hermit crabs may be forced to occupy a smaller-than-ideal “house."
When a shell becomes too small for the hermit crab to occupy,
it will sometimes become aggressive and fight other hermit crabs to gain a more comfortable one.

That can be answered at two levels.
An evolutionary biologist would tell you that it is because women get evolutionary bonus points from living long enough to help bring up the grandchildren.
Men, by contrast, wear themselves out competing for the right to procreate in the first place.
That is probably true, but not much help to the medical profession.
However, a group of researchers has just come up with a medically useful answer.
It is that while 70-year-old men have the hearts of 70-year-olds, those of their female peers resemble the hearts of 20-year-olds.

Any traveler who is a fan of modern art will want to drop by the very successful Saatchi Gallery while visiting London.
The gallery owes a lot of its popularity to the controversy that its works have generated in recent years.
Among the works on display there, visitors can see Hirst's dead animals in large glass tanks, and Emin's untidy bed, which she sold to the gallery for £150,000.
These works have provoked a lot of debates on what art actually is.
Some people might think these works are not even art, but they certainly make viewers think and react.

On her second birthday, Jane was given a toy chimpanzee named Jubilee.
Jubilee was named after a baby chimp in the London Zoo and seemed to foretell the course Jane's life would take.
From an early age, Jane was fascinated by animals and animal stories.
By the age of 10, she began to talk about going to Africa to live among the animals there.
As a young woman, Jane attended secretarial school and then worked for a documentary film-maker for a while.
When a friend invited her to visit Kenya, she worked as a waitress to earn the fare to get there by boat.
Finally, at 23, her childhood dream was realized.

Several months later, the master took the boy to his first tournament.
Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches.
The third match proved to be more difficult, but the boy used his one move to win the match.
Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals.
This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced.
For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched but he went on with his match.
When his opponent made a critical mistake, the boy used his move to pin him.
The boy had won the match and the tournament.
He was the champion.

I recently had an encounter with a dog owner letting his large German shepherd run free around the park.
For the third time in the last month, I asked the man to restrain the dog while I ran past with my leashed dog, and he refused.
Another man who regularly plays with his dog simply stares when I ask him to restrain his dog.
Dog owners like these two men usually say their dogs are “safe.” But I've seen apparent “hellos” escalate into vicious fights between two “nice dogs.” Dog fights are brutal and bloody affairs impossible to break up without risking serious injury.
I was seriously bitten some years ago breaking up a fight between my dog and an unleashed dog, and had to have stitches and a rabies shot as a result.

In the 1700's and 1800's, the men's role included earning an income to support a family and working in the farms,
while the female's role included the responsibility to have and to care for children, running a household and assisting a husband in farm labor.
Running a household and caring for children was considered a “full-time" job.
Children were taught their roles when they were very young.
Boys were shown how to farm and provide for their future families' as they attended school.
Girls learned how to do the household chores and received only the very basic education.
They were taught how to be wives and mothers.

For these same reasons, the average American would be surprised if a seated passenger offered to hold her bag while she was standing.
According to our American standards, we'd have to politely refuse such an offer, believing that it would unfairly inconvenience the sitter,
that it was meant as a polite gesture, and not a genuine offer.
Another point to consider is that Americans who live in big cities have keen senses of suspicion about other people.

After putting in a full day's work, I am exhausted.
Carrying around those extra pounds makes it difficult to stay on my feet, but I can't quit work because I need the money.
I wonder how these men would feel if THEIR pregnant wives had to stand and hang on to a strap while other men sat.

There is one thing which we do every time we read, whether we are aware of it or not: we come into contact with the personality of the writer.
We enlarge our acquaintance, and by so doing we enter farther into life, and however little we may meant to, we enlarge our own personality, at least if the writer whose book we are reading himself possesses a personality of any value at all.
