[比較] hit, beat, knock, punch, slap, strike, stroke
hit는 「단번」의 타격을 뜻하나, beat는 계속(연속)적인 타격을 암시하는 이외에도 「타격을 가하다; 타격을 가해서 상처를 입히다」는 뜻으로 쓰이는 경우, hit와 달리 human noun이 주어, 목적어가 된다.
He hit the ball with a bat./ The men beat him unmercifully.
strike는 「(상당한 힘을 가하여) 치다, 때리다」는 뜻으로, 「타격」과 관련해서 가장 일반적으로 쓰이는 말이고 hit보다 감정적 의미를 강하게 반영한다.
He struck his enemy on the mouth.
strike와 혼동되기 쉬운 낱말에 stroke가 있는데, stroke는 「쓰다듬다」란 뜻이다.
She stroked the cat.
knock에는 「타격을 가하고 동시에 소리를 내게 하다」는 뜻과 「타격을 가하여 상대방을 쓰러뜨리다」는 뜻이 있다.
He knocked on the door./ The car knocked the old man down.
pat은「어깨 등을 가볍게 두드리다」는 뜻으로 쓰이는 낱말이다. punch는 「주먹」으로 친다는 뜻이고 slap은 「손바닥」으로 친다는 뜻을 갖는다.

「가볍게 빨리 두드리다」는 뜻으로는 rap이 있고, 특히 「손이나 발로 가볍게 빠른 속 도로 두드린다」는 뜻으로는 tap이 있다.

The teacher tapped her fingers on the desk impatiently.
One day, a poor man named Scott, came to visit Taylor.
He said, “Taylor, I need your help. I am a poor man, a man with no money.”
Taylor looked at him kindly and answered, “I'll help you. Tell me what's wrong.”
Scott said, “Yesterday I stopped in front of the door of a restaurant.
The restaurant belonged to a rich man.
I only smelled the food.
However, he wanted me to pay him for the food.
And he called the judge.
The judge said I must go to the court today.
Please Taylor, can you help me?”
In the court the rich man began shouting angrily at Scott.
And the judge asked Scott to pay him right now.
Taylor stepped forward and then said, “This poor man is my elder brother. I will pay you instead.”
After he heard this, the rich man smiled, thinking about his payment.
Then Taylor took a bag of money from his belt, a bag of copper coins.
He bent down next to the rich man and shook the bag.
“Listen. Do you hear this sound?” said he.
“Of course I hear it,” shouted the rich man impatiently.
“Well, then,” answered Taylor, “the problem is solved. The debt is paid.
My brother has smelled your food, and you have heard his money.”
The poor man was saved.

그리고는 판사를 불렀어요.
그 판사는 내가 오늘 법정에 가야 한다는 겁니다.
Taylor씨, 나 좀 도와줄 수 있겠어요?”
법정에서 그 부자는 Scott를 향해 화를 내며 소리를 치기 시작하였다.
그리고 판사는 그에게 당장 음식값을 지불하라고 하였다.
Taylor는 앞으로 걸어 나와서 “이 불쌍한 사람은 나의 형이오. 내가 대신 갚아주겠소”라고 말하였다.
부자는 이 말을 듣고 나서 음식값 받을 것을 생각하며 미소를 지었다.
그때, Taylor는 허리춤에서 구리 동전이 든 돈주머니를 꺼냈다.
그는 부자 옆에서 몸을 구부리고 그 돈주머니를 흔들었다.
그는 “들으시오. 이 소리 듣고 있소?”라고 말했다.
그 부자는 “물론, 듣고 있소.”라고 성급하게 외쳤다.
Taylor는 “자, 그럼, 문제는 해결되었군요. 빚진 것 다 갚았소.
내 형은 당신의 음식 냄새를 맡았고, 당신은 형의 돈 소리를 들었소.”
(그렇게 해서) 그 불쌍한 남자는 곤경에서 벗어났다.
Once a troop of monkeys came to the lake, led by their king.

He was suspicious and worried.

하지만 그들은 기강이 잘 잡혀있어서 왕의 명령을 철저히 따랐다.
A schoolgirl went to a famous musician's concert. The concert lasted for
an hour. When it was over, she applauded his passionate performance and
clapped for a long time. Then at the stage door the girl asked the
violinist for his autograph. "Sorry, not now." he replied impatiently,
"My hands are tired." "Instead of taking offense, the schoolgirl
replied, "My hands are tired, too ! " This witty remark defeated the
musician. So she got the autograph, and the two parted good friends !

말했다. 여학생은 화내기 보다는에 "제 손도 피곤해요!"라고 대꾸했다. 이
재치있는 말이 음악가의 마음을 감동시켰다. 그래서 그녀는 사인을 받았고, 그
두 사람은 좋은 친구로 헤어졌다.

방학때라 그런지 거의가 학생이었다. 저만치 매표소옆에서 Jill이
시계를 들여다 보며 날 보면 죽여버리겠다는 듯이 입술을 깨물고
있는 것이 보였다. 한숨이 나왔다. 또 잔소리 꽤나 듣게 생겼다.
다음부턴 약속시간에 늦지 않겠다고 손이 발이 되게 빌었다.
거짓말이라면 벼락을 맞을 거라고 해도 믿질 않았다. 2회는 벌써
시작해서 들여보내주질 않았다. 영화도 못보고… 아 짜증난다.
다음 부턴 계획을 철저히 세워야지… 자자.
Most of those in line looked like students enjoying their
vacation. Further up the road, I could see Jill in front of
the ticket box looking at her watch impatiently and biting
her lips as if to swear she would kill me. I sighed. I
definitely knew what was about to come my way. Jill wouldn't
stop yelling and grumbling. I promised her not to be late
again and begged for mercy, like a dog. I said God would
strike me down if I was lying, but she wouldn't believe me.
The second showing of the movie had already started and we
were denied admission. I had a real hell of a day. Plan ahead

생각이 통하는 부분이 많습니다. "거짓말이면 벼락맞는다"는 말입니다.
7. The second showing of the movie: 영화 회수를 말할 때
showing을 씁니다.
8. We were denied admission: 입장이 중단됐다는 말이지요. 접근
금지였다고 하면,

9. Hell of a day: Hell of something은 이중의 뜻을 같습니다.
상황에 따라 "정말 거지같은"의 뜻이기도 하지만 어떨 때는 "정말
죽여주는"의 뜻이기도 합니다.

이럴 때는 상황으로 미루어 볼 때, 죽여주는 여자를 만났다는 말이겠지요.
