I'm tickled to death to be here this evening라고 말했는데
통역가가 이 말을 어떻게 통역해야 할 지 몰라서 그대로
'내가 오늘 저녁 여기 왔기 때문에 죽을 때 까지 난
가려워서 긁게 될 것입니다.'라고 통역을 했다.
정말 말도 안되지만 be tickled to death란 idiom(관용구)를
모르면 이렇게 밖에 해석을 할 수밖에 없을 것이다.
be tickled to death는 be very pleased 또는 be very happy와
같은 뜻이다. 글자 그대로 해석하면 '너무 간지러워서 죽는다'는
뜻인데 '매우 기쁘다'는 뜻이 된다. 정말 말도 안되는 말이지만
하여튼 미국에서 많이 쓰이는 표현이니깐 눈물을 머금고 알아둘
수밖에 없다. to death대신 pink를 써서 be tickled pink라고도
한다. 물론 I'm dying to see her라고 한국에서 쓰는 '죽겠다'란
표현도 쓴다. This heat wave is murder 또는
The recession is killing us 등등 '죽겠다' 란 표현도 많이 있다.
He went out like a light 그는 잠자러 갔다
* go out like a light는 '빨리 잠들다' '의식을 잃다'는 뜻의
idiom이다. 위의 표현을 그대로 해석해 보면 '번개 같이 나갔다'
'재빨리 나가다'로 글자 그대로 해석할 수밖에 없으므로 이런
말을 들을 때 난감해 질 수밖에 없다. 다시 한 번 이야기 하면
영어가 어려운 것이 단어 그대로 해석하면 엉뚱한 뜻이 되어
버리는 숙어들이 상당히 많기 때문에 배우기 힘든 것이다.
go out like a light를 '기절하다'라고 했는데 pass out과
faint도 같은 뜻이다. 반대로 기절했다가 '의식을 회복하다'는
것은 come to라고 한다. come to만으로 '의식을 되찾다'는 뜻이 된다.
- 자네는 일을 너무 많이 하네
한국어가 되어 있는 말에 '오버워크' over work라는 것이 있는데, 이것을
사용하면 좋겠지만 overwork oneself라는 용어를 모르면 올바른 사용은
못 한다. 여기서는 go를 사용한 구어적인 표현으로 on the go라는 것을
익혀 주기 바란다. 이것은 '틀림없이 활동하고 있는' 또는 '일을 하다'
라는 의미의 idiom으로서 분주하게 뛰어다니며잠시도 앉아 있지 않는 모
습을 연상케 한다.

“Hold your horses," is an English idiom which dates back to the 19th century.
