[比較] take, seize, grasp, clutch, snatch, grab
take the lamp from the table
take a city
take the opportunity/ take the temperature of a room by observing the thermometer/ take a bath/ take a rest
He seized the gun from the robber./ The hungry children seized the food that was offered them.
seize an opportunity/ seize the attention of the crowd
seize the throne
The character of Louis ⅩⅢ is difficult to seize, for it comprised qualities hardly ever combined in one man.(루이 13세의 성격을 파악하기 어려운 것은, 일찍이 어떤 개인에게도 결합된 적이 없었던 여러 자질들을 포함하고 있었기 때문이다.
Pneumonia seized him in his thirty-fifth year.
The hawk grasped the fowl with its talons.(매는 발톱으로 새를 꽉 잡았다.)
grasp an idea
The child clutched his mother's hand./ She clutched his hand in terror./ I clutched desperately at the twigs as I fell.
snatch a purse/ snatch a kiss
snatch a child from the flames/ He snatched the book from her hand.
grab all the food from the table/ grab power/ The child grabbed all the candy.

* like the idea of --하는 것을 좋아하다
- He didn't like the idea of moving into another city.

What is your idea of current political situation?

Opposing the idea of an extension, Rep. Suh Chung-won, floor
leader of the ruling New Korea Party, cited the absence of a
precedence of extending a special parliamentary investigation.

After six months, I couldn't see the value in it.
I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out.
And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life.

But the decisive issue here should not be saving money but preserving
privacy and the security of sensitive information. Senator Paul Simon,
Democrat of Illinois, and Representative Thomas Davis, Republican of
Virginia, unsuccessfully tried to block the transfer of responsibility. They
rightly questioned whether the new company would enjoy the confidence
of state and local authorities and wondered how the private entity will
be policed for compliance with Federal privacy laws. Mixing profits
and privacy is a bad idea.

If they fail to do this, they will find it increasingly difficult to
survive, especially as the number of students entering college is soon
expected to start decreasing. The education liberalization scheme, with its
spurring of lethargic school foundations to expand their investment in
education, a sort of service industry, is thus a good idea.

There could be no doubt that these long-suffering people were really going to challenge the cruel Empire of Japan.
Although success seemed impossible, I felt honored to be enlisted in the great adventure.
Arriving at Pagoda Park at about 2 p.m., I took up a good position on the opposite side of the street, ready for action.
A steady stream of students was flowing into the park, passing directly in front of the four or five Japanese police.
They had no idea of the purpose of the student gathering.
Suddenly there was a tremendous noise as the suppressed emotions of ten years were released in a deafening shout of “Manse.”
I took snapshots as fast as possible, but as the students were running right at the camera, I knew that the pictures would be disappointing.

A woman has an idea for a small business to lift her and her family out of poverty.
She needs a little money to begin the business.
She goes to a bank to borrow the money, and a banker interviews her.
At this bank, the borrower must meet three necessary conditions: honesty, capacity, and property.
That is, if this woman wants to borrow money from the bank, she must show that she is honest, is able to run her business, and owns something valuable.

Most rockets are used just once, then thrown away.
The space shuttle is different; it takes off like a rocket, enters space as a spacecraft, and then returns and lands on a runway like an aircraft.
The idea was to make space-flight cheaper, but the results have been disappointing.
To put the space shuttle into orbit costs up to $250 million, no less than a standard rocket.
The popular dream of ordinary people paying for a space ride is still many years away.

Is it possible to measure beauty?
Well, the ancient Greeks believed that all beauty could be explained with math and used a system to find what they called the “Golden Ratio.”
They found it by drawing lines between key points of a beautiful object and making calculations.
They believed that all beautiful things share the same ratio.
This idea is still popular today.
An American researcher carefully measured thousands of faces and was able to produce a “Universal Beauty Mask” based on this Golden Ratio.
According to him, how closely the mask fits can show how beautiful you are.

Imagine you were asked to work overtime and you didn't want to do it.
Then you were told you would get paid twice as much money.
You would probably become more cooperative.
This idea also works with children.
A few years ago, a child of mine wouldn't brush her teeth before going to bed.
Nothing we did could make her change her mind.
Then, my parenting class teacher recommended that I should give her rewards.
So I used this simple phrase, which worked wonders:
“If you go and brush your teeth now, we will have time to read three stories instead of just one.”
Whenever she heard it, she would jump up and brush her teeth right away.

The boomerang, a light, thin, and well-balanced missile, was the very first Australian invention.
It could be thrown into the air to imitate a hawk, causing birds to get frightened and fly into nets where they were caught.
However, boomerangs were mostly used in competitions between native tribes.
The idea was to see who could make the boomerang do the most circles in flight before it returned to the thrower's feet.
Today the boomerang is used by college lecturers to demonstrate the principles of aerodynamics.

On the other hand, people in Los Angeles have no idea of directions or distances on the map.
They measure distance in time.
They might answer, “I guess it’s about five minutes from here.”

Children who are old enough to understand the idea of schedules and chores can understand the needs of your home business.
Explain to your children that you do your work at home so that you can be near them when they need you.
But also be sure they understand that you must do your work so that you will have the money necessary to keep your house, feed the family, and provide them with money for entertainment.
Once your children understand the necessity of your work, then outline a work schedule and explain it to them.
Then make sure they understand that between hours x and y, you will be doing work, and then tell them to respect your schedule.

The first year of my college was terrible for me.
I didn't know how to handle myself.
I had a growing fear that I might flunk out.
The turnaround came one day during my second semester, on a day when my English professor was returning some essay papers to the class.
She held mine up, and I could see all the red marks and comments she had put on it.
I thought, “Oh, what is she going to do? Criticize my work in front of all these other students?”
Instead, she said, “Your grammar and spelling need a lot of work, Arthur, but this is an example of a very well-organized paper.”
Surely she had no idea what she had done for me.
She had blessed me with an affirmation.
She had shown me I could do something.

When my grandmother began to have problems in seeing, hearing and walking, a number of family meetings were held.
We discussed what we should do for her.
We talked of placing her in a nursing home, but that idea was quickly given up.
Although my grandmother would be with more people of her own age, she would see even less of her family, and that would break her heart.
Mother would not allow her own mother to grow old and weak in a strange place.
She said, “I will not let Grandmother end up in a nursing home,”
and I admire my mother greatly for this decision.
It was not an easy decision for her.
When so many others are running away from the problem of what they should do about their old parents, my mother stands out remarkably.

She was born in England in 1821, and emigrated to New York City.
One day she decided that she wanted to become a doctor.
That was almost impossible for a woman in the middle of the nineteenth century.
After writing many letters seeking admission to medical schools, she was finally accepted by a medical school in Philadelphia.
After graduating from the medical school in 1849, she wanted to become a surgeon.
Unfortunately a serious eye infection forced her to abandon the idea.
She found it difficult to start her own practice because she was a woman.
In 1857 she and her sister, also a doctor, along with another female doctor, managed to open a new hospital, the first for women and children.
Besides being the first female doctor and founding her own hospital, she also established the first medical school for women.

Talk of intelligent life on other planets was once the stuff of science fiction or idle speculation.
Recently, however, many astronomers have promoted the view that civilizations may be scattered among the stars like grains of sand.
The idea has inspired countless novels, movies, and television shows,
but has also led to a long and serious scientific search, using huge dish antennas that scan the sky for faint radio signals coming from intelligent aliens.

Will you have good luck if you carry a silver dollar?
Many people believe that carrying a certain coin can bring good luck.
Sometimes women wear a coin on a bracelet for luck.
A coin with a hole in it is supposed to be especially lucky in some countries.
This idea got started long ago, before coins were used.
People believed that a shell or a stone with a hole in it could keep away evil spirits.
Coins with a hole would do the same.
There are many other beliefs about how money can bring good luck:
a jar of pennies in the kitchen will bring good luck.
A coin in the bride's shoe at a wedding will lead to a happy marriage.

Several factors contribute to the poverty prevalent in some Latin American countries.
First of all, many people there are poor as a result of overpopulation.
Some traditions still strong in Latin America are conducive to a high birth rate.
In addition to religious beliefs and the common idea that there will always be food on the table for an extra mouth,
people continue to feel that many children can provide more help in the fields or family business as well as more support later for elderly parents.
A second factor causing poverty in Latin America is governmental corruption.
Many countries are run by dictators who act according to their own interests.

College is totally different from high school because you are on your own.
I cannot stress too much about the idea of learning independence.
You discover so much about yourself in college.
There is no one to walk you to class.
You need to motivate yourself because there is no one to make you do your schoolwork, set your schedule, or get to class on time.
You gain a better sense of self and find yourself maturing when you are away from home.

When Amelia, one of my dearest friends, was ninety-nine, I, not knowing if she would live to be one hundred,
decided to ask the “big” question that is usually reserved for people who reach the age of one hundred.
I asked, “To what do you attribute your longevity?”
The usual answers we hear to that question are, “I didn't drink,” “I minded my own business,” and the like.
I had no idea what this healthy little ninety-nine-year-old would say.
What she said was profound.
It caused me to sit up and take notice: I have learned how not to be afraid.
Wow! What a statement! I realized―yes, this woman is fearless!
She didn't hide away at home and kept on moving out into the world despite the risks.

Well, my dad has gone above and beyond the call of duty for me.
This past weekend, my dad bought a new car.
The car is in his name and under his insurance, but I'll be the one driving it.
I didn't ask him to do that for me; he came up with the idea on his own.
I am so thankful that he did.
Of course, I'll have to make the payments.
The first one isn't due until the end of August.
Hopefully, I'll have a job by then.
Or, at least, I will be able to collect my unemployment benefits.
The car is a 2005 Cheetah Cobalt.
I love everything about my car, especially its color.

After the fall of the medieval world view, we in the west suddenly became aware that we lived in a totally unknown universe.
In attempting to understand the nature of this universe we knew we had to somehow separate fact from superstition.
In this regard we scientists assumed a particular attitude known as scientific skepticism, which in effect demands solid evidence for any new assertion about how the world works.
Before we would believe anything, we wanted evidence that could be seen and grabbed with the hands.
Any idea that couldn't be proved in some physical way was systematically rejected.

Teacher: Good for You.
I'm not against using bicycles.
Actually, I'm for it.
I still find your idea out of the question, though.
What I'm saying is we can't expect everyone to bike to work or school.

There is plenty of evidence to support this idea.
For example, the shape of an elephant's head is similar to a whale's.
Also, elephants are excellent swimmers.

The global information market will be huge and will combine all the various ways human goods, services, and ideas are exchanged.
On a practical level, this will give you broader choices about most things, including how you earn and invest, what you buy and how much you pay for it, who your friends are and how you spend your time with them, and where and how securely you and your family live.
Your workplace and your idea of what it means to be "educated" will be transformed, perhaps almost beyond recognition.
Your sense of identity, of who you are and where you belong, may open up considerably.
In short, just about everything will be done differently.
I can hardly wait for this tomorrow, and I'm doing what I can to help make it happen.

They try to give us the "feel of the idea" and the "experience beneath the idea."

Thus the idea of the earth as the center of the universe was destroyed.

Five years later, the heads of all the nations in the European Community
conferred on Monnet the title of Honorary Citizen of Europe - the only man ever to
be so honored. And for good reason. His was a noble idea - to unite the nations of
Europe in the service of peace and worldwide cooperation. And, to a remarkable
degree, his vision has triumphed.

In his innocence, man held his own special planet to be the center of the starry
universe until Copernicus, 431 years ago, dared to challenge this dogma. The earth
moves around the sun, he said, not vice versa. It was a profound and troubling idea.
Yet it was still far from the whole truth, for it kept the sun at the center of things.
And that misconception persisted in the minds of most until the coming of
photography and the large telescopes of the 20th century.

First, you should make a preliminary survey of each book to get a general idea of
what the book contains.

The first is the mistaken idea that schools exist principally to train boys and
girls to be sociable, "integrated with their group," "equipped with the skills of
social living,""adjusted to family and community cooperation."Obviously that is one
of the aims of schooling.

*conception 개념 idea or plan that takes place in the mind:
I have no conception of what you mean.

Most people try to select occupations that will result in large incomes.
This attitude of affluence results from the demands of society.
One must have enough money to pay the rent and to buy food.
Seldom does the middle class American dare to challenge the idea that
money and glory are the most important goals in his life.
Also, he rarely has the courage to execute a job simply because he
likes the work.

*myth 잘못된 생각 a widely believed but false story or idea:
the myth of male superiority

allegory N. representation of an abstract idea concretely.
Orwell's "Animal Farm" is an allegory which uses a farm to illustrate philosophical ideas.

don't we practice those dialogues together?
B:Good idea. That just might help.
**
Leaming any~. [When you leam any
languages, you have to take a lot of effort]의 뜻이다.
How
about practicing~?
Good idea는 That's a good idea가 원 표현이다. 또한 That just might help는

A:I'm in a bad mood now.
B:Let's go and have a coffee.
A:I don't feel Like it.
B:I know how you feel. How about going for a drive?
A:It's a great idea. That's really very kind of you.
B:Never mind.

I don't feel like cracking a joke.

The lecture will give the people attending a general idea of the problems
involved. A more thorough coverage would call for a far more elaborate
curriculum as well as time.

I have asked Mr. Myung-joon Kim, President, Seoul Motor Co., to make a
short speech on behalf of our guests. Mr. Kim has been a valued friend
and advisor to me for over 20 years. I think his words will echo the
sentiments of all our supporters. The idea is to structure the
reception so that we will have more time for social interaction.
I do hope that you will be able to spare the time to share this
occasion with us.

My wife and I are now planning a small cocktail and dinner party at
our home from 4:00 to around 9:00 P.M. on May 6. Our idea is to share
the beauty of our wisteria tree, which we expect to be in full bloom at
that time, with a few of our closest friends.
We wonder if you and your dear wife could find the time to join us.

What do you think of his idea?

Men of millions are possessed with the idea.

That idea is out of date.

The idea of achieving security through an arms race is a false belief.
It rose out of the fact that America first produced and used an atomic
bomb to win World WarⅡ. Some people still believe that they can achieve
security by showing force. But military build-up is costly, and often
leads to greater destruction. What is the use of security if everything
is destroyed? Therefore, instead of seeking security through means of
mass destruction, we should achieve it through global understanding and
cooperation before it is too late.

At Jim's invitation the prince and the princess attended the event.
Seven satellites beamed the event to over one hundred countries.
Millions of people, watching Jim's concert on television, were asked to
phone in pledges of money to give to African relief. Jim raised over one
hundred million dollars to provide relief for the drought victims in
Africa. jim's idea paid off.

Recognizing the healing power of humor, many hospitals are starting to
take laughing matters seriously. For example, some doctors wheel around a
`laughmobile' cart. It is stocked with a variety of humorous books and
monologues recorded by famous comedians. This idea has met with
considerable success. So it seems that at least to the health profession,
laughter is no joke.

By the time I started middle school, I realized that most of my fellow
students had the idea that we Asian students are all smart. It's true
that some are. But what about those of us who aren't? Having to act like
a brain can be a pain. My classmates come to me for answers, but I
sometimes can't help them. Then they look at me strangely. If I were a
genius, I would not mind being treated like one. But since I am not, I
do.
