I would rather die than do such a mean thing.

I would rather be able to appreciate things
I cannot have than have things I am not able to appreciate.
-Elbert Hubbard

→ 잘하고(못하고)있다: be good(poor) at; be strong(weak) in; (사물을 주어로 해서) be in(out of) one's line
→ 내 경험에서 말한다면: in my experience; so far as I know from my experience
It is not necessarily so; It is not always the case
I should rather say (that)
→ 관계가 깊다: be closely connected (what); have a close relationship (to)
(ANS) I liked both English and mathematics. Though they say (that) those who are good at foreign languages are poor at mathematics, and that the reverse is also true, it is not necessarily so in my experience. I would rather say (that) these two faculties are closely connected with each other.

* fly
비행기로 가다 (=to travel by aircraft)
-- Would you rather fly or take a bus?
-- I'll never fly with Northwest again.

``I don't want public opinion divided by a prolonged trial. I
would rather see everything settled 1)once and for all with my
sacrifice,'' Chun was quoted as saying by a lawyer on the defense
team.
1)once and for all

...역례...Let me have something simple.
I would rather have light food.

I prefer a big lunch to a big dinner.
= I prefer a large lunch to a large dinner.
= I would rather have a big lunch that a big dinner.

I would rather be an optimist than a perssimist.
= I'd like have oppositive rather than negative up look.
= Every cloud has silver lighting.

I would rather have a poor and comely wife than a rich and homely one.

Before our two teens went out with friends for the evening, my husband and I would negotiate a reasonable curfew for their return.
Instead of waiting up for them past our own bedtime, we would set our alarm to ring at their curfew time.
If they were late and the alarm woke us up, we would know that they missed their curfew.
We always encouraged them to call us if they were going to be late.
We preferred waking up to their voice on the phone rather than being startled by the alarm going off and not knowing where they were.

I went to a large university well-known for its basketball team.
Most of the time when I’m asked where I went to school, people recite its basketball statistics rather than its academic excellence.
It is seldom that I hear someone say, “Oh, your university has an excellent library!”
Universities waste far too much money and attention on sports activities, often doing harm to academic programs.
In my opinion, however, only a small portion of students are on athletic teams, yet the majority of students use the university library.
Universities need to give more money to the library than to sports activities.
This would greatly benefit the university libraries with new books and new computer equipment.

By this time, several people were gawking, amazed that a total stranger would give someone $1.29.
Realizing that I meant what I said, the lady asked for my address so she could pay back the $1.29.
Rather than do that, I asked that she repay me by someday helping someone in need as I had helped her.
The transaction was completed, and the lady hurriedly exited.
I then asked the clerk for my change, since I had given her $2.
Well, apparently, she was so rattled that she gave the change to the lady who has just left.

The most serious threat to a person's progress arises from his efforts to
keep safe in his job, to see to it that he doesn't make mistakes.
Sometimes when we adopt "safe" attitudes we tell ourselves that we don't
disagree with the boss because we are loyal to him and the organization.
Far be it from me to belittle loyalty, but I would rather have a little
disagreement. I'd rather have someone give me an argument. Let us
remember that two men in an organization think exactly alike, we can
get along without one of them.

It therefore came as a surprise to hear of your rather early retirement
from day-to-day management. However, it was reassuring to know that you
would remain on the board of directors as deputy chairman after
Janyary.

I would rather die than submit.

I greatly fear your presence would rather increase then.

It would be a shame.
I'd rather die than living in shame.

at the reverse is also true, it is not
necessarily so in my experience. I would rather say (that)
these two faculties are closely connected with each other.
B. English and mathematics were my favorite subjects. It is
said that a man who has a talent for languages is not
talented at mathematics and that the reverse is also true [or
vice versa]. So far as I know from my experience, however,
this is not the case. It would be truer to say that the
ability in one and the ability in the other have a close
relationship to each other.
(1) 잘하고 (못하고) 있다: be good (poor) at; be strong (weak)
in; (사물을 주어로 해서) be in (out of) one's line
(2) 나의 경험에서 말한다면: in my experience; so far as I
know from my experience
It is not necessarily so; It
is not always the case
I should rather say (that)
(5) 관계가 깊다: be closely connected (with); have a close
relationship (to)
That the reverse is also true is one of the logical
propositions.
Logically speaking, we can say that converse are not always
true.
Turn the screw the other way round [or about].
He disliked me, and vice versa.

Mr. West, I presume?
I'm pleased to meet
you. Nice to meet you. How do you do?
「12시간의 비행」이라고 하는 a 12-hour flight는 a flight 속에
Dialogue
MEETING AT THE AIRPORT (1)
Mr. Lee: Excuse me, Mr. John West, I presume?
Mr. West: Yes. Are you Mr. Lee?
Mr. Lee: Yes. I'm Lee Chul-su of Alpha Electric. Welcome to
Korea. I'm pleased to meet you.
Mr. West: I'm pleased to meet you too, Mr. Lee.
Mr. Lee: It's rather late, so perhaps you would like to go to
your hotel straight away.
Mr. West: Yes, I'm rather tired after a 12-hour flight.
Mr. Lee: I've got my car in the parking lot, so let me take
you to your hotel. Have you got your baggage? Is that all you
have?
Mr. West: Yes, that's right.
Mr. Lee: I'll carry one for you.
Mr. West: That's very kind of you.
어려우면 주저하지 말고 I beg your pardon? Will you
speak more slowly?

Rather, I think it would be better to rent it without registering and sell it freely as needed.

Kim Yu-kyum, divisional manager of research at Cape Investment & Securities, said, "I would have been better if it was faster in time," adding, "The market will have a clear message only when the government shows an active attitude of 'creating more funds if necessary' rather than finalizing the size of the securities market stabilization funds."

"We actually think the name means a lot," said Winebaum, who ran Walt
Disney Co.'s Web business before starting Ecompanies earlier this year
with Sky Dayton, the founder of Earthlink Network, an Internet service
provider. "It captures what I think we're building," he added. "I would
rather have it like that than trying to spend a lot to figure out what
the brand stands for."

◆ prefer, would rather
I prefer listening to music to watching TV.
I'd rather listen to music than watch TV. 'd rather
그리고, 만일 특정한 선택에 대해 말할 땐, would rather은 to 부정사를 수반한 would prefer to를 쓸 수 있어요.
I'd / you'd / he'd / she'd / we'd / they'd rather?
Would you like to go out for dinner tonight? ~ No, I think I'd rather eat at home / I'd prefer to eat at home.
Would you rather drink beer or wine with the curry ~ I'd rather drink beer. What about you?
They'd rather have the strawberries by themselves, but I'd prefer to have them with cream.
여러분들은 would rather이 to 부정사를 수반하지 않는 반면에 prefer requires to + infinitive로 to 부정사가 수반된다는 사실을 염두에 두셨으리라 생각됩니다. Would rather (but not would prefer to)의 다른 중요한 용법이 한 가지 더 있습니다.
Shall we go out for dinner tonight? ~ No, I'd rather we ate at home, if you don't mind.
Shall I write to Harry and tell him that we've sold the car? ~ I'd rather you didn't.
My mother would rather we caught the bus, rather than walk home after the party.
Rather than은 instead of의 뜻으로 쓰일 수 있습니다.
Rather than lose precious sleep discussing it now, I think we should go to bed and talk about it in the morning.
My mother would prefer us to email each other once a week, rather than spend half an hour on the phone every night.
My mother would rather we emailed each other once a week instead of spending half an hour on the phone every night. In fact, she insists on it. So we'd better do that, I suppose.

would rather / had better
'would rather' 는 차라리 ~을 택하겠다, 오히려 ~이 낫겠다 등 개인의 선호성이나 선택의 뉘앙스가 강하고,
'had better' 의 경우 형태는 비슷하지만 필요성, 당위성 또는 충고의 어감이 담겨있습니다. 예문을 통해 익혀보시죠.
* would rather ('d rather)
A : Would you like to go out for dinner tonight?
