English literature of Korea must be regarded as of Korean Sciences because it has been taught to Korean Language at least for forty years. As it is a completely koreanized science like electro engineering politics and library science, I believe it is quite natural for korean scholars to write about it in korean language for the easy understanding of Korean people. Translation without interpretation of footnotes on it is likely to be hard to understand. So it is sometimes rather convenient to read the source language text in itself. As a result translation seems less useful. We cannot make the foreign words ours just by changing them into Korean.

(ANS) Today we can hear lectures on the radio and also on TV. But if we stopped trying to know what we are ignorant of, what on earth would become of us?

A : I felt as if my heart would break when I saw my husband with her.
B : I can understand your feeling.

You are talking over my head.
* 미국인들이 쓰는 회화에서 You've lost me.
그러니까 I don't understand. 또는
I don't know what you are talking about. 또는
I don't get(or dig) it. 또는 I don't follow you.
You are talking over my head.
I don't follow you very well. 또는
Would you mind using simpler words?
This movie is over my head.
It's beyond me도 I don't understand.
I can't do it.

I don`t understand GenXers.

Please understand my mind. (X)
① Please try to understand what I'm saying.(제 말뜻을 이해해주세요.)
I hope you can understand me.(절 이해해주시길 바래요.)
I hope you don't misunderstand me.(오해하지 마셨으면 합니다.)
④ Please, consider my position.(제 입장을 고려해주세요.)

Fine,I understand.I'll do it .

Good! Do you feel refreshed?
S1 : How refreshing!
T : Tae-su! What are you eating during class?
Shame on you!
S2 : Sorry, but it's because I'm very sleepy.
I'm chewing gum to stay awake.
T : I understand, but it's not a good strategy.
Why don't you go and wash your face.
S2 : Thank you for your advice.
T : I'm happy that you have a good attitude.

S1 : What game is it today?
T : A guessing game. First of all, let's make teams. Any good idea?
S2 : Rocks-papers-scissors.
T : Anyone who wins is team "A." The others are team "B." Sounds good?
S1 : Why not?
T : Then, play rocks-papers-scissors with your partner. Are you finished?
S1 : Yes.
T : Now listen carefully to what I am saying and guess the word. Do you understand?
S1 : Of course. I'm sure I'll know the answer.
T : Great! Today team "A" won the guessing game 4 to 1. Congratulations!

S1 : Mr. Kim, this is math class.
T : I know. After second period, I have to go on an official trip. Because of this, English class and math class are being switched with each other. Do you understand?
S1 : What was that? Can you repeat what you said?
T : First period and third period are being switched around.
S2 : Mr. Kim, can you speak a little louder?

I beg your pardon.

I'm sorry but I can't hear you.

Would you mind speaking a little more slowly?
I can't follow you.
Please explain it in easier words.
Would you write it out for us on the chalkboard?

Is the meaning clear to you?
Is that clear?
Do you understand me?
Can you hear my voice now?
Do you understand what I mean?
I think you understand it now.
Am I speaking too fast? Shall I speak a little more slowly?

Are there any expressions you don't know the meanings of?
Is everything clear?
Are there any questions on this text?
Are there any points you are not sure of?
In line 5, you can see the word ‘biology’.
Let's look at the 7th line in more detail.
The meaning of this sentence is A.
I have a question. I don't understand the 5th line that well.

T : I will ask you some questions. If you know the answer, raise your hand.
Which sentence has the writer's main idea? (No answer.) Min-ho, can you answer my question?

T : Sure. I'll explain it to you.
In this paragraph, the writer thinks that we have to save the earth against the pollution.
Thus, the first sentence has the main idea of this paragraph. Do you understand now?
S : Yes, I do. Thank you.
T : You're welcome. Se-ho, let me ask you a question. Think over the question before you answer it.

T : Is there anyone without an answer sheet? All right.
Begin working now and finish within 30 minutes.
S2 : Mr. Kim, I cannot understand the directions of question 9.
T : Let's see. You should choose just one word or phrase that best completes the sentence. Is it clear now?
S2 : Yes, thank you.
S1 : Can I get another answer sheet? I want to change some of my answers.
T : Here you are, but you must hurry up.

T : Here you are! Mmm... You know what? Men should have the courage to admit that they were wrong.
S : Yes?
T : Don't you have something to tell me?
S : I beg your pardon?
T : If you insist on not telling me the truth, I will tell you myself.
S : Okay, I will tell you. I am sorry for cheating.
I promised my mom that I'd get good grades, but I didn't study hard enough, so ...
T : No matter what the reason, what you did is unacceptable. Do you understand?
S : Yes, Ms. Yun. I won't do it again.

Are there any mistakes in the sentences on the board?
Can you see anything wrong with the sentences?
I'll write up the correct answers on the board.
Take out the wrong word, please.
I'm sorry but I can't understand what you say.
I don't think there is anything wrong in this sentence.

At one moment, she seemed fascinating to me - at the next, little short of revolting; I found it hard to understand my own ambivalent reactions.

I cannot understand how you could overlook such a palpable blunder.

I do not entirely condone his misconduct, but I can understand, to a degree, why he behaved as he did.

I fail to understand the reasons for your outlandish behavior; your motives are inscrutable.

I still do not understand why he had to express his artistic personality by defacing my living room walls with those horrible drawings.

I'm not sure if Tom's imperturbable spirit is due to toughness or to sheer inability to understand the dangers of the situation.

You'll find the unknown word comes again, perhaps several times, and by the end of the chapter you'll have guessed its meaning.
That's how we learn the meaning of words in our own language, isn't it?
When I'm telling a story to children, they seldom stop to ask what a word means.
Even when they read, they don't run for the dictionary every time they see an unknown word.
When I read my New York Times these days I often find articles about space programs.
There are sometimes words I don't know ―and some of them are so new that they're not yet in the dictionaries.
But I'm slowly beginning to understand what some of the words mean ― simply by meeting them so often.

Far into the forest stood a little pine tree.
Since it had plenty of fresh air and sunshine, it grew well.
When Christmas came, many young trees were cut.
“Where are they going?” the pine tree asked.
“They are going to the town,” twittered the sparrows.
“There they are dressed in gold and silver and placed in the middle of warm rooms and the children worship them.”
“How I wish that would happen to me!” sighed the tree.
“My sweet, you already have real blessings!” said the sun, but the tree did not understand.
The pine tree was restless and impatient and always wanted to get away.

Conversation can be on two levels―the content one and the feeling one.
For example, yesterday my friend Scott came over and told me what Ann had done to him.
I started to tell him why I thought Ann acted that way and Scott got angry and started fighting with me.
After he left, I realized that he didn't really want me to explain why Ann was that way,
but he wanted someone to understand his feelings because no matter why Ann did it, she really hurt him.
I probably should have said something like, “She really made you mad, didn't she?” and waited until the next day to talk about it.

When I was 10 years old, I took two of my friends to the station to show off my dad.
After showing them around the station, I asked Dad if we could each have a soda.
I detected just the slightest hesitation in my father's voice that day,
but he said “Sure” and gave us each a dime.
We all thanked my father and headed home for lunch.
That evening I happened to hear my parents talking.
Mom seemed upset with Dad, and said,
“You should have just said you didn't have money for sodas.
That money was for your lunch.
The kids have to understand that we don't have any extra money and you need to have your lunch.”

One 10-year-old boy decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a terrible car accident.
The boy began lessons with an old judo master.
The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.
Feeling a little bored, the boy said to his teacher, “Shouldn't I be learning more moves?”
The teacher replied, “This is the only move you'll ever have to know.” Not quite understanding, the boy kept training.

Lately, it seems most of the apartment fires in my area have been caused by children playing with matches or lighters.
I don't understand why parents leave these things around where youngsters can get their hands on them.
This is gross negligence.
Kids will always be curious, but parents must do more than just tell them that fire is dangerous.

When I came back from Vietnam and asked for my money, he said, "I needed it for doctor bills.
I was sure you'd understand.
Wait until I get back on my feet, and I'll pay you back."

It is quite valuable to review the previous lesson or chapter before moving on to the next one.
By doing this you prevent the normal process of forgetting.
For example, people good at remembering names often repeat a person's name in the course of their conversation, "I understand your point of view, Frank."

And the Lord said to the rabbi, 'Come, I will show you hell.'
They entered a room where a group of people sat around a huge pot of stew.
Everyone was famished and desperate.
Each held a spoon that reached the pot, but each spoon had a handle so long that it could not be used to reach each person's mouth.
The suffering was terrible.
'Come, now I will show you heaven,' the Lord said after a while.
They entered another room, identical to the first―the pot of stew, the group of people, the same long spoons.
But there everyone was happy and nourished.
'I don't understand,' said the rabbi.
'Why are they happy here when they were miserable in the other room and everything was the same?'
The Lord smiled, 'Ah, but don't you see?'
He said, 'Here they have learned to feed each other.'

She is home now - subdued and well-behaved, but still unable to understand why we were upset.
All I could say was, "Wait till you have children of your own."
To every runaway I would like to say, "Go back home where you belong.
You'd be surprised how much parents can forgive.
Their love is unconditional."

I found that the elevator was in good order last night. But you say now
that it is out of order. What's the matter with it? I can't understand why it
gets out of order so often these days. Anyway, you must have it mended as soon
as possible.

A certain historian has said of history that "it devours the present." I do not quite
understand what he means, but in science it is surely the other way about: the present
devours the past. This does something to extenuate a scientist's misguided
indifference to the history of ideas.

"I have to laugh sometimes," she says. "When friends come, Jerry immediately
drags them over to show them the computer. Some may actually understand what's
going on, but most just stand there and smile and can't wait to get away."

"I understand the bank is looking for a cashier."
"I thought they hired one a month ago."
"He's the one they're looking for."

Very early in my boyhood I had acquired the habit of going about alone
to amuse myself in my own way.
My mother would miss me when looking out to see what the children were
doing, and I would be called and searched for, to be found hidden away
somewhere in the wood.
This distressed her very much; then to her relief and joy she discovered
that I was there with a motive which she could understand: that I was
watching some living things.
And as she loved all living things herself, she was quite satisfied that
I was not going queer in my head, for that was what she had been fearing.

The habit of thinking by means of comparison is a fatal one.
When anything pleasant occurs, it should be enjoyed to the full, without
stopping to think that it is not so pleasant as something else that may
possibly be happening to someone else.
"Yes," says the envious man, "this is a sunny day, and it is springtime,
and the birds are singing, but I understand that the springtime in
Sicily is a thousand times more beautiful."

*mystify 어리둥절하게 만들다 make (someone) unable to understand or explain something; fill with wonder; completely bewildered:
I'm quite mystified―where can it be?

I ponder the reason for our ignorance or carelessness with regard to beauty.
I attribute it to the fact that basically we do not even understand the
necessity for order.
There is no beauty without order.
Order is the structure upon which beauty is built.
Life itself demands order if it is to contain beauty.
I wish for my country that our villages, our towns, our cities, could be
orderly, so that they could be beautiful.
