1) ~와 거리가 멀다: know nothing about ~; be a complete stranger
It may [or can] safely be said that ~ ; We can safely say that ~
3) 그저 시간 죽이기: a mere means of killing time; only for an idle hour
They took it for granted that I would attend the reception.
He always assumes that his friends are interested in what he is doing.
There is a man who always thinks that money is to be borrowed (from others).
ANS 1) It may safely be said that those who assume that books are to be read by borrowing know nothing about the true joy of reading. These people think of reading as a mere means of killing time.
ANS 2) It is not too much to say that a man who takes it for granted that reading books is borrowing them of others does not know anything about the true joy from reading. Such a man thinks reading is nothing but a mere means of killing time.

ANS 2) I want to read some British novels in English. What kind of books do you think are good for me? Will you please tell me not-so-difficult ones with about 200 pages? I hope you will tell me the name of the publishers and the prices of them, too.

A desk should be a place where we write or read something.
(ANS) A desk should be a place where we write or read something. On my desk, however, all kinds of things are piled up (high) before I know it and there is no space left even for a single glass.

→ 「~이라는 것은 잘 알고 있다」는 I know that~,「부탁드린 일」은 the work I asked you, 「약속 날짜」 Its deadline; the appointed day (또는 date)

If we stopped trying to know what we are ignorant of; if we ceased to try to understand what we don't know.
Today we can hear (or enjoy) lectures on the radio and (also) on TV. 「도대체 어떻게 될까?」 what on earth would becomes of us?; I wonder what would become of us.
(ANS) Today we can hear lectures on the radio and also on TV. But if we stopped trying to know what we are ignorant of, what on earth would become of us?

(ANS) Today we can hear lectures on the radio and also on TV. But if we stopped trying to know what we are ignorant of, what on earth would become of us?

→ 『물론 중요하지만~』- Of course(or No doubt of Indeed or It is true) it is important to~, 「과연 ~이지만, 그러나…」 Of course; No doubt; Indeed; It is true; Undoubtedly; To be sure; I admit
⇒ It is true he is young, but he is prudent for his age.
Indeed he is a psychologist, but he doesn't seem to know how to control children.
I admit he is a good player, but he cannot compare (or be compared) with his brother.
→ 「건강에 주의한다는 것」은 to take care of one's health 와 같이 부정사를 주어로 할 수도 있지만, it를 내세워 문장의 균형을 잡는 것이 좋다.
→ 「병에 걸리는 것을 지나치게 두려워하다」/be too much afraid of getting ill. 좋지 않다/ not wise; unwise; bad policy등, 「병에 걸리다」/ become ill; fall ill, get ill; be taken ill 등.
(ANS) Of course it is important (or it is of course important) to take care of one's health, but it is not wise to be too much afraid of getting ill.

→ 잘하고(못하고)있다: be good(poor) at; be strong(weak) in; (사물을 주어로 해서) be in(out of) one's line
→ 내 경험에서 말한다면: in my experience; so far as I know from my experience

I should rather say (that)
→ 관계가 깊다: be closely connected (what); have a close relationship (to)
(ANS) I liked both English and mathematics. Though they say (that) those who are good at foreign languages are poor at mathematics, and that the reverse is also true, it is not necessarily so in my experience. I would rather say (that) these two faculties are closely connected with each other.

cf) I appreciate your concern(help).
Thank you for your help.

I don't know.
= You got me.
= Search me.
= Beats me.

You are talking over my head.
* 미국인들이 쓰는 회화에서 You've lost me.
그러니까 I don't understand. 또는
I don't know what you are talking about. 또는
I don't get(or dig) it. 또는 I don't follow you.
You are talking over my head.
I don't follow you very well. 또는
Would you mind using simpler words?
This movie is over my head.
It's beyond me도 I don't understand.
I can't do it.

Beat it!
같은 뜻으로 get lost!, scram, split, buzz off, take a walk등
You beat me to her.
You look beat.
또 beat me는 I don't know.
cf) Leave me alone, please.

I don't know why, but I don't like him.
I respect him for his intellect, though.
그리고 though 또는 even though,
I respect him for his intellect though I don't like him.
여기서 though는 I respect...라는 문장과 I don't like...

Do you think I was born yesterday?
* '아는 체도 안 하더라'는 말은 영어로는 not give the time of day이라
Good morning이나 Good evening같은 인사말 조차 하지 않는다는
뜻이다. know the time of day란 말도 있는데 '하루의 시간을
Do you think I don't even know the
time of day?
Do you think I was
born yesterday?

And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Mike : Because she said she spent the night with her sister Mary.
