I got a Dear Jane letter from Tom.: 나는 Tom으로부터 절교 당했어.
→ 1953년 한국전쟁에 참여했던 Frank Morgan이라는 병사의 복무기간이 얼마 남지 않았는데 그에게 편지의 서두에 "Dear John"이라고 쓰여진 절교편지가 날아옴. 여성은 "Dear Jane"을 사용.
대변을 보다의 표현들
- I've got to go number two.
- I have to go take a dump.
- I have to go and pooh.
→ pooh는 (찌꺼기 등을) 제거하다의 뜻.
- I have to go potty.
→ potty는 (아기용) 변기(= I have to go poop.)
- I have a bowel movement.
→ bowel movement는 변통, 배변의 뜻으로 간단히 I have a b.m.이라고 사용하기도 함.
- I gotta go crap.
→ (= I have to go defecate.)
(2) 처음으로 책을 고른다고 하는 쑥스러움에 책방 안에 있는 사람들 모두가 자기를 보고 있는 것 같은 느낌이 들었다.
1) 처음으로: for the first time
2) 스스로: for myself; by myself
3) 보고 있다: be gazing at ~; be looking (fixedly) at
→ 「쑥스러움」은 번역하기에 상당한 연구가 필요한 표현이다. 보통 「쑥스러움」이라고 하면 「너무 드러나서, 부끄럽다, 어색하다」라는 의미인데 이 문제문에서는 「~에 자신이 생기다」로 표현하는 쪽이 좋다.
- 그녀는 선생에게 조금만 칭찬을 들으면 금방 수줍어한다.
She is delight and proud whenever her teacher praises her.
- 별것 아닌 일에 톰은 금방 자신만만해 진다. Tom gets elated over trifling matters.
- 그때가 그의 가장 화려한 시대였다. Those were the days when he felt extremely proud of himself.

(8) 내가 역에 도착했을 때 기차는 이미 떠나고 없었다. 도중에 버스가 고장나지만 않았던들 충분히 시간에 댈 수 있었을 것이다.
→ 역에 도착했을 때 기차는 이미 떠나고 없었다. When I arrived at the station, the train had already left/ When I got to the station, I found (that) the train had already started.
「열차가 떠난」것은 「내가 역에 도착했을 때」보다 이전의 일이다. 이와 같이 보다 전의 동작을 나타내려면 과거완료 시제 (Past Perfect Tense)를 써야한다.
(ANS) When I got to the station, the train had already left. But for the breakdown of the bus on the way, I could have been in plenty of time.
[比較] permission, consent, permit, leave
permission은 정식의 승인 또는 동의를 가리킨다.
ex) Since she was only twenty, she had to get her parents' permission to marry.
consent는 어떤 요청·제안에 응하려는 명확한 결의를 암시한다.
ex) Silence gives consent.
permit는 글로 적은 당국의 허가서, 면허, 인가를 말한다.
ex) He had to get a building permit from the city zoning commission.
leave는 미국에서는 일을 쉬는 허가(permission to be absent from duty)라는 특별한 뜻으로 쓰인다.
ex) He got the usual two weeks' leave before going overseas.
전에는 leave가 「허가」를 의미하는 이 여러 말 중에서 가장 일반적인 말로 사용되었었다.
ex) May I have leave to speak?
그러나 약간 예스러운 데가 있고, 그 때문에 딱딱한 느낌이 있다. 그래서 고문체인 by your leave(실례하오나)는 얼마 전까지만 해도 please와 같은 뜻을 나타냈지만, 지금은 그 딱딱한 어감 때문에 주로 아이러니칼한 경우에 사용되고 있다.
promise: '무엇에 대한 보장'의 뜻이 강하며, 사람을 만날 약속은 appointment라고 해야 한다.

그가 잘못이라고 내가 말하자, 그는 화를 냈다.

* take for a ride는 `차를 탄'이란 뜻이 아니라 `속은'이란
뜻으로 미국인들이 즐겨 쓰는 말이다. for a ride는 생략하고
I was taken. 또는 I got taken. I was had.라고 해도 `속았다'는 뜻이 된다.
ex) It`s not easy to buy a used car without being taken for a ride.
- 중고차는 잘못하면 속아서 사게 마련이다.
turn a cold shoulder to∼ `∼에게 푸대접하다.' `∼을 무시하다.'
have (get) cold feet. `자신을 잃다.' `용기를 잃다.' `겁먹는다.'
ex) I turned a cold shoulder to Mr. Kim who got cold feet and betrayed me.
- 겁을 먹고 나를 배신한 미스터 김을 푸대접했다.
Can (May) I trouble you for a light?
담배불 좀 빌릴수 있을까요?(담배를 피우고 있는 사람)
* light는 lighter는 물론 match 그리고 담배에 붙어있는
불까지도 의미한다.
따라서 got a light라 하면 '성냥이나 라이터 가진 거 있냐
-담배를 피우고 있지 않는 사람' 란 뜻이다.
그런데 singles bar(독신자들이 모여 데이트 상대를 찾는 술집)
같은 데서 남녀가 서로 접근하기 위해 흔히 하는 말을 일컷는다.

Do you mind putting out your cigarette? 담뱃불 좀 꺼 주실래요?

밟아, 꽉꽉!!!!!!
* 자동차를 운전하는 사람에게 옆에 앉은 사람이
'더 밟아, 속도 좀 팍팍 내란 말야!' 라고 하고 싶을 때
쓰는 표현으로 it은 자동차의 accelerator를 가리킨다.
그리고 이런 말조차 길게 느껴질 때는 그냥 Faster!라고만
해도 충분할 것이다. 빨간 신호등을 무시하고 달리는 것은
run a red light라 한다.
I got a ticket for running a red light. 는
'빨간 신호등을 무시하고 달리다가 티켓을 받았다'는 말이다.
The barber's razor nicked the customer's neck twice.
Customer : Give me a glass of water.

아뇨. 내 목이 새는지 알아보고 싶어서요.
for nothing의 3가지 뜻.
* 미국 사람들이 많이 쓰는 말 for nothing에는 대체로 3가지
다른 뜻이 있는데 하나는 '공짜'란 뜻이고 또 하나는 '보람없이'
그리고 나머지 하나는 '이유없이'란 뜻이다.
ex) 1. I got a concert ticket for nothing.
2. You did all that hard work for nothing?
3. They don't call you a skinflint for nothing. skinflint 구두쇠
I got butterflies in my stomach. 나 떨고 있다.
* 걱정이 되거나 긴장이 되어 뱃속이 불편하고 몸이 떨리는 것을
미국 사람들은 I have(got) butterflies in my stomach라는 식으로
표현한다. in my stomach는 생략하고 I got butterflies라고만
하기도 한다. give a person the creeps 는 누구를 '섬뜩하게
만든다'는 말이고 감격해서 목이 메는 것은 feel a lump in one's
throat 즉 '목에 무엇이 걸린 것같이 느낀다'는 식으로 표현한다.
그리고 춥거나, 흥분했거나, 무슨 일에 감동했을 때 피부가 닭살같이
되는 것 즉 '전율을 느끼는 것'을 have goosebumps라고 하고
형용사로서는 goosebumpy라고도 한다.
cf) Am I trembling? 나 떨고 있니?
My hat's off to you. 경의를 표합니다.
* '당신에게 내 모자를 벗습니다'라고 하면 I admire you 또는
I respect you 즉 '난 당신을 존경합니다.'와 같은 말이다.
I take off my hat to you라고 길게 말하기도 한다. 같은 뜻으로
I've got to hand it to you라고도 하는데 이것은 '존경한다.'는
뜻도 되고 '알아줘야겠다'는 뜻도 된다.
She got hooked on drugs '그녀는 마약에 중독이 되었다' 이 말을
좀 다르게 해보면 get addicted to∼이다.
He got addicted to coke '그는 코카인에 중독되었다' 그러나 이 말은
꼭 반드시 나쁜 뜻으로만 쓰이는 것은 아니고 무엇에 열중하는 것,
I got hooked on billiard라 하면 '난 당구의 재미에 빠졌다'는
뜻이 된다. 이것은 I am a billiard nut과 같은 말이다.
nut은 무엇에 미친 사람을 가리킨다.
Get some fresh air outside 바람 좀 쐬야겠어.
* '바람 좀 쐰다'는 get some wind가 아니고 get some fresh air라
한다. get wind는 '알아내다' '눈치채다'란 말이다.
