(ANS) Many nations have harvest festivals and Thanksgiving days, while many other cultures observe the veneration of ancestors, but no one has anything quite like the Korean Chusok. Historians tell us that the Chusok festival originated during the reign of the third king of the Silla Kingdom nearly 2,000 years ago. Chusok involves many things. It is an offering of thanks to heaven for the harvest, an appeal for the good fortune of another harvest in the next year, and an offering of sacrifices to one's family ancestors for all they did for the clan and family. In addition, of course, there are family gathering, much hearty eating, and such activities as the circle dance in the light of the full harvest moon.

(ANS) There are indications that North Korea has shown an interest in China a new economic policies. North Korean officials have paid numerous visits, for example, to China's free trade zones, and North Korea's new joint ventures law is apparently patterned after that of China. The North's interest in economic talks with the ROK, which is unprecedented, reflects in some measure this groping for new economic solutions. The North may believe that by improving relations with the South, at least to some degree, it may be able to persuade Western nations to provide the technology, trade and investment that it hopes for and needs.

that unification of the two Koreas should be brought about through a

Mutiny Aboard Fishing Vessel : ¿ø¾ç¾î¼± ¼±»ó¹Ý¶õ
We are stunned by the shocking mutiny aboard a tuna fishing
boat with a crew of 24 in the South Pacific that has left seven Koreans
and four men from other countries dead. The mishap took place aboard
the 294-ton Honduras-registered Pescamar 15 that was owned by an
Omani firm and operated by Daehyon Fisheries Co. of South Korea. The
victims reportedly were the Korean captain, six other Koreans, three
Indonesians and one Chinese.

It has been reported the mutiny was the work of a number of Chinese
seamen, all ethnic Koreans, who complained of the hard work and
demanded to be sent home. Earlier, conflicts had occurred aboard
several other Korean fishing boats with foreign crew but no fatalities
were involved.

Mutiny on High Seas : °øÇØ¿¡¼ÀÇ ¼±»ó¹Ý¶õ
The frequent violent crime on Korean fishing boats on the high seas
is quite perplexing. Accordingly, we are deeply concerned by the most
recent case in which 11 seamen, seven of whom were Korean, were
killed aboard a tuna fishing vessel allegedly by six ethnic
Korean-Chinese, in a mutiny in the South Pacific.

There are a number of complex reasons for the savagery. First of all,
Korean fisheries firms are finding it necessary to hire inexpensive and
less well trained workers from foreign countries. Racial disharmony
among crew members easily develops into violent clashes resulting in
injuries and even fatalities.

Firm Measures For Labor's Return
³ë»ç¹®Á¦ Á¤¸é´ëÀÀÇؾß
The Korean Confederation of Trade Union(KCTU) has withdrawn from the
Tripartite Committee, comprised of labor, management and government
sectors.
The worry became a reality and even more concerning is that the other large
union organization, the Federation of Korean Trade Union (FKTU), is
preparing to back out this week, as well.
After only 13 months have expired since its creation, the Committee is in
danger of extinction. It will almost certainly cause additional instability in the
labor market.

Chopsticks are handy eating tools that have been around for a very long time.
The Chinese invented them over 2500 years ago.
Chopsticks are still used widely today, even though many people in Japan and China are using knives and forks
because they want to learn more about Western ways of eating.
While interest in using knives and forks is growing throughout Asia,
more and more Americans are learning to use chopsticks.
They use them mainly when they eat in Asian restaurants.
Waiters in most Japanese, Korean and Chinese restaurants in America will give you chopsticks if you ask for them.

UNICEF reported that Korean children are most exposed to ¡°death by traffic accidents¡± among OECD countries.
It announced that Korea ranks first with 25.6 deaths for every 100,000 children.
Many drivers in Korea ignore traffic lights and drive dangerously.
In Korea, 71% of the children die by getting struck by cars while walking.
If we observe traffic regulations and keep safe driving in mind, the nation can save about 12,000 young lives each year.

They were born out of the habit of Korean housewives of making good use of small, otherwise useless, pieces of leftover cloth.
They are easily folded and take up little space.
So they have become a part of everyday Korean customs and practices.
Although they were created for everyday use, they have added style to special occasions.
A typical example of this is to wrap wedding gifts.
They are also convenient and safe when used to carry things.
Furthermore, they are more durable, economical and environment-friendly than paper or plastic bags.

Many successful Korean-Americans started from scratch in the U.S.A.
Since the mid-1990s, teaching Korean to foreigners has made quiet and
steady progress. Many universities now offer Korean language programs in
Korea and abroad, and many textbooks have been produced for learners of
Korean. Only a small member of foreigners, however, have benefited from
this progress. Most foreign workers are being taught by Korean coworkers
or volunteers who have no or little teaching experience. Thus, it is
necessary to establish better educational programs for teaching the
Korean language to foreign workers.

The quota is a hardly defensible barrier to free trade,
regardless of the *rationale to *sustain it. No Korean would
deny that the preservation of our unique culture and its
identity has an essential significance. But, the strength of
our cultural identity is not so fragile as to totally
disintegrate upon the opening of our film market. Nor will
the scrapping of the quota make Korea an American cultural
colony, which was the case being made by protesters Thursday.
This incredible claim cannot be sustained on *empirical
grounds. None of the countries of the world has, thus far,
been a victim of American cultural imperialism, although
their markets are fully open to U.S. movies.

after sales service.
Mr. Lee: I have here a simple chart showing our office
locations in the America. They are either our branches or
affiliated ones.
Mr. West: I can see that you have several offices. Do they
all have repair men?
Mr. Lee: Of course. So if any trouble arises, they can deal
with it promptly.
Mr. West: The guarantee period for the product is one year, I
presume?
Mr. Lee: Yes, within that period, all repairs are free, but
after that, repairs will be charged. However, since the
quality is high, the need for repairs will be rare.
