So-so와 So-and-so
* so-so는 not so good, not so bad의 준말이라 생각하여 '그저 그래'란
말이고, so와 so사이에 and가 하나 더 들어가서 so-and-so가 되면
전혀 다른 뜻이 된다. 이것은 남을 나쁘게 말하되 직설적으로
표현하지는 않고 '왜 그렇고 그런 사람 아니냐?'는 식으로 말할 때 쓴다.
예를 들면 상사가 아무것도 아닌걸 가지고 한바탕 잔소리를 하고
나간 뒤에 하는 말이 동료가 하는 말이 Don't take it seriously.
He's always been a nagging so-and-so.라고 한 마디 해주면
'그걸 뭐 심각하게 생각하지 말라구. 그 자식이야 항상 잔소리
많은 그렇고 그런 사람이니까'란 말이 된다. so-and-so의 복수
즉 여러 사람을 가리킬 때는 끝에 s만 하나 더 붙여 so-and-sos라고
쓰면 된다. 그리고 so-and-so를 전부 나쁜 욕이라고 생각하면 안 된다.
왜냐하면 이것은 막연히 '아무개'란 뜻으로도 쓰이기 때문이다.

in the pink와 in the red
* in the pink는 '몸의 컨디션이 아주 좋다'는 뜻인데 건강한 사람은
얼굴이 불그스레 핑크색을 띠고 있으니까 아마 그런 말이 생겼을거라
생각되는데 in good health와 같이 '건강 상태가 아주 좋다'는 말이다.
그러나 비슷한 색인 red도 같은 뜻이라 생각하면 안된다.
in the red는 '적자 상태에 있다' 즉 broke와 같은 말이다.
I am in the red라고 하면 I am broke와 같은 뜻이 된다.
그리고 tickled pink라 하면 very happy 또는 very pleased와
같은 뜻으로 쓰이는 말이다.
red에 관해서 또 다른 표현을 알아보면 see red 란 말이 있는데
글자 그대로 번역하면 '빨간색을 본다'는 말인데 bullfight를
생각해보면 see red가 무슨 뜻인지 알 수 있을 것이다.
see red는 황소가 투우사의 빨간 보자기를 보고 달려오듯이
'화가 잔뜩 났다'는 말이다. 약올리는 친구를 보고
I'm seeing red!라고 말한다면 '나 화났어!'란 의미가 된다.

* 더운 여름날 웃통을 벗고 있는데, 갑자기 손님이 들어오면
난감한데 이럴 때 Excuse my appearance라 하면
'웃통을 벗고 있어서 죄송합니다'란 뜻이 되는 것이다.
남자가 여동생 방에 들어가면서 Are you decent?라고 물으면
'옷을 입고 있니?'란 말이 된다. 여기서 decent는 dressed
즉 '옷을 입고 있는'이란 뜻이다. decent는 '점잖다'는 뜻을
가지고 있다. 행동이나 복장 그리고 건전한 정도의 형용사적인
의미를 갖고 있다. This is a decent familiy house, not a
night club이라고 하면 '이것은 나이트 클럽이 아니라 점잖은
가정집이다'란 뜻이 된다. 또한 decent는
pretty good(꽤 괜찮은)과 같은 뜻으로도 쓰인다.

'그는 수학 점수를 꽤 잘 받았다'는 뜻이 된다.
