궁극적으로 나한테 있다.'는 뜻이다.
미국인들은 Don't pass the buck to me. 'buck(책임)을 나한테로
pass하지 말라' 즉 '나한테 책임을 미루지 말라'는 뜻이 되기 때문이다.
그리고 미국인들은 또 'Don't look at me'란 말도 즐겨 쓰는데
'나한테 책임이 없다.' '난 몰라' 란 뜻으로 받아들이면 될 것이다.
Put down의 여러 가지 뜻.
* 새로 집이나 차를 산 사람을 보고 우리는 '현금은 얼마나 냈느냐?'고
흔히 묻곤 한다. 이 때 How much did you put down? 라고 하면 된다.
여기서 put down은 '얼마를 down payment로 지불한다.'는 뜻이다.
put down은 원래 글자 그대로 무엇을 '내려놓다'는 뜻이다.
가구점에서 산 의자를 배달해 온 배달원에게 put it down here. 라고
하면 '그거 여기 내려 놓으세요'란 말이다. 그러나 동양인이라고
깔보는 백인에게 Don't put me down because I'm an Oriental.이라고
하면 '내가 동양인이라고 깔보지 말라'는 말이 된다.
그러니까 put down은 '깔보다'는 뜻으로 쓰인다.
look down on도 같은 뜻으로 쓰인다. 또 put down은 장부에
'기록하다'는 뜻도 된다.

정말 말도 안되지만 be tickled to death란 idiom(관용구)를

같은 뜻이다. 글자 그대로 해석하면 '너무 간지러워서 죽는다'는

하여튼 미국에서 많이 쓰이는 표현이니깐 눈물을 머금고 알아둘
수밖에 없다. to death대신 pink를 써서 be tickled pink라고도
한다. 물론 I'm dying to see her라고 한국에서 쓰는 '죽겠다'란
표현도 쓴다. This heat wave is murder 또는
The recession is killing us 등등 '죽겠다' 란 표현도 많이 있다.
Don't go to pieces! 절망 하지마!
* 위의 말을 글자 그대로 해석해 보면 '조각조각으로 가지 마라'는
의미인데 go to pieces란 사람의 정상적인 몸을 one piece라고
할 때 여러 개의 작은 조각으로 산산조각 난다는 표현이다.
그러니 크게 실망, 또는 절망한다는 뜻이다. 이런 상태에 있는
사람을 보고 Pull yourself together라고 하면 '(너무 절망하지
말고 재기를 위해) 정신 좀 차려라'는 뜻이다. 이 말은
'산산조각이 난 마음을 다시 한 데 뭉친다'는 표현이다.
in one piece는 '무사히' 즉 safely란 뜻으로 일상회화에서
많이 쓰는 말이다. 출장 간 남편이 집에 전화를 걸어 아내에게
