[比較] what ever, whatever
What ever can it mean?(대체 무슨 말이냐?), What ever shall we do?(대체 어떻게 해야 할까?)
(b) 관계사: whatever는 복합관계사 what의 강조형으로, all that, any(thing) that(~인 것은 모두, ~인 것은 무엇이나)를 의미한다.
Eat whatever you like./ Whatever is left over is yours.
Whatever request you make will be granted.(네가 요구하는 것은 무엇이든 들어주겠다.)
형용사로 쓰이는 경우 더 한층 강조하기 위해 any, no 따위로 수식된 명사 다음에 자리를 잡아, for any reason whatever(여하한 이유로든지)처럼 할 수 있다. for whatever reason보다 뜻이 강하다.
I have no plans whatever.
Whatever happens, we'll meet here tonight./ Whatever man told you that, it is not true.

A rat in a trap.
You look like a wet rat!
I smell a rat here.
비슷한 표현으로 Something is fishy here.
He likes working for a major corporation
although sometimes he finds it too much of a rat race.
I can't rat on him.
-
Rats!
Rats! I have a flat tire again.
If you don't throw away old things, you'll become a pack rat.

영화 Back to the Future에서 주인공(Michael J. Fox)이 자주 들었던 욕입니다.
You chicken! Come back here.

Don't be chicken-hearted when you have to fight against enemy.

-

-

Hey, stop it. I don't want to fight over chicken-and-egg problem.
I may be a spring chicken, but I am doing my best.
Look at that chick. She is a knock-out.

It is not allowed to smoke here. (X)
그래서 '금연' 표지에도 'Do not smoke'가 아니라 'No smoking'이라고 표시된다.
① Smoking is not allowed here.(여기서는 흡연하실 수 없습니다.)
② This is a "non-smoking" area.(여긴 금연 구역입니다.)
③ You're in a "no smoking" area.(금연 구역에 계시는군요.)
④ You're not supposed to smoke here.(여기선 담배를 삼가해 주십시오.)

So, 'surf and turf' means 'steak and lobster' or 'steak and shrimp'.

T : The classroom is messy. Who is the monitor?
S1 : I am.
T : Please clean the blackboard with a dump rag. We're running out of chalk.
S1 : I will go to the teachers' room and bring you some chalk.
T : Just a few minutes ago, I watched someone hit the eraser against the wall. Please don't do that.
S2 : It's very stuffy in here. May I open the door?
T : Sure. Go ahead.

T : Mira, will you do me a favor?
S : Sure, what is it?
T : Please go to the teacher's room and bring me the tape recorder.

T : Where is the eraser?
S : Here you are, Miss Kim.

It is a little cloudy today and the room is a little dark.
Turn on the lights, please.

S1 : Here comes the teacher. Let's stop talking now.
S2 : It might be a good idea to pretend to study English.
T : Sorry guys. I had something important to do.
Did you keep quiet while I was away?
S2 : Of course we did. We were studying English.
T : Is that true? Ah, look around you! If you keep your surroundings clean, you can study harder.
Let's pick up just one thing each.
Ss : Yes, we will.

T : Is there anyone without an answer sheet? All right.
Begin working now and finish within 30 minutes.
S2 : Mr. Kim, I cannot understand the directions of question 9.
T : Let's see. You should choose just one word or phrase that best completes the sentence. Is it clear now?
S2 : Yes, thank you.
S1 : Can I get another answer sheet? I want to change some of my answers.
T : Here you are, but you must hurry up.

T : Here you are! Mmm... You know what? Men should have the courage to admit that they were wrong.
S : Yes?
T : Don't you have something to tell me?
S : I beg your pardon?
T : If you insist on not telling me the truth, I will tell you myself.
S : Okay, I will tell you. I am sorry for cheating.
I promised my mom that I'd get good grades, but I didn't study hard enough, so ...
T : No matter what the reason, what you did is unacceptable. Do you understand?
S : Yes, Ms. Yun. I won't do it again.

It is all very well for science fiction writers to speculate, but is here any conclusive reason to believe that intelligent life exists in other parts of the universe?

The two snakes that you are most likely to encounter around your home or garden are the Common Garter snake and the Eastern Ribbon snake.
At first glance it is difficult to tell them apart.
Here are a few clues.
The Garter snake has two rows of black spots.
His tail also isn't as long as that of the Ribbon snake.
The Ribbon snake by contrast has a tail that is about a third of its total length.
Measure the length by starting from the end of the tip to where the snake's body width stops widening.
The Ribbon snake also has three yellow stripes that run the length of his body.
Garter

At the moment it's a bit hard because I'm not used to living away from home.
I have to do everything for myself, like cooking, washing and ironing.
Mom used to do all that!
Studying here is very different from high school in my home town.
We have to choose which lectures to go to and when to do it, but here you have more freedom.
I'm not used to that so I often leave my essays to the last minute.
Then I have to work right through the night, which is something I've never done before.

Situated at an elevation of 1,350m, the city of Kathmandu, which looks out on the sparkling Himalayas,
enjoys a warm climate year-round that makes living here pleasant.
Kathmandu sits almost in the middle of a basin, forming a square about 5km north-south and 5km east-west.
It was the site of the ancient kingdom of Nepal.
It is now the capital of Nepal and, as such, the center of its government, economy, and culture.

Some plants pollinate throughout the spring and summer and can cause allergy symptoms.
Here are pollen tips: Avoid, if you can, going outside on a day when the pollen count is high such as a dry, windy day.
Keep the windows closed and use air conditioners when possible.
Air conditioning will decrease indoor pollen counts because it recirculates indoor air instead of outside air that carries pollen.
Have someone kill weeds by cutting them or using weed killers.

I always warm up by doing some light stretching before doing exercise.
Doing this prepares me mentally as well as physically to perform my workout.
It can also greatly reduce the risk of injury.
Here is a simple stretching exercise that you can do easily: Sit down and spread your legs apart.
Gently try to put your chest as close to the ground as you can, with your arms straight forward.

Well, as in most work situations, we have a problem here with communication.
That is, most managers do not want to hear people complain, and most employees are afraid to come right out and say what they feel.
They usually won't say what they like or don't like.
They may complain to each other during lunch or after work, but they do not complain directly to the manager.
It is important, however, for a manager to find out if he or she is doing a good job.
One way to do this is to give employees a chance to talk.
Employees need an opportunity to say what is wrong, what they don't like about the work situation, and what they would change to make their work better.

Reporter : What is the main role of your organization?
Mr. Kim : We gather opinions and requests from people and deliver them to the politicians.
And when we find some politicians not doing their jobs properly, we push them to do their best to fulfill their duties.
Reporter : Why did you choose to work here in Seoul?
Mr. Kim : Well, we talked over this issue for a long time.
And most of the members agreed that it would be better to have our office in the center of political power.
The decision was right and we'll stay here for a while.

Driving fast last Monday, I was pulled over by a police officer.
The officer noticed that my shirt had the name of a local secondary school on it.
“I teach math,” I explained.
He smiled and said, “OK. Here's a problem. A teacher is speeding on the highway at 25 kilometers over the limit.
At $12 for every kilometer over the limit, plus $40 court costs, what is her total cost?”
I replied, “taking that total, subtracting the low salary I receive, multiplied by the number of kids that hate math,
then adding to that the fact that none of us would be anywhere without teachers, I'd say zero.”
He handed me back my license, “Actually, math was never my favourite subject. Please slow down.”

When you observe the night sky with a telescope, you must be patient.
If at first you don't see anything where a star cluster or nebula is supposed to be, keep looking.
Then look some more.
You'll be surprised at how much more of the scene comes into view with prolonged scrutiny: faint little stars here and there, and just possibly the object of your desire.
After you see your object once or twice, you'll see it more and more often.
After a few minutes you may be able to see it nearly continuously where at first you thought there was nothing but blank sky.

Earthquakes themselves are unpredictable.
Although any powerful submarine earthquake can bring a dangerous tsunami, not all such earthquakes actually result in a big wave.
Even though you have an effective detection system, it is useless if you cannot evacuate a threatened area.
Here, speed is of the essence.
Computer modeling can help show which areas are likely to be safest,
but common sense is often the best guide―run like the wind, away from the sea.
Evacuation warnings, too, should be easy to give as long as people are awake.
Radios are very effective to tell people to run.

If Madeline Powell had her way, she'd eat like vegetarian.
Many nights, dinner would be a simple salad or rib-sticking bowl of porridge.
But Madeline, 39, has her family to consider.
“My son is picky with vegetables,” she says regrettably.
“And my husband, Jim, is a meat-and-potatoes guy.”
Guess what's happened since they married 21 years ago?
Between them, Madeline and Jim have gained nearly 50 kilos.
Putting on weight after marriage is a common reality, many studies shows.
But relax.
It's possible to modify even deep-rooted patterns.
Here are strategies for handling some of life's difficult dining experiences.

Weinberger initially expected to reveal in March what sort of
intercontinental manned bomber the U.S. would build to replace its aging fleet
of 316 B-52s, whose mission it is to retaliate against the U.S.S.R. if a nuclear
strike is ever mounted. But here the Secretary ran into a dilemma that bedevils
all such programs: whether to wait for the development of hot new technology, at
the price of forgoing a weapon that could be used quickly, or order arms that
could be put into production rapidly, at the cost of settling for something less
effective than a later one could be.

When I telephoned my sister's house from my office, her teen-age son
informed me she wasn't home. I knew from past experience that leaving
a message to return my call would be futile. "Do me a favor, Eric,"
I said. "Move the tea kettle from the stove to the coffee table.
When your mother asks what it's doing there, tell her I told you to do
it and she should call me to find out why."
Later on I had to leave the office, and I returned to find my wastebasket
perched on top of my desk. "Why is this here?" I asked the secretary.
"Your sister returned your call," she replied.

David was a young man who worked in an office in a big city. His hobby
was trout fishing, but he did not often get a chance to practice it.
Then one summer he decided to have a holiday in a beautiful place in
the mountains where there were a lot of streams.
"I ought to be able to have some good fishing there," he said to himself.
The first morning after he arrived, he walked to the nearest stream
with his fishing-rod.
He saw an old man with his rod standing beside the water.
David said to him, "Good morning, sir. Is this a private stream?"
The old man answered that it was not.
David said, "Why don't you fish here with me, sir?"
The old man answered with a smile, "I should like to, but I'm sorry I can't."
David then said, "Well, it won't be a crime if I catch some fish here,
will it?"
"Oh, no," answered the old man, "it won't be a crime, but it will
certainly be a miracle."

If you have difficulty deciding whether to delegate, here are some questions to ask yourself :
* Do you have time to complete the task? If not, delegate it.
* Does this task require your personal supervision and attention? If it doesn't, assign it.
* If you don't do the task yourself, will your reputation or the reputation of your team be hurt?
If the answer is no, delegate it.
* Is there anyone on your team with the skill or expertise to complete the task? If so, delegate it.
* Is there someone on your team who would benefit from the experience of performing the task?
If the answer is yes, give him the opportunity.

B:Sure. I don't mind it.
A:You are very kind. Thanks a lot.
B:You're welcome.
*
는 Is
this seat taken?=Is this seat vacant?=Is this seat empty?
May I sit here?
나 Do you mind if I sit here? Mind if I sit here?
No, I don't. No, I don't mind it. No,not at all.로
You're very kind.를 It's very kind of you.

A:Just a moment, please. Jane, the phone's for you.
B:Hello. This is Tom. Would you like to go to a concert tonight?
A:Yes, I'd love to. Will you come to pick me up?
Just a
moment, Just a minute, Just a second. 혹은 Hold the line.이나 Hold on.
The phone's for you, 혹은 간단히 It's for you.
You are wanted on the phone.등으로
전화대화에서 나는 탐이다 는 This is Tom.
는 Is this Tom?
This is the maeil Newspaper.

A:It must be the wind that makes it so cold. I'm freezing!
B:Me, too. Let's go inside. It's no fun standing out here, even if the
sun is shining.
**
[It must be the wind-]에서 must는 강한 추측을 나타낸다.
틀림이 없다]는 [Tom must be hungry]라고 말한다. 이 문장에서 the wind는
[It must be the humidity that makes it
so
hot]이라고 한다. [Let's go inside]의 반대로 [Let's go outside]이다. [even

A:Excuse me, is this seat taken?
B:No, it isn't.
A:Would you mind moving over one, so my friend and I can sit
together?
를 [Is this seat taken?]라고
다른 표현으로는 [May I sit here?]
you mind if I sit here?] Would you mind...?
부탁을 들어줄 경우에는 No, not at all. 혹은 No, of course not.
I'm sorry I can't do it.

A : Excuse me. Could you tell me how I can get to the
First National Bank?
B : Go straight on this street, turn to the left at the
second corner, and you'll find it.
A : Excuse me. Could you tell me the way to the First
National Bank?
B : Yes, Walk for two blocks. You'll find it on your right.
A: Excuse me. Is this the right way to the First National Bank?
B : I'm sorry. I'm a stanger here myself.
Could you draw me a map, please?

Take me to the airport, please.
Take me to this address, please.
Do you know where this address is.
How much will it be? Can you take me there for under

Stop here, please.
Stop in front of that building, please.
Let me off here.
How much is the fare?
You're overcharging me.

Unfortunately, from the standpoint of our company, the content is
not really suited to our sphere of activity in that it is neither
business nor interculturally oriented. Our publisher felt that the
coverage was also not detailed enough to command much interest from the
high school or university education system here. Therefore, though the
tapes are not without merit, it does not appear that we can be of any
direct help.
