A bright light was shining into it, but I could not see where the light came from.
The room was square, and its walls were covered with terrible paintings of devils.
The colors of these pictures had faded, but the drawings were still clear.
There was a round pit in the middle of the floor.
I saw all this in a few seconds, although I could hardly move.
But a moment later, I heard a strange noise from the pit.

One day, a poor man named Scott, came to visit Taylor.

The restaurant belonged to a rich man.
I only smelled the food.

In the court the rich man began shouting angrily at Scott.
And the judge asked Scott to pay him right now.
Taylor stepped forward and then said, “This poor man is my elder brother. I will pay you instead.”
After he heard this, the rich man smiled, thinking about his payment.
Then Taylor took a bag of money from his belt, a bag of copper coins.
He bent down next to the rich man and shook the bag.
“Listen. Do you hear this sound?” said he.
“Of course I hear it,” shouted the rich man impatiently.
“Well, then,” answered Taylor, “the problem is solved. The debt is paid.
My brother has smelled your food, and you have heard his money.”
The poor man was saved.

This idea also works with children.
A few years ago, a child of mine wouldn't brush her teeth before going to bed.
Nothing we did could make her change her mind.
Then, my parenting class teacher recommended that I should give her rewards.
So I used this simple phrase, which worked wonders:
“If you go and brush your teeth now, we will have time to read three stories instead of just one.”
Whenever she heard it, she would jump up and brush her teeth right away.

To answer that question, a group of researchers conducted a study.
Subjects in the study were shown slides of light blue or beige pens.
At the same time they looked at the pens, they heard either pleasant or unpleasant music.
Later they were told to choose one of the pens as a gift.
The majority of them chose the pen they had looked at while they were listening to pleasant background music.

and asked the driver to take him to the BBC, but the taxi-driver, who
did not recognize him, said he could not take him anywhere just then,
because he wanted to go back to his home at the other end of London to
hear Churchill make a speech on the radio.
Churchill was so pleased when he heard this answer that he gave the man
a pound, which was worth quite a lot in those days.
"All right, get in," said the driver happily, opening the door of the
taxi. "I'll take you, and to hell with Churchill and his speech!

I can barely remember life without television. I have spent 20,000 hours
of my life in front of television. Not all my contemporaries watched so
much, but many did, and what's more, we watched the same programs and
