- go to the dogs: 파멸하다

1) 하와이에 들리다: stop (over) at the Hawaiian Islands
2) ~의 돌아오는 길에: on one's way (back) from ~
3) 처음의 예정에는 없었다: was not my first plan [or schedule]; did not arrange
Many young Koreans went to America to see and hear a lot then.

ANS 2) At first I did not intend to stay at the Hawaiian Islands on my way back from America. But staying there for a week added to my experience [or stock of information].

[比較] look, see, watch
ex) look for violets in the spring(봄에 오랑캐꽃을 찾다)/ He refused to look in the mirror the nurse gave him.
ex) I am looking, Mother, I can't see it anywhere.
ex) animals able to see in the dark/ Once over the pass you will see the town below you.(저 고개만 넘어서면 아래에 그 마을이 보인다.)
ex) watch while a procession passes/ watch something as closely as a cat watches a mouse.

[比較] regardless, irregardless, irrespective
I will leave irregardless of what he says라고 하는 수가 있지만, 무식한 비표준적인 용법이다.
The arrangements must be made regardless of (or irrespective of) his personal feelings in the matter.
I'll do it regardless(하여간 그것을 하겠다)는 regardless of what you think(네가 어떻게 생각하든 상관없이), regardless of that might happen(무슨 일이 일어나든 상관없다)의 뜻이다.
regret, sorry, deplore, lament
Mr. Lee regrets that he will be unable to accept the kind invitation of Mr. Kim for the sixteenth.
I'm sorry I made you cry.
He deplored the conduct of compatriots in European cities.
He paused to lament the brave men who were not there to hear him speak.
I lament that your conduct has made it necessary for me to speak to your father.

* be through with : "끝장나다"
A : Are you crazy? You can't do this to me.

A : I don't want to hear it. I'm through with you.

Could you speak up, please?

I can barely(hardly) hear you.

You can say that again. / You`re telling me. / You don`t say.
/ That makes two of us. Hear! Hear! / Right on!
You said it!

You'll be tickled pink to hear this.
I'm tickled to death to be here this evening
정말 말도 안되지만 be tickled to death란 idiom(관용구)를
be tickled to death는 be very pleased 또는 be very happy와
수밖에 없다. to death대신 pink를 써서 be tickled pink라고도
물론 I'm dying to see her라고 한국에서 쓰는 '죽겠다'란
This heat wave is murder 또는
The recession is killing us

I hear you got a promotion recently.

The Vikings used to harry the English coast.
George

You say just what everyone wants to hear.
You say just what he wants to hear.
You say just what she wants to hear.

I want to hear you play the clarinet.

What's going on?
I could hear you outside.

Elizabeth whispered very softly, "Hey, fierce dragon, can you hear me?"

I hear you hit a high in sales last month.

I'll call you as soon as I hear something.

After you hear the dial tone, dial the number you want to call.

Ah, Mr. Kim, I've been waiting to hear from you.

It's good to hear from you again.

Can you hear me now?

I had my headphones on, so I couldn't hear you well.

Did you hear that at this outing we're going to gave a talent show competition between departments?

Now, Let's quiet down!
The rest of you, please keep quiet.
I didn't hear what the teacher said.
It's too loud. I can't follow.
Okay. I've had enough. That's it!
I couldn't hear what Bill was saying because of the noise.

T : Can you hear all right?
S : The volume is too loud. Would you turn it down a little?

Listen to the words[lyrics] first.
Repeat the words after me.
This is one of my favorite songs. Who sings this song?
Clap your hands to the rhythm.
Listen carefully as you watch the video.
Let's hear that line again.
Can you play that song for us again?
Sing after me line by line/one line at a time.
We'll begin after I count to three.

S1 : Let's take a break.
S2 : What? Take a break? You haven't even learned your lines by heart yet.
We should practice at least for another hour before we take a break.
S3 : Excuse me. I am sorry to say this, but I can't practice any longer. My father wants me to come home early.
S2 : You can't go. You've got to stay. No excuses. Who can play your part? It's too late to find a substitute.
You can practice on your own during breaks. So-ra! I can't even hear your voice. Speak louder and clearer.
S4 : Okay.
S2 : Have you forgotten your role is female? Speak like a woman.

T : Min-su, please answer question 1.
S : Sorry, what page are we on?
T : What were you thinking about?
S : Sorry.
T : What have you got on your desk?
S : Well, I was thinking about my music homework. Today is the deadline.
T : I don't want to hear your excuses. You should have done it before.
S : The thing is I was sick over the weekend, I didn't have time for it. Sorry, it won't happen again.
T : Okay. Any volunteers?

T : Everyone, It's time for listening practice. First of all, let's check the tape recorder. Is it clear enough?
S1 : Not bad, Mr. Kim.
T : Can you hear in the back?
S2 : No, Mr. Kim. Is it at the maximum?
T : I wonder.
S2 : If so, I don't think the tape recorder works properly.
T : Oh, I'm sorry. I've got too much bass. Just a second. I'll try it again. Is the volume all right now?
S2 : Yes, Mr. Kim.
T : Good. Now, you will hear the dialogue. Listen carefully.

Could you plug the cassette player in for me?

While listening, mark your answer sheet.

T : Let's listen to the tape. Min-ho, could you plug the cassette player in for me?
S1 : Yes, sir.
T : You're going to hear a dialogue about In-su's school life. Can you hear in the back?
S2 : No, I can't, Mr. Kim.
T : OK. I'll turn up the volume. Is the sound clear enough?
S1 : Yes, it is.
T : Good. The tape has started. Listen carefully.

I beg your pardon.
I didn't understand you.
I'm sorry but I can't hear you.
I'm sorry but I missed your question.
Would you please pronounce the word again?
Would you mind speaking a little more slowly?
I can't follow you.
Please explain it in easier words.
Would you write it out for us on the chalkboard?

Is the meaning clear to you?
Is that clear?
Do you understand me?
Can you hear my voice now?
Do you understand what I mean?
I think you understand it now.
Am I speaking too fast? Shall I speak a little more slowly?

S1 : What's the matter, Seon-mi?
S2 : I have a runny nose and a little fever.
S1 : Sorry to hear that. One moment, please. Mrs. Lee, Seon-mi looks pale.
T : Seon-mi, what seems to be the problem?
S2 : I feel dizzy and my body aches all over.
T : That's too bad. Maybe you've got the flu. You'd better hurry home.
Be sure to see a doctor with your mother.
S2 : I will. Thank you. Bye.

S1 : Our music class was very exciting. Beethoven's work is always touching.
S2 : You can say that again. By the way, what's the matter, So-ra? You look so serious.
S3 : I have lost my wallet.
S2 : I'm sorry to hear that. Let's ask our classmates. Has anyone found a wallet?
S4 : I have. Whose wallet is this? I found it in the music room.
S3 : It's mine. Thank you, Seon-hee.

At the zoo, Simaba the lion was very sick.
The animal doctor came and tried giving him some red meat full of medicine.
Poor Simba did not even raise his head.
Finally, Simba stopped breathing.
The doctor said, with tears in his eyes, “I regret to tell you that Simba is dead.”
The little children were very shocked to hear it.
“I feel like I've lost an old friend.
I can remember reporting Simba's birth,” said a reporter.

People store different kinds of information in different parts of their brains.
One area saves only pictures of things that we see.
Another area remembers how those things are arranged.
The area that stores smells and sounds is very close to the area that stores feelings.
That's why you feel happy when you smell homemade bread or sad when you hear a love song.

One day, a poor man named Scott, came to visit Taylor.
He said, “Taylor, I need your help. I am a poor man, a man with no money.”
Taylor looked at him kindly and answered, “I'll help you. Tell me what's wrong.”
Scott said, “Yesterday I stopped in front of the door of a restaurant.
The restaurant belonged to a rich man.
I only smelled the food.
However, he wanted me to pay him for the food.
And he called the judge.
The judge said I must go to the court today.
Please Taylor, can you help me?”
In the court the rich man began shouting angrily at Scott.
And the judge asked Scott to pay him right now.
Taylor stepped forward and then said, “This poor man is my elder brother. I will pay you instead.”
After he heard this, the rich man smiled, thinking about his payment.
Then Taylor took a bag of money from his belt, a bag of copper coins.
He bent down next to the rich man and shook the bag.
“Listen. Do you hear this sound?” said he.
“Of course I hear it,” shouted the rich man impatiently.
“Well, then,” answered Taylor, “the problem is solved. The debt is paid.
My brother has smelled your food, and you have heard his money.”
The poor man was saved.
Taylor

It's frustrating.
You're excited about the work you've just completed on your computer.
You start to print.
And suddenly it happens.
You run out of ink.
To make matters worse, when you take the empty color cartridge out of the printer and shake it, you can still hear ink inside.
Although only one color has run dry, the whole cartridge is now useless.
Obviously, throwing away unused ink translates into wasted money.
Well, the good news is that we recently introduced a system whereby each color is separated into individual ink tanks.
They're called “Eco Tanks” and they dramatically reduce a printer's running costs.

Dear Sally,
I'm so excited to hear that you're finally going to visit me here in Seoul.
I've really missed you since I moved away from Australia and I've been waiting for you to come for so long.
I've made an arrangement to take off a couple of weeks from work, so I'll be able to spend a lot of time with you.
Please let me know what you want to do here and I'll prepare everything for it.
You should check out the highlights of Korea online.
If you want to go somewhere outside of Seoul, just let me know and I'll be happy to rent a car.
I hope that I'll be able to do many things with you.
I can't wait to see you.
Bye for now,
Suzanne
Sally
Suzanne

When I was 10 years old, I took two of my friends to the station to show off my dad.
After showing them around the station, I asked Dad if we could each have a soda.
I detected just the slightest hesitation in my father's voice that day,
but he said “Sure” and gave us each a dime.
We all thanked my father and headed home for lunch.
That evening I happened to hear my parents talking.
Mom seemed upset with Dad, and said,
You should have just said you didn't have money for sodas.
That money was for your lunch.
The kids have to understand that we don't have any extra money and you need to have your lunch.”

When Amelia, one of my dearest friends, was ninety-nine, I, not knowing if she would live to be one hundred,
decided to ask the “big” question that is usually reserved for people who reach the age of one hundred.
I asked, “To what do you attribute your longevity?”
The usual answers we hear to that question are, “I didn't drink,” “I minded my own business,” and the like.
I had no idea what this healthy little ninety-nine-year-old would say.
What she said was profound.
It caused me to sit up and take notice: I have learned how not to be afraid.
Wow! What a statement! I realized―yes, this woman is fearless!
She didn't hide away at home and kept on moving out into the world despite the risks.

Did you hear the story about the fisherman who was fishing with the only thing the fish would bite on―frogs?

One morning just as my physician and his nurse started into the examining room where I waited, the doctor was called to the phone in the hallway.
Since he had left the door open, I could not help but hear his voice grow angry and loud.
"Absolutely under no circumstances are you to do that! If you value your life, you won't do that!"
I was wondering what on earth some patient had proposed when the nurse grinned and whispered, "It's all right. That was one of his kids."

Yes, your neighbors can hear it.
And no, they don't like it.

There is nothing so heartwarming as the love and loyalty of a dog, but it is better for the animal to be destroyed than to be left alone, neglected, bewildered and confused, brimming with love but with no one to accept it.

"Congratulations, Jill.
I hear that you came into quite an inheritance."
"Yes, I did. My grandmother left me the bulk of her estate when she passed away.
Now I'll have to start thinking of ways to invest it if I want to see it grow."
"True. And remember: don't put all your eggs in one basket."
"Never fear. I won't risk losing my money by investing all of it in a single place.
I plan to spread out my inheritance in real estate, government bonds, and other low-risk investments."
"Now you're talking! If you're interested, I have the name of a good financial counselor.
I'm certain that she could help you."
"Thanks. As soon as I'm ready, I'll look her up."

"I came here," said one, "because the urge to travel was in my blood.
City life bored me, and the smell of exhaust fumes on the highways made me sick.
I wanted to see the sun rise over new horizons and hear the flutter of birds that never had been seen by man; I wanted to leave my footprints on sand unmarked before I came.
In short, I wanted to see nature in the raw.
What about you?
"I came," the second man replied, "because my son was taking saxophone lessons."

A: Have you seen the new guy they hired as coach of Commodore High's football team? He's so short and puny.
He hardly looks like a football coach to me.
B: Listen, pal.
From what I hear, that guy is one of the best.
His size has nothing to do with his ability to produce a winning team.

My mother has gotten so disgusted with me that she refuses to wake me up.
She says, "If you don't hear the alarm, it's your tough luck."

When you hear that so-and-so has said something horrid about you, you
remember the ninety-nine times when you have refrained from uttering the
most just and well-deserved criticism of him, and forget the hundredth
time when in an unguarded moment you have declared what you believe to
be the truth about him. Is this the reward, you feel, for all your long
forbearance? Yet from his point of view your conduct appears exactly
what his appears to you; he never knows of the times when you have not
spoken, he knows only of the hundredth time when you did speak.

As a free-lance writer working at home, I squeeze in my household chores
between assignments―not always with the best results. For example, there
was the day I overheard my sons talking as they came home from school.
"I'm starved," said one. "I hope there's something good for dinner."
Replied the other, "Well, do you smell anything in the oven or do you
hear the typewriter?"

*startle 깜짝 놀라게 하다 cause (somebody) to be suddenly surprised, sometimes making them jump:
