Why do you keep silent? (X)

"Be quiet."
① Why are you so quiet?(왜 조용하죠?)

Although Mr. Vail expatiates fluently on the need for a community action program, I have yet to see him do anything constructive.

We use and abuse chimpanzees at will for medical research, for entertainment, or simply out of personal greed.
Being blind to their suffering, we don't try to understand how similar they are to us.
Chimpanzees nurture their young and mourn their dead.
They have distinct personalities and can express a variety of emotions from love to rage.
Yet for all their similarities, we appear to think little of their pain and suffering if our interests are served.
Watching chimps lying vacant eyed with tubes dangling from their arms,
we seem to enjoy torturing the creatures who look and behave so much like ourselves.

As a nation, the United States has doubled its living standard in the last 50 years.
Now Americans enjoy the fruits of an economy that provides not only basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter but also seemingly limitless luxuries.
If you doubt this, spend some time in other countries; the bountiful and luxurious nature of America's standard of living will be quite apparent.
At no other time in history have Americans experienced such along ride of high living.
The vast majority of people in the United States maintain a standard of living that far exceeds that of other countries.
Yet, notwithstanding such economic growth and material abundance,
the percentage of Americans who rate themselves as very happy has decreased since the 1950s.

You'll find the unknown word comes again, perhaps several times, and by the end of the chapter you'll have guessed its meaning.
That's how we learn the meaning of words in our own language, isn't it?
When I'm telling a story to children, they seldom stop to ask what a word means.
Even when they read, they don't run for the dictionary every time they see an unknown word.
When I read my New York Times these days I often find articles about space programs.
There are sometimes words I don't know ―and some of them are so new that they're not yet in the dictionaries.
But I'm slowly beginning to understand what some of the words mean ― simply by meeting them so often.

Question : Are police fair to minorities?
James : Most police do treat minorities fairly.
If one officer makes a mistake, you can read about it everywhere.
Yet, thousands of police ―black, white, men, women―have been killed over the past years.
Betty : Blacks are not treated fairly.
Blacks have been in this country more than 400 years.
Yet, we are still treated as undesirables who should pack their bags and go back to Africa.
That is why we get no respect from the police.
Joe : Most of the time we forget that police are, in fact, people.
And they react in the same way we react.
On the whole they are doing a fine job.
Betty :

Many people have been thinking of the possibility of sending human beings to Mars.
But we aren't really at that point yet.
Why? The first reason is safety.
Different nations have sent more than thirty probes toward Mars, but only one-third of them have survived the trip.
The second reason is cost.
It costs about a million dollars per kilogram to deliver robots to Mars.
It would take at least fifty billion dollars to get a person to Mars.
The last reason is the cosmic radiation that astronauts would absorb during the mission.
Much of this radiation is blocked on Earth by the Earth’s magnetic field.
Mars has no magnetic field.
* probe 탐사선

Life is unfair. Yet life is good.
Our ability to thoughtfully deal with the unfairness and build on the good can make the difference between a happy and unhappy life.
One reason so many of us cannot get out of pain easily is our tendency to think,
“That shouldn't have happened to me. That was unfair.”
When we allow such thinking to dominate our thoughts, we begin to bear resentments.

But, for many people, the decision to remain unwed comes down to one big advantage: freedom.

If we behave in a way that lets others know we are sure of ourselves and that we have a strong sense of personal worth, violence will disappear, except as a last resort to protect ourselves from those who have not yet gotten the message.
Unfortunately, explanations do not change behavior.
We can, however, change ourselves, and this will change the way people think about us.
If you continue to do what you always did, you will get what you always got.
You cannot change the world but you CAN change yourself.
When you behave differently, people will look at you with different eyes.

In heart-disease patients, lowering cholesterol with drugs almost certainly extends lives.
In people without heart disease, though, cholesterol-lowering drugs have not yet been shown to prolong life.
Although the drugs clearly reduce the risk of heart attacks, clinical trials suggest that such therapy somehow increases the chance of dying from suicide, accidents or cancer.
These studies fuel the argument for using drugs sparingly in people without heart-disease symptoms, since they stand to gain less than those who are already sick.

Yet Americans have many different ideas about how young people should be educated.
Consequently, there are almost as many kinds of schools and colleges as there are theories of education.

Yet the great possibilities of technology have created equally troubling ethical problems.
These questions, for instance, should be asked:
Should there be ethical limits to technological development?
If so, how do we decide where to draw the line?
And who should decide?

Things do look up sometimes.

DEAR ABBY: I'm 22, with two children, ages 3 and 4.
I'm divorced for the second time.
I have been dating a man who is 52 years old.
He is financially very well-off and wants to marry me.
He treats me very well and cares for my children.
Abby, do you think marriage between a 52-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman could ever work out?
I like him a lot, but I am not what you would call madly in love with him.
I was madly in love with my first two husbands, and they both treated me like dirt.
I haven't made any promises yet, and this man is not pressuring me, but I need your advice.
What do you think it takes to make a marriage work ?
TWO-TIME LOSER
DEAR T.T.L.: Don't marry anyone while you are still seeking advice.
All that is necessary for a marriage to succeed is for two people to really
need each other.

Nationwide figures for the year have yet to be compiled, but economists

Humans, computers and animals could be said in some sense to think. Yet the
thought processes of each of these would be different:each would have its own strengths
and its own weaknesses. The merit of a particular combination of strengths and
weaknesses would depend on the job to be done.

The number of physical phenomena amenable to scientific explanation increases
with each passing decade, whereas our scientific knowledge of human conduct
remains relatively insignificant. The teachings of Aristotle concerning astronomy and
physics have long since been superseded, but we yet to replace his doctrines on
ethics.

When you hear that so-and-so has said something horrid about you, you
remember the ninety-nine times when you have refrained from uttering the
most just and well-deserved criticism of him, and forget the hundredth
time when in an unguarded moment you have declared what you believe to
be the truth about him. Is this the reward, you feel, for all your long
forbearance? Yet from his point of view your conduct appears exactly
what his appears to you; he never knows of the times when you have not
spoken, he knows only of the hundredth time when you did speak.

When the newspaper chooses to make a scapegoat of some perhaps quite
harmless person, the results may be very terrible. Fortunately, as yet
this is a fate which most people escape through their obscurity; but as
publicity gets more and more perfect in its methods, there will be an
increasing danger in this novel form of social persecution. This is too
grave a matter to be treated with disdain by the individual who is its
victim, and whatever may be thought of the great principle of the freedom
of the press, I think the line will have to be drawn more sharply than
it is by the existing libel law.

Everybody in the world is seeking happiness―and there is one sure way
to find it. That is by controlling your thoughts. Happiness doesn't
depend on outer conditions. It depends on inner conditions.
It isn't what you have or what you are or where you are or what you are
doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it.
For example, two people may be in the same place, doing the same thing;
both may have about an equal amount of money and prestige―and yet one
may be miserable and the other happy. Why? Because of a different mental
attitude. I saw just as many happy faces among the Chinese coolies
sweating and toiling in the devastating heat of China for seven cents
a day as I see on Park Avenue.
"Nothing is good or bad," said Shakespeare, "but thinking makes it so."
Abe Lincoln once remarked, "Most folks are about as happy as they make
up their minds to be."

He has, we may suppose, a charming house, a charming wife, and charming
children. He wakes up early in the morning while they are still asleep
and hurries off to his office.
There it is his duty to display the qualities of a great executive; he
cultivates a firm jaw, a decisive manner of speech, and an air of
sagacious reserve calculated to impress everybody except the office boy.
He dictates letters, converses with various important persons on the
phone, studies the market, and presently has lunch with some person
with whom he is conducting or hoping to conduct a deal.
The same sort of thing goes on all the afternoon. He arrives home, tired,
just in time to dress for dinner. At dinner he and a number of other
tired men have to pretend to enjoy the company of ladies who have no
occasion to feel tired yet. How many hours it may take the poor man
to escape, it is impossible to foresee.

One may think that a new and strange flower would attract the eye more
readily than a known one, but it is not so: the old is discovered much
more easily than the new.
"Out of sight, out of mind," says the proverb; and conversely that which
is not yet in mind will long stay out of sight.
But when once a new flower, even a rare one, has been discovered, it is
curious how often it will soon be noticed afresh in another place:
this must be the experience of all who have made systematic search
for flowers, and it explains why the beginner will frequently see but
little where the expert will see much.

A young lady dismissed the young man to whom she was engaged because he drank.
A few days after she had told him she would never speak to him again, a little
boy brought a note from the wretched young man.
The note read this: "Faithless, yet still beloved Fanny! My sufferings are
more than I can bear. I cannot live without your love. I have therefore just
taken poison, the effect of which I am now beginning to feel. When you read
these lines, I shall have joined the great majority. See that I am decently
buried, and shed a silent tear over my tomb in remembrance of the days gone
by―Your dead George."
When the young lady had finished reading the note, she asked the boy who had
brought it what he was waiting for.
"The gentleman who sent it told me to wait for an answer," was the reply.

A:I wonder if they have set a date for the wedding.
B:No, not yet. I hear that they are planning to go to Thailand for their
honeymoon.
I wonder if you can help me?
'날짜를 정한다'란 표현을 쓸 땐 set a date 혹은decide on a date라고 쓴다.
회화에선 I have heard표현을 줄여서 I hear라고 간결하게 표현한다. No, net
yet은 No, they haven't set a date yet을 줄인 표현이다.

A:Have they set a date for the wedding?
B:No, not yet. But Susan says they'd like to get married in November
or December. Then they'll go to Hawaii for their honeymoon.
긍정의 대답으로는 Yes, they have. No, they haven't.
그러나 간단히 No, not yet로 답한다.
set a date(날짜를 정하다)=decide on a day when it will take place. They'd
like~=They would like~, 또는 They want~. Marry me.
Gabdol got
married with Gabsoon으로 한다. Marry with me

In a few cases this has been the consequence of a general hostility to the whole idea of law, China being the most important example.
Confucian teaching (6th century BC) opposed the use of civil law as a major means of social control, and this influence remained powerful there and in Japan until the 20th century.

It is so very clear from her words and actions that Mother Teresa was a living saint; yet, when she was alive, a prominent columnist castigated her, implying that she was a sexual pervert and arguing that her charitable work merely served to buttress the social, economic and political status quo.
Why the vicious attack on Mother Teresa's character? Because those who already have lost their purity naturally envy, hate, ridicule and persecute people with purity of heart, mind and soul who are trying to help young people remain pure, too.

Whether or not to legalize euthanasia is thorny issue for most people.
It is clear that a lot of people will have to change their ways of thinking about death before it will become legal.
Perhaps euthanasia is an idea whose time has not yet come.

Cigarette smoking is still new in Asia, so cancer rates from smoking haven't started to rise yet.
As soon as they do, governments will start to act, just as they have done in the west.
The sad thing is that millions of people will have to die first.

Over the last 400,000 years the Earth's climate has been unstable, with very significant temperature changes, going from a warm climate to an ice age in as rapidly as a few decades.
These rapid changes suggest that climate may be quite sensitive to internal or external climate forcings and feedbacks.
As can be seen from the blue curve(lower), temperatures have been less variable during the last 10,000 years.
Based on the incomplete evidence available, it is unlikely that global mean temperatures have varied by more than 1°C in a century during this period.
The information presented on this graph indicates a strong correlation between carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere and temperature.
A possible scenario: anthropogenic emissions of GHGs could bring the climate to a state where it reverts to the highly unstable climate of the pre-ice age period.
Rather than a linear evolution, the climate follows a non-linear path with sudden and dramatic surprises when GHG levels reach an as-yet unknown trigger point.

Winterthur remains, then, a house in which a collection of furniture and
architectural elements has been assembled. Like an English country
house, it is an organic structure; the house, as well as the collection
and manner of displaying it to the visitor, has changed over the years.
The changes have coincided with developing concepts of the American
arts, increased knowledge on the part of collectors and students, and a
progression toward the achievement of a historical effect in period-room
displays. The rooms at Winterthur have followed this current, yet still
retained the character of a private house.

One anomaly is the subspecies of red crossbill known as the Newfoundland
crossbill. This bird has a large, robust bill, yet most of
Newfoundland's conifers have small cones, the same kind of cones that
the slender-billed white-wings rely on.

A useful theory, in addition to explaining past observation, helps to
predict events that have not as yet been observed. After a theory has
been publicized, scientists design experiments to test the theory. If
observations confirm the scientists' predictions, the theory is
supported. If observations do not confirm the predictions, the
scientists must search further. There may be a fault in the experiment,
or the theory may have to be revised or rejected.

The financial situation isn't bad yet, but we believe that we have some
vital information and, if it is correct, unemployment will soon become a
serious problem.

AIDS victims suffer knowing that there is not yet a cure for their
disease; it is terminal. To add to this suffering, AIDS victims often
experience discrimina- tion. They might not be hired for a job or they
may lose a job if it is known that they have AIDS; they may not be able
to rent apartments as easily as they could without the disease; the
courts will often convict people who have purposely spread the AIDS
virus, imposing unusually harsh sentences on them; and insurance
companies may refuse to offer health or life insurance coverage to
clients who indicate that they are HIV positive and, therefore, at high
risk of getting AIDS.
