▷▷ 이말은 hockey 경기에서 주로 사용되었던 용어이다. 한 선수가 혼자
한 game에서 3점을 냈을때 이를 가르켜서 hat trick이라고 한다.
그런데 이말은 원래 hockey용어가 아니고, cricket에서 나온것이다.
cricket경기에서는 한 투수가 3타자를 잇달아 out시키는 것을 가르켜
hat trick이라고 한다. 이런 이름이 붙여진 것은 cricket이 처음으로
영국에서 유행했을때, 이런 성적을 낸 선수에게 bonus로 모자를 주었던
관습때문에 생겨난 말이다. 그래서 투수가 잇달아 세 타자를 out시키는
것을 상으로 모자를, hat를 받을만큼 뛰어난 기술, trick이라는 뜻에서
hat trick이라는 이름이 붙은 것이다.
여기서 얘기하는 trick은 속임수라는 얘기가 아니라, 뛰어난 기술,
비법이라는 의미로 쓰이고있는 것이다.
Hat trick이라고 하는 말은 조금씩 그 의미가 다른 기는 하지만, ice
hockey나 축구, 야구, 심지어 경마등 다른 운동경기에서도 사용이 되고
있다. 야구에서는 한 선수가 한 시합에서 1루타, 2루타, 3루타, 홈런을
모두 치는 것을 가르켜서 hat trick이라고 하고, ice hockey나 축구에
서 말하는 hat trick이라고 하는 것은 한 시합에서 3골이상을 넣는 것
을 두고 하는 얘기다. 또 경마에서는 한 기수가 3회연속 우승했을때
hat trick에 성공했다고 이야기한다.

(프리질랜드에서는 갈색모자를 쓰지 말아라.)
먼저 프리질랜드는 네델란드의 최북부에 위치 하고 있는 주
이지요. 옛날 프리질랜드에서는 사람들이 모자를 많이 썼다고 합니다.
가장 아래에 털실로 짠 모자를 쓰고 그위에 비단으로 만든 테두리없는
모자를 쓰고 그 위에 금속으로 된 이슬람교도들이 쓰는 터번을 쓰고
마지막으로 끈을 턱 밑으로 매는 보넷을 썼다고합니다. 그런데 어느날
프리질랜드를 지나치는 한 이방인이 챙이 넓은 평범한 갈색 중절모를
쓰고 있었다고 합니다. 그것을 본 프리질랜드 사람들은 오히려 이런
모자가 특이하다고 느껴져서 그를 난폭하게 밀치면서 조롱을 했다고
합니다. 비록 그 이방인의 모자가 평범한 것이기는 했지만 단지 프리
질랜드 주민들과 다르다고 해서 그런 봉변을 당했던 것입니다. 그래서
Never wear a brown hat in Pressiland. 라는 말은 '로마에 있을 때에
는 로마의 법을 따르다. (When in Rome do as Roman's do.)' 라는 표
현과 같은 뜻을 지니게 된 것입니다.

그 모자 안쪽에 명함을 넣어두었는데 어느 날 그 모자를 잃어 버렸어요.
이 모자 안에 내 명함이 있는 걸 보니 내 모자임에 틀림없군요.
자, 이제 모자를 제게 돌려주시죠.”
The old man thought for a while what he should do.
At last the old man handed the hat to the young man and said,
“In fact, I’m a farmer and a few days ago, in a moonless night, a thief stole my favorite cow and dropped this hat unconsciously.
You are insisting that this hat is yours.
Thank God, you can take your lost hat and I can take my stolen cow back.”
At this the young man hesitantly said, “May I be excused a moment? Nature calls me.”
The young man stood up and went away in a hurry, leaving the hat behind. He never returned!
노인은 어떻게 해야 하나 잠시 생각했다.
마침내 노인은 모자를 젊은이에게 건네주면서 말했다.
“사실 난 농부라네.

Would you...?와 Could you...?는 Will you...?나 Can you...?보다 더욱 공손한

where Seomoon Market is?로 말한다. 길 안내할 때에는 Please를 붙여서
말할 필요가 없다.
