With the turn-of-the-century Crafts movement and the discovery of
nontraditional sources of inspiration, such as wooden African figures
and masks, there arose a new urge for hands-on, personal execution of
art and an interaction with the medium. Even as early as the 1880's and
1890's, nonconformist European artists were attempting direct carving.
By the second decade of the twentieth century, Americans ― Laurent and
Zorach most notably ― had adopted it as their primary means of working.

어린시절에는 왜 그리도 궁금한 것이 많았는지 모른다. 솥뚜껑이 뜨겁다는
말을 듣고도 뜨거운 것이 어떤 것인가를 알아보기 위해 손을 대보고 놀라
기도 하고,참기름이 미끄럽다는 것을 알기 위해 쏟아놓고 손으로 문질러 봐
야 직성이 풀렸었다. 'get hands-on experience'는 「손을 대보고서 아는 경
험」이라는 식의 표현으로 「산 경험을 하다」라는 뜻을 가진다.
Mom:Dinner will be ready soon. Please go wash your hands.
Son:I've already washed my hands.
Mom:Good for you.
Son:What are you cooking, Mom? Let me have a look at it.
Mom:Be careful. The handle of the pot is pretty hot.
Son:Ouch!
Mom:Oh my, let me have a look at your hand. Hmm, it's OK, I guess. I
told you to be careful.
Son:I've wondered what would happen.
Mom:Now, you've got hands-on experience. From now on, you should be
very careful not to put your hands on hot objects.
