Sociologists say that people prefer the food that they grew up with.
As a cultural group, we learn to like what is available to us.
This is why in Africa some people eat termites, in Asia some people eat dog meat, and in Europe some people eat blood sausages.
Sometimes we need to change our eating habits.
If we move or travel to a new place with a different culture, our favorite meat, fruit, and vegetables may not be available to us.
As a result, we have to eat food that is different from the food we are used to.
Slowly, this strange food becomes familiar to us and our tastes change.

We are trained to control bad feelings such as anger or sorrow in public and to think before we act on them.
That doesn't necessarily mean we should make this kind of control a habit in our personal lives.
My advice? Unexpressed feelings are harmful.
If you're not alone, simply postpone them for a few moments.
Then go somewhere private and do whatever the feeling seems to want you to do.
Cry, tremble, or shake your fists.
In short, expressing feelings is good for your mental health.

The more heartless our community becomes, the less space we seem to have in our hearts for others.
Nearly all the people you happen to meet in life merit your consideration.
Many of them will be there to help you to deliver your pizza, bag your groceries, and make you coffee.
And millions more people, most of whom you will never meet, won't help you, indeed can't help you,
and may not even be able to help themselves.
They also deserve your respect.
If you are not in the habit of being nice to all these people, then get in the habit now.

They were born out of the habit of Korean housewives of making good use of small, otherwise useless, pieces of leftover cloth.
They are easily folded and take up little space.
So they have become a part of everyday Korean customs and practices.
Although they were created for everyday use, they have added style to special occasions.
A typical example of this is to wrap wedding gifts.
They are also convenient and safe when used to carry things.
Furthermore, they are more durable, economical and environment-friendly than paper or plastic bags.

Credit card misuse remains at an alarmingly high level.
It is a cause not only of personal tragedies, but also of more serious social problems.
But how can we deal with this situation?
Whatever solution we choose, it must focus on changing consumers' spending habits for the better.
Up to now, people have been encouraged to use credit cards for various reasons.
This was good for those who used their cards wisely, but many have taken on large debts as a result.
Now is the time, therefore, to emphasize sensible individual credit card use.
Various financial support programs can be helpful in this, but unless consumers spend within their means, there can be no solution.

Eagles, soaring high and fearless, have always made people think of strength, freedom, and courage.
For this reason, countries, empires, and rulers from ancient Egypt up to the modern United States have made eagles their symbol.
Most Americans have seen enough pictures and emblems to recognize an eagle.
Surprisingly, few know much about the bird.
Even people who study birds, do not know a great deal.
It is difficult to study the eagle's habits because it is dangerous and fierce.
Also, it nests high up in trees or on cliffs which are difficult to reach.

The rate for heart disease among men in China is one-sixteenth the rate in the U.S.
The rate for colon cancer is only about two-fifths of the U.S. rate.
Scientists believe that the poor diet of North American is killing them.
The average citizen consumes too much meat, sugar and salt and not enough vegetables, grains, and fiber.
And these unhealthy eating habits are prime suspects in several serious diseases: heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some cancers.
Some call these diseases “diseases of wealth.”
As countries become richer, people begin to eat more meat.
Heart disease and certain kinds of cancer increase.
This is happening in Japan and in the wealthier parts of China.

School location can influence children's physical health.
When new schools are built at a long distance from where their families live, children need to be driven to school,
and they are deprived of an opportunity for exercise.
On the other hand, if schools are located within walking or biking distance from where they live,
and if safe routes to school are provided, then children can make walking or biking a part of their daily lives,
establishing good habits that can last lifetime.
Besides, when new schools are built, it is considered whether the places where new schools will be built provide plenty of light and fresh air.

It takes time and effort to change the way you think and act.
Consider the way you brush your teeth.
This is a simple habit pattern.
But a considerable amount of effort is required to change it.
Before beginning to brush, you would have to remind yourself about the new method you plan to use.
While brushing, your mind would wander and you would catch yourself returning to your old method.
After a second reminder you would start using the new method only to forget and have to catch yourself again.
And so it would go until enough time and energy had been spent to make the new method as automatic as the old method was.

Nearly all runaways come from homes in which there are clear problems.
In any case, it is important for parents to be aware of the possibility that their child may run away,
and to be aware of the warning signs that often precede it.
One is a sudden change in behavior.
This change may be one of eating or sleeping habits.
Changes in social habits can also indicate problems, particularly when a teenager becomes withdrawn from friends and outside contacts.
If a young person begins to show sudden mood swings, going from very happy to very sad, for example,
there is a good chance that he or she is undergoing some sort of stress that is difficult to resolve.

A recent study examined the Internet habits of 20 people who spent more than 30 non-working hours a week online over a three-year period.
Through research, it was found that these participants' habits met the criteria for a psychological disorder,
or more specifically, impulse control disorder.
The findings of this study have given rise to a new term, “Net compulsion,” to describe Internet addiction.
Since these findings, Net compulsions have been further defined to include “compulsive online gambling” and “online auction addiction.”

In the Solomon Islands in the south pacific, some villagers practice a unique form of logging.
If a tree is too large to cut down with an ax, the natives cut it down by yelling at it.
Woodsmen with special powers creep up on a tree just at dawn and suddenly scream at it at the top of their lungs.
They continue this for thirty days.
The tree dies and falls over.
The theory is that the shouting kills the spirit of the tree.
According to the villagers, it always works.
Ah, those poor naive innocents.

A strong, healthy body can do an amazing job of resisting disease.
There are many things you can do to keep your body healthy, such as eating proper foods.
Getting plenty of sleep is another good habit.
A tired, run-down body is like a car that needs a tune-up; it does not function efficiently.
Exercise is important in reducing stress and keeping the body healthy.
Regular, moderate exercise will relieve muscle tension, keep the muscles firm, and make the heart and blood vessels healthy.
Exercise, like sleep, makes the body function more efficiently.
People who exercise regularly can even strengthen their hearts.

Americans today have different eating habits because their lifestyles have changed.
American lifestyles now include growing numbers of people who live alone, single parents and children, and double-income families.
These changing lifestyles are responsible for the increasing number of people who must rush meals or sometimes skip them altogether.
Many Americans have less time than ever before to spend preparing food.
Partly as a consequence of this limited time, 60% of all American homes now have microwave ovens.
They also eat out four times a week on the average.
The way people live determines the way they eat.

The great and indispensable help to success is character.
Character is crystallized habit, the result of training and conviction.
Every character is influenced by the heredity, environment and education.
But these apart, if every man were not to a great extent the architect of his own character, he would be a fatalist, an irresponsible creature of circumstances.

Politicians are not the sole sources of a nation's success and grandeur.
There is much more to national enrichment, material and moral, than the people who make its laws and run its institutions of governance.
Those important things depend on other things―habits, mores, customs, values, virtues―that are shaped, vivified, nurtured and husbanded by people often working far from the public arena.

Some people think that the best time to begin studying a foreign language is in childhood, and that the younger you are, the easier it is to learn another language.
There is little evidence, however, that children in language classrooms learn foreign languages any better than adults (people over age 15) in similar classroom situations.
In fact, adults have many advantages over children: better memories, more efficient ways of organizing information, better study habits, and greater ability to handle complex mental tasks.
In addition, adults are often better motivated than children: they see learning a foreign language as necessary for education or career.

The new unemployment rate: 8.9%. Everyone who hears that percentage will know
it is fraught with troublesome forebodings. Yet the modern habit of mistaking statistics

A bottle-feed baby is often encouraged to finish off the last drop of his formula,

to solid foods, with their high calorie content, earlier than do breast-feeders. Such

It is evident that no professional writer can afford only to write when he
feels like it. If he waits till he is in the mood, till he has the
inspiration as he says, he waits indefinitely and ends by producing
little or nothing. The professional writer creates the mood.
He has his inspiration too, but he controls and subdues it to his bidding
by setting himself regular hours of work. But in time writing becomes
a habit, and like the old actor in retirement, who gets restless when
the hour arrives at which he has been accustomed to go down to the theater
and make up for the evening performance, the writer itches to get to his
pens and paper at the hours at which he has been used to write.

Sometimes slowness and depth of response are intimately connected.
Time is required in order to digest impressions, and translate them into
substantial ideas. The 'slow but sure' person, whether man or child, is
one in whom impressions sink and accumulate, so that thinking is done at
a deeper level of value than by those with a lighter load.
Many a child is rebuked for slowness, for not answering promptly, when
his forces are taking time to gather themselves together to deal
effectively with the problem at hand. In such cases, failure to afford
time and leisure encourages, if it does not actually create, habits of
speedy, but snapshot and superficial, judgment.

Very early in my boyhood I had acquired the habit of going about alone
to amuse myself in my own way.
My mother would miss me when looking out to see what the children were
doing, and I would be called and searched for, to be found hidden away
somewhere in the wood.
This distressed her very much; then to her relief and joy she discovered
that I was there with a motive which she could understand: that I was
watching some living things.
And as she loved all living things herself, she was quite satisfied that
I was not going queer in my head, for that was what she had been fearing.

When the first colonists arrived in North America the hand of friendship
was extended by the red man, agreements were drawn up and boundaries
were laid down. As time passed, however, more and more of the Indian
lands were swallowed up by the white settlers. Humiliated and confused,
the red man was pushed further west until there was scarcely enough room
for him in a land that was rightfully his. Some of the greatest and most
far-sighted of the Indian chiefs saw that the only chance for the Indians
was in uniting the tribes against their common enemy. But the habits of
the Indians made this impossible. Inter-tribal warfare was their way of
life.

I look forward to old age without dismay. When Lawrence of Arabia was
killed I read in an article contributed by a friend that it was his
habit to ride his motor-bicycle at an excessive speed with the notion
that an accident would end his life while he was still in full
possession of his powers and so spare him the indignity of old age.
If this is true it was a great weakness in that strange and somewhat
theatrical character. It showed want of sense. For the complete life,
the perfect pattern, includes old age as well as youth and maturity.

The habit of thinking by means of comparison is a fatal one.
When anything pleasant occurs, it should be enjoyed to the full, without
stopping to think that it is not so pleasant as something else that may
possibly be happening to someone else.
"Yes," says the envious man, "this is a sunny day, and it is springtime,
and the birds are singing, but I understand that the springtime in
Sicily is a thousand times more beautiful."

We cannot train ourselves to bear disaster by thinking of all the
particular disasters that might happen to us.
To do that produces a habit of panic, not of preparation; and we
can never prepare in detail for every disaster that may come.
Nor can we steel ourselves against a possible sorrow by refusing
to enjoy any actual joy.
For joy increases the health of the mind, and so strengthens it
against the attacks of sorrow.
In joy we forget ourselves; and self-forgetfulness is the best
possible habit for the mind to acquire.
Indeed, if we can acquire it and maintain it through all changes
of circumstance, we have learnt complete adaptability and the
secret of life.

There was in my house a practice of reading aloud, which I regard as of
very great importance in developing a feeling for literature.
Most moderns, I find, do not regard literature as intended to be spoken
but only as addressed to the eye, with the result that they lose all
sense of rhythm.
One of the simplest requisites of a good style is that it can be read
aloud without causing difficulty in breathing, but this requisite is
not felt by those who have never acquired the habit of reading aloud.

Most of us like the conversational parts of a story better than the others.
This is partly mental laziness, but is also due to the fact that
conversation shows character more quickly than anything else.
Study a few conversational pages in any standard novel known to you, and
note how readily you can build up a mental picture of the speakers from
what they say and the way in which they say it.
Careful study of conversation of this kind is also helpful in forming
habits of pleasant, straightforward talk―a very rare accomplishment.

Growing as a person may take you to new places and present new
challenges. These may be stressful, but feeling stress is a natural,
necessary part of recognizing a weakness and trying out a new behavior.
It is often comfortable and easy to stay the way we are. Giving up old
comforts and habits is very hard. It is small wonder, then, that people
dislike changing. Yet it needs to be remembered that efforts to change
lead frequently to important improvement and growth in our lives.

Buy Nothing Day is an international day for buying nothing at all. It
asks us to think about what we buy and whether buying more actually
increases our quality of life. Every product we buy has an effect on the
environment. Even before we spend our money, making, advertising, and
packaging what we buy can cost a lot in pure water, air, and soil. In
short, our shopping habits can have considerable effects on the
environment.

After all, a football team is a vessel for a nation's habits and aspirations, psychoses and strengths, triumphs and disappointments.
Brazil's beautiful game. France's Les Bleus. Italy's Azurri. Nigeria's Super Eagles. They are more than teams.
They are 11-man embodiments of national pride and passion.
And yet the World Cup may be the only medium where national pride can be flagrantly, vividly manifest without diplomats being recalled and troops mobilized.

Firstly, they had to, or wanted to, imitate the colonizer by adopting the latter's habits and ways of thinking.
Their imitation resulted, not just in the simple reproduction of those traits, but in a sense of inferiority.
Secondly, colonized people have double standards for judging people: one for their fellows, and another for their colonizers.
This self-division is a direct result of imposed colonialism.
These contradictory factors constituted the structure of feelings and attitudes of the colonized people for the following generations, even after independence has been achieved.

Before 1987 there were no foreign fast food restaurants in Korea,
but within just a few years, Koreans were munching on pizzas, hamburgers, french fries, and donuts.
By 1995, when a survey of Korean habits was taken, 29 percent of teenagers and 21 percent of all Koreans said that they liked western food better than Korean food.

The behavior of common and lesser kestrels may illustrate different
feeding behaviors of similar birds with different roosting habits. The
common kestrel hunts vertebrate animals in a small, familiar hunting
ground, whereas the very similar lesser kestrel feeds on insects over a
large area. The common kestrel roosts and hunts alone, but the lesser
kestrel roosts and hunts in flocks, possibly so one bird can learn from
others where to find insect swarms.

Hotels were among the earliest facilities that bound the United States
together. They were both creatures and creators of communities, as well
as symptoms of the frenetic quest for community. Even in the first part
of the nineteenth century, Americans were already forming the habit of
gathering from all corners of the nation for both public and private,
business and pleasure purposes.

In savanah country huge herds of games support prides containing 20 lions or more.
But to live here lions have had to change their habits - prides are much smaller

The wrasse is a small, brightly colored fish that has the habit of picking
parasites.

Barracudas even permit the spaces between their razor-sharp teeth
to be cleaned without harm to the dental assistant. Some other small fish have
color patterns and swimming habits that make them indistinguishable from the
wrasse. The imposters do not pick parasites; instead, they take bites from the
soft tissue of the unsuspectin fish.

An electronic funds transfer system-called E.F.T. in banking circles-is
replacing the paperwork in banking processes. With its use of computers to carry
out financial transactions, E.F.T. is changing the way people pay bills and may
eliminate the necessity for carrying cash. But there is a snag in this
technological revolution, and that is the reluctance of consumers to change
their habits. Regardless of whether or not consumers like it, bankers are
determined to fully implement the new system. The full use of E.F.T.
nevertheless may be a quarter century away.

A survey studied the differences between teenage boys' and girls' reading habits.
According to the report, many more girls(77%) than boys(6%) read fashion and beauty magazines.
More boys(47%) than girls(7%) read magazines about video games, but an equal amount of each likes to read adventure stories and newspapers.
Girls also read more material about celebrities and social issues such as crime, drugs, or poverty.
Boys, on the other hand, read more about sports.
