At last the old man handed the hat to the young man and said,
“In fact, I’m a farmer and a few days ago, in a moonless night, a thief stole my favorite cow and dropped this hat unconsciously.
You are insisting that this hat is yours.
Thank God, you can take your lost hat and I can take my stolen cow back.”
At this the young man hesitantly said, “May I be excused a moment? Nature calls me.”
The young man stood up and went away in a hurry, leaving the hat behind. He never returned!

Conversation can be on two levels―the content one and the feeling one.
For example, yesterday my friend Scott came over and told me what Ann had done to him.

me three times a week, and I'll cure you."
"How much do you charge?"
"A hundred dollars per visit."
"I'll think about it."
Jackson never went back. Six months later he met the doctor on the street.
"Why didn't you ever come to see me again?" asked the psychiatrist.
"For a hundred bucks a visit? A bartender cured me for ten dollars."
"Is that so! How?"
"He told me to cut the legs off the bed."

The pet-shop customer couldn't believe his good fortune. The parrot he had
just bought could recite Shakespeare's sonnets, imitate opera stars and
intone Homer's epic poems in Greek. And he cost only $600.
Once the man got the bird home, however, not another word passed his beak.
After three weeks the disconsolate customer returned to the shop and asked
for his money back. "When we had this bird," said the proprietor, "he
could recite poetry and sing like an angel. Now you want me to take him
back when he's no longer himself? Well, all right. Out of the goodness
of my heart I'll give you $100." Reluctantly the man accepted his loss.
Just as the door shut behind him he heard the parrot say to the shop
owner, "Don't forget―my share is $250."

After directory assistance gave me my boyfriend's new telephone number,
I dialed him and got a woman. "Is Mike there?" I asked.
"He's in the shower," she responded.
"Please tell him his girlfriend phoned," I said and hung up.
When he didn't return the call, I dialed again. This time a man answered.
"This is Mike," he said.
"You're not my boyfriend!" I exclaimed.
"I know," he replied. "That's what I've been trying to tell my wife for
the past half-hour."

During my lunch hour, I made a purchase at a crowded bookstore and decided
to charge it. The two clerks were harried, and my transaction was traded
from one woman to another.
When I got outside, I noticed I had both the customer and merchant copies
of the charge form. I thought to myself that I'd just gotten a free book.
But by the time I sat down at my desk, my conscience was bothering me,
and I reached for the phone. When a clerk answered, I explained the
situation and told her I'd return their copy after work.
"Thank you," the woman replied. "I'm glad you called. You left your
charge card on the counter."

After parking our car at my daughter's apartment late Saturday night,
I noticed the one next to it had its lights on. I left a note on the
windshield with the telephone number, saying I'd come down and give
the battery a boost if needed.
About 3 a.m. the phone rang and a man said, "I'm sorry to bother you,
but I read your note and sure would appreciate a boost."
I turned on my car lights to see what we were doing, and after I got
him started, he offered to pay me. "No thanks," I replied. "Just
help some other motorist sometime."
When I went to my car on Sunday morning, I discovered I had left
my lights on, and the battery was dead.

Trying to get my teen-age son to clean his room was a monumental struggle.
Finally I threatened, "If you don't have that room cleaned by Monday,
I'll clean it for you!"
Monday morning came, and it was still a disaster. As he left for school,
I reminded him of my threat. As it happened, I was so busy I never got
to it. When he came home, he walked straight by me without saying a word.
A few moments later he came back into the kitchen, put his arm around
my shoulders and said, "Thanks, Mom, you cleaned my room just the way
I like it."

It was my first job, and I was determined to be a terrific waitress.
I would serve my customers efficiently and cheerfully, as I would like
to be treated.
The restaurant wasn't busy, and I was able to give the couple seated
at my table my complete attention. We chatted amiably as I took their
order, and I soon served them their meal. Then I stood across the room,
delighted when they waved at me. I waved back.
We kept up this friendly interchange until the man got up and came over.
"Would you bring us some silverware?" he asked.
