The story goes that Alfred once took refuge in the cottage of a poor
peasant. The good wife was left in ignorance of his identity and therefore had
little time for this seemingly idle fellow. For Alfred spent his time gazing
into the fire and dreaming of further plans to defeat the Danes. Called upon
some errand, the good wife drew his attention to some cakes which were baking in
front of the fire, and told him that he must watch them carefully during her
absence. Alas! So preoccupied was the English king that the good wife found, on
her return, nothing but a few remains of her cakes. Whereupon, the angry woman
seized the royal hair and proceeded to scold him severely. So runs the story.
Whether it is truth or legend we cannot confirm.

Everybody in the world is seeking happiness―and there is one sure way
to find it. That is by controlling your thoughts. Happiness doesn't
depend on outer conditions. It depends on inner conditions.
It isn't what you have or what you are or where you are or what you are
doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it.
For example, two people may be in the same place, doing the same thing;
both may have about an equal amount of money and prestige―and yet one
may be miserable and the other happy. Why? Because of a different mental
attitude. I saw just as many happy faces among the Chinese coolies
sweating and toiling in the devastating heat of China for seven cents
a day as I see on Park Avenue.
"Nothing is good or bad," said Shakespeare, "but thinking makes it so."
Abe Lincoln once remarked, "Most folks are about as happy as they make
up their minds to be."

The Girl With April In Her Eyes
Chris De Burgh
There once was a king who called for the spring
For his world was still covered in snow
But the spring had not been for he was wicked and mean
In his winter fields nothing would grow
And when a traveller called seeking help at the door
Only food and a bed for the night
He ordered his slave to turn her away
The girl with April in her eyes
-
Oh~~oh~ on and on she goes
Through the winter's night the wild wind and the snow
Ah~~ah~ on and on she rides
Someone help the girl with April in her eyes
-
She rode through the night till she came to the light
Of a humble man's home in the woods
He brought her inside by the fire light she died
And he buried her gently and good
Oh the morning was bright all the world snow white
But when he came to the place where she lay
His field was ablaze with flowers on the grave
Of the girl with April in her eyes

The First time
Surface
You know I won't forget
The times we shared together holding hands
And walking in the park
Sometimes we'll have to do it all again
We were so happy then
I have no regrets
Can't you tell from the look on my face
That I love you more today
**
The first time I looked into your eyes I cried
Do you remember the first time
When we fell in love
You looked into my eyes wiped the tears away
The first time when we fell in love
-
Although some time has passed
I still remember just like it was yesterday
But time is movin' fast
The love I have for you time won't ever change
I'll always feel the same now until the end
Memories we share will live forever
Deep inside my heart I know I'll never forget
** repeat twice
-

Against all odds
How can I just let you walk away
Just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking every breath with you
You're the only one who really knew me at all
-
How can you just walk away from me
When all I can do is watch you leave
'Cause we shared the laughter
and the pain and even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all
-
So take a look at me now
There's just an empty space
There's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
-
Take a good look at me now
There's just an empty space
And you coming back to me
Is against all the odds
And that's what I got to take
-
I wish I could just make you turn around
Turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you
So many reasons why
You're the only one who really knew me at all
-
So take a look at me now
There's just an empty space
There's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
-
Take a good look at me now
There's just an empty space
But to wait for you is all I can do
And that's what I've got to face
-
Take a good look at me now
'Cause I'll still be standing there
And you coming back to me is against all the odds
And that's what I got to take
-
Take a good look at me now

It should really be a most discouraging fact that there is nothing much
one does for the good student, and nothing very much that one can do for
the poor one. In the case of the brilliant successes among former
students of mine, I am convinced they were in essence as sopho- mores
what they are now. If they are now learned men, they were already on the
road to learning in their sophomore year.

Hey, do you guys know what you're doing for New Year's?
Gee, what?! What is wrong with New Year's?
Nothing for you, you have Paolo. You don't have to face the horrible pressures of this holiday
desperate scramble to find anything with lips just so you can have someone to kiss when the ball drops!! Man, I'm talking loud!
Well, for your information, Paolo is gonna be in Rome this New Year, so I'll be just as pathetic as the rest of you.
Yeah, you wish!
It's just that I'm sick of being a victim of this Dick Clark holiday. I say this year, no dates, we make a pact. Just the six of us- dinner.
Yeah, okay. Alright.
/ Y'know, I was hoping for a little more enthusiasm.
Phoebe, you're on.
/ Oh, oh, good.

C'mon up.
Oh, good. Rog is here.
What's the matter with Rog?
Oh, it's nothing, it's a little thing I hate that guy.
What, so he was a little analytical.
That's what he does, y'know?
C'mon, he's not that bad.
Y'see, that's where you're wrong.
Why would I marry her if I thought on any level thatthat she was a lesbian?
I dunno.
Maybe you wanted your marriage to fail.
Why? Why would I why? Why? Why? Why?
I don't know.
Maybe maybe low self-esteem, maybe maybe to compensate for overshadowing a sibling, maybe you
Wait-wait, go back to that sibling thing.
Well, I don't know.
I mean, it's conceivable that you wanted to sabotage your marriage so that the sibling would feel less of a failure in the eyes of the parents.

Ok, ok, Roger was creepy, but he was nothing compared to Pete Carney.
Which one was Pete Carney?
Pete the Weeper?
Remember that guy who used to cry every time we had sex.
"Was it good for you?"
Yeah, well, I'll take a little crying any day over
Howard-the-'I-win'-guy.
"I win! I win!"
I went out with the guy for two months, I didn't get to win once.
How did we end up with these jerks?
Maybe we're some kinda magnets.
I know I am.
That's why I can't wear a digital watch.

Where were we?
Oh, OK... five card draw,
uh... jacks or better... nothing wild, everybody ante.
Look, Rachel, we don't have to do this.
Yes, we do.

I'm in for fifty cents.

I'm in.
I see your fifty cents... and I raise you...
five dollars.
I thought, uh... it was a fifty cent limit.
Well, I just lost a job, and I'd like to raise the bet five bucks. Does anybody have a problem with that?

No, I fold.
What do you mean, you fold? Hey, come on! What is this? I thought that 'once the cards were dealt, I'm not a nice guy.'
I mean, what, were you just full of it?
I'm in.
받아
How many you want?
One.
한 장
Dealer takes two.
- What do you bet?
- I bet two dollars.
OK... see your two...

I see your twenty,
raise you twenty-five.
See your twenty-five...and...uh,
Monica, get my purse.
Rachel, there's nothing in it.
OK, then get me your purse.
OK, here you go. Good luck.
Thank you. I saw your twenty-five, and I raise you...
seven.
7!

17!
Joey, I'm a little shy.
That's OK, Ross, you can ask me. What?
What do you need, what do you need?
Fifteen.
15
- Alright, here's ten.
- Here, I got five, I got five.
- Thank you.
- Good luck.
OK, I am calling your seventeen. What do you got?
Full house.
You got me.
- Ahhh, that's alright. Y'know, that's a tough hand to beat.
- I thought we had them!

This is the worst possible position to be in.

Party (GNP) reportedly said something to the effect that
President Kim Dae-jung's mouth should be stitched shut with
an industrial sewing machine because he lies all the time.
In the meantime, Han Ho-son, the Kangwon-do provincial
gubernatorial candidate of the United Liberal Democrats
(ULD), the coalition partner of the ruling National Congress
for New Politics (NCNP), reportedly defamed former president
Kim Young-sam in distasteful language, calling him a
good-for-nothing who only ate"kalguksu," or noodles cut
with a kitchen knife, at Chong Wa Dae, the presidential
office, while taking care of his father's fishery business.

[John's Diary]
It was passed the rush hour and they must have increased the
train intervals. It would take much longer than usual to get
to the theater, I thought. Shit! The theater was just a stop
away. What a day! Wasted time and money for nothing! At this
point I began to think that I should have tried running to
the theater. After about 10 minutes, I heard the next train
pulling in. People didn't bother to line up and stormed
towards the train. The PA system cranked out a warning to get
on the train in an orderly fashion, but that didn't prevent
the fat lady behind me from jumping the line and forcing her
way through the crowd.
1. It was passed the rush hour:
지났다고 할 때 It is passed ~를 씁니다.
2. They must have increased the train intervals: Train
She must have missed the train, or she should be here by now.
3. It would take much longer than usual: 여기서 would를 쓴
Will에도 추정의
4. Get to the theater: 도착하다는 arrive를 흔히 쓰지만,
When you get there, please call me.
5. For nothing:
Good for nothing이라는
You're good for nothing.
pull in한다고 합니다.
7. Didn't bother to line up:
Please, don't bother. It's too much of a hassle.
8. Stormed towards the train: Storm
The loan sharks stormed into my office.
9. The PA system cranked out a warning: PA는 public
Crank it up이라는 말도 잘 쓰는 데요.
10. Jumping the line:
Jump the gun이라는 말도
11. Force one's way through: 동사 + one's way + 전치사 형태는
He forced his way through the crowd.
He elbowed his way into the bus.
He felt his way out of the room.
She kept up the relationship with them.
그렇게 관계를 유지하는걸 keep up the relationship (with someone)이라고 합니다.
그냥 keep up with someone만 써도 같은 뜻이예요.
They've kept up with each other even as they broke up.
I try to keep up the relationship with those I met when I
worked as a teaching student.

[John's Diary]
After parking the car, I ran for the nearby subway station. I
didn't have a fare card with me, so I put 400 Won into the
slot of the automatic ticket vending machine and pushed the
button. But, nothing happened. I thought the damn machine was
out of order and had eaten my money, so I gave it a real hard
kick. A station attendant came up and scolded me saying the
fare had been raised to 450 Won long ago. How embarrassing. I
bought a ticket and slid through the turnstile. I found a
train already leaving. Damn, I missed the train by a second.
I didn't have a fare card with me 처럼 with me를 쓴 것은
2. Slot: Slot
3. The damn machine was out of order: Order
4. Gave it a real hard kick: 찬다고 하면 그냥 kick을 쓰지요.
take, have에 붙여 씁니다.
Push를 이런 형태로 바꾼다면 give it a push가 되겠지요. Look할
것도 take a good look하지요.
5. Station attendant came up:
Something came up. I won't be able to meet at 7.
6. Long ago: Long time ago
7. Slid: slide
8. Turnstile:
9. Missed the train by a second: 무슨무슨 차이로 할 때 by를
간발의 차이로는 by a hair('s breadth) 또는 by a
whisker를 쓰지요.
I missed the train by a hair.
I got on the plain by a hair.

Jay : (나이츠들에게) Men, we're up ten to nothing.
* up = winning by
IT'S MOMENTS LIKE THESE THAT BUILD CHARACTER.
What do we do when we're clearly superior to the enemy?
Jay Jr.: Go for the throat?
* go for : ~을 하러 움직이다
Jay : Exactly. We show no mercy. We do not let up. We go for
the kill.
* let up : 공격을 늦추다
Anna : Now, let's take into consideration that this is a learn
-ing experience.
Let's all get back out there and concentrate and let's
try and have a good time.
Jeffrey: Hey. WE MAY NOT BE THE SHARPEST TOOLS IN THE SHED,...
... but we know the difference between a good time and a
bad time.

Narrator : And so, it was Christmas Eve.
And TIME HAD RUN OUT FOR THE PIG.
Mrs.Hoggett: Are you doing him tonight, then?
Good. The blood will drain by morning.
Hoggett : Pity.
Mrs.Hoggett: What's that?
Hoggett : Nothing.
Mrs.Hoggett: What on earth are you babbling on about?
Hoggett : SHAME TO MISS OUT ON THE BEST HAM PRIZE of next
years fair is all.

He's good for nothing.

good-for-nothing 쓸모 없는; worthless;

his own parents' 25th anniversary party?
You know that guy's good for nothing.
You said it!
I heard that he couldn't make it to his father's retirement party.
You're kidding. I can't believe it.
