→ 읽고 싶은 것을 읽을 수 있는 자유뿐만 아니라 출판의 자유도…: freedom to press as well as to read what you wish~
→ 언론의 자유는 freedom of speech이지만 출판의 자유는 freedom of the press이다.
→ 공동의 이익이 되다: help the common good[be of benefit to everyone]
→ 원하는 직업에 종사하다: work at any job you like
→ 정부에게 재고를 요청하다: ask the government to think it over again~[to reconsider it]
→ 공정한 재판을 받을 권리: the right to be given a fair trial
ANS) You have freedom to press as well as to read what you wish. It is freedom of the press that gives you freedom to criticize the government when you feel it will help the common good. You have freedom to own property, to go into business, to work at any job you like. You have the right to ask the government to think it over again if you feel you have treated unjustly. You have the right to be given a fair trial by a court of law if you are accused of a crime. No one can say you are guilty unless you have been proved guilty.

→ 「버스를 타고 출근하다」는 go to work by bus「저녁 늦게 까지」는 till late in the evening ( till late at night이 아님을 유의.)
→ 「퇴근하다」- leave one's office, come back from one's office, come (back)home from work
→ 「~한 후 바로」- as soon as, no sooner ~than, the moment, instantly
→ 「이따금」- occasionally, now and then, at times, once in a while
→ 「연휴」- consecutive holidays
(ANS 1) Occasional consecutive holidays are the most pleasant thing to those who go to work in a crowded bus in the morning. Work till late in the evening, leave their office, and go to bed immediately after supper.
(ANS 2) Perhaps nothing is more pleasant than occasional consecutive holidays for those who go through the routine of going to work in a crowded bus in the morning. Continuing to work till late in the evening, coming back home and immediately after supper, going to bed.

→ (A) (too) (long) holiday
She was reluctant to go to college.
(ANS) Too long a holiday makes one reluctant to start work again.

[比較] till, until
A son's a son till he takes a wife처럼 할 수도 있다.
Until he went to college, he never had thought of his speech./ He had never thought of his speech till(or until) he went to college.
Wait till the rain has stopped라고도 할 수 있다. He waited till the rain stopped 또는 He waited till the rain had stopped라고 할 수 있다. till(또는 until)은 He did not learn of it till the next day(다음 날에 가서야 그 일을 알았다)에서처럼 부정적 구문에 쓰이기도 한다. 이 구문에서 계속되는 것은 부정의 상태 즉, he did not learn이다. It was not long till we realized(오래지 않아 우리는 깨달았다) 같은 글은 이렇게 설명할 수 없다. 여기서 주절 it was not long은 계속하는 것으로 생각되는 문장을 만들지 못한다. She can't go till she finishes her work와 Until injustice is ended, peace will never be realized 같은 글에서는 till, until의 용법은 표준적이지만 다음과 같은 구문에서 till, until의 사용은 가끔 나타나는 수는 있어도 격식 차리는 글에서는 before, when을 쓰는 것이 좋다.
It was not long before he noticed the change.(이윽고 그 변화가 그의 눈에 띄었다.)/ She had scarcely arrived when it began to storm.

(X) Let's go and play in Chongno after work.
(O) Let's go to Chongno after work.

It rained for three days in a row와
He didn't go for work for five days in a row
in a row와 이 밖에도 많이 쓰이는 표현은
back to back, straight, running, on end등 많다.

At the moment it's a bit hard because I'm not used to living away from home.
I have to do everything for myself, like cooking, washing and ironing.
Mom used to do all that!
Studying here is very different from high school in my home town.
We have to choose which lectures to go to and when to do it, but here you have more freedom.
I'm not used to that so I often leave my essays to the last minute.
Then I have to work right through the night, which is something I've never done before.

Imagine you were asked to work overtime and you didn't want to do it.
Then you were told you would get paid twice as much money.
You would probably become more cooperative.
This idea also works with children.
A few years ago, a child of mine wouldn't brush her teeth before going to bed.
Nothing we did could make her change her mind.
Then, my parenting class teacher recommended that I should give her rewards.
So I used this simple phrase, which worked wonders:
“If you go and brush your teeth now, we will have time to read three stories instead of just one.”
Whenever she heard it, she would jump up and brush her teeth right away.

Question : What do you do to keep yourself physically fit?
Tom : When I was in college I used to play sports like baseball and basketball.
But I can't do that now, so I try to play golf every weekend.
I work mostly sitting at my desk in my office, so I like to get outside and get some fresh air.
Sue :When the weather is OK, I go jogging in the early morning almost every day.
It's fun and it makes me feel fresh all day.
In the winter I don't feel safe running in the dark, so I usually jump rope and lift weights before breakfast.
Liz :I have no weight problem, but I'm not as strong as I used to be.
I'm worried about my health, to tell the truth.
Last summer I quit smoking and next month I'm going to buy an exercise machine.
I'm looking forward to that.

Several years ago we bought a huge house, more than 200 years old.
In the house there was a room with a very old piano in it.
It was out of tune.
Most of the keys didn't even work.
One night, I was in the house alone.
Suddenly I heard piano music.
It was in perfect tune, coming from the piano room.
To get to the room, I had to go through several unlit rooms and hallways.
I couldn't bring myself to do it.
After a few minutes, the music stopped.
Then my dad came home.
We went to the room.
I tried to play the piano―it was totally out of tune as it had always been.

Success is the act of trying to improve upon the things you're already doing.
It's growing and developing.
It's accepting bigger and greater challenges.
It's not being afraid of making a mistake, suffering a setback, or failing.
It's trying to do your very best.
And if, in the end, your very best wasn't quite good enough, you just have to go back to work and prepare a bit harder for the next time.
Nobody succeeds 100 percent in anything they do.
When you're able to recognize and accept this fact of life, you realize that failure and losing are as much a part of the game of life as are success and winning.

Dear Sally,
I'm so excited to hear that you're finally going to visit me here in Seoul.
I've really missed you since I moved away from Australia and I've been waiting for you to come for so long.
I've made an arrangement to take off a couple of weeks from work, so I'll be able to spend a lot of time with you.
Please let me know what you want to do here and I'll prepare everything for it.
You should check out the highlights of Korea online.
If you want to go somewhere outside of Seoul, just let me know and I'll be happy to rent a car.
I hope that I'll be able to do many things with you.
I can't wait to see you.
Bye for now,
Suzanne
Sally
Suzanne

The only long-term solution is to make life in the rural areas more attractive, which would encourage people to stay there.
This could be achieved by providing incentives for people to go and work in the villages.
Facilities in the rural areas, such as transport, health, and education services, should be improved to foster a more positive attitude to rural life.
The improvement of rural lives is doubly important, because the cities themselves cannot be developed without the prior development of the rural areas.

Dear Lord, how do you explain today's crazy economic system to a child?
How do I tell him that Daddy doesn't make enough money to support our family so I have to go to work to help pay the bills?
And Lord, keep me from resenting those who add to my guilt.
By presuming I work because I want to get out of the house.

Servants may leave so that we have to wash up after our meals, but we may still, when the work is done, be able to put our feet up for a few minutes.

We may, when we go out in the car, find the roads up, or so bad that our tires go flat and have to be pumped up.
Yet, when we get home, we may perhaps enjoy, if we sit up late, a wonderful broadcast of opera from Milan or Rome.
Things do look up sometimes.

By unusual dances they communicate to others in the hive that they have found

George Willard, the Ohio village boy, was fast growing into manhood, and new
thoughts had been coming into his mind. All that day, amid the jam of people at the
Fair, he had gone about feeling lonely. He was about to leave Winesburg to go away
to some city where he hoped to get work on a city newspaper and he felt grown up.
The mood that thad taken possession of him was a thing known to men and unknown
to boys.

It is evident that no professional writer can afford only to write when he
feels like it. If he waits till he is in the mood, till he has the
inspiration as he says, he waits indefinitely and ends by producing
little or nothing. The professional writer creates the mood.
He has his inspiration too, but he controls and subdues it to his bidding
by setting himself regular hours of work. But in time writing becomes
a habit, and like the old actor in retirement, who gets restless when
the hour arrives at which he has been accustomed to go down to the theater
and make up for the evening performance, the writer itches to get to his
pens and paper at the hours at which he has been used to write.

"Because we live in the modern age," says a comedian, "women now have
many choices: They can have a job or not have a job. They can be married
or unmarried, married with children, married with children and a job,
unmarried with children and a job, unmarried with children and no job,
unmarried with children who themselves have jobs, have a job and an
au pair who has children…."
"Men, unfortunately, have the same choice we've always had: we can
work or we can go to jail."

Concerned because he thought he was paying too little attention to his
two small daughters, a friend of mine decided to put aside his work
one day and take part in their games.
Just when he was beginning to feel a certain satisfaction at having
fulfilled his duty, the youngest asked, "Daddy, can we go and play now?"

"We have had a committee specially designated for this project hard at

Mike Brandt finally got back to me today with the final decision.
We're going to go with an outsider - John Racine of Black Securities.
We offer our warmest congratulations."

Sir, what time are you going home?
Seven o'clock.
Do you always go home at that time?
No, sometimes I work extra hours when there's a lot of work to do.

My memory is going, but I don't miss it that much. The nice thing is that
I remember mostly good things, and I tend to forget bad ones. For
example, I remember my childhood quite well, because it was really very
happy. I can't remember how old I am, but I seem to remember my birthdays
without any problem. This is strange, because I sometimes forget those of
other people -- especially if I have to dress up or give expensive
presents. I often forget to get up and go to work in the morning.
Fortunately, I seem to remember that I'm retired.

The awards and prizes total about $750,000 a year, but most of them
range in size from $5,000 to $12,500, a welcome sum to many young
practitioners whose work may not bring in that much money in a year. One
of the advantages of the awards is that many go to the struggling
artists, rather than to those who are already successful. Members of the
Academy and Institute are not eligible for any cash prizes. Another
advantage is that, unlike the National Endowment for the Arts or similar
institutions throughout the world, there is no government money
involved.

because I know all it takes is one drink to go back to zero.

He propositioned you?
Called me into his office,
said couldn't afford to start taking anyone new on,
even part-time.
Put his hand on my knee,
said he might be able to make an exception.
So he starts sliding his hand up my thigh.
So I stood up and I tell him I should get back to work.
He says, "Stay."
He unbuckled his belt.
Did you?
No, I walked out of the office and got back to my tables.
Next day, I came into work, told me to go home.
I was fired.

I think you don't want to go hat in hand
to somebody who used to work for you.
I will not be lectured to the moment you walk in the door!

And that is the last time I go on a date
with a guy who wears a flag pin to work.
I'm one of those guys who wears a flag pin to work.
This isn't really a date, is it?
I really shouldn't be here.
That's what makes it fun.

She'll deny everything,
like she did last night.
She can't deny getting into Stamper's car. You saw her.
Maybe you send a version of the story about her dad.
No one would print it.
Rachel doesn't know that.
She said, "Go to town, bitch."
It won't work. I have to get in her face.

- What is this?
- The names of every person in America
who will lose home care when the freeze sets in.
Who will lose half their welfare benefits.
Who will go on furlough.
Who will lose their student loans, transportation services,
post-combat counseling. Shall I go on?
This is about the big picture, Jacqueline.
This picture looks pretty big to me.
I can't vote for the package.
Then don't.
Just get four of your people to do it.
And then, work with me after we avoid the freeze.

Death threats. When I exposed a drug ring in DC.
No, I read the articles. That's small-time.
I almost had to go into protection.
