* 식사에 대하여
Do you ever eat Korean (Chinese).
Do you go to noodle restaurants?
Do you ever have Jingiskan or Bossam?
Bulgogi is the most popular food with Korean people all through the seasons.
(*) all through: --동안 내내, 처음부터 끝까지, all through the night: 철야로

1) 그 전도유망한 학자: the promising scholar; the scholar of great promise
2) 연구하던 도중에: before he could complete his studies
3) 불운한 일: a misfortune; unfortunate
I am extremely sorry that you could not go with us.

Oh! What a pity it was that he had to go through such a bitter experience.
How very unfortunate you were to be late for the train.
ANS 1) It was really a misfortune to the promising scholar that he fell ill before he could complete his studies.
ANS 2) How unfortunate that hopeful scholar was to fall ill before completing his studies!

→ 지구를 선회비행하다: orbit around the earth
What is still more wonderful,…
→ 100년전으로 돌아가다: go back a century
(ANS) In imagination through books, we are with Charles Linberg in his nonstop flight from New York to Paris, or with modern spacemen on their ship orbiting around the earth. Without a ticket, we may go on a journey to any part o the world we choose. What is still more wonderful, we may go back a century, or many centuries.

Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:
No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there.
And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it.
And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life.

Her little feet she had drawn close up to her,
but she grew colder and colder, and to go home
she did not venture, for she had not sold any
matches and could not bring a farthing of money:
from her father she would certainly get blows,
and at home it was cold too, for above her
she had only the roof, through which the wind
whistled, even though the largest cracks
were stopped up with straw and rags.

Several years ago we bought a huge house, more than 200 years old.
In the house there was a room with a very old piano in it.
It was out of tune.
Most of the keys didn't even work.
One night, I was in the house alone.
Suddenly I heard piano music.
It was in perfect tune, coming from the piano room.
To get to the room, I had to go through several unlit rooms and hallways.
I couldn't bring myself to do it.
After a few minutes, the music stopped.
Then my dad came home.
We went to the room.
I tried to play the piano―it was totally out of tune as it had always been.

When my mother passed away, I had to go through her personal belongings.
In her desk was a bundle of notes tied with a faded ribbon.
On top was a message, which read, “In the event of my death, please destroy these.”
I turned over the packet and glanced at the handwriting on the bottom.
To my surprise I recognized my childish writing,
“P.S.: Please don't let anyone else see this. Love, Eddie.”

Supermarket managers have all kinds of tricks to encourage people to spend more money.
Their aim is to make customers go more slowly through the supermarket.
They place colorful displays in surprising places to catch the customers' attention.
They also make the corridors near the cash registers more narrow.
Then customers with large shopping carts will get stuck or have to slow down.
In some supermarkets, the floor is even slightly uphill for people going towards the exits.
Managers hope that when customers slow down, they will buy a few extra items.

"We say that the universe is expanding."
"What makes it do that?"
"Most astronomers agree that the expanding universe can only have one explanation: Once upon a time, about 15 billion years ago, all substance in the universe was assembled in a relatively small area.
The substance was so dense that gravity made it terrifically hot.
Finally it got so hot and so tightly packed that it exploded.
We call this explosion the Big Bang."
"Just the thought of it makes me shudder."
"The Big Bang caused all the substance in the universe to be expelled in all directions, and as it gradually cooled, it formed stars and galaxies and moons and planets..."
"But I thought you said the universe was still expanding?"
"Yes I did, and it's expanding precisely because of this explosion billions of years ago.
The universe has no timeless geography.
The universe is a happening.
The universe is an explosion.
Galaxies continue to fly through the universe away from each other at colossal speeds."
"Will they go on doing that for ever?"
"That's one possibility.
But there is another.
You may recall that Alberto told Sophie about the two forces that cause the planets to remain in constant orbit round the sun?"
"Weren't they gravity and inertia?
"Right, and the same thing applies to the galaxies.
Because even though the universe continues to expand, the force of gravity is working the other way.
And one day, in a couple of billion years, gravity will perhaps cause the heavenly bodies to be packed together again as the force of the huge explosion begins to weaken.
Then we would get a reverse explosion, a so-called implosion.
But the distances are so great that it will happen like a movie that is run in slow motion.
You might compare it with what happens when you release the air from a balloon."
"Will all the galaxies be drawn together in a tight nucleus again?"
"Yes, you've got it.
But what will happen then?"
"There would be another Big Bang and the universe would start expanding again.
Because the same natural laws are in operation.
And so new stars and galaxies will form."

There is no finer cure for backache, liver, stomach or intestinal problems than a mudbath, according to Professor Oren Mathenson of Newcastle University.
He says there is no need to go to a health club or spa.
You simply buy the right mud and fill the bath at home.
A warm mudbath relaxes the muscles and opens the skin pores to herbs millions of years old.
Mathenson states that the mud found in northern England has more than 300 different plants in a highly concentrated form and that their goodness is absorbed through the skin.
The only problem is getting the mud to go down the plughole after the bath.
Many of the mud packs which can be ordered from various health spas, however, come with instructions.

Everything depended on my final arrow. Still, my rival looked calm. For a
moment, I dreamed I would go home with a gold medal. I approached the
shooting line, remembering all the hard training I had gone through.
Suddenly, I felt my heart beating faster. But I slowly aimed at the
target. Shortly after my arrow began to fly, I heard the crowd cheering.
When I looked at the target, I could not believe my eyes. My arrow hit
the very center of the yellow circle. Then I heard my teammates shouting,
"You did it!"

Time in a Bottle
--- sung by Jim Croce
If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save everyday Till eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you
-
If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I'd save everyday like a treasure and then
Again I would spend them with you
-
**
But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one
I want to go through time with
-
If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that'd never come true
The box would be empty
Except for the memory of
How they were answered by you

Nothing gonna change
my love for you
Glenn Medeirosard
If I had to live my life without you near me
The days would all be empty
The nights would seen so long
And you I see forever oh so clearly

But it never felt this strong
Our dreams are young and we both know
They'll take us where we want to go

Nothing's gonna change my love for you

How much I love you
You'll only change my whole life through
But NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE MY LOVE FOR YOU
-
If the road ahead is not so easy
Our love will lead away for us
Like a guiding star
I'll be there for you if you should need me

Playing with those memories again
And just when I thought time had set me free
Those thoughts of you keep taunting me
Holding you
A feeling I never outgrew
Though each and every part of me has tried
Only you can fill that space inside
My heart it's not mending
** Just when I thought I was over you
And just when I thought I could stand on my own
Oh baby those memories come crashing through
And I just can't go on without you
On my own I've tried to make the best of it alone
I've done everything I can to ease the pain
But only you can stop the rain
I just can't live without you
I miss everything about you
** Repeat
And I just can't go on without
Go on without, go on without
It's just no good without you
Without you ...

[ Legalization of Euthanasia ]
The Netherlands on Wednesday became the world's first country to legalize the controversial euthanasia, which was immediately met with both warm praise and outrage from around the world.
It was the final legislative act in a 30-year public discussion over euthanasia in that country, although mercy killings and assisted suicides have been discreetly practiced and tolerated for years.
The law that passed through the Dutch upper house is expected to go into effect in autumn.
Doctors conducted an estimated 5,000 mercy killings a year in the Netherlands even before the legislation, and surveys show that doctors refuse far more requests to assist suicides than they accept.

Korea has been lauded as a successful model in coping with the financial crisis, but to people in countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan, it has exported the image of a "horrible country."
A Japanese writer said, "Koreans who had suffered have now become a people who oppress others."
Her book continues, "Korea is a country where foreigners find it difficult to live.
There are no residence rights and it is the only country in the world where a Chinatown failed.
Koreans are well aware of issues concerning green cards in the US and fingerprinting in Japan,
but completely ignorant about what foreigners go through in Korea."

For perspective on this issue, meet Phil Greer, one of the name partners
in the San Francisco-New York venture firm of Weiss, Peck & Greer.
(Phil
Greer)
A generation ago, in the early 1970s, Greer was one of the early
investors in a struggling young company called Federal Express, then run
by a 20-something entrepreneur, Frederick W. Smith, who had the brash
idea of delivering mail and packages overnight.
Smith had already burned through two substantial rounds of funding in
building his fleet of airplanes. Though the business indicators looked
good, Federal Express's coffers were empty. And it was a day when people
clung to the quaint idea that a company had to show a profit to go
public.
Smith embarked on what became a desperation mission. He gave up half his
company for $4 million, a sum that seems trivial today. Greer, who had
invested in both earlier rounds, stayed with Federal Express for what
became a very lucrative investment for the VC firm. ``I was traveling to
the board meetings fairly often, and I could see things turning
around,'' he says now.
Here's the kicker: Greer still holds some of the original stock from
that round, known as a ``down round'' in VC parlance. ``I hold stock a
long time,'' he explained the other day at a Weiss, Peck & Greer
partners meeting at the Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley.

My credit card company tells me there is a way to double my airline
miles buying online, but it's not entirely clear how. And my kid's
school tells me if I go to the right site to buy, it'll get a cut -- and
you wouldn't scrimp on your daughter's education, would you? And any
number of do-gooder sites say if I buy through them I'll be solving
world hunger and air pollution, and helping with a cure for Donald
Trump's fear of handshaking.

hrough my fingers'라는 표현이 있다.
A:Jim, Jim!
B:Why do you call Jim? He slipped on his jacket and went out with hi
s friends.
A:Oh boy, he slipped through my fingers. He promised to help me plan
t some corn in the field. He's a boy in his actions.
B:Maybe, the promise slipped his memory.
A:By the way, where did he go?
B:I think he went out to the stream to catch fish.
A:As slippery as an eel!
B:Honey, boys will be boys.
A:짐,짐!
A:맙소사.
<어구풀이>slip on the jacket=재킷을 잽싸게 입다.
Oh boy=
plant=심다.
corn=옥수수.
stream=시냇물.
slippery=미끄러운.
eel=뱀장어.
Boys will be boys=
