get worse until nothing can be done to save a situation or make it
better again
(ex) Our marriage was going down the tubes, and there was nothing I
could do about it.
(6) aggravate : to make a bad or difficult situation even worse
(ex) This existing situation was aggravated by the Gulf war.

At the end of every chapter in our science text, there is a group of optional questions, intended for students who wish to go more deeply into the subject.

If you go to the interview well-prepared and in the right frame of mind, there will be no need for you to feel discomfited by even the most probing questions.

Is there anything more unpleasant than to go to a store and find yourself in the hands of a surly salesperson?

It is a sobering thought that when one has reached the pinnacle of a mountain, there is nowhere to go but down.

It's a good idea to bring a small gift when you go to a dinner party.
Flowers are always nice, or you might bring a bottle of wine if you know that the family drinks it.
You should arrive on time or five to ten minutes late.
Don't get there early.
If you're going to be more than fifteen minutes late, you should call and tell them.
Try to relax at the dinner table.
If you are confused about choosing the correct fork, knife, or spoon, just watch the other guests, and follow them.

Mr. Kim and a flight attendant spent about fifteen minutes filling everything out together.
Mr. Kim finally handed in the forms.
After half an hour wait, the supervisor called him over and said,
“Unclaimed luggage usually comes in on the conveyor belt on your right,
but since it was broken today, all luggage is coming in downstairs at gate 5.
You can go down now; your bags are there.”
Mr. Kim thanked the supervisor, went downstairs, and finally got his luggage.

Two thirds of all missions to Mars have failed.
One reason there have been so many failures is that there have been so many attempts.
We have been trying to go to Mars for 40 years.
Another reason is that getting to Mars is hard.
To get there, spirit and Opportunity, the two Mars Exploration Rovers had to fly through
about 483 million kilometers of deep space and target a very precise spot to land.
The space environment isn't friendly.
If getting to Mars is hard, landing there is even harder.

Volcanoes are very powerful in our minds because we are attracted by fire.
Volcanoes are making a show each time we go there.
It is a wonderful show of nature, the best we can imagine.
When we are on volcanoes and they are erupting, we are just nothing.
We have this big mountain exploding, all these powerful things going on; we are just small, small creatures, and this is fantastic.
Normal mountains are really dead compared to volcanoes.
We can't help falling in love with these living mountains.

Several years ago we bought a huge house, more than 200 years old.
In the house there was a room with a very old piano in it.
It was out of tune.
Most of the keys didn't even work.
One night, I was in the house alone.
Suddenly I heard piano music.
It was in perfect tune, coming from the piano room.
To get to the room, I had to go through several unlit rooms and hallways.
I couldn't bring myself to do it.
After a few minutes, the music stopped.
Then my dad came home.
We went to the room.
I tried to play the piano―it was totally out of tune as it had always been.

Suddenly compact discs with titles such as “The Mozart Effect” and “Baroque for Baby” began appearing in stores.
Many parents seemed to believe that if their babies heard Mozart's music, their IQs might increase.
It was called “The Mozart Effect.” But there is no evidence that playing Mozart to babies will raise their IQs.
The original study in 1993 showed only that spatial-temporal abilities of college students who participated in the experiment temporarily increased.
And no one else has been able to show the same result.
Even the researchers who performed the study never claimed it would increase a baby's IQ.
If you want to buy “The Mozart Effect” CDs, just go ahead.
But it is foolish to expect “The Mozart Effect” to be real.
갑자기 “The Mozart Effect”나 “Baroque for Baby” 라는 이름의 음반들이 상점에 등장하고 있다.

In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks.
So residents will tell you directions and distances.
People will say, “Go straight north for two miles and turn right.”

A stream in one of our state parks has always been my sitting spot.
I am fascinated when I see the water bubbling over and down the rocks.
The water has shaped the rocks, causing deep indentations in certain places, but other parts are perfectly flat.
The sound of the water running under the bridge always grabs my attention.
On the other side of the bridge is a pond full of fish.
Nearby there is a place where people can go swimming or just sit on the bank and relax in the sand.

Go to any vacant lot and look around.
Under the “no dumping” signs you will find old tires, rusting sinks, junked refrigerators, and other trash.
There are also laws about the care of dogs, but some dog-owners seem to be ignorant of them.
They let their dogs run loose and do not clean up after them.
Perhaps the most disregarded of all laws are our traffic regulations.
More and more drivers are speeding, going through red lights, and double parking on the road.
And some drivers, apparently not even worrying about being fined,
have been parking in spaces clearly marked as reserved for the physically challenged.
These are some examples that show a lack of respect for the law.

Some researchers believe that many instances in which body and personality go together are due to stereotyping;
that is, we expect a certain type of person to have certain traits, so we see those traits whether they are there or not.
For example, muscular people are believed to be dominant and forceful, so we treat them as leaders.
But sometimes they are actually shy and timid.
Fat people are supposed to be happy and warmhearted, but in reality they can just as easily be depressed or mean.

When I started snow-boarding and then decided to turn professional, it wasn't really a career option.
There was little money in it, you know.
Even though I was ranked number one, I wasn't making a living at it.
So I just figured I would probably do something else.
Since I was always focused on computers,
I thought at some point that if I had to, I probably would go into web design or something.
That's probably what I would have done, if I had not beaten my first competitors.

If you think clowning is just putting up makeup and acting like an idiot, you are wrong.
Anybody can be an idiot, but it takes many hours of practice to make your idiocy funny.
Aha! There's the trick.
I have had thirteen years of being a funny idiot, so it came to me naturally.
But making jokes is really hard.
I have to write down ideas when they pop into my head, or else I don't remember them.
Another trick of being a clown is not to scare kids.
It is tough.
Now whenever I go to see kids, I take off the dark stuff and just wear my bright undershirt,
making kids relaxed and willing to enjoy my show.

It was a Friday afternoon, and the last bell had just rung, which meant it was time to go home for the weekend.
Everyone was excited and hurried out of school shouting goodbye and making weekend plans.
Everyone except Sharon.
Sharon envied the other boys and girls because she wished she could be just like them.
The school was almost empty of students by the time she was ready to leave.
She wasn't in any hurry to go home because she knew what to expect when she got there.
She slowly picked up her stuff and trudged home.
Sharon

I will say that banning the junk food and vending machines in schools is ridiculous.
Above all, junk food is not bad in itself.
In moderation junk food can be part of a healthy diet.
Students should be trusted to make decisions about their diet.
Schools should provide information about healthy eating, but leave the decisions up to the students.
Besides, the “obesity crisis” isn't the schools' fault, and there isn't much they can do to fix it, either.
Fat kids are the result of modern lifestyles that lack physical activities―the Internet, video games, 400+ channels on the TV, etc.
If parents are worried about having fat kids, they should motivate their kids to go out and exercise.

If you haven't done so already, I, as one of your friends, would like to give you some food for thought:
First, being single isn't so bad.
You can be married and still be plenty lonely, especially when your partner is not there for you.
I hope you will not let the fear of singlehood drive you to make the biggest mistake of your life.
Second, love can be killed.
It can be chipped away, piece by piece, until there is nothing left.
This process can go unnoticed until everything falls apart.
The easiest way to destroy love is to keep taking it and give nothing in return.

"The minute you climb in, you start feeling excited.
There's nothing so exciting for me, not even a jet plane.
You get in and start up and off you go.
And then you've got to pay attention every minute.
There's always someone doing something crazy who's likely to end up under your wheels.
I sometimes think it's a miracle if I can get all the way there with no accidents.
You've always got to be thinking ahead.
There's a lot of people in this job who have stomach problems from the tension.
They lose their hearing too, because of the noise.
You've got to be tough on this job, you know."

We all agree that the aim of education is to fit the child for life; however, there are as many opinions as to how that fitting is to be done as there are men to hold them.
For example, fully half of our teachers cannot see that imagination is the root of all civilization.
Like love, imagination may very fairly be said to 'make the world go round,' but, as it works out of sight, it is given very little credit for what it performs.

I want to thank the smokers of the world for their consideration.
Since smoking has been banned in many public areas there has been a remarkable change in attitude.
Rather than anger at being pushed outside on cold, rainy days, I have witnessed polite cooperation.
Even in areas where smoking is not specifically prohibited I have seen smokers excuse themselves from groups to go outside.
Most important, I have seen smokers excuse themselves when small children are present.
As a former smoker, I think these considerate folks deserve special thanks for their remarkable change in behavior.

The only long-term solution is to make life in the rural areas more attractive, which would encourage people to stay there.
This could be achieved by providing incentives for people to go and work in the villages.
Facilities in the rural areas, such as transport, health, and education services, should be improved to foster a more positive attitude to rural life.
The improvement of rural lives is doubly important, because the cities themselves cannot be developed without the prior development of the rural areas.

She had just begun an intense, love-at-first-sight relationship, only to have her lover go off to Europe three weeks later.
For seven tortured weeks she was plagued with doubts.
What if he decided he didn't love her after all?
What if he met someone else during his trip?
What if he didn't call her as soon as he returned?
Full of all these what-ifs, my friend's brain was about to short-circuit, until a wise friend of hers put things in perspective.
"Why worry? Whatever he does, he does.
Remember: You don't know until you know."
My friend stood there, awestruck by the brilliant simplicity of this observation.
There was really nothing she could do about the situation, after all.
And worrying about something before it actually happened suddenly came into focus as the waste of time and energy that it is.
In an instant, it seemed, she was free of the problem, able to settle back and take each day at a time until her lover returned, at which point things progressed just as beautifully as she could have hoped and her fears turned out to be groundless after all.

"We say that the universe is expanding."
"What makes it do that?"
"Most astronomers agree that the expanding universe can only have one explanation: Once upon a time, about 15 billion years ago, all substance in the universe was assembled in a relatively small area.
The substance was so dense that gravity made it terrifically hot.
Finally it got so hot and so tightly packed that it exploded.
We call this explosion the Big Bang."
"Just the thought of it makes me shudder."
"The Big Bang caused all the substance in the universe to be expelled in all directions, and as it gradually cooled, it formed stars and galaxies and moons and planets..."
"But I thought you said the universe was still expanding?"
"Yes I did, and it's expanding precisely because of this explosion billions of years ago.
The universe has no timeless geography.
The universe is a happening.
The universe is an explosion.
Galaxies continue to fly through the universe away from each other at colossal speeds."
"Will they go on doing that for ever?"
"That's one possibility.
But there is another.
You may recall that Alberto told Sophie about the two forces that cause the planets to remain in constant orbit round the sun?"
"Weren't they gravity and inertia?
"Right, and the same thing applies to the galaxies.
Because even though the universe continues to expand, the force of gravity is working the other way.
And one day, in a couple of billion years, gravity will perhaps cause the heavenly bodies to be packed together again as the force of the huge explosion begins to weaken.
Then we would get a reverse explosion, a so-called implosion.
But the distances are so great that it will happen like a movie that is run in slow motion.
You might compare it with what happens when you release the air from a balloon."
"Will all the galaxies be drawn together in a tight nucleus again?"
"Yes, you've got it.
But what will happen then?"
"There would be another Big Bang and the universe would start expanding again.
Because the same natural laws are in operation.
And so new stars and galaxies will form."

Populations are going up, too, and if the world becomes overcrowded, there may be more wars.
Then, when the atomic bombs drop, everything will go up in smoke and dust, and it will be all up with civilization.

Between historical events and the historian there is a constant interplay.
The historian tries to impose on these events some kind of rational pattern: how they happened and even why they happened.
No historian starts with a blank mind as a jury is supposed to do.
He does not go to documents with a childlike innocence of mind and wait patiently until they dictate conclusions to him.
Quite the contrary.

I went to public school, and because of my total lack of interest and non-attendance I was asked to leave.
I didn't want to go there in the first place.
I was taken away from all my friends.
My father must have been very pleased to get me into the school, but in the end it was a complete waste of money.
I let him down quite badly, I suppose.
I tried several jobs but I couldn't settle down in them.
They just weren't challenging enough.
Then I realized that what I really wanted to do was live in the country and look after animals, so that's what I now do.
As a family, we're not that close, either emotionally or geographically.
We don't see much of each other these days.
My father and I are totally different, like chalk and cheese.
My interests have always been the country, but his are books, music and above all, opera, which I hate.
If he does come to see me, he's in completely the wrong clothes for the country ― fur coats, nice little leather shoes, not exactly ideal for long walks across the fields.

Each day in our small town the siren at the fire station blows at 6 p.m. One evening
it sounded at 7:15 p.m. Concerned, a group of us townspeople gathered to see which way
the fire trucks would go.
When they didn't leave the station, we asked what was going on,"There isn't any fire,"
we were told. "the firemen are having a meeting and not enough of them showed up."

With regard to theory and practice there are two opinions. Some say that theory is
one thing and practice another, so that they do not necessarily go together. Others are
of the opinion that it is because of the inaccuracy of theory that the two do not agree.

He also began to speak of himself with such third person grandiloquence
as, "MacArthur has decided to go into active command in the field.
There is incipient revolution in the air."

So great is our passion for doing things for ourselves, that we are
becoming increasingly less dependent on specialized labor.
No one can plead ignorance of a subject any longer, for there are
countless do-it-yourself publications.
Armed with the right tools and materials, newly-weds gaily embark
on the task of decorating their own homes.
Men of all ages spend hours of their leisure time installing their own
fireplaces, laying out their own gardens; building garages and making
furniture.
Some really keen enthusiasts go so far as to build their own record
players and radio transmitters. Shops cater to the do-it-yourself
craze not only by running special advisory services for novices,
but by offering consumers bits and pieces which they can assemble
at home.
Such things provide an excellent outlet to pent-up creative energy, but
unfortunately not all of us are born handymen.
