ex) His speech about the importance of helping the poor is baloney. He wouldn't even give his best friend a dime.

jump the gun: 미리 시작하다(to move or act impatiently before the correct or proper time)
ex) The runners were called back because one of them jumped the gun.
- Hurry up, driver! Give it the gun.:
- I am over my cold and going great guns.:
- I'm going to stick to my guns.:
- spike a person's gun:

→ 노예처럼 시달리던 암흑세계: the shadow of slavery 또는 the darkness of slavery
에서 살기 위해서: to come out from~and to live in~
A bad habit cannot be corrected overnight.
It took two years to construct the bridge.
→ 수백만년의 시간: hundreds of years
→ 효과적으로 민주주의를 운영할 수 있는 수단과 방법: ways and means to make democracy work[to run democracy effectively]
→ 수백년이 지나는 동안에: as the centuries went by
ANS) Through centuries men have fought to come out from the shadow of slavery into the sunlight of freedom. Freedom did not come overnight. It has taken hundreds of years and the efforts of millions of people to find ways and means to make democracy work. The desire for a kind of government that would give freedom to all people has always been strong among men. As the centuries went by, men discovered that 'government by the people' is the ideal form of government. Because government by the people means government for the good of all the people.

→ 많은 공통점을 갖다: have a great deal in common
→ 본질에서가 아니라 정도에서: not in essence but in degree
→ 「그러나 시대가 다르고 작가가 다르고 보면 그문제에 대한 해답도 다르다」는 앞 문장에 이어서…, but with different solutions according to different authors who wrote at different times로 풀어서 표현한다.
→ 작가의 과업: the writer's task
→ 인생의 참된 모습을 보여주다: give us a faithful picture of life
ANS) Human beings all have a great deal in common. Even the greats of history differ from us not in essence but in degree. The human problems that repeat themselves in life repeat themselves in literature, but with different solutions according to different authors who wrote at different times. The writer's task is to give us a faithful picture of life.

[比較] earth, globe, world
The earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof.(땅과 거기에 충만한 모든 것은 주의 것이다.)/ this goodly frame, the earth(지구라는 이 훌륭한 조직체)
While we are yet on earth, let us be mindful…
circumnavigate the globe
the politics of the globe/ The whole world hopes for peace.
We give too much thought to the things of this world.(우리에게는 세속적 관심사가 너무나 많다.)
The world is too much with us.

[比較] range, reach, scope, compass, gamut
There was no human being within my range of vision./ He did not fire until they were within range of his rifle.
beyond the reach of my understanding/ Anything like sustained reasoning was beyond his reach.(꾸준히 이치를 따진다는 따위의 일은 무엇이나 그의 힘에는 부친 일이었다.)
The subject does not lie within the scope of this book.
a type of education that gives a child scope for development of all his powers.
notes of an insect that lie above the compass of the human ear/ He did all within the compass of his power.
Only prose can give the full gamut of modern feeling.

[比較] suspect, surmise, suppose, suspicion
They suspected him of cheating at cards, but there was nothing to justify an open accusation./ He suspected that there was sabotage in connection with the fire.
I surmised that you were his son from your striking resemblance to him. suspect는 surmise의 뜻을 나타낼 수도 있지만, 나쁜 뜻을 나타내려고 하지 않는 경우에는, 후자가 모호하지 않으므로 그것을 쓰는 것이 좋다.
Do you suppose that she wished to remain unmarried?/ The roads were no better than the old had supposed./ All right, suppose we do give him the money? What will happen then?
I suspicioned he wasn't a real doctor from the very beginning.

Good morning이나 Good evening같은 인사말 조차 하지 않는다는
뜻이다. know the time of day란 말도 있는데 '하루의 시간을
Do you think I don't even know the
time of day?
Do you think I was
born yesterday?

Should I give you more coffee? (X)
(How about ~?, Would you like ~?, Would you care for ~?)'
① Would you like more coffee?(커피 더 드시겠어요?)
② Would you care for another cup of coffee?(커피 한 잔 더 하실래요?)

----------------------------------------------------------
Is that so ? / Is that right ? / How interesting ! /
Really ? / That's news to me. / I didn't know that./
What ? / No kidding ! / You must be kidding ! /
You don't say. / Come on ! / Give me a break ! /
----------------------------------------------------------
" Is that so ? "/ " Is that right ? "/ " How interesting! "
때에는, " Oh, are you ? " / " Oh, doesn't he ?
예를 들어, " I am worn out.
Oh,are you ? "
He doesn't know the ABC of English."
라는 말에 " Oh,doesn't he ?"
That's news to me. " / " I didn't know that. "
" What ? " / " No kidding. "
미국인이 많이 쓰는 표현 중에 " Give me a break !

Honor Box
예를 들면 give one's word of honor..
be on one's honor는 명예를 걸고 맹세한 상태를 말하죠.

If I have to say one thing, that's I couldn't be as normal as everyone.

I'm ready to give up some of my own privacy, but not my family.

A Lap Pillow Puts You to Sleep
From Japan, the answer to the question, what to give the man who has everything.
A lap to lay his weary head on.
Not a wife or a girlfriend or even a complete body.
Just a pillow in the shape of a woman's lap.
The lap pillow was designed by a Tokyo entrepreneur
who said he based it on a friend not on my wife
because we wanted it to resemble a slim woman.
Well, the lap pillow will come in handy for him
since he'll no doubt be sleeping on the couch from now on.

My favorite paintings are portraits.
I like portraits if the artist really captures the person's character.
Here's a still life.
I've never understood the appeal of still lifes.
They're like portraits of objects.
But an object doesn't have the character like a person.
No, but the artist can give the painting a mood or a feeling.
* still life 정물화, 정물 cf. still 움직이지 않는, 정지해 있는

The jobs that most companies are doing with information today would have been impossible several years ago.
At that time, getting rich information was very expensive,
and the tools for analyzing it weren't even available until the early 1990s.
But now the tools of the digital age give us a way to easily get, share, and act on information in new ways.

Chopsticks are handy eating tools that have been around for a very long time.
The Chinese invented them over 2500 years ago.
Chopsticks are still used widely today, even though many people in Japan and China are using knives and forks
because they want to learn more about Western ways of eating.
While interest in using knives and forks is growing throughout Asia,
more and more Americans are learning to use chopsticks.
They use them mainly when they eat in Asian restaurants.
Waiters in most Japanese, Korean and Chinese restaurants in America will give you chopsticks if you ask for them.

I worked the night shift at a restaurant and every Friday night the same 5 deaf men would come to eat.
They usually came very late and often stayed past the closing time.
One night when they had stayed well past the closing time,
I asked my boss if he could please give them some kind of sign that we would like to close the restaurant so they would 1eave.
