[比較] surprise, astonish, amaze, astound, startle, dumfound, flabbergast
I'm surprised at your concern. 이것은 비교적 새로운 뜻이고, 본래의 옛 뜻은 '놀라도록 불시에 습격하다‘(come upon another suddenly and with starting effect), ’방심하고 있는 틈을 타서 치다’. Her friends planned to surprise her on her birthday with a gift. Their gift greatly surprised and pleased her.
He astonished many people by failing in college work after getting high grades in high school./ I am astonished to see him there.
New scientific discoveries constantly amaze us./ I was amazed at the news.
I was astounded by his proposal.
He was startled by a loud noise.
be dumfounded at the discovery
They were flabbergasted by this involuntary outbreak.

Summer vacations in the mountains or at the beach, or indeed
anywhere outdoors, are to be encouraged because they allow people
ground down by routine life and punishing work schedules to recharge
their batteries and recover from fatigue. Young people in particular,
benefit greatly because getting out and about they experience many new
things and they have the opportunity to enjoy a healthy romanticism in
the bosom of Mother Nature.

Many Americans enjoy saving time.
For this reason, home-shopping is a big business these days, and it's getting bigger.
In most cities, you can watch TV channels that advertise 24 hours a day.
The products they advertise can be ordered by calling a toll-free "800" telephone number and using a credit card.
The products are then sent directly to the customers home.

UNICEF reported that Korean children are most exposed to “death by traffic accidents” among OECD countries.
It announced that Korea ranks first with 25.6 deaths for every 100,000 children.
Many drivers in Korea ignore traffic lights and drive dangerously.
In Korea, 71% of the children die by getting struck by cars while walking.
If we observe traffic regulations and keep safe driving in mind, the nation can save about 12,000 young lives each year.

Scientists believe that elephants become alcoholics for the same reason some people do.
They want to forget their everyday lives and problems, and getting drunk allows them to do that, at least for a short time.
The scientists have found that if elephants are put in stressful situations, they will consume a lot more alcohol than usual.
Sadly, these stressful situations are becoming more and more common in the wild.
As elephants face overcrowding, caused by the destruction of their habitat,
increasing numbers of them are turning to alcohol as the answer.

Teenagers who feel insecure about their own status and popularity often try to reassure themselves by pointing a finger at someone who is obviously out.
An insecure group leader may try to assert power by getting everyone in his/her crowd to mock an outsider.
When dealing with a scapegoat, it’s important not to play both sides of the fence, being compassionate to those who are being isolated while giving support and approval to the bullies who are tormenting them.
Let the bullies know how angry you are about what they are doing.

Most of the middle-school texts are full of sidebars, boxes, and other presumably eye-catching special features bearing such titles as
“Flex Your Brain!”, “EXPLORE!”, “Find Out!”, and “Minds On!”
The claim is often made that with today's generation of television-reared children, books need to offer all sorts of bright, short, attention-getting features.
But several studies show the opposite: Some children try to read through a whole page from top to bottom as if it were a “traditional” text and become confused by the sudden jumps into sidebar material and captions.
Others look at the picture captions but never read the text.
Still others read the text but never read the feature titles.

If character development is a foundation of democratic societies, consider some of the ways emotional intelligence buttresses this foundation.
The bedrock of character is self-discipline; the virtuous life, as philosophers since Aristotle have observed, is based on self-control.
A related keystone of character is being able to motivate and guide oneself, whether in doing homework, finishing a job, or getting up in the morning.
And the ability to defer gratification and to control and channel one's urges to act is a basic emotional skill, one that in a former day was called will.
"We need to be in control of ourselves―our appetites, our passions―to do right by others," notes Thomas Lickona, writing about character education.
"It takes will to keep emotion under the control of reason."

A farmer kept a prize cow in a pasture through which a railroad track ran.
Each day at the same time, a freight train passed by at great speed.
One day after the train had gone, the farmer discovered his cow was missing.
He promptly sued the railroad.
The railroad hired a young lawyer, and just before the case came to trial,
the attorney bargained with the farmer, getting him to settle for half of
what he had demanded. Proud of his achievement, the lawyer boasted as he
handed over the settlement check to the farmer: "You really had me worried.
I didn't have any witnesses. The engineer was asleep, and so was the
brakeman. You could have won the whole amount."
"Well, young fella," the farmer said as he pocketed the check, "you had me
worried, too. You see, that darned cow came home this morning."

Today let me tell you about an experience I had on the bus. The bus was
full and I was standing near the door. As people got on, they stepped on
each other's feet and pushed one another in the back. I realized that the
riders didn't like it, but they understood that's the way it is. In my
country, when getting on a bus, people will apologize if they touch a
person at all. Where I come from, everyone worries about individual space
no matter where they are.
▶ Push another one in the push

Every summer people like to enjoy the sun. Many make a point of getting
to the beach to get a tan. And every summer many return home suffering
from a sunburn. Not too long ago tanning was fashionable and even
promoted by doctors as a healthful activity. But today there is evidence
that regular exposure to the ultraviolet rays of sunlight, especially if
it results in burns, can be harmful to health.

Common sense aside, the most important asset in business is a sense of
humor, an ability to laugh at yourself or the situation. Laughter is
the most powerful and constructive force for calming tension. If you can
point out what is humorous or absurd about a situation and ease the
tension by getting the other party to share your feeling, you will have
the upper hand. There are very few absolutes in business. This is one of
them, and I've never seen it fail.

It goes down the same as the thousand before
No ones getting smarter
No ones learning the score
You're never ending spirit of deaf and violence and hate

Everyone should know by now that drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause serious physical and mental problems in the unborn child.
Most doctors have told their patients, television announcements have dramatized the dangers, and warning signs have gone up in restaurants and bars.
But too many mothers-to-be are not getting the message.
More than 50,000 babies are born in the U.S. each year with alcohol-related defects.
In about one-fourth of these cases, the damage―ranging from facial deformities to heart abnormalities―is severe enough to be classified as fetal alcohol syndrome.

Everyone who visits Russia should first get a visa. If you come by train
you must already have a visa. You will not be allowed to enter at all
without one. Travellers without visas will be sent back where they came
from. Visas are given on the spot if you arrive by plane or by car.
However, you may have to wait a long time for one. This can be avoided
by getting a visabefore you leave.

There are literally thousands of different types of cordyceps fungi
and remarkably, each specializes on just one species
but these attacks do have a positive effect on the jungle's diversity.
Since parasites like these stop any one group of animal getting the upper hand.
The more numerous a species becomes, the more likely it'll be attacked by it's nemesis

With so much competition, jungles have become the home of the specialist.
Now this animal, in the island of Borneo, is one of the most unusual.
It's a colugo, or flying lemur, though this is something of a misnomer
as it doesn't actually fly and it certainly isn't a lemur
in fact nobody's quite sure who it's closest relative is.
The colugo depends on a diet of young leaves
and to find enough of them, it must move from tree to tree.
The leaves are not very nutritious, but then, getting around doesn't use much energy.
In a single night, a colugo might have to travel as far as two miles
but that task is made easier by it's superior gliding skills.
The secret of success in the competitive jungle is specializing

One day, while waiting on the sidelines for my son's soccer practice to finish, I began getting anxious.
"I wish they'd hurry," I mumbled to a neighbor standing nearby.
"We have to get home for dinner."
"Dinner?" she asked.
"You mean a family dinner? You must be kidding. We save that for holidays and special occasions."
Unfortunately, this attitude is becoming increasingly common.
Like many other families, my neighbor, her h
By abandoning this daily routine, they're ignoring its importance.

Oh my gosh! Rachel, honey.. are you okay? Where-where's Paolo?
Rome. Jerk missed his flight.
And then... your face is bloated?
No. Okay. I was at the airport, getting into a cab,
Something about how it was her cab first. And then the next thing I know she just starts- starts pulling me out by my hair!
So I'm blowing my attack whistle thingy and three more cabs show up, and as I'm going to get into a cab she tackles me.
And I hit my head on the kerb and cut my lip on my whistle...
And I hit my head on the kerb and cut my lip on my whistle...

So, how are things in the City of Brotherly Love?
We're getting by.
Good, good.

we are getting on a plane and joining you.

By the way, was that you I saw getting pulled over by a policeman?

I don't know if it's because they're too young and they don't understand,
or if they're just getting some perverse joy out of testing me.

- Hey, Paul. - Hey.
Hope I'm not interrupting.
Actually, I was getting ready to go somewhere.
I just wanted to come by and say hello, you know,
see how you guys a doing.
We're trying to move on. It's been pretty tough.
Yeah, I could only imagine.

Okay, I got to break the ice here.
So you're in counseling. Big deal.
You want humiliation? I'll give you humiliation.
I locked myself out of my house stark naked and got caught by Mike.
Oh, my god. When did this happen?

What can I say? Right place, right time.

I think I can top that. Try getting thrown out of disneyland for lewd behavior.

DEAR ABBY: I would like to add an act of kindness to your
collection. About two years ago, we moved to Alta Laguna
Mobile Home Park in Alta Loma, Calif. We had our newspaper
*subscription transferred. After three or four mornings, I
*commented to my wife that the new *delivery person was doing
an excellent job of getting the paper on the top of our steps
right by the door.
▲ add: to put together with something: 더하다.
▲ subscription: a payment for consecutive issues of a
newspaper: 구독
▲ comment: to make a remark; give an opinion: 말하다.
▲ delivery: the act of handing over: 배달.
Alta Laguna
Mobile Home Park

Global competition is getting fiercer, and we have to constantly venture and take risks in search of a new source of income, but who will take the lead if we strongly hold the CEOs accountable, just by making a hasty decision based on results?

However, not only domestic financial firms but also foreign ones are drawn by the high growth of the Southeast Asian market, and competition is getting fiercer.

In addition, complaints from customers grew, even more, when Mark Raine, vice president of Mercedes-Benz Korea, responded about the criticism, "We will strengthen the 'Indioder' where customers order optional items according to their tastes by getting the results that fit the Korean market the most."

First of all, in the case of a cut in interest rate, the interest rate on loans falls, so more people end up buying houses or stocks by getting a loan.

Kim, who runs a taekwondo studio in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, said, "There were originally 120 Taekwondo students, but we have lost about 30 million won since we were closed for more than a month, so how could it help by getting a low-interest loan from here?"

The reason why many private educational institutes are reopening despite the strong recommendation of temporally closure by the education authorities is that the institution operators are suffering from financial difficulties and students and their parents are concerned about getting left behind their studies.

While B was getting into the car, a car door hit a roadside construction structure which A made an issue about and the dispute between the two led to a grab by each other's collars.

Husband:I'm extremely tired, but I can't fall a asleep.
Wife:Why don't you do some exercise?
Husband:I'm too tired. Honey, you're so determined. You've been riding
the stationary bike for over 30 minutes.
Wife:Does the squeaking sound of the bike bother you?
Husband:Well…?
Wife:I'm gaining weight these days. I'm afraid I'm getting nowhere by
riding a bike.
Husband:Well, I think you're going too far tonight. Please come back.

<어구풀이>
extremely:아주,무척.
exercise:운동.
