People enjoy different activities in each season.
In the summer, many people enjoy swimming and sailing.
In the fall, the nights grow cool and the leaves change colors.
Students get ready to go back to school.
In the winter, many people enjoy sports such as skiing, ice skating, and sledding.
Other people keep themselves warm by staying indoors and reading good books.
When the winter season is over, spring arrives and colorful flowers start to bloom.

Jack Wurm was walking along the shore when he saw a bottle on the sand.
As he bent down to pick it up, Jack saw a note inside.
He couldn't believe what he read.
Jack had found a note worth over six million dollars!
The note in the bottle was a will written by a very rich man.
It said that whoever found the bottle would get half of his fortune.
The bottle had been floating in the ocean for twelve years before Jack found it.
Jack Wurm

Some time ago, a few of my friends and I went I to the beach by bus.
Somehow on that day I felt that I did not want to get wet.
I did not know why, but I had no wish to go swimming.
So I sat down on the straw mat that we had brought and spread out on the sandy beach.
I just wanted to relax and see the waves break on the seashore.

People who are interested in physical fitness need not spend hundreds of dollars on fancy exercise equipment or health club memberships.
Instead, they can get into good shape simply by climbing stairs.
Walking up and down two floors of stairs a day instead of riding an elevator will take off six pounds a year.
Climbing stairs is also good for the heart and can prevent heart attacks.

When he was nine years old, he was brought to the door by a policeman who kept one hand on his arm as if to stop him from running away.
He had been caught writing with a crayon on a wall of the subway station and his parents were expected to discipline him.
The entire rest of the day he stayed in his room waiting for his father to come home from the shirt factory.
A slap in the face, he thought, perhaps that's all he'll get.
And maybe no pocket money for the coming week.

The life of Dorothy and Patrick Tien has improved greatly since they both got new jobs.
Dorothy got a position as an editor at a publishing company.
Patrick was hired as a full-time consultant for a construction firm.
The difference between their new jobs and their old ones can be summed up in one word: flextime.
Until they secured these new positions, Dorothy and Patrick had a very difficult time raising their two small children.
Their life was very stressful because they were at the mercy of a nine-to-five schedule and had to pay a lot for day care.
To get to work on time, they had to have the children at the day care center by 7:30 every morning.

In mystery books and movies, fingerprints play a big role.
The police get them from a gun left by the thief.
Then, soon the thief is in jail.
But in real life, the police rarely get prints from guns.
First of all, a smart thief won't leave his gun where it can be found.
And, even if he did, the gun doesn't leave good prints.
That is because it is usually oily.
Finally, anyone who fires a gun holds it tightly.
That also blurs the prints.
So real-life detectives have to find other kinds of clues.

Millions of law-abiding Americans are physically addicted to caffeine, and most of them don't even know it.
People who drink coffee several times a day for years are likely to be addicted by caffeine.
When deprived of their caffeine, addicts experience often severe symptoms such as a throbbing headache and depression.
As with other addictive drugs, heavy users require higher doses to get the expected effect.

On most subway trains, the doors open automatically at each station.
But when you are on the M1tro, the subway in Paris, things are different.
I watched a man on the Mtro try to get off the train and fail.
When the train came to his station, he got up and stood patiently in front of the door, waiting for it to open.
It never opened.
The train simply started up again and went on to the next station.
In the Mtro, you have to open the doors yourself by pushing a button, depressing a lever or sliding them.

You are invited to the party so that we can express our sincere appreciation to you for the generous support you have extended to us for many years.
For your information, the party will be attended by many top executives of leading Korean and U.S. automakers, and we believe that this will offer many of us an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with each other.

A type of artificial sand might be able to slow down beach from washing off.
Strangely, this new kind of sand is made by grinding glass.
You might think that walking barefoot on ground glass would be painful.
But it's not.
The reason is very simple.
Sand and glass are made of the same kind of material, called silicate.
When glass is ground very finely, you get a sandlike substance that is harder than real sand.
The size of the pieces can be controlled.
Larger pieces wouldn't be as easily affected by the wind and waves.
So a beach covered with artificial sand would last longer than a beach with real sand.

The pollution of sea, air, and land harms our quality of life by affecting our health.
More serious is the possibility of the end of human life itself.
We may become so developed that we kill ourselves!
Therefore, the most recent definition of development emphasizes sustainable development:
the improvement of human quality of life within the limits of a green, healthy earth.
In other words, it is development which aims to protect, not destroy, the earth's resources.
This will make sure that our present lifestyle does not harm future generations' lifestyles.
They will also be able to get fruits from the earth.

When we hear about wetlands such as swamps and bogs, we are often reminded of unpleasant experiences:
we get swamped with homework and bogged down in math problems.
This makes it hard to realize the importance of wetlands.
Wetlands are important to many kinds of animals and plants that live there.
Some birds nest in wetlands and others use them for rest stops during flights.
Wetlands are important to people, too.
People visit wetlands to fish, take pictures and just listen to the sounds and enjoy being outdoors.
Wetlands also help us in other ways.
They control flooding by soaking up water like a sponge and then letting it out later on.

The boomerang, a light, thin, and well-balanced missile, was the very first Australian invention.
It could be thrown into the air to imitate a hawk, causing birds to get frightened and fly into nets where they were caught.
However, boomerangs were mostly used in competitions between native tribes.
The idea was to see who could make the boomerang do the most circles in flight before it returned to the thrower's feet.
Today the boomerang is used by college lecturers to demonstrate the principles of aerodynamics.

Bill : School education should include the skills needed in adult life as well as the study of knowledge and information.
Sports develop such skills by showing students how to keep fit, how to work in a team, and how to practice self-discipline.
Children who haven't been given the chance to take part in physical activities can lose out on social skills when they get older.
On the other hand, if forced to take part in sports in school, they may well discover hidden talents.
Many famous sports people started their careers in this way.
Given this fact, everybody should take a sports class in school.

Ice sometimes can protect crops.
Some growers actually spray their crops with water on a freezing night.
Water freezes quickly on the plants―and then a strange thing happens.
As long as ice stays wet, it cannot get colder than 0℃, a temperature many plants can stand.
If the ice ever became entirely frozen and dry, it might drop many degrees lower, ruining the plants.
But by continually spraying water on the ice, the growers keep it from going below 0℃, saving the plants.
This strange kind of “ice blanket” works only on plants that are strong enough to stand the weight of frozen spray.

All the forms of popular culture have one thing in common―the message that to be fashionable we must buy things.
Every time something goes out of fashion and something new comes in, it is time to get out the credit card and check book.
When we choose clothes, music, and entertainment, we think we are expressing our individuality.
In reality, we are following the fashions which are forced upon us by the small group of people who control the media and manufacturing companies.
So, being fashionable means spending money.

Many people have been thinking of the possibility of sending human beings to Mars.
But we aren't really at that point yet.
Why? The first reason is safety.
Different nations have sent more than thirty probes toward Mars, but only one-third of them have survived the trip.
The second reason is cost.
It costs about a million dollars per kilogram to deliver robots to Mars.
It would take at least fifty billion dollars to get a person to Mars.
The last reason is the cosmic radiation that astronauts would absorb during the mission.
Much of this radiation is blocked on Earth by the Earth’s magnetic field.
Mars has no magnetic field.

How are the holes in Swiss cheese made?
These holes, which are always found in Swiss cheese, are made by special bacteria.
All cheeses are made from milk that has different bacteria added to it.
The bacteria used to make Swiss cheese are not harmful to people.
They are necessary to ripen the cheese.
It is while cheese is ripening that it develops its own special flavor and color.
The bacteria ripening Swiss cheese also eat holes through it.
As the cheese ages, the holes get bigger.

Steve Blass was a great pitcher in 1972.
In fact, he was one of the very best.
One year later, he was on his way out of baseball.
Did he get hurt? No.
Only one thing changed: he lost his confidence.
He said, “When it was gone, it was gone for good.”
He started thinking about all the things that could go wrong, and suddenly they did.
Steve Blass no longer believed he could be a major league pitcher,
and before he knew it, he no longer was a major league pitcher.
The ability to do anything must be accompanied by the belief that we can do it.
If you don’t believe in yourself, you won't be able to perform.
Steve Blass
Steve Blass

Information, depending upon the route through which we absorb it, can be divided into three categories:
Genetic information is carried by the sperm of the father and the ovum of the mother.
It is passed down to us by our collective ancestors through countless years of refinement.
Intellectual information is one that we get through outside sources such as books, education, movies, television, and all manner of external media.
It is an indirect form of information.
Experiential information is one that we personally feel and absorb through direct experience or confrontation with an event.
It is a direct form of information.

You probably can recognize this situation
because it is just one of many examples where men and women quarrel.
This problem is not just Tom and Mary’s but is present in almost every relationship.
Solving this problem for Tom and Mary depends not on how much they loved each other
but on how much they understood the opposite sex.
Without knowing that women really do need to talk about problems to feel better,
Tom would continue to think Mary talked too much and resist listening to her.
Without knowing that Tom was reading the news to feel better, Mary would feel ignored and neglected.
She would persist in trying to get him to talk when he didn’t want to.
These two differences can be resolved by first understanding in greater detail how men and women cope with stress.

Honey has been used since very ancient times because it was the only way early man could get sugar.
It was used by the ancients to make a medical beverage called “mead,” a mixture of honey with wine and other alcoholic drinks.

One major reason we change our clocks to Daylight Saving Time is that it saves energy.
Energy use and the demand for electricity for lighting our homes is directly connected to when we go to bed and when we get up.
Bedtime for most of us is late evening throughout the year.
When we go to bed, we turn off the lights and TV.
In the average home, 25 percent of all the electricity we use is for lighting and small appliances.
By moving the clock ahead one hour, we can cut the amount of electricity we consume each day.

That can be answered at two levels.
An evolutionary biologist would tell you that it is because women get evolutionary bonus points from living long enough to help bring up the grandchildren.
Men, by contrast, wear themselves out competing for the right to procreate in the first place.
That is probably true, but not much help to the medical profession.
However, a group of researchers has just come up with a medically useful answer.
It is that while 70-year-old men have the hearts of 70-year-olds, those of their female peers resemble the hearts of 20-year-olds.

On her second birthday, Jane was given a toy chimpanzee named Jubilee.
Jubilee was named after a baby chimp in the London Zoo and seemed to foretell the course Jane's life would take.
From an early age, Jane was fascinated by animals and animal stories.
By the age of 10, she began to talk about going to Africa to live among the animals there.
As a young woman, Jane attended secretarial school and then worked for a documentary film-maker for a while.
When a friend invited her to visit Kenya, she worked as a waitress to earn the fare to get there by boat.
Finally, at 23, her childhood dream was realized.

Various jobs may require specialized skills such as proficiency in mathematics or business administration.
The single most valuable skill an individual can have, however, is probably the ability to avoid and resolve disagreement and argument.
This is because disharmony is the last thing an organization needs.
No organization succeeds when its members don't get along with one another.
We often see individuals with irritating or cruel personalities may be successful to a certain extent,
but they can eventually destroy the organization by driving away its most capable members.
That is why a smooth personality is worth far more than impressive academic training or technical ability.

A group of researchers observed kindergarteners playing with crayons.
The kids seemed to enjoy it with great concentration and apparent pleasure for internal reasons.
Next, the researchers promised some of the children “Good Player Awards” for their drawing efforts with the crayons.
For one week, these children knew they would get a “prize” at the end of the week for their drawing behavior.
For the remaining children, no such promises were made.
There was a significant change in the crayon use among the kids promised external rewards.
Surprisingly, they spent much less time playing with crayons than before.
By contrast, the other children maintained their normal frequency and duration of use.

In a study in the United States, overweight patients who lost a mere seven percent of their total body weight reduced their risk for diabetes by fifty-eight percent.
Similar improvements have been reported for high blood pressure, heart disease, and even some kinds of cancer.
Excess belly fat puts stress on the body's internal organs and sets in motion the mechanics of some diseases.
But this belly fat goes first when you start to lose weight.
So your health will improve remarkably by just a little weight loss, even though your thighs don't get thinner.

Writing and editing are distinct processes.
Writing requires you to let the words flow as they come to you.
Editing requires you to stop and critically assess each word.
It is hard to stay in the creative flow when you are stopping after every word to criticize what you've just written.
If you try to write your first draft and edit it at the same time,
you're likely to lose your concentration and get caught up in details instead of delivering your message.
By the time you finish the first paragraph, you are likely to be frustrated and unable to remember what you originally intended to say.

And pleasure that I get from my children is diminished by the realization that they will probably distance themselves from me as they grow older.

I have no female friends and don't go in for traditional middle-class activities such as decorating or crafts classes where I might find someone with common interests.
I get no pleasure from food, because I am fighting a losing battle against weight gain.
I'm sure you have the picture by now that I'm a rather pessimistic.

I usually go to work by subway.
I get to work by 8:00 A.M.
Before I start my job, I put on my uniform and look at myself in the mirror and make sure that I look neat.
At 8:30 in the morning, I go on duty.
I usually eat lunch from twelve to one and generally take a ten-minute break in the morning and in the afternoon.
At 4:30 in the afternoon, I go off duty.

The ability to concentrate and to use your time well is everything if you want to succeed in business―or almost anywhere else, for that matter.
Ever since college I've always worked hard during the week while trying to keep my weekends free for family and recreation.
Except for periods of real crisis I've never worked on Friday night, Saturday, or Sunday.
Every Sunday night I get the adrenaline going again by making an outline of what I want to accomplish during the upcoming week.
It's essentially the same schedule I developed at Lehigh.

On June 16, I spent $600 in your store on a refrigerator, and a washing machine.
They were to be delivered to my home in Poughquag, N. Y.
Your salesman, Sam Casey, told me that shipping charges would come to about $17.
He suggested that the order be sent express collect by truck.
I agreed and paid immediately for the merchandise.
A couple of days later, he called to ask if it would be all right to ship by Railway Express.
He assured me that the charges would be about the same.
Again, I agreed.
You can imagine my feelings when the Railway Express agent called from Brewster, about twenty miles from Poughquag, to tell me that the items had arrived, and that shipping charges would be $22.
Further, that if I wished them delivered to my house, I should have to get a trucker and pay his charges, also.

I stood by at Jimmy's funeral and watched a parade of young people say goodbye to their good friend.
For most of these kids, I'm sure it was their first experience with death.
I have a 20-year old son myself.
I held him in my arms as he cried for the life he and his cousin Jimmy will never share.
We should try to get through to our kids the importance of seat belts.
I have never experienced anything so painful in my life as Jimmy's death.
We can't tell our kids too often to put their seat belts on and stay alive for their own sake as well as those who love them.

Lately, it seems most of the apartment fires in my area have been caused by children playing with matches or lighters.
I don't understand why parents leave these things around where youngsters can get their hands on them.
This is gross negligence.
Kids will always be curious, but parents must do more than just tell them that fire is dangerous.

Of course, as we grow older, we learn that the blunt expression of such curiosity will not put us at the top of the popularity charts.
We learn how to be kind, considerate of others' feelings, silent about their flaws, approving of their virtues.
We learn how to get along in the world by "not making waves."
In short, we become socially "acceptable."

The train's conductor, an African American, started a conversation.
This was the era of Civil Rights, Kent State and the Vietnam War.
He was highly intelligent and well-informed.
When it began to get dark, he stopped by to remind me that the dining car was closing "in case you want to eat."
I said I wasn't hungry, which was not true.

A half hour later, he came by and insisted that I accept two large pieces of chicken from his own lunch bag.
It was the most delicious meal I'd ever had.
After that feast, I dozed off.
Thank heavens he woke me up in time to get off and catch the train at Barstow.
If he hadn't awakened me, I never would have made it.

I commuted to college by trolley when I was 18.
A lovely girl always boarded a block after me.
I enjoyed sitting in the back of the car and watching her.
This went on for several weeks, but I could not get up the nerve to speak to her.

Dear Sons: This is not a request. It is an order.
