The Federal Trade Commission said on Tuesday the makers of a popular
and widely-advertised homeopathic remedy for the common cold had agreed
to settle charges they made unsubstantiated claims for the product.

동종요법 치료제 '콜드-에즈(Cold-Eeze)'에 대한 과대광고 시정조치를
내렸다.

19세기 초, 독일인 의사 Samuel Hahnneman에 의해 처음 창안된 치료요법의 하
나. 다량의 병원체에 의해 발병한 증상에 동일(유사)한 병원체를 극미량 가할
경우 그 증상이 오히려 치료가 된다는 이론에 그 근거를 두고 있다.
일반적으로 이러한 동종요법의 치료제는 동물성, 식물성 또는 광물성의
원료를 연속적으로 희석해 제조하는 데 경우에 따라선 박테리아나 바이러스를
함유하기도 한다(이때 이와같이 반복적으로 희석액을 더욱 희석하는 과정을
"약효강화”과정이라 하는 데 이는 치료제가 희석되면 될수록 더욱 그 약효가
강화가 되기 때문이다). 그런데 이렇듯 극도로 희석된 희석액을 사용하다보니
일부 정통의학계에선 그 유효물질이 쉽게 확인되지 않는다는 이유를 들어
동종요법을 무시하는 입장을 보이는 경우도 있다.

생의학 연구분야에서 세계최고권위를 자랑하는 미국립보건원은 최근 대표적
대체의료의 하나인 동종(同種)요법이 실제 건강에 도움을 줄 수 있다는
내용의 연구결과를 의학전문지 랜시트에 발표했다.
동종요법이란 건강한 사람에게 특정증상을 일으키는 물질을 농도를 낮춰 같은
증상을 앓는 환자에게 투여하면 치료된다는 원리를 지닌 서양특유의
대체의료를 말한다. 가령 겨자가스는 피부에 붉은 발진을 유발하는 유독
물질이지만 이미 발진증상을 앓고 있는 피부병 환자에게 농도를 묽게해
투여하면 오히려 피부병이 치료된다는 논리다.
The Quigley Corporation, which makes and markets Cold-Eeze brand zinc
lozenges, has agreed not to claim they can prevent colds, reduce the
risk of pneumonia, fight allergies and ease cold symptoms in children,
the FTC said.
이에 따라 징크 정제인 콜드-에즈를 제조하고 판매하는 퀴글리는 콜드-에즈가
감기를 예방하고 폐렴감염과 알레르기 질환 위험을 줄이며 어린이들의 감기

The settlement does not impact the company's primary claim that
Cold-Eeze can reduce the severity and duration of cold symptoms in
adults, FTC and company officials said.

``These settlements will ensure that consumers are no longer being
