1) ~와 거리가 멀다: know nothing about ~; be a complete stranger
It may [or can] safely be said that ~ ; We can safely say that ~
3) 그저 시간 죽이기: a mere means of killing time; only for an idle hour
They took it for granted that I would attend the reception.

ANS 2) It is not too much to say that a man who takes it for granted that reading books is borrowing them of others does not know anything about the true joy from reading. Such a man thinks reading is nothing but a mere means of killing time.

(ANS) We arrived at Chonju a little after six o'clock. Yong-ok and I had to take a local bus from there and travel one more hour. The defense may well raise objections to the court's decision to hear
the case twice a week, instead of the original schedule of once a week.
The defense, pleading for a more leisurely trial, argued the defendants'
health was being damaged and there was not enough time to prepare
from one session to the next, but lately they had abruptly started taking
issue with the judges'``bias'' toward the accused.

The wide fluctuation in Seoul's population by day and night makes
it clear that the new satellite cities like Pundang and Ilsan serve as
little more than ``bed towns'' or night-time shelters for workers
commuting to and from Seoul, mirroring a failure of the government's
policy to prevent Seoul from growing fat. At the same time, the
statistics emphasize the need for the current population control policy in
the metropolitan area to be strengthened.

The military exists to protect the nation from outside enemies. To do
its mission, it is imperative that the armed forces maintain full
preparedness against all possible contingencies, including natural
adversities. A fighting machine is useless if it is unable to ensure the
safety of its own components in peace time.

^^In general, 12 to 19 people are stationed at each of these
sub-stations working in three shifts with each team on duty for at
least 12 hours. At any one time, only one person is on duty at the box,
the other members of the team being out on patrol. This is not enough
to handle the work at the box. At least two officers should be on duty
there. And in order to have police work eight-hour shifts, and for there
to be three shifts a day, at the 3,404 boxes across the country, there
needs to be a 50 percent increase in the present 44,000 person police
force. Considerably more money from the government needs to be
spent to substantially improve the nation's police.

^^The fact is that the leaders of Hanchongnyon and the inter-Korean
Pomchonghangnyon youth-student confederation are regarded here as a
pro-Pyongyang group with their support for the North Korean proposal
that unification of the two Koreas should be brought about through a
confederation. The leftist students at the same time refuse to recognize
the miserable plight of the North Korean people under the hereditary
tyranny of Kim Il-sung and his son, Chong-il. Incidentally, the two
delegates from Hanchongnyon illegally sent to the North via Europe
reportedly bowed in tribute at the tomb of Kim Il-sung, laying a
bouquet there. Ironically, pro-North Korean radical student leaders
here have rarely expressed respect for any of South Korea's presidents.

S : However hard I study, I always get everything wrong. I'm just not cut out for school.
T : I see, but ...
S : Since my grades are low, my friends are keeping their distance from me, and ...
T : You just can't quit school. Remember many big goals can't be achieved overnight. It takes time.
You've got to do things one step at a time.
S : Okay, sir.

S1 : Al, let's go play tennis during our lunch break.
S2 : Right, you could learn a little something from me.
S1 : Haha, that's what you think!
S2 : Last time, I totally beat you. Well, you lost last time.
S1 : That's in the past. You never know what will happen today.
S2 : Let's bet 'Laboggi'.
S1 : Hold on! You want to bet on it?
S2 : You said you can beat me.
S1 : Well, it's a deal.
S2 : See you later then. Laboggi will be on you. Haha.

Although the artist used various media from time to time, she had a predilection for watercolors.

We must be careful to prevent a spirit of jingoism from spreading at this time; the danger of a disastrous war is too great.

Most people act superstitiously from time to time.
Many persons may joke about keeping away from bad luck by not walking under a ladder or avoiding the number 13.
But they have such beliefs anyway.
Scholars once believed that all superstitions dated back to man's early history.
But many superstitions have appeared in relatively recent times.

Last Sunday I paid a visit to the zoo in Washington D.C.
I visited the monkeys first.
They were of various types from different parts of the world.
They were all very active, though they had been in their cages for a long time.
Then, we went to the places where the tigers and the lions were kept.
These animals did not seem to be active like the monkeys.
They were all lying down and looking at the visitors.

If you recognize your friend Jack feels depressed, what should you do?
First talk to him about it.
Try to discover what he is feeling.
If you can't persuade him to discuss the problem,
try an approach like "you remind me of the time when I was depressed."
This may keep him from feeling lonely.
Then, provide emotional support.
Please don't forget to listen sympathetically, point out the realities of the situations and always offer hope.

Because of my job, I was only able to sail during summer vacations,
so the trip around the world had to be broken up into small pieces.
The first section was from New York to Bermuda.
From there, I went to Venezuela, then to the Galapagos Islands and Tahiti.
I wandered all through the South Pacific, stopping for long visits in Fiji.
Occasionally, I would be joined by friends.
But most of the time, my only companions were dolphins and flying fish.
Sometimes a bird would stop by to hitchhike or for a little rest.

His first encounter with music was the time when he used to visit his uncle in Owensboro.
Further, he received a guitar from his mother when he was in Florida, after which he shut himself in his room and started learning guitar.
He lost his interest in studies and became more and more attracted to rock-n-roll.
He practiced playing guitar for hours and became very good at it.
Soon, his next aim was to join a rock group to quench his thirst for becoming a rock star.

At one time, homeschooling was used for students who could not attend school because of learning difficulties.
Today, however, more parents are taking on the responsibility of educating their children at home due to dissatisfaction with the educational system.
Many parents are unhappy about class size.
In many schools, one teacher is responsible for thirty or forty students.
The result is often that children are deprived of the attention they need.
Increasing classroom violence has also motivated some parents to remove their children from school.

Reporter : What is the main role of your organization?
Mr. Kim : We gather opinions and requests from people and deliver them to the politicians.
And when we find some politicians not doing their jobs properly, we push them to do their best to fulfill their duties.
Reporter : Why did you choose to work here in Seoul?
Mr. Kim : Well, we talked over this issue for a long time.
And most of the members agreed that it would be better to have our office in the center of political power.
The decision was right and we'll stay here for a while.

Question : Are police fair to minorities?
James : Most police do treat minorities fairly.
If one officer makes a mistake, you can read about it everywhere.
Yet, thousands of police ―black, white, men, women―have been killed over the past years.
Betty : Blacks are not treated fairly.
Blacks have been in this country more than 400 years.
Yet, we are still treated as undesirables who should pack their bags and go back to Africa.
That is why we get no respect from the police.
Joe : Most of the time we forget that police are, in fact, people.
And they react in the same way we react.
On the whole they are doing a fine job.
Betty :

Archibald Spooner was well known in England for his slips of the tongue.
He was a teacher at Oxford University and a clergyman as well.
Dr. Spooner suffered from nervousness and poor eyesight.
This may have made it difficult for him to see words correctly and to repeat them accurately.
One time he told a student that he had “hissed the mystery lectures” when he meant to say “missed the history lectures.”
He told another student that the young man had “tasted a worm.”
He meant to say that the student had “wasted a term.”
Today, this particular type of pronunciation error is often called a “Spoonerism.”
Archibald Spooner
한번은 그가 어떤 학생에게 ‘missed the history lectures'(역사 강의를 빼 먹었다)를 말하려고 하면서, ‘hissed the mystery lectures'라고 말한 적이 있었다.

Suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease, Stephen Hawking, aged 56, is unable to speak or move anything except his eyes and three fingers.
But the Cambridge University physicist, widely regarded as the greatest cosmic thinker since Albert Einstein, is attempting nothing less than “a complete understanding of the universe.”
No one, however, has dared accuse him of arrogant pride.
After all, this is the guy whose 1988 book A Brief History of Time proved the biggest unread bestseller of all time.

My hometown is famous for its scenic beauty and its flowers.
The lilac fair is especially well known.
In the spring, when the lilacs are at their most beautiful, many people come from all over the country to visit the town and see the fair.
It is wonderful to see families walking together among the lilacs, parents carrying small children on their shoulders, while others run and play around them.
Meanwhile, teenagers dance to the rhythm of the music on their cassette players, and old people sit on park benches, eating their packed meals.
They all feel lucky to be alive and healthy at this time.
It is difficult for them to imagine a better day out.

Yesterday I ate lunch at your restaurant, which you advertised as “a dining paradise.”
It was so completely packed with people that the line snaked out the door, and by the time I reached the counter, I was exhausted.
I decided on the hamburger steak special and side dishes, but there was no potato salad left and the beans were burnt more than baked.
At the table, the truck driver sitting across from me wouldn't stop talking about highway taxes.
Finally, when I rose to leave, the waiter “kindly” yelled at me to clean up after myself.
Throwing away that plate of food was the most enjoyable part of dining at your restaurant.

Yesterday Gary Roberts, age 60, entered a bank at 4:59 p.m., just one minute before the closing time.
Roberts told a bank employee, “I want to deposit five thousand dollars―all in pennies.”
He pointed to several heavy bags next to him.
The employee said it was too late to help him.
But Gary Roberts refused to leave the bank and the police were called.
This was not the first time he made trouble with the bank.
One day last year, he came into the bank ten times.
Each time he took out one dollar from his account.
Nobody knows why he does these things.

When two people have troubles with each other, they often look to the law to decide who is right and who is wrong.
Laws exist so that there are guidelines for behavior ― what is the right thing to do and what is not right.
Unfortunately, as lawyer Peter Smith says in his book, the two sides in a court case can never really win.
The ones who “win” are the lawyers.
Even when one person is the “winner” in a court case, that person must pay his or her lawyers, must pay court costs, and suffers from bad feelings
― particularly the hostility of the other person in the case.
So Peter Smith suggests another solution that can save you from wasting time and money.

A small piece of wood from a campfire flies onto some dry grass and goes unnoticed.
Within the first few minutes this small fire may still be controllable, but in no time at all it's grown beyond the capability of the campers to put it out.
It could take hundreds of fire fighters many days to extinguish this fire.
This is exactly true of solving our everyday problems.
What happens to a little problem that doesn't get resolved when it's little?
It gets bigger and bigger until it becomes a real problem that's going to require a lot of time, energy, and resources to be solved.

When Gregg Navarez graduated from high school in Los Angeles, he borrowed $125 from a friend.
He planned to use the money to start his own cleaning business.
Some people thought that Gregg would never be able to repay the loan.
But they were wrong.
Within only three years, Gregg's business was flourishing.
By the time he was 21, he was making up to $6,000 a month.
Gregg's success story was a result of hard work and good business sense.

When honeybees fly in a garden, they may seem to skip from flower to flower at random.
Most people don’t know why bees choose one flower over another.
But the bees know why.
In fact, when searching for flowers’ nectar, they follow an exact timetable.
Bees get nectar from dandelions only in the morning.
Around noon, it’s the time for the cornflowers.
In the afternoon, bees take off for the red clover.
Honeybees go to each kind of flower at the time of day when it gives off the most nectar.

People can now watch a great variety of video tapes at home on the VCR.
Materials available include everything stocked at the local video store and movies or any other programs from the 24-hour selections on television, as well as tapes made at home or borrowed from friends.
Such entertainment in the home is also more affordable than it is in public places.
The greater convenience of watching tapes at any hour and pausing a tape or finishing it at a later time makes entertainment possible for people who have very limited opportunities to go to the movies or watch television.
The VCR also enables family and friends to be together in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoying one another’s company and also communicating in a way that is not possible in a movie theater.

We have moved from going to a football game once a week to having sports on television twenty-four hours a day.
Billions of dollars go to the salaries of sports heroes each year.
Clearly, we are obsessed with sports and in particular, winning at sports.
The effect on our children is tremendous;
some children have no time with one or both parents who are locked to the television on a daily basis.
More important is the huge increase in parental concern about their children being on a winning team.
Winning has become more important than playing to do your best and have fun.

Some years ago, Fortune magazine conducted a survey of many of the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies.
The goal was to try to find traits that these successful people had in common.
Surprising to say, there weren't many! Some of these top executives had gone to excellent universities, others not.
Some brought years of experience to their jobs, while others had enjoyed a quicker rise to success.
One of the few things they shared was that, along the way, they had each experienced a major career setback.
Most of them, in fact, had been fired from at least one job.
Understandably, none of them at the time felt they had been treated fairly.
Dwelling on life's unfairness and cruelties will not make your life better.
Those CEOs learned to move beyond setbacks.
We might even conclude that, without confrontation with negative events, they would not be where they are today.

Big doors swing on little hinges.
Most of the time, we don't see small hinges.
We don't pay attention to them.
They're small and hidden.
Yet without them, the door would not function at all.
Our attitudes, too, are the little hinges on which the big doors of our lives swing.
We can't control life's negative circumstances
―the doubled commutes, long lines at the grocery, or late-night calls from marketers.
Those are life's invariables.
Yet we can do something to cope with them.
We can control how we relate to them.
It's a simple choice, a simple step you can take.
The right attitude will keep all the mechanisms of your life in top working order.
Choosing the right attitude will profoundly change your life.

Dear Sally,
I'm so excited to hear that you're finally going to visit me here in Seoul.
I've really missed you since I moved away from Australia and I've been waiting for you to come for so long.
I've made an arrangement to take off a couple of weeks from work, so I'll be able to spend a lot of time with you.
Please let me know what you want to do here and I'll prepare everything for it.
You should check out the highlights of Korea online.
If you want to go somewhere outside of Seoul, just let me know and I'll be happy to rent a car.
I hope that I'll be able to do many things with you.
I can't wait to see you.
Bye for now,
Suzanne
Sally
Suzanne

In the mid-sixties, a lawyer made an agreement to give some money every month to an old lady in her seventies.
After she died, he would then live in her apartment.
This contract seemed beneficial to both of them.
As for the old lady, she received a fixed amount of money from him monthly.
And as for the lawyer, he would obtain the apartment without paying a large amount of money at one time.
Besides, he thought that she would die before long considering the average life expectancy.
In those days, it was about 70.
However, she lived to be 122 years old.
He had given money to her for 30 years, but he died in advance of her.

New scientific research confirms that the prime time in life for learning a second language is from birth through age 10 or 12.
Newsweek calls it the “window of opportunity" for languages.
In Europe, kids commonly learn a second language at the same time as their first.
Why? Because it will never be as easy again.
The secret is to start early.
Now, the world famous British Broadcasting System brings Europe's long success with language learning to America.
The acclaimed BBS Language Course for Children uses the award-winning video character Muzy, compelling stories and delightful songs to bring language to life.
This could be the most important gift you ever give your child.

College is totally different from high school because you are on your own.
I cannot stress too much about the idea of learning independence.
You discover so much about yourself in college.
There is no one to walk you to class.
You need to motivate yourself because there is no one to make you do your schoolwork, set your schedule, or get to class on time.
You gain a better sense of self and find yourself maturing when you are away from home.

The rich and unhappy are likely to prize possessions such as a fancy car or an expensive necklace.
Unfortunately, they don't see objects as a link to other people but as something to stand out from others.
For example, Doris Duke was the only child of a multi-millionaire.
By the time she reached adulthood, she could fulfill any desire
from the B-25 bomber she remodeled for luxury travel, to her ceiling-high goldfish tanks.
Yet when she died three years ago, news reports detailed a lonely life of deep unhappiness.

Arthur Ashe was the first African American to become a world tennis champion.
He was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1943.
His father supervised the tennis courts in a park near their home.
As a young boy, Arthur liked to watch the tennis players.
Ron Clarity, one of the players, taught Arthur how to play tennis.
Arthur's dream was to join the U.S. Davis Cup Tennis Team.
But, in Richmond, at that time, most tennis courts were for white people only, and all the tennis officials were white.
They did not encourage Arthur to play.
However, he did not let them stop him from playing.
Arthur Ashe

The more technical the automation becomes, and the more quickly the world changes, the more we need information from just the right person arriving in our lives at just the right time.
You don't need a formal education to do that; just a niche you've created for yourself through self-education.

After receiving a lecture from my boss about paying attention to details, I decided to see if he practiced what he preached.
When I prepared the payroll checks for the next pay period, I added two extra zeros to mine.
Then I brought the batch in for his signature.
I stood at his desk as time and again he wrote his name with a flourish ―"Tom A. Grandel."
When he finished, he gave me the checks to distribute.
Soon afterward I opened mine.
On the signature line, in my boss's elegant handwriting, was "Try And *Getit."
*Getit: Get it을 붙여 쓴 것임.

We probably all have discovered, at some time or another in our lives, the treasure hidden beneath a seeming misfortune, the silver lining behind the cloud, the blessing in disguise.
Through a relationship that doesn't work out, we accidentally meet the person who's right for us.
We get laid off from a job, only to find another that was far better suited to our talents and needs.
We break a leg, end up in the hospital for two weeks, and are able to catch up on all the reading, resting and visiting that we'd never had time for until our "terrible" accident.

From what I've seen, you either get grounded in that kind of positive thinking early on in life or you don't.
Establishing priorities and using your time well aren't things you can pick up at the Harvard Business School.
Formal learning can teach you a great deal, but many of the essential skills in life are the ones you have to develop on your own.

Shortly after Daughter No. 2 returned from her honeymoon, she asked for the same amount of money we had spent on her sister's education.
My husband told her he would have sent her to college had she chosen to go, but we could not give her that much money.
I've felt bad about this for a long time because I'm afraid she feels we favored her older sister.

The United States faces a transportation crisis.
U.S. highways and airways are getting more and more crowded.
In the next 20 years, the time that automobile drivers lose because of crowded highways is expected to increase from 3 billion to 12 billion hours a year.
During the same time period, the number of airplane flights with delays of more than eight minutes is predicted to triple.
For both highway and air travel, the estimated cost of delay to passengers will rise from $15 billion a year today to $61 billion 20 years from now.

A half hour later, he came by and insisted that I accept two large pieces of chicken from his own lunch bag.
It was the most delicious meal I'd ever had.
After that feast, I dozed off.
Thank heavens he woke me up in time to get off and catch the train at Barstow.
If he hadn't awakened me, I never would have made it.

One day, my mother received a call from a choir director who needed an organist.
Mother said it was time I had a church job and told me to attend a service and think about it.
I did, and who should come in with the choir but the same wondrous creature I bad been admiring on the trolley.
She was the choir director's daughter.
I took the job immediately.

My husband's schedule changed, and we had to adjust to getting ready for work at the same time.
To adapt, he would grab his toiletries from the bathroom and dash to the kitchen sink to brush his teeth.
One morning he took off down the hall with his supplies.
I was running late and hollered after him, "Come back! I need a squeeze."
After he gave me a long, ardent embrace, I hated to tell him all I had wanted was some toothpaste!
