The highlight of the adventure came when our van spotted a lion lazily snoring in his sleep.
As the lion woke up, it jumped from beneath the tree and pounded towards the fear-stricken gazelles.
The lion tackled his prey from behind, and the gazelle crashed into the ground right in front of our van.
When I had recovered from the shock, the lion calmly caught his prey in the mouth, and carried it to the nearest tree.
When he feasted on his menu, I could hear the sounds of bones crunching.
When I realized myself in the van, horror in my face disappeared slowly.
I felt like the National Geographic photographer as I took pictures of the lion deeply occupied in his feast.

Whom, then, do I call educated, since I exclude the arts and sciences and specialties?
First, those who manage well the circumstances which they encounter day by day, and who possess a judgment which is accurate in meeting occasions as they arise and rarely misses the expedient course of action;
next, those who are decent and honorable in their intercourse with all with whom they associate, tolerating easily and good-naturedly what is unpleasant or offensive in others and being themselves as agreeable and reasonable to their associates as it is possible to be;
furthermore, those who hold their pleasure always under control and are not duly overcome by their misfortunes, bearing up under them bravely and in a manner worthy of our common nature;
finally, and most important of all, those who are not spoiled by successes and do not desert their true selves and become arrogant, but hold their ground steadfastly as intelligent men, not rejoicing in the good things which have come to them through chance rather than in those which through their own nature and intelligence are theirs from their birth.
Those who have a character which is in accord, not with one of these things, but with all of them―these, I contend, are wise and complete men, possessed of all the virtues.

Once upon a time, the animals organized a school.
They adopted a curriculum consisting of running, climbing, swimming and flying.
All animals took all the subjects.
The duck was excellent in swimming, better in fact than his instructor, and made excellent grades in flying, but he was very poor in running.
Since he was low in running he had to stay after school and also drop swimming to practice running.
This was kept up until his feet were badly worn and he was only average in swimming.
But average was acceptable in school, so nobody worried about that except the duck.
The squirrel was excellent in climbing until he developed frustrations in the flying class where his teacher made him start from the ground up instead of from the tree-top down.
He also developed charley horses from over-exertion and he got poor grades in climbing and running.
The eagle was a problem child.
In climbing class he beat all the others to the top of the tree, but insisted on using his own way of getting there.
He had to be disciplined severely.
The rabbit started at the top of the class in running, but had a nervous breakdown because of so much time spent in making up for his poor performance in swimming and flying.
So he dropped out of school and started his own private school for running and hopping.

The population problem set in, and was dealt with in two different ways:
those who lived in the middle of the forest learned to throw coconuts with such accuracy as to disable adversaries, whose consequent death relieved the pressure of population,
but those who lived on the edge of the forest found another method:
they looked out the fields and discovered that they yielded delicious fruits of various kinds quite as pleasant as coconuts,
and gradually they came down from the trees and spent more and more time in the open on the ground
they soon discovered that if you live on the ground it is easy to pick up stones, which are more effective missiles than coconuts.

◆ foot, feet, leg
He hardly ever puts a foot wrong. He never seems to make any mistakes.
My feet hardly touched the ground. I was so busy.
They have really fallen on their feet. They inherited a lot of money and bought a lovely holiday house in the Bahamas.
He hasn't got a leg to stand on. What he did was quite wrong and cannot be excused.
Come on, shake a leg. We haven't got all day. We've got to finish this by lunchtime.
He started off on the wrong foot by arriving late on his first day at work.
The first leg of the journey was from Paris to Barcelona. The second leg was from Barcelona to Rabat.
I like to put my feet up after a hard day's work and spend the entire evening relaxing.
You will have to put your foot down. It's about time he learnt that he cannot have everything he wants.
