→ 쇠고기와 돼지고기를 섞어서 훈제한 소시지로 유명한 도시 볼로냐(Bologna)에서 유래. 따로 먹을 때보다 맛이 덜해서 상대방이 말도 안 되는 소리를 할 때나 특히 선거전에서 상대방의 발언을 깎아 내릴 때 자주 사용되는 표현.

keep up with the Joneses: 이웃과 보조를 맞추다(to maintain the same lifestyle as one's friends and neighbors)
→ 1913년 A.R.Momand가 잡지에 연재한 만화제목으로 일종의 허영심에서 나오는 쓸데없는 경쟁심을 지적.

(4) 책은 빌려 읽는 것이라고 단정짓는 사람은, 정말이지 독서의 즐거움과는 거리가 먼 사람이라고 할 만하다. 그 같은 사람은 독서를 단지 시간을 죽이는 것으로 밖에 생각하지 않는 것이다.

가장 일반적으로 쓰이는 낱말이 bear이고 stand는 bear보다 좀더 구어적이며 일상적인(colloquial and informal) 표현에서 쓰이며, endure는 「좀더 장기간에 걸쳐 참고 견딘다」는 뜻을 나타낸다.
I can't bear that dull friend of yours./ I can't stand all this noise.
The capacity to endure a more or less monotonous life is one which should be acquired in childhood.
tolerate는 사람이나 행위를 대상으로 할 뿐 고통 등을 목적어로 삼지 못하며 「아량을 가지고 (참는다)」는 뜻을 내포한다.
I can't tolerate this unruly behavior.
persevere는 「(어려운 상황에서도) 끈기 있게 버텨나간다」는 뜻을 갖는다.

[比較] remember, recall, recollect, reminisce
remember는 가장 일상적인 낱말로 과거의 일이 노력하는 일없이 마음에 떠오르는 경우에도 쓰이고, 과거의 일을 상기하려는 의지가 발동되어 있는 경우에도 쓰인다. recall은 remember보다 formal style에서 쓰이며 상기하려는 의지·노력이 수반되는 경우에 쓰인다. 또한 recollect는 remember, recall…의 뜻을 갖는 이외에 흔히 기억이 불완전한 과거의 여러 가지 일들을 마음의 여유를 가지고 회상하고 연결시키는 심리작용을 가리킨다.

reminisce는 기억이 불완전한 과거의 여러 가지 일을 마음의 여유를 가지고 즐기면서 상기한다는 뜻을 갖고 있는 낱말이며 「곰곰이 회상한다」라는 뜻도 있다.

remember가 「마음속에서 상기한다」는 뜻만을 갖는데 반해서 recall, recollect, reminisce는 이와 같은 뜻 이외에 「과거 일을 회상하여 그것을 삼자에게 말로 표현한다」는 뜻도 지닌다.

[比較] after, behind
「뒤에」를 의미하는 전치사·형용사·부사로서 동의어를 이루지만 서로 바꿔 쓰일 수는 없다. 장소·위치에 관해서 말할 때 after는 움직이는 것의 전후·순서를 나타내는 데에 운동을 표시하는 동사·명사와 함께 쓰인다.
The faculty marched in pairs, one after another.
이렇게 쓰이는 경우 어느 것이 앞서고 뒤서는지를 전혀 나타내지 않는다. run after a person은 그 사람 앞에 서려는 노력을 나타낼 뿐이다. 정지 상태의 동사와 함께 쓰이는 경우에도 운동의 전후·순서가 문맥에 의해 나타날 뿐이다. One stays after the others는 after the others who have left를, One calls after a person은 after a person who is walking ahead를, One looks after the children of a friend는 after the children of a friend who is away, ill, or engaged(집을 비웠거나 병을 앓는, 혹은 볼일이 있는 친구의 아이들의 뒤를)를 암시한다.
behind는 지거나, 남이 떠나간 후에 남아 있는 것을 가리킨다. 시간에 관해서 말할 때, after는 behind보다 훨씬 많이 쓰이는 말로 순서의 전후를 가리키는 데에 반드시 요구되는 말이다.

danger는 가장 일반적인 말이며 손상(injury)· 해악(evil)이 일어날 가능성이 예상되지만, 반드시 닥쳐온다던가 모면할 수 없다던가 하는 것은 의미하지 않는다.
the danger of failing on icy walks(빙판 길에서 넘어질 위험)/ troubled by the danger that the manuscript might be lost/ Miners at work are always in danger.
peril은 보통 절박한 뜻이 danger보다 강하고, 더 큰 두려움을 초래하며, 상실과 손상의 가능성도 한층 높은 것을 의미한다.

When a mine caves in, the miners are in peril.(광산의 지반이 떨어지면 광부들은 큰 위험을 당한다.)
jeopardy는 보통 흔히 쓰이지 않는 말이고, 본질적으로는 peril과 같은 뜻이지만, 우연한 곤경에 처하는 것, 그리고 극도의 위험에 처하는 것을 강조한다.

special은 다른 것과 구별되는 독특한 성격·성질·용도를 가진 것을 말한다. 보통이 아닌 것(uncommon)이기 때문에 유별난 배려와 취급을 받는 것, 또한 생각에 마땅히 그런 것을 본받아야 하는 것을 말한다.
The baby requires a special soap and a special powder./ He is a special friend of mine.
particular는 주의를 끌기 위해서 같은 종류의 많은 다른 것 중에서 골라내는 것 또는 어떤 사물의 개성·특이성을 강조한다.

또 논리학에서 particular는 universal(보편적인)의 반대어로, 「특수한」이란 뜻으로 같은 종류의 하나 또는 몇몇에 관한 명제·판단·개념 따위에 관해서 쓰인다.
Some men are highly intelligent.는 particular proposition(특칭 명제)이고 All men make mistakes.는 universal proposition(총칭 명제)이다.
specific은 철학·과학용어로는 generic(속에 특유한)의 반대어로, genus(속)와 구별되는「species(종)에 독특한」을 의미한다.

purloin은 본래 멀리 옮기다. 한편에 두다(remove far off, set to one side)를 의미했을 뿐이지만, 도둑질과 관련하여 슬쩍 빼돌리는 것이 강하게 든「도둑질하다, 훔치다」의 뜻으로, 지금은 문어로 쓰인다.
letters purloined by a blackmailer/ A certain document of the last importance has been purloined from the royal apartments.
pilfer는 작은 분량을 또는 사소한 물건을 훔치는 것, 즉「좀도둑질하다」또는 때로 steal이 너무 가혹스럽게 들릴 때에 완곡어로 쓰이며고, steal은 도둑당한 물건을 목적어로 삼아, He stole money from a friend.처럼 쓴다. 전자는 사람에 중점이 있고, 후자는 물건에 관심을 둔 표현이다.
hold up은 미국에서 흉기를 가지고 통행인의 길을 막고 강탈하는 것을 말한다. 이런 범인을 a hold-up man이라고 하는데, robber가 금품을 빼앗는데 비해, 이것은 금전을 빼앗는데 흔히 쓰인다. 그러나 이 구별은 확립된 것은 아니다.

cling은 팔·뿌리·덩굴손 따위로 껴안거나, 감거나 붙잡거나 해서 달라붙는 것을 가리킨다.

비유적 용법에서는 의지 또는 원조의 필요를 암시하기도 하고, 때로는 가지고 있던 것·믿던 것·쓰던 것 따위를 그대로 간직하려는 고집을 암시하기도 한다.

cleave는 시적이고 고상한 말로 바짝 굳게 부착하는 것을 암시하고 사람에 쓰이는 경우에는 깊은 정성과 애착심을 나타낸다.

surprise는 가장 일반적인 말로, 불의의 습격을 당하듯이, 뜻밖의 일을 당해서 놀란다는 뜻이다.
I'm surprised at your concern. 이것은 비교적 새로운 뜻이고, 본래의 옛 뜻은 '놀라도록 불시에 습격하다‘(come upon another suddenly and with starting effect), ’방심하고 있는 틈을 타서 치다’. 이 옛 뜻에서 흔히 능동태로 사람이 주어가 되어, Her friends planned to surprise her on her birthday with a gift.처럼 쓰이고, 새로운 뜻으로는 물건이 주어가 되어, Their gift greatly surprised and pleased her.처럼 쓰인다.
astonish는 놀라서 일어난 충격의 상태를 가리키고, 놀라게 한 사물을 설명하거나 그 이유를 밝힐 수 없음을 암시한다. 언제나 정신을 잃고 멍하니 있는 꼴, 또는 말문이 막힌 꼴을 암시한다. 어원 ex-, out+tonare, thunder(벼락으로)가 보여주듯이, 벼락을 맞은 것처럼 놀란 것을 말한다. 현대용법에서는 단지 믿을 수 없을 정도로 크게 놀라다라는 뜻으로 쓰인다.

dumfound는 순간적으로 말문이 막힐 정도로 어리둥절한 것을 말한다. dumb(벙어리의)과 confound(당황케하다)의 합성어로 추정되어서 그런지, 영국에서는 dum(b)found의 철자가 쓰이고 있으나, 미국에서는 -b- 없는 철자가 쓰이고 있다.

flabbergast는 구어에서 쓰이는 말로, 갑자기 놀라서 말문이 막히는 것을 의미한다.

turn은 일반적인 색채 없는 말로, 한번 원형으로 도는 것, 몇 번이고 회전하는 것 또는 원의 일부분을 그리는 운동을 나타내며, 축 또는 한 중심의 둘레를 도는 것을 가리킨다. 여기 나오는 다른 말들과 대개 바뀌어 쓰일 수이다.

confident는 철썩같이 믿을 수 있는 친구이며. 어느 상황에서도 믿을 수 있는 친구이다. best friend와 비슷한 말로 쓰인다.
best friend는 가장 친한 친구라는 뜻으로 confident를 뜻할 수도 있다.
buddy는 스스럼없는 친구를 일컫는다. "He's my buddy"라고 하면 "그는 스스럼없는 구야"라는 뜻이 된다. best friend일지도 모르고 confident일지도 모른다. 또한 buddy라는 단어는 "아, 이 사람아," "이 녀석아"정도의 스스럼없는 호칭이기도 하다.
friend는 보통 친구를 일컫는다. 친구가 아니어도 가끔 조금 잘 아는 사람을 일컬을 때 주의하지 않고 사용되는 경우를 볼 수 있다.
