복수중앙은행제도를 채택하고 있는데 미 전역을 12개의 연방준비구로
나누어 각 구역마다 하나의 연방준비은행을 설립, 그 지역 중앙은행으로서의
기능을 수행하게 하고 있다. 이들 12개의 연방준비은행을 연결 통합하는
것이 연방준비제도이사회. 지급준비율 변경, 주식거래에 있어서의 신용규제,
가맹은행의 정기성예금 금리 규제, 연방준비은행의 재할인율 결정 권한이
있다.
