I hope I won't be forced to sit through four of these long speeches.

A careful study of these damaged parts has forced us to the conclusion that the damage has been caused through careless handling by the shipping company.

The company was forced to retreat through the barrage of heavy cannons.

Sue : Important social skills can be achieved through other activities, such as charity work for old people, instead of sports classes.
When something is forced, the benefits it may bring are destroyed.
After all, you can take a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.
Taking part in a sports class should therefore be a matter of free choice for the students, although encouraged by the school.

Their *far-fetched argument should not be allowed to *gloss
over their obvious motive to defend the vested interests of
their professions. We should be able to preserve the
integrity of our unique culture on its own merits and inner
strength, not just through government quotas, which *belittle
the *resilience of a culture that has survived repeated
foreign invasions.
▲ farfetched: resulting in a forced way, strained: 무리한
▲ gloss over; to speak well of: 그럴듯한 말로 얼버무리다
▲ belittle: to make seem little or less: 얕보다, 흠잡다
▲ resilience: quality of quickly recovering the original
shape and condition: 탄성 회복력

[John's Diary]
It was passed the rush hour and they must have increased the
train intervals. It would take much longer than usual to get
to the theater, I thought. Shit! The theater was just a stop
away. What a day! Wasted time and money for nothing! At this
point I began to think that I should have tried running to
the theater. After about 10 minutes, I heard the next train
pulling in. People didn't bother to line up and stormed
towards the train. The PA system cranked out a warning to get
on the train in an orderly fashion, but that didn't prevent
the fat lady behind me from jumping the line and forcing her
way through the crowd.
1. It was passed the rush hour:
지났다고 할 때 It is passed ~를 씁니다.
2. They must have increased the train intervals: Train
She must have missed the train, or she should be here by now.
3. It would take much longer than usual: 여기서 would를 쓴
Will에도 추정의
4. Get to the theater: 도착하다는 arrive를 흔히 쓰지만,
When you get there, please call me.
5. For nothing:
Good for nothing이라는
You're good for nothing.
pull in한다고 합니다.
7. Didn't bother to line up:
Please, don't bother. It's too much of a hassle.
8. Stormed towards the train: Storm
The loan sharks stormed into my office.
9. The PA system cranked out a warning: PA는 public
Crank it up이라는 말도 잘 쓰는 데요.
10. Jumping the line:
Jump the gun이라는 말도
11. Force one's way through: 동사 + one's way + 전치사 형태는
He forced his way through the crowd.
He elbowed his way into the bus.
He felt his way out of the room.
She kept up the relationship with them.
그렇게 관계를 유지하는걸 keep up the relationship (with someone)이라고 합니다.
그냥 keep up with someone만 써도 같은 뜻이예요.
They've kept up with each other even as they broke up.
I try to keep up the relationship with those I met when I
worked as a teaching student.
