Q: I've heard many industrial parts are made by subcontractors in Korea. Is this correct?
A: That's right. Except for key components and parts, about 70p of the parts are made by subcontractors.
Q: I personally think that it would be more economical for your company to manufacture all the necessary parts at your own plants.
A: There are two reasons why we use subcontractors.
One is that we can get parts we need from subcontractors at a lower cost than from our own plants.
Secondly, we can save money by not having to keep the parts at the warehouse.

1) 진실로: really; from the bottom of one's heart
2) 희망하다: hope [or wish] for; aspire after

→ 역사적 업적: historical achievement(s)
→ 기네스북: the Guinness Book of Records
One can look in the Guinness Book of Records for evidence of this.
→ …로 말하자면: speaking of~
→ 금속활자: metal (printing) type
→ 12세기말 또는 13세기초: something during the late 12th century or early 13th century
ANS) There are many historical achievements of which we Koreans are proud. One can look in the Guinness Book of Records for evidence of this. 3.
→ 사용하다: exploit; avail oneself to ~
→ 인간을 위해서: for the benefit of man; for man's interest
→ 끌어들이다: bring into; introduce into ~
→ 당당한/ 의젓한: grand; magnificent
→ 자연의 나무나 흙: natural wood and clay
→ 작은 정원: a miniature garden
→ 옮겨넣다: transfer into; carry in
(ANS 1) The Korean are more inclined to bring nature into their lives than to exploit it for the benefit of man. They prefer to build their houses out of natural wood and clay rather than to build grand mansions out of stone. Inside the houses they make miniature gardens, into which they transfer nature. To be always with nature _ this is the Korean attitude toward nature.
(ANS 2) Korean people have more inclination to introduce nature into their lives than to use it for man' interest. They want to have their houses built out of natural wood and clay more than to have magnificent mansions built out of stone. Inside the houses they make miniature gardens, in which they carry nature. To be always in the bosom of nature _ this is the way Korean people deal with nature.

[比較] use, employ, utilize, exploit, work
use a pencil(telephone)/ Use your eyes, child! It's right there in front of you!
He's only using you./ He used his brother to advance himself.
I could use your help this afternoon. I could use you this afternoon.
use eggs in cooking/ All the butter has been used.
used books/ Used cars and trucks were being marketed in this fashion.
She had employed her leisure in reading every book that came in her way./ employ a vacant lot as a playground/ He employs five mechanics.
A writer uses words effectively who knows what ones he should employ in a given context.
Well, you'll just have to utilize what's there.
He exploited the concession to the last penny.(그는 이권을 모두 이용해 먹었다.)
They have exploited that child mercilessly.
He worked the soil.(그는 땅을 갈았다.)/ If the clay is worked in the hands it will soon become soft and malleable.
She's been working him for forty years.

He has good connections.
Would you put in a word for me?
He pulled strings to get a promotion.
He used his connections to get a promotion.
I have no connections 또는 I have no strings to pull.

Mr. Kim took a trip abroad for the first time.
True, he could study his subject directly,
but he regretted he could not use English, saying, "I should have learned to speak it before my departure."

In general, we think perfume is only for women.
But today perfume has various kinds of uses.
Plastic that smells like leather is one example.
Also, scientists are finding that some smells make us feel better.
They help us to relax, to sleep, or to feel happier.
Scientists found that the smell of apples with spices can make our blood pressure go down.
In the future we may use perfume in a completely different way.

Chopsticks are handy eating tools that have been around for a very long time.
The Chinese invented them over 2500 years ago.
Chopsticks are still used widely today, even though many people in Japan and China are using knives and forks
because they want to learn more about Western ways of eating.
While interest in using knives and forks is growing throughout Asia,
more and more Americans are learning to use chopsticks.
They use them mainly when they eat in Asian restaurants.
Waiters in most Japanese, Korean and Chinese restaurants in America will give you chopsticks if you ask for them.

Americans make no distinction between gesturings for silence to an adult or to a child.
An American will put one finger to the lips for both,
while an Ethiopian will use only one finger to a child and four fingers for an adult.
To use only one finger for an adult is disrespectful.
On the other hand, Ethiopians make no distinction in gesturing to indicate emphatic negation.
They shake their index finger from side to side to an adult as well as to a child,
while this gesture is used only for children by Americans.
Thus, if visitors are not conscious of the meaning of such behavior,
they not only will offend their hosts but they will be offended by them.

Our experience of life comes through our five senses.
Each sense gives us specific and useful information about our physical world.
Imagine for a moment that you didn't have the sense of smell.
How much less rich your world would be.
In our traditional work culture we act as if we have only one sense, either visual or auditory.
Most of us are trained to use one of these two senses as our dominant sense, to the exclusion of our other senses.
Learning to use all your senses is a good way to enrich every moment of your life.

We use and abuse chimpanzees at will for medical research, for entertainment, or simply out of personal greed.
Being blind to their suffering, we don't try to understand how similar they are to us.
Chimpanzees nurture their young and mourn their dead.
They have distinct personalities and can express a variety of emotions from love to rage.
Yet for all their similarities, we appear to think little of their pain and suffering if our interests are served.
Watching chimps lying vacant eyed with tubes dangling from their arms,
we seem to enjoy torturing the creatures who look and behave so much like ourselves.

E-commerce, using information technology, is a quickly growing way to do business.
In this approach to business, a company or a person develops a Website on the Internet to sell or buy a product or service.
They advertise their product through links to other sites.
They also develop and use safe ways on the Internet for people to buy things, usually using credit cards.
People anywhere in the world can find the Website and decide if they want to buy the product or service.

This discovery changed human history.
People were able to travel faster and farther with horses.
They were able to leave their own land.
Many people went to distant lands, met new people, and saw new places.
They taught other people how to use horses.
Then, about 3,500 years ago, people in Mesopotamia began to use horses to help them win wars against their enemies.
They drove chariots, or carts, pulled by two or more horses.
It was impossible for an enemy on foot to fight against a soldier in a chariot.
As a result, armies with horses and chariots were very powerful.

Blindness is one of the most difficult of human handicaps because our eyes are so important to our learning.
One thing making education possible and life more pleasant for the blind is the development of a system by which they are able to learn to read.
Since the blind cannot use their eyes, they are taught to use the sense of touch in their fingers.
Reading raised printed matter of the common type is very, very difficult.
The special system now used was invented by Charles, and perfected by Louis Braille.

Reporter : What is the basic aim of the course?
Goldstein : It is to equip students with the basic skills of diplomacy.
They should know which fork to use, for which course at a banquet anywhere in the world.
They should know how to organize a full-scale world summit.
Reporter : Are all the diplomats honest people, or are they liars?
Goldstein : “An ambassador is an honest man sent abroad to lie for his country.”
So said Sir Henry Wotton in the 16th century.
Nowadays, of course, the complete diplomat needs just a few more skills.

Most people are afraid of sharks, but they usually do not know very much about them.
Sharks do not have ears.
However, they hear sounds and movements in the water.
Any sound or movement makes the water vibrate.
Sharks can feel these vibrations, and they help the sharks find food.
Sharks use their large eyes to find food, too.
Scientists want to learn more about sharks for several reasons.
For example, cancer is very common in many animals, including people.
However, it is rare in sharks.
Scientists want to find out why sharks almost never get cancer.
Maybe this information can help people prevent cancer, too.

Glittering gems called diamonds are among the most precious of human possessions.
Through the ages, they have been a lasting evidence of wealth.
Lands may lose their soil, buildings may be destroyed, stocks and bonds may become worthless, but the value of diamonds remain relatively unchanged.
In addition, the diamond is the hardest substance ever known.
Because of this, it is of great value for practical use.
In fact, about three-fourths of the total annual supply of diamonds is used in factories and machine shops.

Most people have great difficulties making their own decisions when they are not sure what to do.
They often let close friends and relatives influence them through opinions.
They even allow gossiping neighbors to express their thoughts for them.
If you are influenced by the opinions of others whenever you reach decisions, you will not succeed in anything you do.
Remember you have a brain and mind of your own.
You should use it and reach your own decisions.

With the global population expected to rise to 9 billion within 50 years, GM technology is giving hope to people around the world.
They think GM crops can offer bigger harvests, better quality, and less need for spraying poisons to kill insects.
Not surprisingly, the use of GM seeds has quickly become popular among farmers.
More than fifty percent of all crops planted in the U.S.
are from GM seeds, including tomatoes, corn, and potatoes.

They were born out of the habit of Korean housewives of making good use of small, otherwise useless, pieces of leftover cloth.
They are easily folded and take up little space.
So they have become a part of everyday Korean customs and practices.
Although they were created for everyday use, they have added style to special occasions.
A typical example of this is to wrap wedding gifts.
They are also convenient and safe when used to carry things.
Furthermore, they are more durable, economical and environment-friendly than paper or plastic bags.

ected, owned, or exhibited in the traditional sense.
Often preferring concepts over materials, modern artists use materials in the broadest sense.
As a result, they have gone beyond the natural environment.
Their works use everything from neon lights and computers to the artists' own bodies, as artistic mediums.
Artists and art works can therefore become identical, as in the case of Body Art.
On the other hand, they can be distant from each other.
For example, an artist might phone workers in a museum, instructing them on how to make a work that he has not seen or touched himself.

When we hear about wetlands such as swamps and bogs, we are often reminded of unpleasant experiences:
we get swamped with homework and bogged down in math problems.
This makes it hard to realize the importance of wetlands.
Wetlands are important to many kinds of animals and plants that live there.
Some birds nest in wetlands and others use them for rest stops during flights.
Wetlands are important to people, too.
People visit wetlands to fish, take pictures and just listen to the sounds and enjoy being outdoors.
Wetlands also help us in other ways.
They control flooding by soaking up water like a sponge and then letting it out later on.

Credit card misuse remains at an alarmingly high level.
It is a cause not only of personal tragedies, but also of more serious social problems.
But how can we deal with this situation?
Whatever solution we choose, it must focus on changing consumers' spending habits for the better.
Up to now, people have been encouraged to use credit cards for various reasons.
This was good for those who used their cards wisely, but many have taken on large debts as a result.
Now is the time, therefore, to emphasize sensible individual credit card use.
Various financial support programs can be helpful in this, but unless consumers spend within their means, there can be no solution.

Because of technological advances, now more than ever before, personal privacy is hard to achieve.
For example, if you use a credit card, every charge you make is on a database that police, among others, can check.
If you use an automatic bank teller, the bank records the time, date, and location of your transaction.
Those bank records can be checked by anyone who has your Social Security number.
If you browse the Web, you should also know that many sites record what you looked at and when you were surfing.
Some web sites have been known to share information about who’s been looking at what sites.

You have probably heard of fingerprints, but do you know about noseprints?
These are not for people.
These are for cows.
Farmers use these to aid them in knowing if a cow belongs to them.
Farmers also use these to stop people who steal cattle.
A cow’s nose has lines and circles on it just as a person’s fingers do.
No two cows have these wholly alike.
These vary from cow to cow.
That is why these can help farmers know if a cow belongs to their herd.

Like animals, people also use different languages.
Each culture has its own words and symbols that are used by people within that culture to communicate with others in the same culture.
For example, a person living in Japan will use the Japanese language to communicate with other Japanese.
Unlike animals though, some cultures use more than one language.
People within these cultures are said to be either bilingual or multilingual.
One such place is Canada.
It is very likely that a person living in Canada may speak both French and English.
Likewise, a person living in Switzerland may speak Italian, German and French.

It is difficult to say just how urbanized the world has become.
With urban growth taking place rapidly, it is impossible even for experts to do more than provide estimates.
According to the UN data, almost half of the world’s population is now urban.
These data make the very different definitions of urban used by different countries.
Some countries count any settlement of 1,000 people or more as urban,
while others use 10,000 as the minimum for an urban settlement; and Japan uses 50,000 as the cut-off.
This, by the way, tells us that urbanization is a relative phenomenon.
In countries like Peru, a settlement of 2,000 represents a significant center.
However, a much larger concentration of people is required to count as “urban.”

The combine relieved farmers of much of the burden of harvest.
It enabled farmers to rescue crops which otherwise might have been lost.
The combine was first developed for use in countries where the climate was suitable for grain production.
It was said that the climate in such countries as the British Isles was totally unsuitable for its use.
However, this was not true.
Combines work in quite damp conditions.
The use of a combine resulted in a big reduction in the time and labor required to harvest a given crop
because only one or, at the most, two men were needed to operate the machine.
Other labor required to transport the grain to storage was not excessive.

The history of fan dates back to the ancient times in Korea.
Murals from ancient tombs show that the ones made of feathers were in use even before the 4th century.
At first, it was just a device to cool with.
But other uses were added as bamboo and paper came into use.
For example, people covered their faces with it to avoid strong sunlight or to hide from their creditors,
and sometimes they even flapped off flies with it.
This device was also used in an artistic way by ancient scholars.
They wrote a poem or painted a picture on it.
In itself, it is just an appliance.
However, a brush stroke on its white canvas creates a transformation and makes it a work of art.

I went to a large university well-known for its basketball team.
Most of the time when I’m asked where I went to school, people recite its basketball statistics rather than its academic excellence.
It is seldom that I hear someone say, “Oh, your university has an excellent library!”
Universities waste far too much money and attention on sports activities, often doing harm to academic programs.
In my opinion, however, only a small portion of students are on athletic teams, yet the majority of students use the university library.
Universities need to give more money to the library than to sports activities.
This would greatly benefit the university libraries with new books and new computer equipment.

In primitive societies, people had to fight wild beasts, not only for self-defense, but also for food.
In addition, they couldn't avoid coming into conflict with other groups.
As the result, people ended up practicing different forms of fighting to protect themselves.
During this period, when grappling was a predominant method of combat, various techniques were invented.
And, naturally, this developed into a martial art.
A wall painting in an ancient tomb shows this fact and there are many historical records of it as well.
Nowadays, ssireum(Korean wrestling) is a type of folk competition in which two players, holding on to a long piece of cloth tied around the waist,
try to use their strength and various techniques to wrestle each other down to the ground.

The seeds of most plants are very durable.
They often travel long distances and survive harsh weather before they finally take root in soil.
Grape seeds are one good example.
If left on the vine, grapes will dry up and become raisins.
The raisins will eventually drop off the vine, and some of the seeds will be driven into the soil by rain or by animals walking over them.
Many grapes are grown for wine, so they are picked from the vine when ripe.
They are then boiled or crushed to extract their juice.
The farmers then use whatever remains of the grapes as fertilizer.
Amazingly, many grape seeds survive the crushing and boiling.
When they are inside the soil, the grape seeds take root and grow.

When Jan van Eyck began painting, it was common for artists to use paints called tempera, which had egg yolk as one of the ingredients.
Artists liked tempera because it dried quickly and made very bright colors, even though it had some disadvantages
for example, artists could not paint tiny details with it.
Therefore, when Jan learned new ways to use oil paints that had oil as a main ingredient, it was like a revolution in painting.
By using this oil paint, painters were able to express the light glowing on furniture or on people's skins.
They were able to show silk or velvet so that viewers could almost feel the material by looking at the painting.
Jan van Eyck

side the studio.
This enables the film makers to use actual physical landscape as the scenery.
If the movie calls for rivers, mountains, or jungles,
it may be cheaper to film in real places than to build imitation scenery.

One major reason we change our clocks to Daylight Saving Time is that it saves energy.
Energy use and the demand for electricity for lighting our homes is directly connected to when we go to bed and when we get up.
Bedtime for most of us is late evening throughout the year.
When we go to bed, we turn off the lights and TV.
In the average home, 25 percent of all the electricity we use is for lighting and small appliances.
By moving the clock ahead one hour, we can cut the amount of electricity we consume each day.

No one doubts the enormous potential benefits of modern telecommunications for the poorer countries.
When there are too few teachers and schools are too far apart, ‘virtual universities' using video, television and Internet can fill a huge gap:
when markets are far away and advertising too expensive, the Internet opens doors to small and medium-sized enterprises;
where medical specialists are rare, tele-medicine projects have saved lives; where the press faces repression, the Internet has provided new freedoms.
The Food and Agriculture Organization has helped farmers' associations use Internet links to plan planting, follow the weather, and find buyers.

On the surface, e-commerce appears to offer a big environmental bonus by eliminating hundreds of thousands of trips to the shopping mall.
A closer look, however, reveals that e-commerce may not be so friendly to the environment.
On-line book shopping, for example, may reduce energy use by less frequent visits to bookstores, but this actually creates more serious problems.
Every book ordered on the Web is heavily packaged and travels on a transportation network.
Instead of shipping, say, 10 copies of “Harry Potter” in one box to a bookstore, 10 boxes with one copy are shipped to e-commerce customers.
After all, this method requires more plastic bags which take a long time to decay.

You're late for work, and you don't have a car.
The bus is too slow.
What do you do? If you live in Helsinki, Finland, you can take a green bicycle from the street and ride it to work.
Helsinki's City Bike Program operates 26 bike stands in the center of Helsinki.
You take a city bike from a stand and leave a small deposit.
When you return it to a stand, you get your money back.
The bicycles are simple but convenient to use.
They have a special sign, and they are painted bright green, so it is easy to spot them.
The program is a practical way to get around.
All kinds of people use the bicycles: shoppers, elderly people, and students going to class.

Pen designers must be aware of hundreds of requirements.
Make the pen too thin, and it will not be strong enough to stand up to the hard use of schoolchildren.
Make the middle section too thick, and it can neither be grasped properly by the fingers nor controlled with enough precision.
However, people with arthritic hands may need a thick body because they can't close their fingers entirely.
And what of those who use the pen as a measuring device or as a mechanical instrument to poke, stab, and twist?
For example, the instructions for the clock in my automobile say to set it by pressing the recessed button with the tip of a ball-point pen.

A group of researchers observed kindergarteners playing with crayons.
The kids seemed to enjoy it with great concentration and apparent pleasure for internal reasons.
Next, the researchers promised some of the children “Good Player Awards” for their drawing efforts with the crayons.
For one week, these children knew they would get a “prize” at the end of the week for their drawing behavior.
For the remaining children, no such promises were made.
There was a significant change in the crayon use among the kids promised external rewards.
Surprisingly, they spent much less time playing with crayons than before.
By contrast, the other children maintained their normal frequency and duration of use.

My coworker Lewis is an environmentalist.
He is up to date on every environmental cause.
He strictly separates his trash, he doesn't use chemicals on his lawn, and he drives a small car to save oil and reduce pollution.
Lewis is not afraid to lecture his peers when he sees them doing something that might harm our environment.
Today Lewis and I met at the copy machine.
I asked Lewis how his paper recycling drive was going.
“Well, you're not participating,” he said.
“Oh, I'm sorry,” I said.
“I should have joined you.”
Then I saw what he was copying: a handwritten note of about three sentences.
He had made dozens of copies.
“Why didn't you make one copy, and then double it up? You could have saved a lot of paper,” I told him.
Lewis smiled weakly.
“Oh, you're right.
Normally I would have, but I'm late for a meeting.”

Children's play has been defined as the aimless expenditure of excessive energy.
Many people do not realize, however, that play can foster development in a number of areas.
For example, playing kickball not only helps physical development by promoting gross motor skills, it also cultivates social interaction among peers.
To discuss and agree to the rules of the game, children must use language for communication.
Having fun and playing as a group promotes self-esteem and teaches skills such, teamwork, cooperation, and leadership.
So the next time you see children play, do not think of it as a meaningless activity, think of it as a process of learning.
