ex) Mr. Lee never goes anywhere new, always wears a tie, eats the same food every day, and is in bed by nine o'clock. He's a real fuddy-duddy.
- hush-hush: 비밀스러운(secret)
ex) She works for the government, but nobody knows exactly what she does. Her job is very hush-hush.
- mumbo jumbo: 사투리, 이해하기 힘든 말(language that cannot easily be understood, jargon)
ex) Have you tried to read and understand all that mumbo jumbo in the insurance policy?
- wishy-washy: 우유부단한, 약한(undecided, weak, not definite and clear)
ex) My boss is very wishy-washy. He has trouble deciding who should do what, and he doesn't give clear orders.
- wheeler-dealer: 수완가, 책략가(a person who is always making business deals and trying to get the best deal)
ex) Mr. Park is big-time wheeler-dealer in real estate. He keeps buying and selling stores and hotels all over the country.

(ANS) Many nations have harvest festivals and Thanksgiving days, while many other cultures observe the veneration of ancestors, but no one has anything quite like the Korean Chusok. Historians tell us that the Chusok festival originated during the reign of the third king of the Silla Kingdom nearly 2,000 years ago. Chusok involves many things. It is an offering of thanks to heaven for the harvest, an appeal for the good fortune of another harvest in the next year, and an offering of sacrifices to one's family ancestors for all they did for the clan and family. (ANS) I make it a rule to read newspapers in the morning, but I am too busy to do so. On such a day sometimes I read them after supper when I am free.

[比較] therefore, hence, consequently, then, accordingly, so
therefore, hence는 for this reason의 뜻으로 앞선 진술에서 이끌어내는 필연적인 추론을 도입하는데 주로 쓰인다. therefore는 보통 결론을 도입하고, hence는 흔히 therefore와 바뀌어 쓰이기는 하지만, 앞선 진술을 강조한다. therefore는 특히 추리의 정확함을 그 뜻 속에 품고 있어, 논리학, 법률, 수학 따위와 격식 차리는 딱딱한 문체에 쓰인다.

consequently는 as a result, or sequence, or effect of the preceding(앞선 것의 결과로서)의 뜻이며, 흔히 추론을 도입하는 데에 쓰이기는 해도, 반드시 결론의 필연성을 의미하지는 않고, 오히려 결론에 대한 충분한 근거를 암시한다.
He said he would come; consequently I expect him.
또한 뒤따라오는 것이 앞선 것의 결과임을 가리킨다.
He said he would come; consequently I am waiting for him./ He is the popular candidate; consequently he will be elected.
이 말은 딱딱한 말이기는 하지만 therefore보다는 덜 딱딱하다.
then은 since the preceding is true(앞선 것이 사실이므로)의 뜻이며, 논리적인 인과관계를 나타내는 데에 쓰이는 경우, 조건문에서 결과를 표시하는 절에 주로 사용된다. 구어적인 말이다.
If A is true, then B is false.
accordingly는 in conformity with the preceding(앞선 것에 일치해서)의 뜻이며, 보통 논리적 결과 또는 인과관계를 나타내지만, 필연성보다는 결과의 자연스러움을 암시한다. consequently만큼 딱딱하지는 않은 말이다.
He said he was hungry; accordingly they shared their meager lunch with him.
so는 because the preceding is true(앞선 것이 사실이기 때문에), this being the case(경우가 이러하므로)의 뜻이며 구어적인 말이다. 어떤 인과관계를 가리키는 지 그 암시하는 바가 명확하지 않은 것이 보통이다.

퇴근하다: go for the day

* bounce (수표 등이 은행에서) 부도가 되어 되돌아오다
This check I wrote the other day was returned for
insufficient fund and now I have to pay a 50-dollar penalty.
(지난 번에 내가 발행한 이 수표가 부도나서 벌금을 50달러나 물어야 되요.)
cf. 이 표현은 informal한 colloquial expression으로만 쓰이고
written expression은 위와 같이 쓴다. 그리고
부도수표(bounced check, rubber check)에는 NSF(not
sufficient funds)라는 stamp가 찍혀 발행자에게 우송된다.

* catch one's breath 일을 한 뒤 잠시동안 쉬다, 쉬며
호흡을 정상으로 고르다. (relax for a moment
after any work)
- She caught her breath after the day's work.
(그녀는 그날의 일을 마치고 잠시동안 쉬었다.)

Every dog has his day. 쥐구멍에도 별들 날이 있다.

이 말들을 우리말로 옮겨 보면 '만사가 글렀어!'
'실망하지 마. 너 한테도 찬스가 올테니까'정도의 뜻이된다.
우리말의 '죽 쑤어서 개 줬다'에 해당한다. '난 망했다'라는
뜻으로 미국 사람들은 I'm finished 또는 I'm washed-up,
또는 I'm done for!라는 말을 쓰기도 한다.
사업 실패로 좌절하는 사람에게 Don't give up.
Wait till your ship comes in.라고 하면 '포기하지마,
행운이 찾아올 때까지 기다려' 의 뜻이 된다.

The ruling and opposition parties are expected to engage

Then Taylor took a bag of money from his belt, a bag of copper coins.
He bent down next to the rich man and shook the bag.
“Listen. Do you hear this sound?” said he.
“Of course I hear it,” shouted the rich man impatiently.
“Well, then,” answered Taylor, “the problem is solved. The debt is paid.
My brother has smelled your food, and you have heard his money.”
The poor man was saved.

On further investigation he found that goats were consuming red berries growing on nearby plants.
